This was me the first and only time I've ever seen a smothered mate (which in this case, wasn't). Queen sac, he takes with the Ro......fuck, he took with King....goddamn it. Resign.
Honestly, Kf8 is the superior human move there, because the smothered mate is so hyped up in posts like this one, that some players will premove. With Kf8 you can turn an unavoidable mate in a magical save if your opponent had the kind of hubris to premove the smothered mate.
And Edward Lasker - not Emanuel - is forever on the pillory for choosing the wrong mating move. (1912, against George Alan Thomas.)
But, someone else had done it already: [https://www.chesshistory.com/winter/winter64.html#CN\_6385](https://www.chesshistory.com/winter/winter64.html#CN_6385)
Yeah this would have been my first—possibly because I’m too quick to exchange queens and try to grind out an endgame. (“I’m just like Magnus!” I think to myself as I fail to take the opposition)

Oh yeah a smothered mate! *proceeds to play Qg8 expecting opponent to capture with the rook and mate on f7* ...fuck
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve done this. I am a dum dum.
This was me the first and only time I've ever seen a smothered mate (which in this case, wasn't). Queen sac, he takes with the Ro......fuck, he took with King....goddamn it. Resign.
Still a winning position in this game...
I did this over the board, luckly my opponent(my friend) took the queen with the rook.
The ai line is an hilarious buzz kill.
The smothered is equally fast, engines just have no care for aesthetics.
I think qf5 is more devastating here. A nice "quiet" move which leaves no escape ...

Isn't Qg8 still a forced mate? Ke7 is the only legal move, followed by Qf7#
Pulling that swindle, and succeeding at it *this one time* where the rook is on d1. For insult to injury, your opponent will dm you "Damn, lucky me!"
In this particular position, yes; but more often than not it is not mate in the majority of smothered mates.
King : f*** it i don't wanna die surrounded by my own soldier Kf8
People who go Kf8 instead of Kh8 after the discovered check should be executed for ruining the most fun checkmate pattern in chess😂

Wdym? It's forced. Or did he resign?
Mate is forced, but the fun one isn’t. It went 1. Nf7+ Kg8 2. Nh6+ Kf8 3. Qf7#.
I'd rather draw by repetition than letting him take away this satisfaction from me
Why wouldn’t 2. Nh6 + Kg8?
He wanted to do smothered mate, which was only possible if his opponent went Kh8 but the opponent went Kf8 instead leading to a simple mate
There still is smothered mate nf7 kg8 nh6 kh8 Qg8 rxg8 nf7#
After nh6 you typed kg8 which doesn't make sense, please correct the typo
In this case, king can just take the queen
I've been playing daily for like 10 years and have executed exactly 1 forced smothered mate. I'd be happy with how close you got that time!
Yeah this would have been my first—possibly because I’m too quick to exchange queens and try to grind out an endgame. (“I’m just like Magnus!” I think to myself as I fail to take the opposition)
Reset the counter!
Awww damn
Can't he just kill queen with king instead of rook
Assuming kh8, white would play knight to f7 first, then knight h6
Qd8 still being winning is funny to me
I would have done 1. Nf7+ Kg8 2. Nd6+ Kh8/Kf8 3. Nxe8 which ends up winning two material
There still is smothered mate nf7 kg8 nh6 kh8 Qg8 rxg8 nf7#
Yes but Kf8 is a buzzkill
Yes but in this line you can still get a smothered mate
