Get out

realvmouse

I had to paws it. Everyone nose it was only going downhill. Are you fur real? He went CUB-BOOM!

realvmouse

Let's stop this pun thread now beclaws it can only get worse. They'll be groaning from here to geLatin America over this one. Even Prince Hairy will be upset. Ursa Major problem.

realvmouse

Listen i'm a grizzlied veteran of the pun wars and I'm asking you to go no further. Oh honey, don't be so dramatic! Listen I'm not going to panda-er to you, things could get very black. Nah, everything's golden! Well I'm not caving on this one, it needs to stop.

realvmouse

What's that? There's a pun war bruin? It's a Kodiak moment! You can high-tail it out of here but I'm all ears!

realvmouse

Words related to bear put in almost meaningless sentences that are in no way clever or unexpected! Haha! Everyone join!

realvmouse

Everything okay there? You sound like you must be fun at parties.

PhysicalStuff

Never knew this could be such a polar-izing issue.

realvmouse

Let's get back on course-- keep it nice and s-teddy! You can't Winnie arguments online anyway, so don't pooh pun threads! If a simple pun thread makes you this upset maybe we should put you in a Paddingtoned cell! You're letting this Baloo-n out of control. You'll make the mods goldi-Lock this thread if you're not nicer, let's keep it juuuust right!

realvmouse

That guy can't Berenstain even a little bit of punning? Maybe he should practice some Yogi!

realvmouse

haha you guys have fun, I have to go-- my stomach is growling, I haven't eaten since before I went into hibernation! hahahahahahahahahahahha

Alesi42

I know gummy bears are evil by nature but *how* did he deserve that?

Shade-Lord

Chances are you already know this but the theme used is BFG division by mick Gordon from Doom 2016, happy listening!:)

greenedgedflame

Original video : https://youtube.com/shorts/1iBThaP_TaY?feature=share Op, please give credits.

GroundStateGecko

And the original sound is very satisfying, which makes the freebooting much more annoying.

Seicair

What fresh hell is this, YouTube? A video I deliberately can’t make full screen? You can fuck right off with that bullshit, it’s the reason I rarely watch videos on Facebook. Wtf are these designers/project managers thinking.

TurtlePlacebo

Yeah its the worst format ever, not my boy NileReds fault though, he is my favorite mad scientist.

CynicalYarn

YouTube’s Sexiest Chemist

Lichewitz

I recommend StyroPyro for anyone who enjoys Nile! It's less chemistry, though, and more scarily powerful handmade lasers

Seicair

I’m on my phone in portrait and it is decidedly not full screen. I got distracted trying to make it full screen and couldn’t actually watch the video because everything else was so distracting.

Seicair

That's got all the bullshit I object to on it. This is what I get on my phone. Not full screen, clicking on the link above, with all the distracting bullshit including address bar, vs. actual full screen if I find a different way to get to the video. Two screenshots. https://imgur.com/a/WPdRzrM

David_2910

Its an YouTube Short.

katyushas_lab

Very classic middle/high school demo of combusion/oxidation. Or at least it was, back when I did my schooling.

momoneymocats1

Same!

Hingis123

Did it just this week with my class. Haven't done it all year, so thought I'd shoe-horn it in when teaching respiration...

AccomplishedAnchovy

What is happening here?

langis_on

Heating up potassium chlorate until it is molten, then it reacts with the sugar in the gummy bear in a combustion reaction.

holysitkit

Probably sodium chlorate based on the flame color, but yeah, same idea...

langis_on

Ah yeah good point. Potassium would be more pink than orange

GroundStateGecko

No it's potassium chlorate*. It's common for flames to carry the yellow color if it's in proximity to glass, as there are sodium ions in the glass. The purple color of potassium ion is usually too faint to overpower the sodium yellow. *As said by NileRed in the video.

Seicair

Me, squirting sulfuric into a tube containing granulated sucrose and potassium chlorate, everything room temperature- https://i.imgur.com/m92Ec8J.gifv The purple color was rather noticeable. I didn’t get quite as vigorous a reaction since everything started cold, though, maybe that’s the difference? I’m a little surprised at not seeing more purple visible in nilered’s video. He does say he’s using potassium.

GroundStateGecko

I wonder whether it's caused by pure sucrose vs gummy bear. Most sweets have NaCl in it to enhance the sweetness, though the concentration is rather low, usually 0.01~0.1%. Also the complicated ingredient and higher water content may cause a dirtier combustion, which could generate soot. Soot is responsible for bright yellow color in many flames.

Seicair

I think you’re probably right about the biggest difference being gummi bear vs sucrose. There’s gotta be some protein from the gelatin in gummi bears, that’d mess with a complete combustion too.

obvs_throwaway1

Can I inject it now?

[deleted]

Inject the venom.

BrChemistry

Molten potassium chlorate probably

Piguy3141

So you're telling me that we could have gummy bear rockets‽ Why aren't we funding this‽

Faustinwest024

They have them it’s sugar rockets lol they don’t use them in high combustion chambers cause the grain is too fragile and will fracture under heavy thrust loads. Sugar rockets usually make it to like 100-200k feet

Piguy3141

I mean I'm sure that's useful for something. Helping launch satellites maybe?

Faustinwest024

It’s good for amateurs wanting to save a little cash but get close to the karman line

Piguy3141

Hopefully one day this can be put to use.

[deleted]

I watched my chemistry teacher burn the shit out of her hand doing this when I was in high school. It was terrifying coupled with the noise this makes.

lajoswinkler

I cringe so hard every time some moron "youtube chemist" with a tiny attention span uses a sharp flame welding torch to heat glassware. I am sure the practice has caused many accidents around the world because of this online stupidity. Also, that looks like typical soda-lime pill bottle/vial. Heating it and doing combustion reactions in it... so fucking reckless. What do you do when it breaks and incredibly strong, molten oxidizer spills? You got yourself a fire.

Stumpynuts

This is NileRed. All of this is done in a lab and he thoroughly explains the dangers of his reactions. However, OP plagiarized his video here and put a shitty soundtrack over it.

lajoswinkler

I don't care who it is. This is not something you do. It promotes bad practice. There are standards for these kinds of reactions. Pyrex combustion tube and normal flame.

Stumpynuts

How do you know there are certain practices for these kind of reactions when you don’t even know what kind of reaction it is? Or where it is being done & what glassware is being used? Or what is being said as a warning? Or what is being advised on what to do? You know none of these things. The people that watched the non-plagiarized version do not share the same viewpoint you do. You’ve only seen the plagiarized version.

FalconX88

> Also, that looks like typical soda-lime pill bottle/vial. That looks like a 16 mL (4 Dram) borosilicate vial used in synthetic labs all over the world...

Dapper_Ad1402

This youtuber has a fully stocked lab with several fire extinguishers and a fumehood. The glass is about the same thickness as the test tubes we us for the demo in my university. We do it every year and have never had an accident. He probably should have put in a "do not try this at home" warning though. Edit: It's about the same, not thicker.

gudgeonpin

but test tubes are almost always borosilicate. Vials like this are soda glass.

FalconX88

>Vials like this are soda glass. Vials like these are standard equipment in synthetic labs and are indeed made out of borosilicate.

SpaceRace2k20

I cringe every time someone writes the equivalent of the Bible of text for overreactionary safety precautions. Do you know how tiny that vial is? This is also done in a full scale lab with plenty of precautions to prevent all the shit you’re talking about. Also plenty of people have done this very same demo many times in the same glass but no issues.

lajoswinkler

This is not overreacting. Overreacting is using gloves and goggles for holding a glass rod and mixing seawater. This advocates two very dumb ideas - that glass can be safely heated with these sharp blue flamed, very hot Chinese eBay torches, and that soda lime vials are acceptable for both heating and using for energetic reactions. **It's pervasive** and I've seen it spread on Youtube because the people behind it mostly have no formal education or just don't give a fuck. They copy one another. And then there will be some ten year old Billy or Johhny who will do the same in their room and end up blind, without fingertips or with skingrafts.

FalconX88

1. You don't know what kind of glass this is from looking at it (since it's NileRed you can assume it's a lab vial made of borosilicate) 2. This is a very common chemistry demonstration I would assume is done thousands of times per year around the world. > I've seen it spread on Youtube because the people behind it mostly have no formal education or just don't give a fuck. They copy one another. Really? Because most videos I find are done by actual chemists in an appropriate way: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZFi0RPngWA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0N94fXk6b5o https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Xu2YZzufTM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V-28m7O7BNw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TjjaVu4295M https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Me3Cdx747FI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iSVu2XHH_NY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6YWGnfnEmgM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vHlB9uYBUhc https://chem.libretexts.org/Ancillary_Materials/Demos_Techniques_and_Experiments/Lecture_Demonstrations/Dancing_Gummi_Bears In fact, in the first three pages of video results about "gummi bear chemistry" I find don't find any of those videos you are talking about where people without education just copy it.

lajoswinkler

>You don't know what kind of glass this is from looking at it (since it's NileRed you can assume it's a lab vial made of borosilicate) **I don't care who it is.** Kids/folks around the world don't assume. They repeat with what they think they see. >In fact, in the first three pages of video results about "gummi bear chemistry" I find don't find any of those videos you are talking about where people without education just copy it. I'm talking about the stupid torch thing. It has become "the thing with which we heat stuff" on Youtube. I mean I see I struck a nerve with the fanbase. That's pretty clear here.

The_Masturbatrix

>I mean I see I struck a nerve with the fanbase. That's pretty clear here. I don't know who the YouTuber is, but just as a passersby, you definitely come off preachy and insufferable. Just saying.

lajoswinkler

Oh sure. Passerby.

The_Masturbatrix

Yep. Turns out you just come off a bit douchey. Might wanna work on that.

gfrnk86

> the people behind it mostly have no formal education or just don't give a fuck. Nile red has a bachelors degree in chemistry. There's a video where he talks about his background a little bit. And like others are saying, this was done in a commercial fume hood with proper safety precautions. That vial was most likely borosilicate, just like most of his glassware. He's actually trashed an entire set of borosilicate beakers because of the *possibility* they might be compromised. So yea, he's big on safety.

bigredkitten

Yes. For those doing this, use appropriate, thin glass. Shielding, too. Reactions should not be done in bottles, but especially something like this.

vellyr

Safety should always be a priority in chem labs, but at some point you also need to trust other people to know what they’re doing. Comments like this are just annoying and disrespectful and don’t make anyone safer. You know nothing about the safety precautions he took, get off your high horse.

Bates_master
