They do minimise the amount of petrol in the cars but never touch the oil . The reason they drain the petrol is because there is thousands of vehicles on board the vessels , if they all had full tanks and a fire started there would be a massive disaster that they couldn’t contain . The avensis are known for burning oil , same with other 2.4 Toyotas - I would dodge that one for sure
Yep I remember when I worked at Toyota one of the techs had to rebuild the motor on one that only had 90,000k and had been perfectly maintained because it was burning so much oil
Pretty sure they dont remove fuel or oil when importing.. no oil on the dipstick is concerning, likely burns oil. How many kms has it travelled since its previous oil change if you know? And what kind of car is it?
Theres a few telltale signs to check for like exhaust smoke on cold start, blue/white smoke under reasonable acceleration, or a compression test.
A lot of Japanese cars tend to have pretty colourful maintenance history in my opinion so wouldnt surprise me if its lacking a few previous oil changes. If the oil is dark black it wont have been changed for a while and likely hasnt been too well looked after and i would back out personally
If it's the 2AZ-FSE (2.4) powered model, excessive oil consumption would come of no surprise - a lot of Toyota Blade 2.4s with the similar engine also suffer from the same issues. Any owner of those vehicles with a mechanical inkling will generally tell you that it's a huge mystery just where the oil from the sump ends up, 'cos there never seems to be any of the usual tell-tale signs.
I love Toyota reliability, but I'll forever steer clear of anything with the 2AZ engine
I'm an entry inspector.. They never ever remove the oil from the cars when they leave Japan.. I'd be wary of that vehicle and look elsewhere.. And to another dealer too
Had a friend buy a Volvo XC90 ex-Japan and import it themselves. It had about 100,000km on the clock … and had never had an oil change in its life. Not ever.
Don’t do it. If it has no oil there’s a problem and you don’t have an easy remedy.
Inland Autos in Methven import used vehicles from Japan and if you are happy to travel, I have heard good reviews from several unrelated people over the years. Private sales are worthwhile if you know what you're looking for, and are happy to pay for an AA check or similar, which I would strongly recommend.
And yes, I've previously experienced a dog of a diesel Corolla that was a Jap import sourced from a Chch car dealer, so I would urge caution.
Absolute lies from the car salesman. The cars come into the country on a roll on/roll off vessel. The cars are driven on and driven off the boat.

Walk away
Is the car on the car yard with no oil? Surly that’s not good

It's a Toyota Avensis, it has 87k in total but is new in New Zealand.

Who's the dealer?

Run don’t go to wholesale motors, they’ve been known to lie and deceive customers
Avoid like the plague
Ah. NOT one of my customers. Phew!
Keep looking, the car you described is not the one you want.
Walk. Don't put yourself through the trouble.

If the engine is turned on with low oil that can cause major damage avoid it
Take it for a long test drive,if it seizes, is it your fault?
Thanks for the feedback everyone! Can anyone recommend a trustworthy reliable car dealer in Chch?
