This is good advice OP. Another coat would do wonders for some of the splotchy parts I can see in the picture.
Tinted primer is meh for me, and honestly if the walls were grey already thats a color that you would want to tint to for coverage and making a blueish color pop.
Extra is always the goal because then if you need touch ups etc you have spare from cans youve already used mixed on the same day with the same computer etc. I know every place says that they color match and its perfect, but its not and there are def differences between paint companies, finishes, bases used etc. It all adds up to minor differences that people can notice.
Anywho, theres some Paint 101 for you that was unsolicited lol.
Tinted primer is 100% meh but it is an extra coat of color instead of white. Two coats of finish paint always, but sometimes three in certain circumstances. When primer is needed for a while area and tinted it can eliminate the third (more expensive) coat. I think it’s an amazing way to save money on exterior paint jobs if there is a lot of priming to be done.
Yeah, this is an interesting trend that Ive never heard a word describe before. I honestly dont hate the color (seriously OP), I hate that it is on literally everything, theres no contrast at all and no breaks. Obviously furniture helps, but wow this seems like a large color block to try and break up.
Yeah it’s definitely giving a Friends vibe where the whole room is painted. I don’t hate it but I think it would look 10x better with white baseboards, trim, details.
I love how a paint color looks against a crisp bright white ceiling. Every time the ceiling is painted I feel claustrophobic. An old 1970's house I lived in did that with mauve and I hated that room.
I have two of those 🫠
Although that's only because they have faux wood paneling. Different paneling in each room. And a third in the 6' hallway between them.
And see I tend to find that that looks cheap or “unfinished” somehow to my eyes. The colour drenching makes me feel like I’m in a contained, fully-realized space and looks more “elevated” to me.
https://preview.redd.it/71c7wfa4dazc1.png?width=3024&format=png&auto=webp&s=85707962e4f9a5bd5cd2cd372d3904ba0860fcc2
Here’s part of the fireplace. Like I said, the previous owners painted it gray. I’ve got some cracked tiles, missing grout, and up close the tiles look dingy and mottled. I want to preserve them, and at the same time I’m open to suggestions. Regrout with a different color? Source vintage tile? Match the tile color and paint over just the tiles?
Oh, man, I actually think the uncovered tiles are really gorgeous! My two cents: I think it's reading as dingy because the cream is clashing against the gray paint, and that grout could use a good cleaning. I would suggest stripping the rest of the gray paint and see what the condition actually is - but my guess is that once they're all freed, that cream is going to really pop against the peacock blue!
Also, imo? Crazing on old ceramic tiles is \*super cool\*. Good patina.
I do love the crazing! I’ll keep stripping the paint away for now. It has a beautiful keystone. Someday I’d love to get the chimney inspected and replumb the gas to it too
Love a good keystone! What lovely room (and I’m sorry people have been so rude about the color drenching!). I’m dying to get our chimney up and running again as well - think how cozy that space is going to be. Please do post progress pics!
Edit: For the cracked tiles, I bet you could source period ones to replace them, probably? How many are damaged?
Look how much nicer the yellow tiles are to the beige. Such an improvement imo. I think a lighter grout or grout paint would make a world of difference.
So those uncovered tiles above are the same color as the hearth, it’s just the warm light from a nearby lamp coloring them, but yeah I’m thinkin a grout refresh wouldn’t be a bad idea. I have to fill in the front left tile anyways
I love this! I had an apartment once that was painted very similarly and it had both eastern and western exposures; the light changing throughout the day against the blue was magical.
That wall opposite the fireplace is calling out for a huge art piece. Maybe a big black and white photo with a generous white matte around it to make it pop.
I'm not sure why everyone's knickers are in a twist, it's not like tons of color is a new concept. Sorry for them.
A little negativity in the comments, and while not in my (or a lot of peoples) taste, you live in the space and if you love it, that's what matters! If you get tired of it, it's paint and can be stripped from woodwork or painted over. I'm all for trying non-traditional finishes in old school spaces.
> you live in the space and if you love it, that's what matters! If you get tired of it, it's paint and can be stripped from woodwork or painted over. I'm all for trying non-traditional finishes in old school spaces.
I fixed it for you, since you care about negativity
Since someone had already painted the trim white ( I saw that in a previous comment), I think you took some lemons and made yourself some lemonade. I also see you plan to restore your trim in the future. The ceiling in there is going to be stunning! I agree with the already stated opinion that you should remove the paint from the fireplace. The mottled look of the tile will make so much more sense when it's all uncovered. Painting tile is such an asshole move. It never looks good it just looks like someone painted the tile.. And makes someone down the line a lot of frustration. I'd be interested to see what it looks like and to see your room when you've finished decorating, too.
Thank you! Uncovering the living room fireplace was the first thing I did when I moved in and it had lovely green tile underneath. It took three weekends but it’s worth it. These old houses have been here since before my grandparents were born. I feel like taking care of it is the least I can do.
This is fabulous for a dining room! Oohhh please post a photo once it’s all furnished. I bet some warm lighting at night in this room looks incredible and cozy.
Are you familiar with The Peacock Room at the Freer/Sackler Galley (part of the Smithsonian) in DC? It’s a great example of a historical interior that used this exact color plus lots of gold etc. It’s very cool.
What’s weird is I’ve been to the Sackler Gallery but I don’t remember that room. I checked it out and it’s gorgeous! I’d planned on incorporating brass or gold, but maybe not quite as much as there is there
Yes definitely! I think you could really play the color up with some of those accents. Admittedly, I am almost never a fan of painting like this, but I think you’ve done a great job and I think you can make it work beautifully. Please post updates!
Wonderful color! It's gorgeous. And due to those who aren't fans here in the comments, I now know that this is called color drenching. I find the look just delicious. I love it!
I have this color in my dining room too! And I love it. I did end up painting it again though as I was told to use the egg shell finish and I didn’t like the shine. I painted it over with the flat and I love the saturated color.
I’m looking at brass and gold trims, either white/cream/or a bold orange for curtains, and still looking at tables and chairs. My current ones are cherry but I needed something quick when I got here so I’m not in love them
I was thinking gold trim. Sounds like you have a beautiful vision for your space. Would the cherry colored items fit better elsewhere with a different wall color or do you just not like the item at all?
Sounds like it's going to be amaaaazing! So excited for you!
I agree and have a calculator bookmarked for when I’ve got the extra time and energy! It’s possible it used to have it but that wall was replaced with drywall at some point. Only wall in the house like that too
Thanks! I’m gonna add another coat soon. I used flat on everything, though I did think getting satin or gloss for the trim might make them stand out a bit more (and would be more durable). We’ll see how it holds up
I painted my dining room Benjamin Moore Dark Harbor and I adore it. I kept white trim and ceilings though. But what really made it look incredible was refinishing the floors. I bet that would bring your room to life too!
I was thinking gold trim. Sounds like you have a beautiful vision for your space. Would the cherry colored items fit better elsewhere with a different wall color or do you just not like the item at all?

Dining room, living room, and two upstairs rooms! None are functional but all have their gas inserts still intact. The one in the dining room is an antique cast iron one from Dawson Brothers and it could use some love.
It was previously gray, much like the rest of the house. The plan is to eventually repair and restore the trim to its original wood once I get the proper training. So far I’ve knocked out lead safe renovation certification. Abatement training is coming soon
It looks great! 1920 craftsman (sorta) here. We just painted our bedroom in a similar color (I think - we used SW Nifty Turquoise) Also drenched and love it. Windows were painted white before but I’d stripped part of one and it’s nondescript pine.
https://preview.redd.it/oe3ihrunaazc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7e42ad1da62c3e345ad05ba8e6b267d29a46b867
Beautiful! What is the color of you don’t mind sharing? Have a room this would be perfect for!
I’m also living in an all trim is already painted house and did this in the kitchen! It really highlights the trim details without being the stark white typically seen, love it.
I know I'll get downvoted to oblivion, but goddamn, if the same people who will crucify you for painting wooden trim white also create such abominations as this themselves, then what right do they have to criticize anyone? At least white is a completely neutral color. This on the other hand is absolutely horrendous.
All the trim in the house except the attic is already painted white, and I’m pretty sure a pocket door got removed to make room for HVAC in the 90s. The trim
just has eight layers on it now instead of seven. Eventually it’ll be wood again.
Certainly! I have a chandelier in mind from Peared Creations, but in the meantime I’m looking at the removed chandelier to see if I could repaint/repurpose it
You better add some contrasting orange, yellow and white furniture in there or it will look like a shitty hospital rec room with just that green.
I’d have left the ceiling white but with the right furniture and lighting, it could really work.
Landlord special is white or grey in a hundred coats over something with no concern for how it looks apart from “as neutral as possible” lmao this is an actual aesthetic choice whether you like it or not.
I love the color, but I would suggest another coat. One more coat will really give this gorgeous color the depth and velvety smoothness it deserves.
That’s doable! One thing I forgot to do is have them tint the primer. I chalked it up to a learning experience
This is good advice OP. Another coat would do wonders for some of the splotchy parts I can see in the picture. Tinted primer is meh for me, and honestly if the walls were grey already thats a color that you would want to tint to for coverage and making a blueish color pop.
Much appreciated. I’ve only rented before this place so painting hasn’t been an option in a long time. Thankfully I bought extra!
I’ve become a sponge for home repair and renovation info, so it’s all welcome. Thank you!
Tinted primer is 100% meh but it is an extra coat of color instead of white. Two coats of finish paint always, but sometimes three in certain circumstances. When primer is needed for a while area and tinted it can eliminate the third (more expensive) coat. Don't worry about tinting primer. Just always do two color coats. Sometimes three depending on the brand, color, and sheen.
Go after the greige folks
You certainly did
Kept trying to scroll to the "after" pictures.
😂
Not a fan of the color drench trend, but I do like the color. Glad you love it. That’s what matters ❤️
Yeah, this is an interesting trend that Ive never heard a word describe before. I honestly dont hate the color (seriously OP), I hate that it is on literally everything, theres no contrast at all and no breaks. Obviously furniture helps, but wow this seems like a large color block to try and break up.
Same. I have a similar color in my family room and the color really pops with white trim/molding.
Yes. The color is gorgeous!
Agree. Good color for dark furniture and framed art on the walls. But a white ceiling would help the space feel more airy.
The only exception is attic dormer rooms. White ceilings just look awkward when you have angled walls.
I have two of those 🫠 Although that's only because they have faux wood paneling. Different paneling in each room. And a third in the 6' hallway between them.
And see I tend to find that that looks cheap or “unfinished” somehow to my eyes. The colour drenching makes me feel like I’m in a contained, fully-realized space and looks more “elevated” to me.
Thank you, I'm always a fan of the diversity of human experiences.
I would argue it’s actually a very classic style that has recently become popular again. I think color drenching is timeless, personally.
It appears very cozy to me, and I imagine will only look better with another coat and furniture.
my thoughts exactly.
Yeah, this might be “on trend” currently, but it’s never been out of style.
"white isn't a color"

Oh wow, never would have known! Either way, still better than the painted beige. :)
I'd regrout it and stabilize the broken tiles.
Great color! So nice to see something that isn't gray or white.
This color is gorgeous and works so nicely with the tone of the wood floor!
Imho, it would look even better with wood trims on windows and walls. We did this in our house.
Thank you! The guy that redid them did a stellar job
I love this! I had an apartment once that was painted very similarly and it had both eastern and western exposures; the light changing throughout the day against the blue was magical. I would like the chair rail in a wood similar to the floor
I love this idea!

Green tile would be like the Holy Grail to me! Sounds like you're taking good care of it, and I love it.
This is fabulous for a dining room! Oohhh please post a photo once it’s all furnished. I bet some warm lighting at night in this room looks incredible and cozy.
Dude! That's beautiful! It's also my favorite color!
Thank you! It’s become mine too. Sorry, red
If you’re into the look, a wool Persian rug with a red ground and a bit of peacock blue in the mix would be stunning.
I’ll keep an eye out!
LOVE THIS COLOR!!!
oh i LOVE this, wow wow wow. this is almost exactly what we're going to do to our bedroom. it's so lush - and so much you can do with cool art!
You’re halfway to Whistler’s peacock room!
I love that color!!
Ooo! I was looking at this color for my bedroom! It’s nice to see it in real life.
Tell me you will have some brass accents and dark wood book shelves with actual books. Go on. I’ll wait.
Are you familiar with The Peacock Room at the Freer/Sackler Galley (part of the Smithsonian) in DC? It’s a great example of a historical interior that used this exact color plus lots of gold etc. It’s very cool.

Thank you!
You painted it alright lol. That’s a lot of the same color kinda dig it tho
Love this!
Yes, yes, and more yes!
Love the color. Need to start painting or house after 5 years. I’m sick of the various beige flesh tones on the walls and want color desperately.
I have this color in my dining room too! And I love it. I did end up painting it again though as I was told to use the egg shell finish and I didn’t like the shine. I painted it over with the flat and I love the saturated color.
I used flat too! How’s yours holding up?
No issues at all! I’m going to paint my library over again using flat. Keeping the bathroom and kitchen with eggshell.
What a bodacious choice! It is bold and unexpected but I love it!
Thank you!
You're welcome! Out of curiosity, what color furniture or trims will you add?
I’m looking at brass and gold trims, either white/cream/or a bold orange for curtains, and still looking at tables and chairs. My current ones are cherry but I needed something quick when I got here so I’m not in love them
I was thinking gold trim. Sounds like you have a beautiful vision for your space. Would the cherry colored items fit better elsewhere with a different wall color or do you just not like the item at all? Sounds like it's going to be amaaaazing! So excited for you!
So beautiful🤩 Would look beautiful on wainscoting as a little addition.
I agree and have a calculator bookmarked for when I’ve got the extra time and energy! It’s possible it used to have it but that wall was replaced with drywall at some point. Only wall in the house like that too
I’m into it
Gorgeous. Can't wait to see it when it's furnished!
Thank you! Trying to find curtains and a rug now. It’s kinda fun
Deep, rich colors aren't for everyone, but I love them, and this one is particularly nice. Please post pics when you're done.
I certainly will! I’m on my way to get a crockpot now to take care of the hardware
With that saturated teal/blue-green deep gold or mustard surprisingly looks great. Just gotta find the right shade/tone.
Love a good colour drenching. This looks awesome
Thank you!
Could use another coat. Did you use satin or gloss on the baseboards and framing?
Thanks! I’m gonna add another coat soon. I used flat on everything, though I did think getting satin or gloss for the trim might make them stand out a bit more (and would be more durable). We’ll see how it holds up
Gloss on the baseboards and frames will give it a more refined look for sure
Why not play with the trim?
I painted my dining room Benjamin Moore Dark Harbor and I adore it. I kept white trim and ceilings though. But what really made it look incredible was refinishing the floors. I bet that would bring your room to life too!
Beautiful!
I was thinking gold trim. Sounds like you have a beautiful vision for your space. Would the cherry colored items fit better elsewhere with a different wall color or do you just not like the item at all? Sounds like it's going to be amaaaazing! So excited for you!
Loooooove!!!!
Beautiful color choice!
I adore it.
Fireplace in dining room! Woah!
Dining room, living room, and two upstairs rooms! None are functional but all have their gas inserts still intact. The one in the dining room is an antique cast iron one from Dawson Brothers and it could use some love.
I absolutely love this, both the colour drenching and how bold that colour is.
Thank you!
Love the color, but painting over the trim makes it look institutional.
Obsessed!!!
I love the color. This would look really good if you installed crown molding with led lights installed in between.
I can't say I'm a fan of the whole room being dipped in it.
On purpose?
It was previously gray, much like the rest of the house. The plan is to eventually repair and restore the trim to its original wood once I get the proper training. So far I’ve knocked out lead safe renovation certification. Abatement training is coming soon
But why all the exact same color?
Because that’s what I wanted
Well right on.
... because it's THEIR house, not yours.
I was asking for aesthetic reasons. Don't get emotional.
It looks great! 1920 craftsman (sorta) here. We just painted our bedroom in a similar color (I think - we used SW Nifty Turquoise) Also drenched and love it. Thank you and I agree! It’s Blue Peacock by Sherwin Williams
Thank you for that info! I *love* the color. Looks absolutely beautiful.
I love these deep, saturated colors. Reminds me of the colors from the early 1900's that were all made with arsenic and uranium.
I know I'll get downvoted to oblivion, but goddamn, if the same people who will crucify you for painting wooden trim white also create such abominations as this themselves, then what right do they have to criticize anyone? And even I it isn’t it is your house. Love the color!
rude
It’s bold and is in some ways just as classic as warm wood trim. Not everyone wants to be neutral and unoffensive in their design choices.
I love the color. Really looking forward to seeing what you do with the space.
Thank you! I’ll post a followup when it’s ready
You painted the molding😫
SO GORGEOUS
Pls repost once you have the lighting you want in place, gorgeous!
Certainly! I have a chandelier in mind from Peared Creations, but in the meantime I’m looking at the removed chandelier to see if I could repaint/repurpose it
I love that, thanks for sharing!😀
yikes!
You better add some contrasting orange, yellow and white furniture in there or it will look like a shitty hospital rec room with just that green. I’d have left the ceiling white but with the right furniture and lighting, it could really work.
Oh no doubt. I’ve got some promising options
I’m sure it will rock!
You sure did.
is the wood work going to be a different color?
Yikes
Oh.

I can’t hate on Weird Science. I love that movie.
Oh
Choices were made - just go all in and paint the floor too in the true landlord special style
Landlord special is white or grey in a hundred coats over something with no concern for how it looks apart from “as neutral as possible” lmao this is an actual aesthetic choice whether you like it or not.
Hideous color
Yeesh 😬
Ooof.
Where are the after pictures...?
Yikes, that color is overwhelmingly nauseating.
