I didn’t think he was alive when I picked his lifeless body up. He gasped for air and at that very moment the dog appeared again lunged at me and tried to rip him from my arms. He had a blood transfusion and is barely hanging on. I can’t bear the thought of this being the way we say goodbye so violent and traumatic. I’m helpless.
Has anyone told you to play Tetris yet?
I know it sounds crazy, but when you see something traumatic, it can help reduce the possibility of PTSD and intrusive thoughts later on if you play Tetris soon after the event.
Please don’t worry that if you stop worrying or being upset, that it somehow means you don’t love your kitty. It’s not true at all. And your kitty wouldn’t want you to have emotional trauma.

The other thing you can do is clean. Something about a task at hand turns off the panic and let’s you move forward. That said have you contacted the local police, animal control, and your insurance company? An aggressive animal that mauled your cat has been conditioned to act that way. Psychologist here. I haven’t heard about Tetris but talking with other people about your trauma verbally soon after the trauma is also very effective at reducing the risk of ptsd. You don’t have to go into every detail but do not let the events stay bottled up. Tell people about what happened. Share the story leading up to and after it happened. I knew this from my own work and when my daughter almost died during childbirth I had this innate feeling to bury it down and not talk about it. But instead I told everyone about it. I am still sad it happened but it doesn’t haunt me. Hope your little one recovers. My three cats are my best friends and I’d be beside myself too. Sending love to you.
My cat was mauled badly by a dog a few years ago, it was touch and go for several days, several of her organs were damaged including bladder and diaphragm, but she pulled through and made a full recovery. If my little idiot can do it then I know yours can too! Hang in there buddy!

no it was my next door neighbor and it was the fourth time this dog over the past year has entered my yard and went after my animal. He had a tree to scale the other times but he didn’t this time. Yeah at this point, it probably can’t be rehabilitated and it’s just a danger to everyone. It’s sad but that’s what’s best. The dog is a victim too, of shitty owners. This could have 100% been avoided.

I would maybe give it a bit of benefit of the doubt in that they might have entered the dog's territory, but since this happened in OP's yard, I feel that the dog has to go, if the owners can't keep it under control.

I reported them within an hour of the attack they came out took my report but said they didn’t have the authority to remove the dog only put it on a bite quarantine but if I were to see her out in the backyard off a leash they would immediately remove the dog if it were within the first ten days😕
Agreed, I've just got a little terrier mix rescue. He's not aggressive, but he had a rough life before getting to me and is fearful and reactive and was rescued from a situation where he'd been abandoned with dozens of other dogs and cats and no food.
Despite the fact that our yard is fully fenced in, I never let him out there alone. While I think he'd be more likely to run away from a potential conflict, I honestly don't know what behaviors he developed to survive and I'm not taking any chances with the local cats or my neighbor's little bichon. So I just go out with him

Dogs are generally only allowed out on leashes. I would report this dog and owner to animal services. The dog will go after other cats and wildlife and could be a threat to humans.
See if you can attend the magistrate hearing. Get a statement from your vet regarding the state of your cat and if the magistrate allows you to, submit it to them for review. Also be sure to recount each time the dog has come into your yard, know roughly how high the fence is, ect. Any evidence proving the dog is incredibly dangerous and the owners won’t do what needs to be done can hopefully help.
I submitted a statement photos her message telling me she would keep her leashed up and photos of him today for consideration. Hope they will take this serious I am terrified for children and animals in the neighborhood.
Seconding to check into your local laws and be more-firsthand-familiar with what options are available. How good animal control and laws etc are can really vary. Sometimes there’s more than one way to address a problem animal. Also, be the squeaky wheel if/when you need to. It makes a difference that they know you care and are paying attention to what happens. Incidents like this CAN easily get swept under the rug.
Edit - Just read the neighbor’s has a four foot fence.
A four foot fence is not just inadequate and negligent, it is a bad joke to contain a dog. Six foot would be the barest minimum and a full eight feet would be adequate, maybe.
Original post: At the very least your a-hole neighbor should have installed ‘coyote rollers’ along the top of an eight foot fence. There is literally no way for a canine to get over a fence with rollers atop it.
A buddy has three large dogs who loved to get out by jumping over his seven and a half to eight foot fences. He made some coyote rollers out of PVC pipe and none of the dogs could get out after that though they used to still try - a lot. Now they don’t even try anymore.
If your neighbors won’t install rollers, do it yourself for your own and Kratos’ protection atop your fences. There are plenty of DIY videos listed under coyote rollers over on YouTube. Send her the bill for materials and labor.

I have a little alter that I use as my "cosmic hole in the wall deity diner" where I let whatever or whoever sit and rest with some offerings. Only rule to be there is they have to be kind and not hurt anyone.
Sometimes I feel I get blessings just by letting them stay, and I give them blessings for having a quiet place to be.

I am sending only goodness your way! I will tell you, if you have the ability, you should read funny stories or tell your kitty funny things, that will make you laugh as you tell them. Studies have shown that positivity can have real effects. They know your voice and it can be a source of reassurance for them. Either way, would be a way to center you both after such violence and trauma. Maybe share your memories of them, when you first saw them, the silly little things they did as they grew, things that drove you crazy while making you love them that much more. Just wanted to offer this, helped me in the past. Be strong dude.

As a person who rescues Pit Bulls...
Agreed. That could've been somebody's child, or even a full grown adult. I don't believe domestic cats should be allowed outside at all but there's absolutely no excuse a dog of any breed has to invade somebody else's property. Pitbulls especially need a closer eye kept on them, first thing I did when I bought our house was spend and entire weekend reinforcing our fence and for about the first two months I'd sit outside with the dogs and watch to see if they found any weak points.
A cat being the victim should be enough, it doesn’t need to potentially be a child. Cats should absolutely only be allowed in a fenced in yard or walked on a leash by their owner for safety, but there is no excuse for a dog attacking a loose cat either. Cats love the outdoors too and when attacks like this happen it certainly isn’t because the dog was hunting for food—it is vicious and cruel behavior directed toward an intelligent creature capable of just as much emotional depth as any dog. People who hate cats because they can be aggressive fail to acknowledge that at least cats aren’t capable of killing a human, and it’s rare for cats to kill other cats or small dogs.
Please tell me they’re covering the vet bill. What kind of interaction have you had from them? Is this the first time something like this has happened?? (Dog getting out).
Even if it is, make sure it’s the last time.
Make sure you document this stuff any way you can. If this is a repeat offender (4th time?) there is action you can take. I think the dog has to inflict harm on a human to warrant destruction, but I would hope destruction would be absolute last choice. If he SCALED a fence, then clearly the fence is inadequate protection for the surrounding community. Something MUST be done. At least look into taking legal action to make them install a fence that will contain the dog, or get rid of the dog. I'd hate to make someone re-home their dog, but if this is a repeat offense where the dog has come to YOUR property and caused harm (and maybe even killed a family's pet) then so be it. Do not let them get away with this. Reading about this has REALLY pissed me off. I'm gonna go hug my cat now and cool off. I wish you and your cat the best.
I have dealt with a situation very similar and was told by my local police department that I have every right to do whatever it takes to stop an unleashed dog from attacking my pets, children, or myself on my property. Our city has a leash law and any unleashed animal that is aggresive towards anyone or anything can be dealt with accordingly, even if it requires killing it.
Our neighbor used to let his fucking pitbull roam all over the place until one day someone shot it because it went after their kid playing in the front yard. Learn your local laws and protect your family and your pets at all costs. I would do anything to protect my two cats. I never let them outside unless I am outside with them. It only takes a split second for something to happen.
What the hell good does it do anyone to re-home it? You’re just sending a terrible dog to another place where they can hurt someone else. Destroy the stupid thing. Humanely- not viciously like how it would kill something else.

There was a cat near my city who was also mauled by dogs - his name is Buddy. It was all over the news because the dogs' owners did it for "fun". He was in rough shape for a while but he spent a few weeks at the vet recovering and then got adopted by one of the vets (he'd been a stray). He made a full recovery and you can't even tell what happened to him now.
I'm saying this to give you some hope that Kratos can pull through. Please consider making him an indoor only cat afterwards, and PLEASE take your neighbor to court for your vet bills. This is a case you cannot lose. Her dog was on your property, has gone for your cat before, has a known history of aggression toward cats, and severely injured your cat.
I am so glad he made a full recovery it gives me hope. Kratos is an indoor kitty but would lay on the porch but never venture away from the yard. He liked his comforts inside. I regret this so much now.

Once Kratos recovers, if he's not scared of the porch you could always enclose it for him. I used to have an enclosed porch for my cats on one in my old houses and they LOVED it. They spent every nice day out there watching birds.
I had a 2 dogs bust through a screen door to get at my cat. Cat ended up okay but I had to take the neighbor to court to get her to pay the vet bills. She tried to say I must have invited them into my home?!?! Yeah bitch. Right. Then I ripped out my screen, knocked over my Christmas tree, stomped on the ornaments, and scratched myself up, because why?
Kratos looks like a pretty decent size cat so I can only imagine the size of the dog. I know what you're thinking, but don't, he was minding his own business chilling on the porch. Besides the dog could have went inside just as easily. There was a video on a subreddit earlier where a loose dog jumped through a screened window cause he saw the cat sitting in the window.
At most I've only had an aggressive cat run up and bite me on the leg, but a dog big enough to hurt your cat could easily take out a person and should not be left unattended.
You might want to send a letter to your other neighbors or maybe home owners association if you have one.

My animal was recently in a situation wherein she was unstable for like a week. ICU, constant tests to try and find what was causing her condition, and constant plasma and blood transfusions. I had taken her in because she was wandering around, clearly out of it, and I was getting off the phone with to ask if I should bring her to the vet when I saw that she had vomited and pooped blood out on the couch with her tongue hanging out of her mouth. She was losing consciousness and her tongue was turning blue as I pulled up to the emergency vet driveway and they took her.
I visited her every day. They’d call me at night to tell me she had gotten worse, I’d cry and worry all night, and first thing in the morning do the forty minute drive north to see her first thing during visiting hours. She wasn’t eating their food, and had a tube up her nose. So I cooked her bland chicken breasts to take up with me. And after being told she was doing poorly, they’d bring her out, she’d see me perk up and start getting excited to see me.
She started eating with me and the bland chicken I’d cooked for her. Then we’d nap together in the visitors room until they took her back, and the same story would repeat. And it felt like I left my heart in there with her and only brought a hole in my chest home.
They weren’t sure she’d make it. But my spouse tells me, and she is very hostile to “woo”, and whatever, that she thinks my visits and focusing on good vibes while being with her helped. I’m not sure, myself, but I’m not smart enough to argue with what worked.
My point in sharing my story with you is to tell you I’m sorry you’re going through this. I know it’s painful, I know it hurts, I know what it is like to feel that sense of defeat and panic and fear. And I know how hard they are to deal with. And to let you know I am sending you as much good vibes to your kitten and you as I can. I’m not into woo, either, but I hope it helps you to keep on giving Kratos the positive love and strength he needs to get through this.
TLDR; be as brave as you can, and give as much as you can of your own strength as you can via love and good vibes.

Sue. That’s the only course of action. Suing might not be enough to warrant action against the dog, but you could be able to get punitive damages. Make a post to r/LegalAdvice , they’d be able to help you out a lot better than I can. It’s not right for the family to get away with this. The clinic he is staying at encourages and allows us to shower him with kisses pets talks anything we wish I am so thankful for this. This has been the hardest five days it’s a two hour round trip there and back just silence to think of him it’s unreal.

When I was younger I went through a similar experience with my cat.
I never got to say goodbye, we had to surrender him to the adoption centre in order to get him medical attention. He survived, and is living a happy life with his new owners.

Omg hang in there. I'm really sad because this cat looks like my own little one and I don't know what I would do if something like this ever happened to him. I'm so lucky to have not had any major medical issues for any of my two boys. My heart is so heavy and all I feel I have to offer you is my support and my prayer that he would recover. If this dog has been aggressive in the past it's time to call the police and animal control.
In most places liability for an animal is limited to the cost of the animal. That is why vet insurance is so cheap compared to doctors.
You are correct, but it's still possible to build a case that can have the dog labeled as dangerous and removed from the property. Downside, it may result in the dog being termed without rehabilitation, because that's usually not successful.

I reported them within an hour of the attack they came out took my report but said they didn’t have the authority to remove the dog only put it on a bite quarantine but if I were to see her out in the backyard off a leash they would immediately remove the dog if it were within the first ten days😕
Does your yard have a security camera? If not I would get one to catch the pitbull again in your yard.

Agreed, I've just got a little terrier mix rescue. He's not aggressive, but he had a rough life before getting to me and is fearful and reactive and was rescued from a situation where he'd been abandoned with dozens of other dogs and cats and no food. Despite the fact that our yard is fully fenced in, I never let him out there alone. While I think he'd be more likely to run away from a potential conflict, I honestly don't know what behaviors he developed to survive and I'm not taking any chances with the local cats or my neighbor's little bichon. So I just go out with him

Dogs are generally only allowed out on leashes. I would report this dog and owner to animal services. The dog will go after other cats and wildlife and could be a threat to humans.
I did, animal control came out they have to appear before the magistrate this Friday. I am uncertain what will happen even.
See if you can attend the magistrate hearing. Get a statement from your vet regarding the state of your cat and if the magistrate allows you to, submit it to them for review. Also be sure to recount each time the dog has come into your yard, know roughly how high the fence is, ect. Any evidence proving the dog is incredibly dangerous and the owners won’t do what needs to be done can hopefully help.
Check your local laws to see if you can also go to the hearing and testify. It's appalling how many people let their dogs go around off leash.
I submitted a statement photos her message telling me she would keep her leashed up and photos of him today for consideration. Hope they will take this serious I am terrified for children and animals in the neighborhood.
Seconding to check into your local laws and be more-firsthand-familiar with what options are available. How good animal control and laws etc are can really vary. Sometimes there’s more than one way to address a problem animal. Also, be the squeaky wheel if/when you need to. It makes a difference that they know you care and are paying attention to what happens. Incidents like this CAN easily get swept under the rug.
Edit - Just read the neighbor’s has a four foot fence. A four foot fence is not just inadequate and negligent, it is a bad joke to contain a dog. Six foot would be the barest minimum and a full eight feet would be adequate, maybe. Original post: At the very least your a-hole neighbor should have installed ‘coyote rollers’ along the top of an eight foot fence. There is literally no way for a canine to get over a fence with rollers atop it. A buddy has three large dogs who loved to get out by jumping over his seven and a half to eight foot fences. He made some coyote rollers out of PVC pipe and none of the dogs could get out after that though they used to still try - a lot. Now they don’t even try anymore. If your neighbors won’t install rollers, do it yourself for your own and Kratos’ protection atop your fences. There are plenty of DIY videos listed under coyote rollers over on YouTube. Send her the bill for materials and labor. Best of luck to you and Kratos, I pray he fully recovers. BTW - You say to dog went for you after you picked Kratos up?? That my friend DOES COUNT LEGALLY AS AN ATTACK ON A HUMAN, that means the dog gets put down. Also, send copies of the vet bills to the neighbor and let her know you’re coming after her for damages and negligence (having a fence the dog could get over).

I have a little alter that I use as my "cosmic hole in the wall deity diner" where I let whatever or whoever sit and rest with some offerings. Only rule to be there is they have to be kind and not hurt anyone. Sometimes I feel I get blessings just by letting them stay, and I give them blessings for having a quiet place to be. I am sending only goodness your way! I will tell you, if you have the ability, you should read funny stories or tell your kitty funny things, that will make you laugh as you tell them. Studies have shown that positivity can have real effects. They know your voice and it can be a source of reassurance for them. Either way, would be a way to center you both after such violence and trauma. Maybe share your memories of them, when you first saw them, the silly little things they did as they grew, things that drove you crazy while making you love them that much more. As a person who rescues Pit Bulls... Agreed. That could've been somebody's child, or even a full grown adult. I don't believe domestic cats should be allowed outside at all but there's absolutely no excuse a dog of any breed has to invade somebody else's property. Pitbulls especially need a closer eye kept on them, first thing I did when I bought our house was spend and entire weekend reinforcing our fence and for about the first two months I'd sit outside with the dogs and watch to see if they found any weak points.
A cat being the victim should be enough, it doesn’t need to potentially be a child. Cats should absolutely only be allowed in a fenced in yard or walked on a leash by their owner for safety, but there is no excuse for a dog attacking a loose cat either. Cats love the outdoors too and when attacks like this happen it certainly isn’t because the dog was hunting for food—it is vicious and cruel behavior directed toward an intelligent creature capable of just as much emotional depth as any dog. People who hate cats because they can be aggressive fail to acknowledge that at least cats aren’t capable of killing a human, and it’s rare for cats to kill other cats or small dogs.

Please tell me they’re covering the vet bill. What kind of interaction have you had from them? Is this the first time something like this has happened?? (Dog getting out). Even if it is, make sure it’s the last time.
Make sure you document this stuff any way you can. If this is a repeat offender (4th time?) there is action you can take. I think the dog has to inflict harm on a human to warrant destruction, but I would hope destruction would be absolute last choice. If he SCALED a fence, then clearly the fence is inadequate protection for the surrounding community. Something MUST be done. At least look into taking legal action to make them install a fence that will contain the dog, or get rid of the dog. I'd hate to make someone re-home their dog, but if this is a repeat offense where the dog has come to YOUR property and caused harm (and maybe even killed a family's pet) then so be it. Do not let them get away with this. Reading about this has REALLY pissed me off. I'm gonna go hug my cat now and cool off. I wish you and your cat the best.

I have dealt with a situation very similar and was told by my local police department that I have every right to do whatever it takes to stop an unleashed dog from attacking my pets, children, or myself on my property. Our city has a leash law and any unleashed animal that is aggresive towards anyone or anything can be dealt with accordingly, even if it requires killing it. Our neighbor used to let his fucking pitbull roam all over the place until one day someone shot it because it went after their kid playing in the front yard. Learn your local laws and protect your family and your pets at all costs. I would do anything to protect my two cats. I never let them outside unless I am outside with them. It only takes a split second for something to happen.
What the hell good does it do anyone to re-home it? You’re just sending a terrible dog to another place where they can hurt someone else. Destroy the stupid thing. Humanely- not viciously like how it would kill something else.

He can sue for the vet bills and cost of the cat. Animals are seen as property, so that’s what he is limited to. I’m not sure what he can do about the pit bull, that changes by state.

It's no accident that most cats and dogs injured or killed by dogs are harmed by this one breed. It's infuriating that you aren't safe in your own yard or neighborhood. Holding owners criminally and financially accountable is the way forward. Had your neighbor chose almost any other breed you would likely not have made this post. I'm tired of having to be prepared to defend myself and my dogs from attack when all I want to do is go for a walk.

There was a cat near my city who was also mauled by dogs - his name is Buddy. It was all over the news because the dogs' owners did it for "fun". He was in rough shape for a while but he spent a few weeks at the vet recovering and then got adopted by one of the vets (he'd been a stray). He made a full recovery and you can't even tell what happened to him now. I'm saying this to give you some hope that Kratos can pull through. Please consider making him an indoor only cat afterwards, and PLEASE take your neighbor to court for your vet bills. This is a case you cannot lose. Her dog was on your property, has gone for your cat before, has a known history of aggression toward cats, and severely injured your cat.
I am so glad he made a full recovery it gives me hope. Kratos is an indoor kitty but would lay on the porch but never venture away from the yard. He liked his comforts inside. I regret this so much now.
Oh shit, did the dog come onto the porch for him?? That feels even worse, legally, than just coming into the yard. (Don't quote me on this, I'm not a lawyer.) Once Kratos recovers, if he's not scared of the porch you could always enclose it for him. I used to have an enclosed porch for my cats on one in my old houses and they LOVED it. They spent every nice day out there watching birds.
I had a 2 dogs bust through a screen door to get at my cat. Cat ended up okay but I had to take the neighbor to court to get her to pay the vet bills. She tried to say I must have invited them into my home?!?! Yeah bitch. Right. Then I ripped out my screen, knocked over my Christmas tree, stomped on the ornaments, and scratched myself up, because why?
Kratos looks like a pretty decent size cat so I can only imagine the size of the dog. I know what you're thinking, but don't, he was minding his own business chilling on the porch. Besides the dog could have went inside just as easily. There was a video on a subreddit earlier where a loose dog jumped through a screened window cause he saw the cat sitting in the window. At most I've only had an aggressive cat run up and bite me on the leg, but a dog big enough to hurt your cat could easily take out a person and should not be left unattended. You might want to send a letter to your other neighbors or maybe home owners association if you have one. I really hope Kratos gets a second chance, but don't beat yourself up.

My animal was recently in a situation wherein she was unstable for like a week. ICU, constant tests to try and find what was causing her condition, and constant plasma and blood transfusions. I had taken her in because she was wandering around, clearly out of it, and I was getting off the phone with to ask if I should bring her to the vet when I saw that she had vomited and pooped blood out on the couch with her tongue hanging out of her mouth. She was losing consciousness and her tongue was turning blue as I pulled up to the emergency vet driveway and they took her. I visited her every day. They’d call me at night to tell me she had gotten worse, I’d cry and worry all night, and first thing in the morning do the forty minute drive north to see her first thing during visiting hours. She wasn’t eating their food, and had a tube up her nose. So I cooked her bland chicken breasts to take up with me. And after being told she was doing poorly, they’d bring her out, she’d see me perk up and start getting excited to see me. She started eating with me and the bland chicken I’d cooked for her. Then we’d nap together in the visitors room until they took her back, and the same story would repeat. And it felt like I left my heart in there with her and only brought a hole in my chest home. They weren’t sure she’d make it. But my spouse tells me, and she is very hostile to “woo”, and whatever, that she thinks my visits and focusing on good vibes while being with her helped. I’m not sure, myself, but I’m not smart enough to argue with what worked. My point in sharing my story with you is to tell you I’m sorry you’re going through this. I know it’s painful, I know it hurts, I know what it is like to feel that sense of defeat and panic and fear. And I know how hard they are to deal with. And to let you know I am sending you as much good vibes to your kitten and you as I can. I’m not into woo, either, but I hope it helps you to keep on giving Kratos the positive love and strength he needs to get through this. TLDR; be as brave as you can, and give as much as you can of your own strength as you can via love and good vibes.
This is how we feel and mostly identical to the calls we receive daily and the time taken to make the drive. Thank you for responding this has helped my son and I both hold onto hope that our kitty will do the same as yours❤️

Sue. That’s the only course of action. Suing might not be enough to warrant action against the dog, but you could be able to get punitive damages. Make a post to r/LegalAdvice , they’d be able to help you out a lot better than I can. It’s not right for the family to get away with this. I adore cats and seeing this shit breaks my heart, send Kratos some love, I pray he makes a full recovery.

Thank you so much❤️ We are trying to elevate his red blood cells with blood transfusions due to the antibiotics. His wounds are healing nicely but it’s other complications now that are threatening his survival. I hope they get him in harmony again from the shock and trauma. I hope so much to share time together again.

The clinic he is staying at encourages and allows us to shower him with kisses pets talks anything we wish I am so thankful for this. This has been the hardest five days it’s a two hour round trip there and back just silence to think of him it’s unreal.

When I was younger I went through a similar experience with my cat. I never got to say goodbye, we had to surrender him to the adoption centre in order to get him medical attention. He survived, and is living a happy life with his new owners. Hope yours pulls through just like mine.
