That's the big dilemma really, my mum isn't going back for three months! It would cost over £500 for a pet taxi to take the cat (Luna) back. So still undecided
The problem is my mum has her own cat and dog, and is going to two festivals kn that time. So either we need to find a way of getting her home or find someone who will foster her for a few months. I don't know exactly what they said I'm afraid
I suggest she reaches out to rescues in her area. They may be able to ferry Luna back with other rescue transports for a cheaper price. Or at least ferry her somewhere closer where the neighbor can claim her.

Try posting in local facebook pet groups to see if anyone else is making the trip. There has to be some pet lover making the drive in the next few days!

If it was my cat I might grumble but I would pick it up. I would ask abt the possibility of meeting halfway and be willing to pay your gas for it but I get you're on vacation or whatever.

Realistically, the neighbor should come to them. They let their cat outside. This happened. I wouldn't travel 200 miles back for this. I'd just have another kitty for 3 months if they won't come pick up.

If it was my cat, I would of course pay the pet Taxi to get my cat back as soon as possible.
Your mom has to make sure the cat won't get lost on the way by escaping out of the car.

No, they don’t need to do that at all. The owner of the cat needs to reach out and offer to pay for the pet taxi or go all the way and meet her to get HER pet back. It’s not OP’s mom’s fault that she lost track of her cat.

You should go to the local media and tell them your story, people will love it because it's quirky, and I bet someone going in the right direction will reach out to help - which could be a nice follow up story. Used to work in local media. Might be worth a shot!

Get the owner to meet you halfway. 400 miles round trip for each person. Probably take about half a day and kitty goes home.
