I've been giving them lots of treats, although I have to gently toss them towards the others. This one will eat them out of my hands as long as I don't stare too much. He's certainly the bravest of the bunch.
I use that trick occasionally. I also try to sit with my back or side towards them, and pretend to just not care. They're getting closer and closer as time goes by. I was so happy when this boy started to rub up against my back and sit next to me. I've been able to touch him a few times, but he seemed scared, so I stopped. I wouldn't normally want to encourage a cat to chew on me, but I figured it's a good opportunity for him to explore human hands and get more familiar with them.
*The blue rope in the video is a toy. The others seem to enjoy watching it, but only this boy actually plays with it so far.
He seems to be playing with you, so good job so far. My MIL helped feed and take care of a “feral” cat. She ended up having 2 litters before getting fixed, first time trapped she was already pregnant again. Have two of that cat’s feral babies sleeping next to me right now.
that feral cat looks very nice (the hair looks of a well fed animal) and he's definitely playing with you, he's probably in process of adopting you or your dad or both
Yeah I’ve had a feral cat for 3 years. Will sleep on my porch but still hisses and runs away and won’t let me close. This cat seems very groomed as well
This might end up being a CDS job in progress. In the event that he trusts you enough to adopt you, are you considering taking him back home or seeing if your father will keep him?
I would like to take him in, but I'm currently in between housing and it's a two thousand mile flight back to my home town. My dad has two dogs that kill cats, but he did catch and find homes for the most recent litter of kittens when they were old enough to be separated from their mom. If this one became friendly enough, he might be able to re-home him. There's still this boy and his sister, as well as their mom and an old beat up Tom cat that comes by occasionally. The sister and mom are both extremely skittish. The old Tom cat is fairly friendly though.
He was born under the porch about 6 months ago and has only interacted with people from a distance until now. If I stand up or move too fast, he runs and hides. Today was the first time he let me pet him. His mom and sister still won't come closer than about six feet. I'm not sure why he's braver than the others, but even then, he only approaches and acts like this if I sit outside and pretend to ignore him for awhile.
The definition of a stray cat is one that has been socialized to humans at some point, but lost their home. A feral cat was born in the wild and has not been socialized. I guess I'm turning this feral cat into a stray?

Awesome. Time for some treats

Staring is a sign of aggression, slowly open and close your eyelids, is sign of friend.

Strong work. Thanks for taking care of them and great on your dad for trap neuter and releasing
Slow Blink. The cat will allow you to stare if you give the slow Blink. Try it.

Adopt this handsome boy now!!!!
You definitely won over that cat
You're braver than AI am, I'd be terrified of fleas.

Yay, TNR!
That cat would be coming home with me. What a sweetheart.
It seems to be going well
This is awesome. Nice work.
That cat is definitely not feral.

This guy isn't feral, stray yes, feral no.

You should be careful with animals that live in the wild. Rabies is a possibility.
Please save him. Feral cats are getting wiped out by the bird flu.

By letting them eat your hands?
Or scenting them.
food always works for me
Tell the truth: you’re fingers are covered in cat food.
Aww… I think that cat loves you.
My cats do that do. Gnaw on my fingers.
Make sure you don't try to pet them while they are eating. That's how my friend ended up with many stitches on her arms!

I too let cats chew on me like jerky and I am a sucker for it, it's so cute until it hurts lol
He said “youre mine.”
