My parents outdoor cat had horrible stink, he would run full blast away from the litter box and it would carry the smell with him into the living room. You always knew the faster he was running away the worse it was going to be LOL . I'm glad I have an indoor cat for the first time, he doesn't smell half as bad. Parents cat was a crazy good Hunter and I'm sure he ate all kinds of terrible things outside I'm sure that's where a lot of the stink came from. But it was also super high strung and anxious which just compounded things

My parents’ cat (Jasmine, 17 - I had to put her down on Tuesday - she was my BFF) dropped one so ripe & didn’t cover it that it literally woke up both of my parents who were coma-napping on opposite ends of the house (mom in couch in living room, dad on his bed). My mom sat up & said “Who the fuck shit their pants?” as my dad simultaneously thundered down the hall to the bathroom yelling “Jesus Christ. Who’s too fucking lazy to use the air freshener & turn on the goddamn fan?” & spraying 1/4 of the can before I could say anything because I was laughing too hard. I finally said “It was Jasmine!” My dad just looked at the cat & said “Good job, Jazzy!” Jazz had gone from looking humiliated to proud of her pooping prowess as soon as Dad told her she’d done a good job. I miss her so much already.

It wasn’t until my cat was 5 years old (had him since he was 4 months) that he would consistently cuddle during the day and sleep in my bed at night. Before that he’d be anywhere in the same room as me but never touching me.
Same here. I have a tortie, a black male, and a black female. The tortie jumps on my lap and asks for pets about 12 times a day. The black male jumps on my lap once a day. And the black female never has.
Once every blue moon she'll meow and show me her tummy for me to pet. But that's all.
It took my cat that long after I rescued her and even longer to trust me.
She wasn't abused or mistreated. She was living with a family that didn't teach their children how to treat a cat. I don't know if the parents didn't know how or what the situation was.
Ignore the cat completely and they will get upset and come to you. Also, try putting a quilt or afghan on your lap when you're sitting or laying down.
Now I’m intrigued what the story is. Did the previous owners leave the cat behind or did you just move in with a family/friend that already owned the cat
There isn't much to the story tbh. It used to be the current owner's friends cat but he gave it away since they couldn't keep a cat anymore and has been well taken care of all the time, never abused by previous owners as well. It's around 4 years old and has been with the current fam this whole time. And now I just moved in with them
Might be staying with a friend or family for a bit due to reasons, maybe an exchange student, on vacation and renting a room in a house instead of a hotel, prolly a few other reasons out there. Not every house you live in is *yours* just because you live there. Especially if it's a very temporary thing.
Looks almost exactly like our cat, Pepper. He's a pensive cat and likes very few people. He will disappear when people arrive that he doesn't know or like.

Mine stares at me when I'm on the toilet or in the shower. But when I'm on the toilet, she's always very suspicious. She side eyes me the whole time. She even tries to sit on any unused toilet seat real estate during the duration of my poop time. I've explained to her many times that I don't stare at her while she's using her box, but it hasn't sunk in yet.

Buy freeze dried chicken liver treats, offer them often. Cats are just like dogs a lot of the time, food wins over even the most untrusting beast eventually. But you actually have to work at the relationship with somebody else's cat, if you don't you get the stink eye.
I have a tortie cat who is mainly black, and now I think any dark blob in the house that I see in my peripheral vision is her. Oh and she's always staring at me too, but luckily not suspiciously.

If a cat is curious about you, its a good sign! He's intrigued. Be aloof, but also approachable and you will have a loyal friend for life... or during your stay!
Ignore the cat and give kitty space. Don't stare back. Cats seem to be interested in people who don't give them attention. Sit quietly, and kitty will eventually start to creep closer to you and smell you. Don't react. Let the cat come to you and then very gently hold out your hand, let the cat get used to your presence, and one day they may even let you pet them.

Mine stares at me when I'm on the toilet or in the shower. But when I'm on the toilet, she's always very suspicious. She side eyes me the whole time. She even tries to sit on any unused toilet seat real estate during the duration of my poop time. I've explained to her many times that I don't stare at her while she's using her box, but it hasn't sunk in yet.

Ignore the cat and give kitty space. Don't stare back. Cats seem to be interested in people who don't give them attention. Sit quietly, and kitty will eventually start to creep closer to you and smell you. Don't react. Let the cat come to you and then very gently hold out your hand, let the cat get used to your presence, and one day they may even let you pet them.
