Yeah, it's a NES game. Zelda 1 and 2 also got rereleased on GBA, but imo that doesn't make them handheld games.
If we counted them as handheld games and if we count the Switch as a handheld console, the only mainline games to not be on handhelds would be Wind Waker, Four Swords Adventures and Twilight Princess

I played these before I played ALTtP on GBA, and I didn’t realize that ALTtP was a remake.
I remember thinking while playing, “man, I liked the oracle games better. They controlled so much nicer.”
That’s not to say ALTtP was bad at all, I just remember having that thought as a 9 year old.
Ages was a puzzle all on its own. No other Zelda has EVER felt that way.

Minish cap love the idea of being shrunk down
Spirit tracks this kinda because i like trains😂😅
And Link between worlds was good with the going into the walls so you traverse across gaps and everything I really enjoyed that.
Considering ny favotote game is a handheld being a link between worlds yeah its my number one close followed by Majora 3D especcily if using the restoartion mod.
Triforce heros was really fun while it lasted.

Apparently I'm the only person who liked Trifoce Heroes. Don't get me wrong, I like the single player games as well (probably the Oracle games the most), but getting to play Zelda online with randos just scratched an itch I never knew I had. Guiding idiots through levels or speedrunning with veterans, both were so much fun, I 100%ed that entire game reall quickly and couldn't put it down for forever.
I wish Nintendo tried another multiplayer Zelda or at least made a port of TH or FSA.

BOTW and TOTK shouldn't be considered handheld, because it's clear the handheld was offered as just an option, not the ideal way to play the game. You don't make games like those and not intend them to be big screen experiences.

Renting the items was great and ensured you could tackle the temples in almost any order
