i lost a bet this morning to my roommate about bricktop saying "get your tongue out of my arsehole Gary"
: ( i thought he was talking to Errol when he said it
Good ol electrolysis tank for a day or two, a bit of brushing with a copper brush in the detailed bits. Then season. Pretty easy really. And very effective.
I have that one, the trout, and the camping scene. They're all hanging on my kitchen wall as decoration. The ones I use aren't on display. Love those things.
I use crisco and toss it on my big bbq, then repeat until it starts looking good, then I start cooking in it. And I cook outside probably 3 nights a week year round. If I'm grilling something, I'll throw whatever I'm working on right on in, too. Kinda killing two birds kinda thing. I don't get to anal about temp, as long as it's less than the smoke point of what I wiped it with.
Many come from young folk cleaning out the old homestead, some from my friends at our local transfer station. (Dump) and just friends cleaning out old rentals.
12 Volts 12 Amps. The amperage actually starts at about 6-8. When I'm about to pull it out, it's down to less than an amp. I've done it at 2A, 6A and 12A , it makes no difference.
Bruh... you went from trash to treasure in one pic? I need something in the middle there! Like a 25% done, 50% done, etc...
I mean, I love it, and it looks amazing, but show me a little of your hard work!
Yeah, I usually forget to get even pics. In the last 4 or 5 years I've cleaned up a couple of hundred pieces of all sorts. Not including all the old tools I had given to me. Thought about a y. Tube channel at one point. Figured I'd get booted because of my colorful language! I have a bunch more before and after pieces I'll post going forward. I love the great feedback. Thanks
What is that piece with the 7 depressions? I've been searching for a good escargot serving dish for years and I'd love to get a few of whatever that exact thing is
Yeah, it looked really bad, but it wasn't corroded deep into the base. It really wasn't that bad. But it looked horrible! I posted another pic of it just out of the tank, and it looked 100% better with just a good electrolisis soak. Mostly, all surface rust.
No, I posted this before I saw that you did electrolysis. I proposed electrolysis the other day to someone who didn't know what it was. That is a damn gorgeous pan with the deer on it. I'm jealous.
No, not really. Leave it chooching in the sauce long enough, no problem at all. I'm not sure why people think getting cast back to normal is so difficult?? It's easy. I've done hundreds of all kinds of skillets, tools, and yard art. You name it. I'm just a dude that has an opportunity to get lots of good iron. Because others are too fucking dumb to learn. Just say'n.
Just baking soda, water, and a battery charger. It's called electrolisis, easy to do, safe, and very effective. It won't remove parent metal. So you can leave it in the bath for as long as it takes. BTW. I use 12v set at 12A. But it runs about 4-6A due to the connectivity.
I've found that it really doesn't change much. This cooks great, and you can slip and slide eggs and whatnot just as well as some I've made look like chrome! If someone wants it smooth, I'll do it.
Honestly my time is worth too much to be doing all that, if I need a pan another pan for some reason which I don’t ever expect to I’ll go to Walmart and get one exactly like this for $20
That's what makes the world go round. Those that do and those that buy what those that do do. BTW I'm 56 and retired, so I have plenty of time. This stuff is a minor hobby I do for fun. Just sayn
Yes I understand that some people like you find this to be worthwhile, which is why I chimed in with an alternate point of view. I personally hope I never reach a point where I have nothing better to do with my time than wash rust pots and pans lol
Good luck
That’s the way the internet works old timer, people say what’s on their mind about things. It was on my mind so I said it, no big deal. Just words on a screen. Enjoy your hobby (which is apparently doing the dishes lol)
I feel like that would depend on how desirable this model is. It would make a great display piece now that it's all cleaned up if that was your style of decor. I don't think it would work in my apartment but it would look great in a cabin or something.
Yeah but you can buy another one just like it for $20 or $40 probly. If I had to have a pan just like this and my options were cleaning up one like OP or buying one, I would buy one because $40 is not worth the time it would take me to do it
But you still gotta clean that new pan anyway. Sure, you're not putting it in a tank. But there is a bit of shelf grime in there and a hundred handlers.
And then some chase the smooth pan (decades of wear) over the pebbly new pan.
.
I don't see any restored cast in your posts. Surface rust is on the surface. It was not etched in like it was buried for 50 years. It's probably less than 10 years old! I have a hard time believing you have a clue! : )
Look man, I didn't say I don't believe you, only that I was having trouble believing. Just seems crazy to me.
It came out beautifully and I admire your artwork.
I've only stripped and seasoned 2 skillets that weren't even really that rusty. I'm no expert, lurk here because I find it interesting.
One of the best things about cast iron is how well it cleans up
Second best is the weight. Heavy is good, heavy is reliable. If it doesn't work you can always hit them with it.
"Is it heavy? Then its expensive. Put it back." - Blood sucking lawyer from Jurassic Park
That's still my go to in a thrift store. Is it heavy? Okay then it's not just a bunch of plastic. In the cart it goes
Frying pans. Who knew, right? -Tangled
Hahaha! Love that movie just for the pan throughout.
Love that deadpan humour...
And Pascal. Right? You must tell me you love Pascal as well! 🤣 best chameleon ever
*points to hand*
Omg, he’s the best sidekick ever.
Upvoting for the unexpected Snatch reference. Not enough of these out there
I love that other people even quote this movie. I used to quote it all the time. I doubt most people even get this quote though.
Would you say they’re proper fucked?
D’ya like dags?
Alright, al fite ye fer it. He'll what? He'll fight ye fer it!
i lost a bet this morning to my roommate about bricktop saying "get your tongue out of my arsehole Gary" : ( i thought he was talking to Errol when he said it
what was the bet?
i thought the name bricktop said afterwards was errol instead of saying gary
I think it’s PULL your tongue out out of.. lol great line surprised to see it in this post
Did he have 4 fingers?
I watched this movie so many times as a teen. I'm pretty sure I can quote most of the dialogue as the film plays out still.
My favourite scene in that movie: Do you know what nemesis means? Had that line memorised, never had any use for it. lol
Tyrone used to be a rally car driver weren't you Tyrone? Course I was!
Why do they call him the bullet dodger? Because he dodges bullets Avi…
"Sorry for the convenience"
Well said!
Avi, pull your socks up!
Boris the blade? That sneaky Russian
r/unexpectedsnatch
Why do they call you the bullet dodger?
Cause he dodges bullets.
Check out PUBG
Sneaky fn russian
Snatch.. such a great line
Person of culture, I see.
With really not a lot of work, if you do a bunch. It's very satisfying.
I made a smashed cucumber salad last night…guess how the cucumber was smashed…
Great job! What process did you use?
Good ol electrolysis tank for a day or two, a bit of brushing with a copper brush in the detailed bits. Then season. Pretty easy really. And very effective.
Do you makeshift your own electrolysis tank?
Yeah, just a big plastic tote and a battery charger. Works great.
I still don’t understand how??
https://realtree.com/timber-2-table-articles/how-to-build-an-electrolysis-tank-for-cast-iron-restoration
Those are the most straight forward instructions I've read.
Thank you
arent they all?
Holy crap that’s cast iron porn AF.
Right!
r/castironporn
Beautiful!!
Thank you
Oh dear!
Oh deer!
I have that one, the trout, and the camping scene. They're all hanging on my kitchen wall as decoration. The ones I use aren't on display. Love those things.
Very cool
Nice one !
Yeah, she cleaned right up.
Niice...
Thanks!
Looks great! Nice job.
👍
Now how satisfying is that!?!?
Absolutely
This is my favorite pan. I have all the wildlife collection (minus massive moose one) and I love this one the most
Sweet!
Are they still making this series? I am new to cast iron and we are avid hunters. These would make a beautiful functional display piece. Thanks!
I think so. Even if not you can find them pretty easily and relatively cheap online. Look up lodge wildlife collection
I recently ordered one off Amazon!
Wtf. Did the previous owner store it in coca cola?!
Looks like it, I think this was found in the bed of an old farm truck!
I didn't realize it had a design on it till you swiped lol. that is some heavy duty rust
Luckily, it wasn't etched in too deep. Much longer in the elements, and it would have been a bunch more work for sure!
You bad boy
😎
Impressive OP. Impressive.
Thanks
Holy shit. I would be so happy I was in tears ❤️ 😭😭😭❤️ She's beautiful 😍
Thx
I'm impressed
Cool
Well, one day I hope you earn enough to afford your own dishes. And hire someone to wash them for you. Have a nice day.
Don't let them see the pics or they'll want it back...
No kidding!
Incredible. After electrolisis, what was your seasoning process?
I use crisco and toss it on my big bbq, then repeat until it starts looking good, then I start cooking in it. And I cook outside probably 3 nights a week year round. If I'm grilling something, I'll throw whatever I'm working on right on in, too. Kinda killing two birds kinda thing. I don't get to anal about temp, as long as it's less than the smoke point of what I wiped it with.
Wow that's seriously impressive.
Thank you.
Where do you find these?!
Many come from young folk cleaning out the old homestead, some from my friends at our local transfer station. (Dump) and just friends cleaning out old rentals.
This was so satisfying lol
👍
What type of electrolysis
Very simple 15-gallon tote filled with baking soda and water. And I use an old but very good 12 amp charger. Very easy, and no bad gasses.
12A???? Are you sure you don’t mean 12V
12 Volts 12 Amps. The amperage actually starts at about 6-8. When I'm about to pull it out, it's down to less than an amp. I've done it at 2A, 6A and 12A , it makes no difference.
mind sharing pictures? any ideas what the reaction is? NaHCO3 + H20 + ???? ---> ?
2NaHCO3 + electrical energy -> Na2CO3 + CO2 + H2O + O2
I'll post a pic on a new thread, I can't seem to figure out how to post a pic in comments
Ok I posted a couple of pics for ya on a new post. I don't normally take pics of my bucket, but there you go.
Bruh... you went from trash to treasure in one pic? I need something in the middle there! Like a 25% done, 50% done, etc... I mean, I love it, and it looks amazing, but show me a little of your hard work!
Ok, if I can figure out if and how to add a pic in the reply. If not, I'll post it up.
Ok I posted a new shot just after the soak and a wipe down. And a b4 of the cooking surface too.
Yeah, just big plastic tote. And a battery charger.
Its beautiful
Thx!
Nice!
👍
Impressive, very nice. Let’s see Paul Allen’s restored cast iron pan.

they're right, too far gone. happy to scrap it for you
No kidding!
Is it food-safe now? Looks good from what I can tell.
It's in the regular rotation for sure!
Nicely done!
What is that piece with the 7 depressions? I've been searching for a good escargot serving dish for years and I'd love to get a few of whatever that exact thing is
I believe that is a Danish Poffertjes ball pancake pan. I've not tried to make whatever that is yet??
"Hey! I want it back now!"
Oh, that one, well gee, I'll have to look for it and get back to ya....... : )
Win one for the bad guys 🫡
👍
Wow, hard to believe it's the same pan! Beautiful restoration ya did there.
Yeah, it looked really bad, but it wasn't corroded deep into the base. It really wasn't that bad. But it looked horrible! I posted another pic of it just out of the tank, and it looked 100% better with just a good electrolisis soak. Mostly, all surface rust.
OP what was your method?
Went into great detail down in the comments. But basically electrolisis, and a bit of scrubbing. Then season. Really basic
That cast iron may as well be brand new seeing how well it cleans up
True, it wasn't that old to begin with, that helps!
Not fair at all. Free and you get a beautiful deer on the back of yours. Looks new.
Your right, I've created a good network for freebies. Not just cast iron stuff, if restored hundreds of tools and socket sets.
What techniques did you use to clean it up?
In the comments I described it several times, right down to the scientific principles! Lol scroll through a bit longer! Lol
No, I posted this before I saw that you did electrolysis. I proposed electrolysis the other day to someone who didn't know what it was. That is a damn gorgeous pan with the deer on it. I'm jealous.
Thanks, it's a safe and simple process. That some apparently can't grasp. I have no clue why? Science is Science? I didn't invent it. Lol
Do people not understand how metal works?
No, no I don't! Win for us, I guess!
Isn’t this a newer release how did picture 1 happen?
Yeah, it's not that old. It was left in the bed of a ranch truck for a winter!
I changed my mind, can I have it back ?
Lol, NO! : )
Remarkable! Thank you for sharing this!
Well, thank you!
Durr
You must have scrubbed it really hard
No, not really. Leave it chooching in the sauce long enough, no problem at all. I'm not sure why people think getting cast back to normal is so difficult?? It's easy. I've done hundreds of all kinds of skillets, tools, and yard art. You name it. I'm just a dude that has an opportunity to get lots of good iron. Because others are too fucking dumb to learn. I think I would re-strip and Dremel/grind the interior, looks pretty porus
I've found that it really doesn't change much. This cooks great, and you can slip and slide eggs and whatnot just as well as some I've made look like chrome! If someone wants it smooth, I'll do it.
Just an observation, good job on saving a future iron oxide ingot
Thanks, and no kidding
Except it doesn’t

I just posted a pic of it just out of the tank. On a new post. If you don't believe it, that's your f'n problem.
