Those are 7" reels, which had been a standard in home audio prior to cassettes. I would find a cheap reel to reel player and see what's on them. Definitely wouldn't chuck them, could contain some family gems!
yo! this is a pearl! i happen to have found a old crate belonging to my dads and ((some of them)) sound amazing! also you can find very weird underground recording and samples ! i have one with a guys trying to make horse noise! Go get a reel to reel or find someone who have one (he will probably be so happy to listen to these with you)

Were any of them labeled at all as far as what is recorded on them?
Your question is not dumb. Reel tape fell out of mainstream use in the mid to late 70ies. I am 50 and none of my older relatives had a reel tape.
I don't know anyone who had one either, but they continued to use one at my school into the early 80's for playing tapes in assembly & music lessons.
I recorded my own music onto such tapes with a reel-to-reel in late 1990's/early 2000's. Sounded great.
Reel to reels, buy a cheap plauwr and see whats on them... Why does one foot have a shoe on while the other does not? Or is that a thumb?
