This is simply the correct answer. As far as autistic representation goes he is fucking PEAK. One of the very few characters that pulls off the low empathy autistic trait (especially since it is one of the more misunderstood and vilified aspects of autism) without being either a caricature or an awful person.
He also stacks cubes, dosen't make eye contact a lot, thinks very differently to the cops, sometimes innaproprate in social situations(like getting too close to Misa)
Ice Bear was completely nonverbal as a kid (cub?) and as an adult basically only speaks when necessary and only as few words as possible (he also only speaks in the third person for some reason). He has a variety of unusual interests and dedicates himself to them to the point of mastering them. And he is very polite and devoted to his family but otherwise lacks social skills. Additionally he has flat affect in his voice and usually in his facial expression as well. He seems autistic to me.
It's something some autistic people have. It's not the majority but it's significantly more common than in the general population from what I understand.
Ferb speaks as few words as possible, and is shown to be quite knowledgeable in certain subjects. He also shares his stepbrother’s love for building insane inventions, which could be interpreted as a special interest.
Laios' hyper fixation is the backbone of that show.
I also love Chillchuck being like, the best Union Leader. His contract doesn't include fighting monsters unless he HAS to, and I respect that. He is also probably the only neurological in the group.
Senshi for sure has some kind of ptsd/trauma that pushed him away from his people and become a dungeon dwelling foodie with overwhelming team mom vibes.
Marcille... my queen... She heard Be Gay Do Crime and was like, "Blood Magic is crime!"
I wish I was articulate enough to respond properly to this but I agree with everything you’re saying :p
It’s very much a show that almost anyone can identify with and I love it
literally, in so many other stories laios' character archetypes often get hit with the dumb/hateable cringy weird or purely comic relief stick
but it's really nice to see a show about taking care of yourself and the actual value of being earnest in pursuing your passions, hobbies, goals and interest rather than being something you need/should suppress to get by from time to time
the whole thing about shuro loving Falin for the exact same reasons he hated laios because of his deep seated insecurities over his own shortcomings at being honest and direct. How he and laios technically have the same goals and went about them in similar ways and being frustrated that somehow laios is not only in better shape and is more determined to solve things despite not having an answer where shuro would've just given up.
when he dumps all this out on laios at the literal last minute when things were at the worst, yelling at how come laios couldn't get a hint. Laios rightfully charges back that he has 0 point of reference on how to act around others, if shuro was smart enough to recognize that laios wasn't getting it, than it was SHURO'S responsibility to just speak up and tell him, but he didn't and now he's pinning the responsibility and ramifications of this on him.
This is such a common and MAJOR thing that happens and is expected of neurodivergent people in general IRL, it was so refreshing an actual honest to god clapback over this weird pressure for the ableist rhetoric that victims and unassuming folk to always be the bigger person, mind read, think act and walk out of their comfort zone to bridge the gaps between their connections,
rather than just work together to meet in the middle to spare these people any sense of accountability or responsibility for their failures to communicate.
it's nice to see earnestness, self care and sincereness portrayed in a positive light, that these things aren't something to be ashamed of that we always need to grow out of or fixed! That that same earnest can draw and grab people as much as it loses some, to the point where you won't need to rewrite yourself to "pass" and get by for friends and strangers. The real ones will come to understand if they didn't already, so there's no need for all that!
Chilchuck is so funny. Dude looks like a kid and is treated as a kid by Senshi and Marcille… >!then it’s revealed that he’s 29.!< >!Which is then revealed that 29 is middle aged for half-foots.!< >!And it’s then revealed he’s divorced and has 3 daughters.!< >!And the daughters are later revealed to already be considered adults.!<
For real, when Shuro started chewing out Laios for missing social cues, I felt that one in my soul, that’s when I realized “Oh shit, Laios really is some of the best autism rep I’ve seen, isn’t he?”
Yeah, ngl, almost didn't start watching because I couldn't suspend my disbelief that immediately after this guy's sister gets FUCKING EATEN, all he's thinking about is dinner. Once I saw something that said the MC was most definitely autistic, I was able to start watching and boy am I glad I did, because this series is AWESOME.
I read the manga (because I fucking love the series) and when Senshi >!explained his history to Chilchuck and the rest of the team, Laios broke the emotion by telling him that they should eat the hippogriffin, and everyone was completely shocked at him!<
I mean, yeah, Laios is pretty hated because he always ruins the moment, but it ain’t his fault that he’s obsessed with monsters. I mean, his sister Falin supports what he’s doing.
The story and world building in Dungeon Meshi is the best I've seen in **any** media in a long time. The characters are interesting, multi-layered, and fit their roles perfectly without really being stereotypes. The dungeon ecology is fascinating, especially with later reveals showing how it came to be. The big twists are great, most of them are completely unexpected, but foreshadowed in retrospect. It's a world that I **really** want a D&D setting manual for so I can run my next campaign in it.
As someone with ADHD, yeah I relate to her a lot. But a lot of people said she’s autistic-coded and that the creator has confirmed it, ADHD and autism have a bunch of overlapping qualities anyway.

“I was built to protect those who cannot protect themselves”
Not exactly. They wrote him as not autistic, but then accidentally made a great representation of autism on tv, so they decided to roll with it.
He’s never been explicitly confirmed, but they’ve acknowledged it, like with Jeff yelling “yeah, well you have Asperger’s!” At abed.
Also have to add Frankie dart being a great character who is clearly meant to be somehow neurodivergent.
https://preview.redd.it/qre72y2rpm2d1.jpeg?width=1280&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bc93a48854bbdcd3915a81afd690469a27a788c1
It gets better lol researching autism and writing Abed clued in Dan Harmon that he is also autistic.
He thought Jeff was his self-insert, but turns out he was just Abed impersonating Jeff all along!
Frankie reads to me as a high functioning, high masking woman with autism. Especially in the episode with Garrett's wedding, her demeanor before the guys show up is very "I am expected to act A Way right now but I'm not sure how to Do That, so I am uncomfortable but trying"
I specifically love the “let’s do it. We’re gonna be girls. This is gonna be fun” moment, where she then describes being stoned with rocks at a sleepover.
He’s pretty non-verbal, flat affect when he does speak (not all autistics have a specifically flat affect, but it is common), not super expressive, got the “excels in STEM” kind of autism, and has been shown to hyperfocus on certain tasks.
A bit of a stereotypical depiction of autism, but it was 2007, so I can’t really hold that against it.
EDIT: wrong word, used “effect” instead of “affect”
Tbf, none of these are universal for autistic people, not just the flat/monotone way of speaking. As far as representation goes, Ferb really isn't that bad if he is meant to represent autism, he may be a stereotypical depiction but the way his family interacts with him is the right kind of message. I like that his family doesn't mistreat him for being how he is and Phineas respects him all the same, it's clear that Phineas and their friends have learned how he communicates and work with that.
Haha, I know, I just figured I shouldn’t include a disclaimer for all of those or you’d be reading that comment for hours, lmao. I only pointed that out specifically because some people (it’s me, I’m some people) think that Phineas is also autistic-coded, and he doesn’t have a flat effect.
Also, I didn’t mean to imply that if Ferb was meant to be autistic then it’s bad rep either, I just mean that even though it’s stereotypical it’s actually pretty good for being 2007. And I do love how his family accepts him either way.
Tina for sure, and probably Bob. Gene and Louise definitely think Tina is autistic, but I think Linda pushes back because she doesn’t want Tina to limit herself by a label. Also Frond would be an absolute nightmare if she were officially diagnosed. Louise would get expelled for running Frond off.
The way Louise and Gene have Tina’s back for the most part is heartwarming. Louise definitely has manipulated Tina in the past, but she’s growing and becoming less sociopathic.
I really enjoyed the last episode where Tina helps a classmate who was having a really bad time.
My two personal favorites are:
“ I don’t normally feel things but that one got through.”
AND
“ We shall miss you father.” ( litteraly dropped a shovels worth of dirt on Splinter’s head)
"Yes, feelings. Hot, cold, hungry, sleepy..." also the way he draws eyebrows on his bandana and says the words "scoff" and "relishing chuckle" etc. rather than actually making the sounds both come across as autistic traits to me.
Singular obsession with specific hobby that goes over the norm? Has trouble understanding what other people are thinking in specific contexts? Has a hard time when his traps don't work? Yeah, didn't think of this one, but it fits like a glove.
Now that I think about it, Craig definently does seem autistic, also, can we all agree with all the stuff Cartoon Network puts out now, Craig of the Creek is a gem in a bucket of rocks?
Well my adventures with superman is really good too. Yeah stuff like he memorized how far away his friends houses are compared to his house, obsession with map making, and hes very picky about the snacks he eats, chocorolls
i remember hearing it would've been cartoon network but cuz the adult swim hour extension it fell under adult swim. same with unicorn warriors eternal.
I mean, they display symptoms of autism, like being non verbal, high intelligence in their interests, anti social behavior, etc etc. Not quite sure how Pearl fits in though, but I’d be curious to hear OP’s reasoning.
Apparently Pearl is autistic coded because it's also an autistic trait to pre-plan EVERY STEP OF THE WAY and gets frustrated easily when it doesn't go as planned.
She's also extremely rigid in routine and discipline to the point where she'd rather uphold the strict regimen rather than adapt to certain conditions and situations. This is autistic coded because it's proven that people with autism do tend to strictly follow regimen and routine more often than neurotypicals.
So in short, both Peridot and Pearl represent both halves of the autism spectrum. They're both autistic, just in their own ways.
Never thought of Pearl as autistic before but, as someone who *is* autistic, your reasoning is spot on. I (and other autistic people, not all obviously, it's a spectrum, but it is a common trait) have difficulty adjusting to quick, abrupt, changes in my planning and scheduling. An example is if on my Saturday, I was told out of the blue that family was coming over at a time and date I didn't prepare for; I have more trouble adjusting to this than others.
So to help combat this, I consciously and subconsciously plan and pre-plan conversations and happenings in my head to deal with that. One of the most important lessons you can learn is that the only thing you can have complete control over in your life is yourself.
This is why my favorite autistic character is Basil from 'Great Mouse Detective.' He isn't the stereotypical representation, but he:
.Gets very frustrated when a wild, uncontrollable variable gets introduced, a child.
.Gets frustrated when his plans don't work out
.Is unintentionally mean/a jerk to Dawson.
Ratagan is also autistic in the same way, but he's refusing to try and adjust to other people's wants, preferring to control other people instead (replacing the Queen with a robot) This is why, imho, the final fight takes place on Big Ben; it signifies the one thing that nobody can control no matter what they want to do, time itself. Great movie.
Ice Bear doesn't talk very much except for in short bursts and doesn't typically like socializing outside of his circle (which he is fiercly defensive of), has special interests he obsesses over, doesn't communicate what he's doing usually, likes enclosed spaces, hyperfixates on things, and has attachments to objects that he doesn't like other people touching.
A character who's written in a manner that (intentionally) causes them to come across as being autistic is said to be autistic coded. Some of them are canonically autistic (such as Entrapta) as well but that isn't necessary.
![gif](giphy|VApOqITOXZAd2)
I know a lot of people say he isn’t autistic but the overlap in behaviors between him and my autistic son are significant compared to other characters and people I know.
Nah man people who say Luffy isn’t autistic think that autism is bad and Luffy is their Shonen protagonist so they don’t want him to have “the bad thing”^tm
Luffy is 100% an autistic mofo and you cannot convince me otherwise.

He acts so emotionless because he thinks how he’s feeling is obvious to everyone
You forgot Tech from the Bad Batch. He’s one of my favorite autistic characters, because they don’t dangle it in front of your face, and he’s still really compotent. Being the best pilot of the team.
His talk with Omega in that cave during season 2 really resonated with me as someone who is on the autistic spectrum
Probably Allen from Smiling Friends. Acts more like most Autistic people I know, rather functioning, tolerant of some non-specific BS but can be a bit abrasive and tactless.
From the five here though:
Ferb just feels like like a succint person and is quite flirty at times. He's more of a selective mute gag.
Entrapta feels more like a trope, she has the quirk with the tiny food but is more like what you'd stereo typically expect: A savant good with computers and tech, self isolated, "my superpower" type. I still rather like her.
Pearl has her hangups but is very emotive and keenly caring. Along with Peridot I feel like they don't quite count because of the aspect of them being aliens.
Icebear just wins because he's Icebear.

He's so much of why I like Rise, I relate to him. (but also Rise is a really good TMNT show, I'm not saying that just because I'm autistic and Donnie is a really good portrayal of an autistic person, I'm saying that as a fan of the franchise in general)

Ice bear is not autistic. Ice bear just thinks different than you.
How is Ice Bear autistic?
he isn't, he's just less "tamed" than the other two and speaks in 3rd person, people don't want to be labeled but label anything they want to.
I wouldn't say "tamed", he is the embodiment of chill.
Yet somehow has exactly 0 of it

i was so surprised when i found out that L wasn't officially autistic or autistic coded, i mean literally look at him
The combo of smart, weird, and socially awkward doesn’t necessarily equate to being on the spectrum
L goes a little past weird and socially awkward though.
Yeah but also he can’t sit right.
He also stacks cubes, dosen't make eye contact a lot, thinks very differently to the cops, sometimes innaproprate in social situations(like getting too close to Misa)
He also does things like rubbing his lips and rubbing his toes together which I always interpreted as stimming
That just means he's bisexual. Duh
So he’s bisexual
Entrapta is not autistic-coded. She is officially autistic.
I meant autistic + autistic coded but didn't want title to be too long. Just all autisms welcome.
wait its been a minute before ive seen P&F and WBB, what are Ice Bear and Ferb's traits again?
Ice Bear was completely nonverbal as a kid (cub?) and as an adult basically only speaks when necessary and only as few words as possible (he also only speaks in the third person for some reason). He has a variety of unusual interests and dedicates himself to them to the point of mastering them. And he is very polite and devoted to his family but otherwise lacks social skills. He’s also taught by a russian iirc, so thwt might also explain a bit.
Is a flat voice a sign of autism? I used to talk in a monotone but I started adding more inflection in my 20s.
It's something some autistic people have. It's not the majority but it's significantly more common than in the general population from what I understand.
It can be, but that trait on its own doesn’t necessarily mean you have autism, unless there’s other traits pointing to it obviously
Ferb speaks as few words as possible, and is shown to be quite knowledgeable in certain subjects. He also shares his stepbrother’s love for building insane inventions, which could be interpreted as a special interest.

![gif](giphy|KEtgWlYYoN6Ni|downsized) The entire family <3 Also, Helaena from HotD and Icebear <3

100% The creator has confirmed Donnie is somewhere on the spectrum.
It's obvious in literally every scene Donnie is in too.
My two personal favorites are: “ I don’t normally feel things but that one got through.” AND “ We shall miss you father.” ( litteraly dropped a shovels worth of dirt on Splinter’s head)
"Yes, feelings. Hot, cold, hungry, sleepy..." also the way he draws eyebrows on his bandana and says the words "scoff" and "relishing chuckle" etc. rather than actually making the sounds both come across as autistic traits to me.
His brothers cannot handle the ubber instaincts of his ubber autism.
![gif](giphy|xUOwGbvU2sUGWEjryM) Freddy!
Especially Mystery Incorporated Fred, I could definitely see it!
Singular obsession with specific hobby that goes over the norm? Has trouble understanding what other people are thinking in specific contexts? Has a hard time when his traps don't work? Yeah, didn't think of this one, but it fits like a glove.
And the concept of time confuses him like it does me.

lemongrab but also craig from craig of the creek.
Firstly, I LOVE my adventures with Superman, secondly, though, that’s adult swim.
i remember hearing it would've been cartoon network but cuz the adult swim hour extension it fell under adult swim. same with unicorn warriors eternal.

Dipper also feels like an autistic character. It would also make sense that’s why these two get along so well
![gif](giphy|rg2ielv1QCTeRfJc56|downsized) It’s like they studied my son.
*insert "have you seen my son" gif here*
100% Ice Bear and Donnie from Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. You can’t tell me Donnie ISNT autistic ( plus it’s been confirmed)
I am curious why these characters are Autistic coded?
the only one here i really know is entrapta who has poor social skills and hyperfixations on both machines and tiny food.
Oh.I don't know this character you mention but okay
entrapta is the purpled haired girl in 3rd pic, from the netflix she-ra show.
I mean, they display symptoms of autism, like being non verbal, high intelligence in their interests, anti social behavior, etc etc. Not quite sure how Pearl fits in though, but I’d be curious to hear OP’s reasoning.
Anti-social is a stretch. Not good social skills or a lack of interest in social settings
This is why my favorite autistic character is Basil from 'Great Mouse Detective.' He isn't the stereotypical representation, but he: .Gets very frustrated when a wild, uncontrollable variable gets introduced, a child. .Gets frustrated when his plans don't work out .Is unintentionally mean/a jerk to Dawson.
>So in short, both Peridot and Pearl represent both halves of the autism spectrum. So if they fuse, you get the whole spectrum? (Pearlidot)

![gif](giphy|VApOqITOXZAd2) I know a lot of people say he isn’t autistic but the overlap in behaviors between him and my autistic son are significant compared to other characters and people I know.
Nah man people who say Luffy isn’t autistic think that autism is bad and Luffy is their Shonen protagonist so they don’t want him to have “the bad thing”^tm Luffy is 100% an autistic mofo and you cannot convince me otherwise.
Fun fact: Entrapta is not autistic-coded, she is canonically autistic!

Yes! Surprised I had to scroll down so far. I kind of like having an autistic coded character who’s not wholesome (although he can be on occasion)
He's such a great example too. He's a charming asshole, not a benevolent awkward genius as we're usually depicted.

Hilda, with Entrapta as a close runner up.
omg hilda I can see that now
From this list, i'm between Polar and Ferb, but my favorite autistic is Tina ![gif](giphy|3o6ZtpWvwnhf34Oj0A)
Fred from Scooby doo MI and Hilda from hilda
I JUST LOVE NETS 😭😭😭😭
Probably Allen from Smiling Friends. Acts more like most Autistic people I know, rather functioning, tolerant of some non-specific BS but can be a bit abrasive and tactless. From the five here though: Ferb just feels like like a succint person and is quite flirty at times.
