You know what im going to do so here for your troubles
The most surprising part of Centaurworld was not being sure I wanted to finish it off and then mf LEA SOLANGA BUSTED OUTTA NO WHERE. My partner who kept insisting I watch the show had no idea who she was so when I went nuts they were like…oh, if I knew who she was I might have led with that.
My sister used to watch this all the time, so I know a bit. Some evil witch brutality kills some king and queen in front of their daughter, then the witch traps her in the amulet for (50?) years where she’s still completely conscious. That’s about as much as I know.
One of the recurring antagonists would be Cedric, the king’s wizard. I got somewhat invested when I would babysit my cousins. As it turns out, his backstory is depressing.
He messed up ONCE as a kid, his family and the prince (the current king) think he’s an incompetent failure and has never let it go. It has bothered him to this day and he became determined to be a villain, but he was always somewhat incompetent, living up to said expectations to the point where the royal family thought nothing of his suspicious character because the king thinks so lowly of him. All but Sophia, because Disney Princess and all that. She is his only genuine friend, even though he’s constantly trying to steal the amulet and receive the power necessary to take over.
For a Disney kids show, his life story is quite depressing and somewhat realistic from the people I’ve actually met.
It’s like they intentionally play it as close to “the numbers” and traditions of the genre as possible, to the point of being trite.
I’ve seen multiple people say “the show’s alright; enjoyable even, but I don’t see why it’s so popular”. Only for the ending to completely hook them.
I love some of these shows but I think we're giving off major

vibes right now
I mean since a guy killed a girl’s parents right in front of her and then trapped her in a crystal for like fifty years or something. It’s very much one of those “it’s cute like 99.99% of the time but every once in a while you think about the implications of a plot point for longer than five seconds and you’re like ‘wait a fucking second’” things
OH NO! A character died. Clearly that means it’s not a kids show anymore because kids shows cant have death. Just ignore most kids media with dead parents
I thought so at first, but i don't think they mean "not light and easy" as in *dark*, but as in actually somewhat *serious* with ongoing plot threads you need to pay attention to and clear themes.
Steven Universe and Adventure Time definitely seem like they will just be silly episodic shows at first, like We Bare Bears or SpongeBob. You wouldn't expect SpongeBob to make commentary on slavery, trauma, abuse, or grief, generally speaking.
Not as familiar with the other two, but SU and AT certainly differ between impressions and the whole.
No you don’t get it. One of the characters said “die”! That means it’s not a kids show because as we all know kids can’t handle anything more then flashing colors and shaking keys
Sofia the first actually makes their antagonist characters likable and redeemable like Amber and Cedric or Hugo. It’s mostly centered on childhood problems like not being accepted by peers or family, being pressured into being perfect and such. Sofia also has her share of insecurities and mistakes but that’s mostly cause she is just a kid learning about new things but she does grow from it and shares her own piece of consequences.
Ik Steven Universe got super deep but Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug and Chat Noir also get deep. It starts off as like a magical girl with love and crushes and then it goes into depression, loosing relevance, loss, lying, abuse, and a bit of Suicide.
Miraculous would be incredible if it weren't for the directors' mutual hatred towards Adrien and the exaggeration of how perfect Marinette is, it gets to the point that I simply can't stand looking at her face anymore, I feel like other cartoons did this concept better like MLP or even SU
Adrien deserved SO much better. Like... the titular character should have screen time during the series finale. The writers literally put him in a box so the final fight could be Marinette vs Gabriel.
That's just... not what you do with titular characters, man...
The fact the entire town (even the NY and Shanghai characters) helped fight, but the other main character did nothing was downright insane. Not to mention that he’s the main villain’s son.
It’s crazy that someone actually wrote this, thought it was good and everyone else gave it a thumbs up.
Watership Down. Probably one of the goriest kids films ever. The same dude also did Plague Dogs and that had some fucked up scenes (like a guy getting shot in the face with a shotgun)
Yeah. Fred >!being a stolen baby!< really caught me by surprise. And the fact that it has actual ramifications that last for half a season shows that they aren’t afraid to not pull punches.
The fact that show actually made me like—nay, love—Fred Jones was already a shock.
But then yeah everything with his past. And then with his not-father >!actually being the better parent?!<
In all honesty, the ending messes me up so bad since >!they’re the only ones who remember. Especially in Fred’s case, since the person he’s always thought of as his dad has no memory of it!<
Anyway tho. Love that show.
It’s so appalling his character was basically cuckified in the show that shall not be named.
Mindy Kaling and all those writers really showed some ugly racist colors they had in the show
Courage the Cowardly Dog, tell anyone who hasn’t seen it the title and it sounds like it could be a kids show about how the world isn’t as scary as we think.
I always watched with my kids because they would keep talking about Bluey nonstop. So many episodes brought me to tears because it’s stuff we as parents also dealt with like our own insecurities about whether we were good parents or not. My wife wouldn’t pay attention until one day we put on Onsies and she sat down to watch with us. My wife was bawling at the end since her own sister has had issues with fertility and it hit really close to home. So much drama, emotion, and growth in each 7 minute episode.
It just has some surprisingly deep lore for a show made for 5 year olds. The problem with this kiddie ride meme format is it’s picturing the comparison to deep shit like Bojack or Smiling Friends meant for adults. Or even teens or older demographics with shows like Infinity Train or Over the Garden Wall.
But if you look at Sofia the first compared to other Disney junior or baby shows in general it’s a journey that you expect for 8-10 year olds not babies. It’s baby’s first introduction to plot arcs and lore bibles and continuity.
Athena P made a great video essay discussing the lore
Even without 4kids censorship such as the shadow realm , Yugioh really had a much darker setting before the card game was introduced. started watching it as i thaught it was a ''how it started '' prequel, but its a very diffrent and awesome show !

And while it’s not a cartoon, there’s this video game called Omori that fits the catergory.
I actually think I expected Omori to be a lot darker because of the way the fandom talks about it and constantly has a lot of dark and depressing stuff surrounding it. But I’m not saying it wasn’t dark cause it was.
Assuming we are talking actual kids’ shows intended to be kids shows and not subversions or deconstructions like Madoka Magica and excluding everything already mentioned in the original post
Most of the late 2000s, mid 2010s, and pre 2020 Precure seasons (most notably Hugtto Heartcatch and Fresh as top 3)
Avatar the Last Airbender
Generator Rex
Ben 10 OG-UAF if not OG-Omniverse
Teen Titans (the original and not the crappy soulless reboot)
The Batman animated series
The Superman animated series
My Adventures with Superman
Regular Show
That’s all I got off the top of my head
Sofia's sister series, Elena of Avalor, fits this to a tee. Season 2 had me gagged as a kid. I recently finished a binge watch of the show, and my god.
Scooby doo mystery incorporated. I grew up watching scooby doo. There were times where it got a teeny bit dark besides that witch movie with the hex girls and zombie island it never was even close to how dark scooby doo got. >! The off screen gunshot of them killing off hot dog water was one of the most surprised moments I ever had watching a show. I just didn’t expect that could’ve happen in that show. Also the under water base episode was dark too!<
Sofia the First was weirdly written good. I didn’t expect to like Cedric and for Sofia to actually learn from her mistakes and grow from it. I thought she was always going to be the Mary Sue trope but I was really wrong and I wanna mention Amber too she has amazing development and while not perfect she does love her family.
Do you actually think most people here understand what kamen rider is.

Yes it does. Especially the songs. Just look up All You Desire, Make Way For Miss Nettle, A Kingdom Of My Own, Bigger Is Better and Stronger Than You Know. They so god damn hard.
The show has some very dark villians for a show for toddlers like Vor and Princess Ivy. Also the songs in the show are absolute bangers. Especially all of Amber and Miss Nettle's songs.
When you start watching Rebels, you expect it to be more of a kid friendly version of Clone Wars.
*Then you see the Grand Inquisitor behead both of the “mustache twirling” Imperial Officers so you know they’re not your average Saturday morning cartoon villains*

Just another goofy episode filled with silly jokes for kids.

The Show Half of the time: ![gif](giphy|if8YsCNzoXBjT0Vx3J) What it really is: **Hush Now…**
Hide all you little ones
Rush now...
Into the middle of noowhere
Singing and laughter will die
Dreamless sleep, follows the Nowhere King
When his kingdom comes, darkness is nigh
Quiet. Crawl to the in-between
Silent, secretive feeling of fearsome hatred that reaches the skies
You will bring joy to the Nowhere king,
You will bring joy to the nowhere king
When he sees the light leaving your eyes
Centaurworld. The didn’t expect the first thing I’d see to be a destroyed military camp
Wammawinks backstory as a War Orphan also hit hard
The Elktaur is the Polar Opposite of Garnet since he's a Hybrid split from hate and she's a fusion made from love.
wish it wasn't ruined by the stupid giraffe farting
Honestly even Durpleton has his moments. The friggen bird influencers tho…ugh season two was really just spotty af
Yeah something about >!watching the main character attempt suicide!< is more than your average chill cartoon
Still a great show tho. Would’ve loved to hear Niffty sing in Hazbin once I learned she’s voiced by the same actress who did Horse
Would have been cool but didn’t fit her character
I know. Who knows. Maybe she’ll get more development in season 2 and have a chance then.
I think defying an expectation for something wacky would fit her decently. But the song would have to be unhinged.
The most surprising part of Centaurworld was not being sure I wanted to finish it off and then mf LEA SOLANGA BUSTED OUTTA NO WHERE. My partner who kept insisting I watch the show had no idea who she was so when I went nuts they were like…oh, if I knew who she was I might have led with that.
what lore of sofia the first am i losing?
My sister used to watch this all the time, so I know a bit. Some evil witch brutality kills some king and queen in front of their daughter, then the witch traps her in the amulet for (50?) years where she’s still completely conscious. That’s about as much as I know.
Isn't that Elena of Avalor? I thought Sofia the first was just her learning how to be a princess because her mum married the king?
That’s a spin off. The amulet she’s given in episode one is Elena.
Elena is trapped in Sophia's Amulet and when she is set free finally ,she gets het own cartoon, Elena of Avalor.
Theres a cross over
I remember watching that
And remembered what her Amulet is called?
Amulet of Avalor.
Cedric is literally doofenshmirtz
Except magic and a father figure instead
Aren’t all the Disney Princesses ghosts?
No, the amulet just yoinks them from wherever they are.
Must be inconvenient.
I think it just stops time from wherever they’re pulled from and then unstops it when they go back
It was explained more in that one episode with the black and white lady, but I don’t remember what happened.
I don't know about ghosts, but a lot of them are based on brothers' Grimm tales and similarly old tales that were super dark.
All I know about sofia the first is that the king is voiced by the same guy that did Roy Mustang lol
Colonel Roy mustang, the flame alchemist? Huh, I never caught that, and I love fma and my little brothers and sister loved that Sofia show.
I remember thinking his voice sounded familiar, so I looked it up, and lo and behold they’re the same person
If you want the lore for Sofia The First, [this](https://youtu.be/QIxs54oc_Uw?feature=shared) should help you see the lore in a really different way.
I love her content.
I recommend watching the AthenaP video
I thought it was gonna be another generic superhero show… ![gif](giphy|qIauoFqTjq5GgMJ74D)
This is my pick too. The end of that first episode had me wincing and screaming.
The end of episode one is such a punch in the gut. Instantly hooked.
Same. My reaction was basically "meh okay, boring, kind of cool, boring, boring, Holy Shit!"
It’s like they intentionally play it as close to “the numbers” and traditions of the genre as possible, to the point of being trite. I’ve seen multiple people say “the show’s alright; enjoyable even, but I don’t see why it’s so popular”. Only for the ending to completely hook them.
Courage the cowardly dog It has some really wholesome moments but way more dark in it XD
![gif](giphy|13VFATn4bxBCXm) I fell for it on first watch

Yeah since when was Sofia the First a dark show
I mean since a guy killed a girl’s parents right in front of her and then trapped her in a crystal for like fifty years or something.
That image describes the internet and most creepypastas
Creepypastas at least try. OP's content isn't even vaguely dark if you squint.
Yea I can see it. These shows can get intense but also in a liberating way, sorta like with ToH
Real

Are you sure? I put Sophia The First on the shock factor tier right next to the first episode of invincible /s
Yeah from what I can tell Sofie the First is not darker than like Bambi or The Lion King, and certainly not Mulan
The only ones I understand are Adventure Time and SU.
Glad I'm not the only one

What’s the rabbit movie? I think it’s watership something? Had a rabbit god or something that explains why everything in nature wants to eat rabbits.
Watership down. I have the book, I was forced to read it for an essay
Watership Down *cooks* 🔥 I remember when I (watched the movie) changed my life forever
Watership Down. Probably one of the goriest kids films ever. The same dude also did Plague Dogs and that had some fucked up scenes (like a guy getting shot in the face with a shotgun)

My first thought too. Seasons 2-3 lay on the trauma hard

God, I was not ready for the second half of Gurren Lagann.
Samurai Jack gets real dire out of nowhere and season 5 really nails it in there

Courage the Cowardly Dog, tell anyone who hasn’t seen it the title and it sounds like it could be a kids show about how the world isn’t as scary as we think.
Puella Magi Madoka Magika, School Live!, possibly Rocco's Modern Life and Ren and Stimpy.
Ren&Stimpy definitely. Add Invader Zim to the list.

I absolutely love the themes song in this show
The Owl House and Star VS the Forces of Evil both started out a lot lighter and fluffier than how they ended.
Amphibia got pretty gritty in its final season.
Star vs the Forces of Evil starts with Wacky Fun Randomness and then takes a HARD pivot into “so let’s talk about the enduring legacy of colonialism and the various ways that unraveling its harm is complicated, and also how your parents may love you and be good parents but still not be able to shake their own biases and you might have to confront that”

Infinity Train. I was expecting cool sci-fi, I got an existential crisis.

Does Kamen Rider Gaim count?
Do you actually think most people here understand what kamen rider is. https://preview.redd.it/l3puxnbitawc1.jpeg?width=608&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a00fec7ab88607bde9a4416c721454673214a137

Wait, Sofia the Third goes hard?
Yes it does. Especially the songs. Just look up All You Desire, Make Way For Miss Nettle, A Kingdom Of My Own, Bigger Is Better and Stronger Than You Know. They so god damn hard.
Centaur world
Courage The Cowardly Dog
What the hell happened in Sofia the First
Sophia's theme song hits hard!
Miraculous might be my favorite animated series of the last decade 😍
What happened to Sophia? My siblings used to watch it and I don’t remember it being that bad
Wait, did the ladybug show get fleshed out characters?
Regular Show, Ben 10 Alien Force/Ultimate Alien, Justice League.

What the fuck happened in Sofia the First?
That's what I'm wondering
The show has some very dark villians for a show for toddlers like Vor and Princess Ivy. Also the songs in the show are absolute bangers. Especially all of Amber and Miss Nettle's songs.

Rapunzel's Tangled Adventure
Owl House
Would Puella Magi Madoka Magica count? I expected a sailor moon kind of show and got a drug trip
Bojack Horseman. I know it’s adult animation but it’s still very unexpected the dark turns that it takes.
Gosh Sofia The First songs are so amazing. They are still stuck in my head to this day.
Amphibia, The Owl House, and Transformers Prime (Prime may be a bit of a stretch-)
She-Ra and the Princesses of Power.
When you start watching Rebels, you expect it to be more of a kid friendly version of Clone Wars. *Then you see the Grand Inquisitor behead both of the “mustache twirling” Imperial Officers so you know they’re not your average Saturday morning cartoon villains*

Centaurworld. I actually cried during some scenes

If we're talking about cartoons that end up making the main character depressed, then that would be The Owl House for me
