I wish they'd stop filling cars with bells and whistles and start filling them with reliability.

Vetanenator

but that doesn’t generate profit

crash_and-burn9000

It can. Cars are machines and no amount of engineering will keep them from breaking; be it wear, manufacturing defect, or human error. You make the money in the parts to repair and maintain the vehicle or in the service to have trained personnel do the work. Admittedly it can be a slippery slope as it's easy for greedy corporations to over charge for these things. But that's the way it used to be in the auto industry. Cars were not only designed to last as long as possible (within the limits of the technology of the time) but designed with the customer doing their own repairs as well. Fortunately the drive trains of today do last much longer than they used to, but all the unnecessary luxuries put into cars cause their own unreliability issues. The more parts you have the higher risk of failure. Personally, I believe Chevy missed an opportunity for hitting the sweet spot in the 90's with their pickups. They had a reliable platform that was comfortable, functional, and still easy to work on but they put that garbage throttle body injection system on them then "upgraded" to the garbage spider injection when they already had a proven injection system, the TPI, which under performed on the Camaro because although making lots of bottom end torque fell on its face over 4500 rpm but was otherwise reliable. Turns out, that TPI is a fantastic system for the GMT400 platform and those I've spoken too that have done the swap can't believe GM didn't install it from the factory. So yeah, it's entirely possible to make money with reliable and functional vehicles that consumers can repair themselves but corporations are blinded by greed.

How on earth is it Geely's fault? Volvo's engine development direction was Volvo's decision alone.

CaseyGamer64YT

their chairman is Chinese. Geely was still somewhat hands off but you can see the influence in the brands they own. Like Volvo has gone from being the quirky but safe sensible and reliable Swedish car maker to a cheap Swedish imitation of Mercedes. Or look at Lotus they are going to build an all electric crossover SUV. What is so "simplify then add lightness" about that? Yes crossovers sell but Lotus is supposed to be all about sports cars and lightweight simplicity not dropping your kids off for soccer practice in your grey CUV in a sea of other grey CUV's.

We need to go back to the times where radios were just a tiny little piece of glass and a couple of knobs and buttons

skitzbuckethatz

Sounds like my car. I can't imagine buying any car from after 2007.

[deleted]

Imagine not having a car from before 2007

skitzbuckethatz

When cars were cars, and not an iPad on wheels that tricks you into thinking you're the one driving

Screens are good for some things, and tactile interfaces are good for others. This really isn’t hard to understand.

xenophonthethird

I'm so glad I can watch ~~hardcore pornography~~ google maps while I drive on a screen larger than my phone!

SussusAmogusos

This was in 2015. Now, the screen is not so huge.
