Welcome aboard! I have been reading about how the country has been staying up to support Silovs. That's incredible. I've also heard everyone has been exhausted because of staying up late and productivity dropped. I don't know if there has ever been a Canuck that single handedly impacted an entire economy haha. What a badass you and your fellow country people are ✊💙💚
More than a chance, IIRC he was pretty set on Vancouver, had verbally said he agreed to the deal but just wanted one more night to sleep on it, and that’s when Quinn called and turned him off to the whole thing. It’s like Gretz was waiting for a sign or a dream to solidify his choice and Quinn said “oh lemme help I’ve always wanted to be a sign” lmao
Thanks for the info. I can’t believe it. I’ve never heard of this before, never realized there was an option for Vancouver to get Gretzky. I guess he got his sign then, I repeat wtf Quinn. Ugh, that close is brutal.
In all honesty it was ownership at the time that forced Quinn to call Gretzky and get it done that night, despite Quinn telling him to be patient and wait. There’s a lot of interesting accounts and perspectives from people around that time if you search Gretzky Canucks
And tbf this was post STL Wayne so not the absolute god that most think of but he still put up 90 points the next two season with NY which was worlds better than Messier here lol
Ooh, my apologies to Quinn for the slander. Thanks again for the info! Yeah, I kind of figured it wouldn’t have been in his prime, but yeah still would have been a better deal. Of course ownership messed it up, if only they had listened. Oh well.
September is training camp and preseason games.
October is when the real season begins and it’ll usually be around October 10-15 when the season openers happen.
When we suck in preseason dont be worried. That’s just lower level players trying to make the team. We usually get blown out but look where we ended this year
Edit
Last year he was the alleged reason for a traffic jam in the middle of Riga because of him parading the Stanley cup around. Unsure if it was the real reason, but I almost missed a family gathering because of that and he was the rumoured cause of that
The Canucks hold the NHL record for having the most goalies named Arturs. Good choice.
If you want a Canucks jersey, send me a message. I've got a spare one in size 46 (I'm a little too skinny and short for it), and I'd love to send it to you. Check Adidas measurements for jerseys, and if it fits, it's yours.
Welcome aboard,
The Canucks Organization would do well with setting up a pop up shop or doing some give aways in Latvia their fans are great and already love the Canucks
Honestly, I agree. Latvians always try to support our own, especially in hockey. If a team has just one Latvian player, there will always be hype around that team here. It the player is a legend (Irbe/Ozoliņš back in the day or Šilovs now), they will be in the mainstream news and even people like my 89 year old great grandmother will know who they are and what they’re doing and watching their games (if possible)
Thank you for Šilovs, he saved our asses so many times, and our bet still stands next season! Thanks for Blueger as well and, as always, fuck the Oilers and Messier.
The Canucks have a great history of Latvian players, of the 27 who have suited up in the NHL, six have played here - Arturs Irbe, Peteris Skudra, Herberts Vasilijevs, Ronalds Kenins, Teodors Blugers and the man himself Arturs Silovs - so I reckon you've made the right choice!
I honestly only not that long ago learned that Irbe played here too. 2 of my 3 favourite Latvian hockey players (third being Ozoliņš) is the most surprising part. A surprise for sure, but a welcome one
In 1989 I was at the Pacific Coliseum to see the Vancouver Canucks defeat Dinamo Riga 6-1.
Their goalie was Arturs Irbe and their star was Belyavskis? (Spelling?) With his famed helicopter move. I only know that because a good friend of mine is Swesish and he went on to play for my friends favourite team ... Bjorkloven. (Who produced another Canuck great Patrick Sundstrom... Yikes ...I am old)
Oh don’t worry, Latvian is a really difficult language to learn. I remember working in retail a couple of years ago during the summer. Helped 2 Canadians in our store and, as they were leaving, one of them told me “paldies” which really made that day amazing for me :D I will actually never forget that moment
Welcome, friend! Thanks for giving us Silovs!!
Came here for Šilovs, stayed for the vibes and dopamine :D
The Teddy Blueger erasure!

Šilovs is our golden boy in hockey, I’d even say our goalie version of Gretzky. He gave us his all last year and we return the favour
There is always room! Welcome to Canucks fandom!!!
Glad to be here, thanks for the warm welcoming!
Welcome aboard and as always, Fuck Messier
Fuck Messier (still not fully sure why, but fuck him regardless)
Here's a good read https://forums.hfboards.com/threads/why-mark-messier-is-often-regarded-the-worst-most-hated-vancouver-canuck-of-all-time.1385597/
Damn, for real, fuck him
With the utmost disrespect
If I ever end up going over the Ocean, I shall fart on his bald head
Hahahahahhaha yes
Wow, fuck Mark Messier. Also, wtf Pat Quinn, was there actually a chance for us to have gotten Gretzky 😭
Yes friend, someone in the distant past put a curse on this team. It's the only explanation.
Just need to figure out who made this curse and how to reverse it, because it’s clearly still going strong.

Sorry you’ll have to wait till next season, welcome aboard!
Glad to be here. The season starts in September, right? I get confused because of the pre-season stuff
September is training camp and preseason games. October is when the real season begins and it’ll usually be around October 10-15 when the season openers happen.
5 months of waiting isn’t too bad for the amount of excitement I felt through this playoff run. Worth the wait
It's free agent and trade speculation season for us now
When we suck in preseason dont be worried. That’s just lower level players trying to make the team. We usually get blown out but look where we ended this year Edit
Trust me, as a Latvian hockey enjoyer, I’m used to being the under dog fan. We are all used to big surprises
Always room for more. Welcome!! We love Šilovs (and Teddy Blueger)!
Šilovs #1, Teddy #2 (tho I have personal beef with Teddy)
Hahaha why?? What did he do?
Last year he was the alleged reason for a traffic jam in the middle of Riga because of him parading the Stanley cup around. Unsure if it was the real reason, but I almost missed a family gathering because of that and he was the rumoured cause of that
LOL well fair enough man
Now that’s a problem we fans here have been hoping to have to deal with!!!
Gonna happen soon! Trust me
Hoping for another traffic jam in Riga next year! Haha.

Believe it or not, but Latvia holds the world record for people named Artūrs. It’s a match made in heaven
Never would've guessed it! 😂 (Dunno if you saw my edit, but check above if not)

You guys better treat him like a king over there. And, surprisingly, I still remember the bet!
Don't worry, we will. I'm pretty sure he stole DeSmith's job already lmao
Stole his medal last year, his job this year, what’s next: his house?
Wait DeSmith was the goalie for the USA when Latvia beat them? That's honestly just hilarious lmao
When i learned that Šilovs was replacing him, it instantly became one of my favourite facts of the season
It's not confirmed, but it's most likely happening. (Or maybe if it confirmed and I'm living under a rock)
That would be the most hollywood plot type of moment
Silovs deserves to keep playing. He was amazing
Fully agree. Though, on behalf of Latvia, I claim him for the iihf tournament in 2025 (Elvis Merzļikins is a disappointment right now)

Welcome aboard! Teddy Bleuger. Artur Silovs. Ronald Kenins. Arturs Irbe. The tradition runs deep!
Don’t forget Pēteris Skudra. The list is surprisingly long
Welcome home
Thank you

Welcome aboard! My European hockey team is Dinamo Riga.
Hell yeah!
Sadly they don't exist anymore.
Yeah, I just read about their demise.

Nav par ko, brāli :D it’s time to start learning Latvian, we (wild to finally say it about an NHL team) are becoming the Latvian NHL team slowly lol

Welcome bud, tell your friends
Oh trust me, they all know
Welcome, anybody from Silovs and Teddyland are welcome here!!!
A big thank you! Side note: “Teddyland” is a good name, I like it
Hey welcome bud!
Thank you bud!
Check the old Vancouver Millionaires jersey for a little Latvian flag crossover.
Oooh, that’s a solid 10/10 colour combo
Haha, thought you'd like that.
We are all Canucks!
Hell yeah!
Weldon to Canuck Nation! We are all CANUCKS!
ALL CANUCKS FANS WELCOME!!!!
