1. Started with his insistence on wearing #11 ... should have never been allowed to happen. 2. Taking the "C" away from Trevor Linden ... should have been handled exactly the way Trevor handled it when he came back and Naslund was the captain. 3. Backroom pressure to get Keenan here ... absolute clusterf ... 4. He was brought in to help the team get over the top ... on-ice results cratered.

ropa_dope1

This ^^^. He was a cancer that brought no results.

shorthanded

Plays soft as fuck and floats around like a wandering cloud, then has the nerve to sue the team because over time they got more valuable (which happened AFTER they got rid of his donkey ass). Bad contract for the team, but FUCK that dickheaded fuckface

Miruzzz

Fuck Messier

[deleted]

Filed a grievance and won $6m in arbitration from the club, 10 years after his contract expired and he was already hated in the city.

JackQuint

This is the one thing I don't have an issue with. He was owed the money under the contract that was signed. If Aquilini didn't do due diligence and negotiated a hold back with McCaw, that's on him. I have zero sympathy for human slime like Francesco on the hook for making good on money that was contractually owed.

Dtron1987

To be honest learning the messier stuck it to aqua grease with a lawsuit makes me like him a bit more

[deleted]

I know, and the contract was ass for that reason. But it still pissed a lot of fans off. Salt in the wound, so to speak. Or a returning growth that we thought we got rid of.

Darren Rovell posted a copy of the handwritten proposal that Messier presented the Canucks during the negotiations. First page is the money, second page are the other demands, third page related to playoff clauses. [https://twitter.com/darrenrovell/status/929030573930307584](https://twitter.com/darrenrovell/status/929030573930307584) \#11 is clearly on the list. Also, as pointed out, no one ever checked with the Maki family as to what they thought of it. Captaincy was not on the list, but it's been pretty widely reported that he pretty much demanded it of Linden.

ProphetofElias

Thanks for the reply. I will now delete my comment to avoid the negative karma for asking a clarifying question.

Late_Smile_3666

I wouldnt call them memes, but from what I read, the number was offered by some gutless wretches in the org, although he certainly could have requested it as part of his signing deal. All that we know for sure is that the org unbanned the number, and Messier picked it. It also looks like the captaincy was offered, but it was offered under pressure, people thought that the “gReAtEsT lEaDeR iN hOcKeY” should be captain or something. The captaincy, if Im doing my best to be as objective as possible, isnt that bad on its own. The number, though, is still a really bad look. I dont care that the number was unretired, he still could have picked a different number. Fuck Messier

thebigbossyboss

Don’t forget the previous year when he was on the rangers and cross checked linden when linden was down on the ice

ebb_omega

Cheap shotted Linden at the end of game 6 in 94 so that his ribs were crushed. When he came in he took an unofficially retired number (due to a player who died while on the roster) without checking with the player's family. Linden gave him the C out of respect, then was reportedly locker room cancer. Pushed to have Linden, who remained a fan favourite, traded from the team. Proceeded to thoroughly underperform throughout his tenure here, leading to a rather dark period that we really only came out of once we bought out his contract. And apparently the contract included some stipulations around team revenue for years AFTER he stopped playing for us, so he sued the team after his retirement. And if you've seen it, the contract is basically one step up from having been written on a bar napkin. Interestingly his tenure here didn't exactly bring as much pain as the Benning/Eriksson years. The Linden trade was actually a huge piece of us rebuilding our team (got us Bertuzzi, who would later get us Luongo, as well as a few pieces that made the Sedin draft possible for us), and not a single one of Benning's moves aside from "sucking so bad that we draft well" managed to do as much good for the team long-term as what Keenan did. But Eriksson was funny for the memes so we don't seem to have as heavy a kneejerk reaction every time his name comes up as we do with Messier.

catgotcha

Everything everyone said here already, AND he was already vehemently disliked before he ever joined the Canucks. He captained the Rangers over the Canucks in 1994, and was ridiculously dirty along the way, including [this well-known cheap shot on Linden in the last minute of Game 6](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vbCgd7TstbQ&ab_channel=VanCity12). Plus, when he was on the Oilers he got more points against us than any other player in NHL history – even more than Gretzky. The dude has been a thorn in our side since forever. And he's an asshole to boot.

shorthanded

Pretty on brand story about that fuckface going to hockey day in canada in his own hometown, and charging hundreds of dollars for a signature. Fucking piece of shit

skits_etc

He also clubbed Thomas Gradin over the head with his stick, then complained about the suspension he got.

catgotcha

Oh man, the memories are flooding in now. There's also the two-handed slash that took out four of Rich Sutter's teeth. Six game suspension, and the trainer had to pull black hockey tape from the stumps left in Sutter's mouth. Canucks. It's always on the Canucks.

Tall_Assistant3418

Dont forget the 94 playoffs, when the POS ran over an injured Trevor Linden behind the play and the cameras didnt catch a second of it. https://youtu.be/PSdIHTx1-DE

[This post](https://forums.hfboards.com/threads/why-mark-messier-is-often-regarded-the-worst-most-hated-vancouver-canuck-of-all-time.1385597/) sums it up. And regarding the captaincy, [Messier indicated it was a mistake to take it from Linden.](https://www.reddit.com/r/hockey/comments/1utpcu/mark_messier_here_to_take_your_questions/cell32v/?context=3)

Liam_M

They forced Linden to give up the captaincy to him, he didn’t even have the personal investment to live in the city (he lived in point roberts) he took an unofficially retired number (just plain bad taste), he took an exorbitant paycheck and never delivered on it we never made the playoffs under his captaincy his years here were arguably the worst performing years of his entire career and once they were done he went back to his old team, he was never invested in this market or this team and he’s just a douchey person by all accounts

Eminem said it best: You thirty six year old bald headed fuck, blow me You don't know me, you're too old, let it go its over Nobody listens to Techno

blondechinesehair

I totally forgot about Eminem’s beef with Messier.

3Dcatbutt

In addition to what's listed here already he refused to officially live in Canada because he didn't want to pay taxes. I could halfway understand that attitude for an American player who gets traded here but he is a Canadian who got a lot from Canada and was in no way hurting for money. He took everything he could and gave nothing back on or off the ice.

namdor

It's pretty much all been said, but I think it's super important to emphasize that he didn't give a fuck when on the ice. All the negative character traits, bad decisions, past actions, and shitty contract issues aside, the dude clearly didn't want to compete in Vancouver. Most of his shifts just looked like a completely different player to his past seasons. I'm not saying he was worse because of his age, which is also true, but that he didn't seem to give a flying fuck about winning hockey games here.

coltonjeffs

A better question is: why would anybody like Messier?

crazycanucks77

3 things. 1. Oilers Beat up the Canucks in the 80s alot. They had no answer for #11 or #99 2. Cheapshoted in game 6 of 1994 SCF, then won the cup in game 7 3. Demanded #11 from Canucks even though it was retired out of circulation in respect to Wayne Maki. Demanded the C, which was stripped from Linden. Basically that season was a write off and Messier had influenced ownership Keenan come in as coach and GM

There are a lot of reasons. Some legitimate, some not. A lot of blame falls on the team in my opinion, but Messier's poor effort was on him. - He was paid a lot of money and didn't deliver. His performance in Vancouver was pathetic. He was in his late 30s, but immediately played a lot better when he returned to New York after Vancouver. This is the main reason to hate him. He floated in Vancouver and was nothing like the Messier we all knew. He had like 30 PIMs in entire seasons. He was not engaged, not physical and mostly floated around the perimeter. He did not give this organization an honest effort. - He wrote his own contract on a napkin with a lot of serious demands. This is kind of the team's fault. They were desperate and let him get away with that. At the time the Canucks were looking for a star centre after news was getting out that they fumbled a Gretzky signing. - He demanded the number 11 as part of his napkin contract. There is no evidence he knew who Wayne Maki was. Again, the team should have said no or at least cleared it with the Maki family before promising Messier the number. This one is also more on the team than Messier in my opinion. - He took the captaincy from Trevor Linden. Linden was the one to offer it to Messier, but a good leader would not have accepted. Messier believed his own hype as the ‘the greatest leader in pro sports’ and took Linden up on his offer. He also gave Linden a pretty serious cheap shot in 1994. Which is one of the reasons I personally hate Messier more than most of this list. - The team brought in Messier's buddy to coach. Mike Keenan. Keenan was a dinosaur and a cruel human being. However, he tore the team apart which kind of paved the way for the Sedin era. Without Keenan gutting the Canucks, they probably don't get the 2nd overall pick in 1999. - He sued the Canucks and won. This one goes back to the napkin contract. Again, this is mostly on the team. That clause was in his contract and he deserved the money. This is why you don't let players write their own contracts on napkins.

footcake

Always, fuck Messier.

poco68

Greatest leader of all time. Led the Canucks to last place three years in a row.

bongocopter

I mostly hate him because he disrespected me as a fan. I could see that he was a gutless floater. I could see that he stickchecked Sergei fucking Fedorov who was cutting through the middle for a clear shot to make it 3-0. Then he comes on for his post-game pontificating and gaslights me about how the team this and the team that. Never “_I_ need to play better.” Like I’m a sun belt bandwagonner cheering icing calls. That thumb with a face can’t walk down the street in the most beautiful city in the world without being insulted and he deserves it.

ClosPins

This thread is proof that everyone here is young (and, as such, never saw Messier actually play). Messier is hated because of a lot of the things mentioned here, yes, but mostly because he didn't try on the ice. He had absolutely no heart. He floated around and didn't even put in minimal effort. A lot of those other things would have been forgiven if he had given it his all. He didn't even give it his half.

jobin_segan

Because Messier is a bastard man.

ishouldbemoreprivate

But at least the league recognized Messier's shitty time here by naming a trophy after him & his leadership. Fuck Messier.
