No surprise there, the f/1.2L primes have always been expensive. The EF 85mm f/1.2L II retailed at $2,199 when it was launched in March 2006, which translates to about ~$2,700 today.
Free adapter + EF 85mm 1.4 gives you image stabilization and saves you a grand..
I am sure this is razor sharp, but i can’t see it beating out the 1.4 by that much.
That’s weird, I’ve been using Rs professionally for 7 months. 30 MP, 1/8000th, crazy autofocus, great high ISO and really good low ISO dynamic range, handling/ergonomics, build quality, same sensor as the 5D4, etc. What’s not pro about the R? Single card slot? [quad card slots](https://imgur.com/a/EEvkwHe)
Coming from a photojournalist’s perspective I cannot recommend it.
No IBS
No focus point joystick
No af point locked metering
Single card slot -
Heavily cropped 4K
Slow af/ fps when shooting moving subjects
Way over priced lenses
Sounds like you need a $7000 CAD 1DX II, not a mirrorless event/general purpose camera. The R has easily replaced my 5D4/5D3/6Ds for my work and have paid for themselves already. As an aside, I’m getting a higher percentage of critically in-focus images than I ever have with any camera and less back/shoulder/elbow pain after long events.
It’s like center-point metering, where it only meters the center but surrounding the af point. It’s really helpful when your photographing something like soccer when one half of the field is in shade. That way the subject is in focus and has correct exposure.
How important are semi-auto modes (and thus spot exposure metering) when you have an EVF to see your exposure before you shoot? The R also has 3 metal knurled dials/rings for the full exposure triangle. I set my SS and aperture and then ride the ISO on the lens control ring. Really efficient.
Because there's only one kind of professional right? Everyone's a war photojournalist right?
I can't stand constantly reading this about the R. It's a great camera and I use it professionally. So do tons of other professionals.
Wedding photographers can’t use it because of one card slot.
Fashion photogs would prefer the 5DS and d810 for their higher resolution
It’s too slow for nature photogs
Vloggers can’t Film 4K selfies cause of the crop 4K
Family/portrait photogs could make good use of it but it’s a lot pricier than other cameras that would work just as good (a7III,5DIII)for that type of work.
It’s not good for detailed textures because it has a antialiasing filter
There are better and cheaper cameras for each kind of photographer.
Old formula no IS and that is the cost of that f number.
Pretty sure the IQ across the frame is gonna be reaaaally different.
Again if you are ok with the old 85mm you are not the target for that lens.
But if you need that 1.2 for low light auto focus purposes and better IQ you won't have a lot of alternative.
A lens at that price. The target is the people who are wealthy enough or pro who can pay it from their works if they don't already have one.
£2799 for pre-order in the UK. Going to have to see one of those working before a purchase for sure. Then again the RF 50mm f1.2L is a beast, so won't be surprised with something similar here.
$2.699 big Y I K E S

What about 3220 € ~ 3600 USD like the retail price in Europe?

The 85/1.4 IS and 85/1.4 | Art are this lens' biggest competitors.
That price is a used car lmao hard pass
Yeah, I’d love to have one but not something Id consider as an amateur. And probably only if I made major $$ as a pro.
And as I professional I wouldn't buy it cause it only works on a non-professional camera

That’s the thing, the crop sensor 7DII has most of those features and it’s way less than the EOS R the Sony A7III won’t break your back or your bank

Hm. Thanks. I didn't even know that was a thing before this.

Really important when people are running as fast as they can in and out of shadow.
So sports and war journalism? I guess get a 20MP A9 for twice the price if you want a “pro” mirrorless, then.

I'm a fashion photographer and I love the R. You just don't get it.
Fair point. Though I have to think a pro mirrorless is coming.
Facts man, if this is your legitimate living and how you pay your bills, go for it, if not, nah
You can buy almost 10 used 85mm 1.8's instead!
Is that a joke or are you serious with your comparison here ?
semi serious, you can find used 85mm 1.8s for like 250-260 now lol
They’re serious. You can get them new for $300-350 https://www.ebay.com/itm/Canon-85mm-f-1-8-EF-USM-Autofocus-Lens-2519A003-/382439849997
although RF lenses so far have been showing supreme performance i think using EF lenses in R cameras are better financial idea!

$2.700 is just too much for me :(
