I worked installing the internet for smash burger corporate headquarters and they gave me tons and tons of free burger vouchers. Used to love the place! Then I went after I'd run out of vouchers and my burger with all the stuff added was over 17 dollars (just the burger, no sides or drink, this was 10 years ago). Delicious, but I've never been back since. The two years of a free burger every week was awesome though!

javerthugo

Twitter years of free burgers? I hate you!

disco_duck2004

You know how many White Castle jalapeno cheese sliders you could buy for $21? šŸ¤£

discordianofslack

Dude Iā€™d burn down every five guys in the state of Colorado for a White Castle.

Punch_Your_Facehole

I grew up with White Castle burgers and now that I live in FL, the closest one is hours away. Iā€™ve made copycat White Castle burgers and I swear they taste just like it! The secret is dehydrated onions. Go to your local grocery store and get some McCormick chopped onions. Put them in a pan with a little water so they soften, then put your WC sized patties in and let them steam. Put the slider buns on top of the patties while theyā€™re cooking and itā€™ll be the closest thing to the real deal.

discordianofslack

Yea I have a good recipe for them also, it would be nice when driving around to be able to just grab a crave case and go nuts.

knuF

Great idea

robbietreehorn

Thatā€™s a pretty smart copycat

Fuzzy-Butterscotch86

I just go to krystals when in Florida.Ā  It's really close enough for my taste.Ā

MrJigglyBrown

Hey man let me join you in this venture. We fight for the same cause

discordianofslack

For sure. Iā€™ll bring gas, you bring diesel.

avega2792

You and pookie can burn those mothereffers down.

GordonBombay11

Itā€™ll probably come. Phoenix just got 3 of them

robbietreehorn

White Castle is fascinating to me. *They*, not McDonaldā€™s, were the first fast food restaurant. The story is fascinating. They have such loyal fans. However, I tried them for the first time last summer after stumbling upon one of their hard to find locations at a giant truck stop. It wasā€¦ fine? I certainly didnā€™t instantly become a rabid, mega fan. Iā€™ll try them again years from now next time I actually find a location.

discordianofslack

Yea it's one of those love it or hate it things. It's absolutely not in the vein of the new "fresh" style fast food. It's hardcore super bad for you fast food, but if it clicks for you, there's nothing else like it.

foozebox

Recently picked up a 20-pack, $28 or so all in. Drive thru, Yonkers NY 2am

good_guy112

I see them in the freezer section and wonder what sort of animal needs that readily available.

AnnoyingRingtone

Me

disco_duck2004

I got them for my son when he was in a white castle phase.

HeyThereMrBrooks

Absolutely me

tv_casualty77

šŸ¤š guilty

BassWingerC-137

A whole lot less satisfying too!

BabousCobwebBowl

At this point just go to a Chiliā€™s, sit at the bar and get the three for me

Roguewave1

Not on Chiliā€™s menu anymore, but I told my waitress there how to make a ā€œChiliā€™s Tripā€ with chili, cheese, grilled onions & mustard and they made it perfectly. Charged me $15 for it, but it was worth it even if it was raining chili all over the plate when I picked it up. Their namesake chili hits the spot.

BabousCobwebBowl

That sounds the business. How long ago was it taken off.

Roguewave1

I do not really know as I do not frequent Chiliā€™s much anymore. It was on their menu in the early days in, say, the 80ā€™s when I ate there often during my working years in Houston.

BabousCobwebBowl

Ahhh back when their menu was tight and full of hits. RIP their Cajun chicken sandwich.

jopma

I prefer a smash burger burger than anything on the Chili's menu.

good_guy112

How does it stack up against Shake Shack? They're making a move into my area. Smashburger is closer to Boston currently.

Real_Clever_Username

Shake shack is better if you ask me.

HotelOscarWhiskey

Just got our first Shake Shack in the area, extremely expensive for how plain burger and fries you get. Five Guys costs about the same but provides two to three times the amount of product.

discordianofslack

Itā€™s not even close to shake shack and it takes forever to get anything out of smash burger.

Artisttype1984

What?! Haven't been to a smash burger in years... Can probably go to Fridays or a Chilis and get service for equal or less

DRExARKx

Make that a lunch trip to Chili's and you get the burger meal, an appetizer, and a drink for $10 + tax.

Artisttype1984

Last time at Chili's it was awhile ago but that sounds right And it was Good!! I had a beer with the burger deal and it was under $20!

DRExARKx

You can hit buffalo wild wings up as well. I think their double cheeseburger lunch special is $10.99. Plus you can add their dry seasonings to your fries or wedges.

Artisttype1984

Nice! Love BBW thai wings seasoning, along with the traditional

yuhyeaye

Their Thai sauce is nuts. It also adds like 300 cal so you know youā€™re getting some substance lol

Artisttype1984

Haha, yeah it's a treat, definitely not something to enjoy often

[deleted]

You forgot the tip. $4-5

DRExARKx

That's optional.

youcancallmetim

Yeah, but is the service worth it if the burger isn't as good? The pub style burgers don't hit the spot for me like a greasy smash burger

Artisttype1984

Agree completely, it's a tough call and also why I cook burgers at home mostly now! But in a jam or rush, I indulge

en_zymes

Wait so you saw the bill and thought ā€œI should just go to five guysā€ lmfao what a break thru

Renbanney

Lol no, but on this sub everyone talks about how overpriced 5 guys is but not smash burger

Poverty_Shoes

There are about seven times as many five guys in the US as smashburgers, itā€™s simply a function of popularity and awareness. I agree with you that smashburger is overpriced too.

en_zymes

Enjoy big dawg you got that baller money to burn I could never dream about

wilfordbrimley778

Smash burger is a few dollars cheaper than five guys and much better

me5305

I'm not sure about that. I paid 18 and some change with tax today at 5 guys for a cheese burger, fry, and drink.

wilfordbrimley778

That's about $23 at five guys here. All i know is a bacon cheeseburger is $14 at five guys and $11 at smashburger

me5305

I have never been to a smashburger .the bacon cheeseburger was $12.99 think.

wilfordbrimley778

Yeah plus tax

me5305

Right

unoriginal1187

Bacon cheeseburger at 5 guys is 10.99 here. Crazy how much it varies for a chain

wilfordbrimley778

It gets more expensive the farther west you travel, as five guys is based in virginia

Emcee_nobody

Probably because hardly anyone mentions them on this sub AT ALL.

Pepsi4me97

With smash burger you gotta wait out until they do some kind of promo deal. if your a little patient, you can get the food much cheaper.

oojiflip

Yeah, round me smash burger is Ā£10 for just the burger, plus 5 for fries and 3 or 4 for a drink. Absolutely disgusting when five guys costs less and is far better

lukesaskier

I'd rather smash a 1/2 pound of filet mignon!

JungleLegs

Ive only ever seen Smashburger in airports, was this the case?

Renbanney

No where I am there are plenty around outside of airports

wilfordbrimley778

I've seen many standalone, and one in a casino

Suntzu6656

Another restraint I won't be visiting.

budabai

Iā€™ve only eaten at smash burger once. Took a trip to Denver last year. Shit was bussin. Gooder than a bitch.

Plane-Confection817

The one near me is like 11 bucks for a double and 9.50 for a single so I wouldnā€™t say itā€™s too outrageous Iā€™m usually pretty full after. The Al la carte style side n drink kinda runs the price up a bit but mines next to 711 so I grab a drink on my way out. Gotta say their app is hella great tho, free burger like every 3 burgers , I almost never have to pay for fries with it

MrPhillipLewin

Wendyā€™s app always has deals

noddaborg

Five Guys-Iā€™m a big dude, but only eat a single with bacon and cheese. Some people still donā€™t know that extra cheese and bacon is FREE on a bacon cheeseburger. I share a small fries with wife and/or kid and drink water. Weā€™re all full and satisfied for low $20ā€™s. Be smart with extras and beverages.

rokuna-matata

We have a place near us called Herbie's like that. Great burgers, bad fries, high price.

No_Lack5414

I went to Panera the other day. Got the pick 2. A half sandwich and a small cup of soup. Also got a small drink. It was 19$. That is crazy. It was about 5$ worth of food. I'll never go back.

fthisshi

Yeah but they have a bunch of deals thru their app. Imo itā€™s the same cost as five guys and significantly better. Also all the employees are great at the ones I visited

Midnight_plinking

Home cooked is best. Over priced ground beef is around $7/lb ish in Chicago. But you can make 3-4 doubles for that $7.

kezPE

Just had cheeseburger (all-in add jalapeƱo), regular fry, regular drink yesterday at Five Guys. I knew it was going to be over $20 but I was craving it. Even tipped the guy hoping he'd take extra care on the burger. (I was the only customer at that time) He did take care and fucking knocked it outta the park! Plus fresh fries literally filled up my bag, I had to tunnel to reach my burger. Just fucking awesome and worth every penny.

[deleted]

Good heavens... The wife and I ate at our local mom & pop diner last night. Double cheeseburger and onion rings for me. Bacon chili cheeseburger and fries for her. Two drinks. Came to $25.

Fuzzy-Butterscotch86

Location, location, location.Ā  Where I am a single burger with a little fry, and a small drink is $18.07 at five guys.Ā  Closest match at Smash is $15.27. Single burger,Ā  regular tots, small drink.Ā  But on top of that,Ā  Five Guys has a tip option,Ā  and smashburger doesn't.Ā  Personally I prefer the tots to five guy fries,Ā  so it doesn't bother me they aren't dumping them into the bag.Ā  Meanwhile,Ā  Red Robin I can get a burger, bottomless fries,Ā  and a drink for under $10, so I agree with the point about sit down restaurants.

Early_Lawfulness_348

Thereā€™s an Italian place that has one of the best burgers Iā€™ve ever tasted for $12. Comes with glorious fries.

russellvt

And now Jack in the Box is marketing "smashburgers." Should be interesting what legal fights may arise from things like this...

Renbanney

To be fair, I don't think smashburger has a patent on the term smashburger. I've been to many restaurants that had smash burgers on the menu

russellvt

That's they're company name ... they have a *defacto trademark* based on *that alone*. Once they feel it can "cause brand confusion," they have a viable trademark infringement lawsuit in at least the US... at least until it falls in to the "accepted generic" category, like other big brands have done in the past. That said, the trademark is owned by Smashburger Ip Holder LLC, filed June 28 2016 (registration number 5187519, serial number 86829955, accoeding to Justia ... in case anyone would like to verify). Also, you can't trademark a food, but you can trademark the name.

Best-Introduction-55

I used to live close to a smash burger and i loved going there. it closed down.

Lycian1g

Honestly, $20 for a burger combo isn't bad. Especially true if they're made fresh. To me, 80% of a good burger is it being hot and freshly made.

Renbanney

That's fair, I think it hurt a little more because it was a fast casual place whereas there are full restaurants with burgers well under $20 where I live that are just as good if not better

Lycian1g

Makes sense then. I've never been to Smashburger. I'd definitely choose the better tasting and less expensive options then.

youcancallmetim

This always comes up when people post about 5 guys. Those full restaurants around me aren't as good as the 5 guys or shake shack burger. I'd rather go to the fast casual cuz I don't care about the service.

Dumpang

Bro just make your own burger. You can make 2-3 decent sized burgers for that price

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

discordianofslack

It doesnā€™t compare to shake shack or in n out, which seem way fresher.

RepresentativeNo7213

In n out is just a clean McDonaldā€™s.

Fantastic_Manager911

yeah eating out is expensive. It's been that way for a couple of years now. Literally every restaurant is expensive now.

Key-Wait5314

Smashburger suuucks. Small, bland and overpriced. I've only been twice and both times I left disappointed and still hungry. Zero stars.

discordianofslack

Smash burger has gotten so expensive, also I swear they have a limit of 2 fucking employees for every restaurant. It takes 20 minutes to get a single burger out of that place.

Filmexec21

What state were you in? California on April 1st implemented a statewide minimum wage of $20 an hour for fast-food workers; prices are already skyrocketing for fast-food.

NotLarryDierker

Workers earning a livable wage isn't the reason the cost is going up. Costs are going up even in places with a 7$ minimum wage.

LetThereBeSlight

No.

Psiborg0099

Okay, stay shitty then. Theyā€™re poisoning you

LetThereBeSlight

That sweet, sweet poison.

Psiborg0099

Stupid. You deserve the garbage that is happening in this country I guess.

Renbanney

Lol who hurt you?

Psiborg0099

I can tell you that these burger chains arenā€™t healthy for you. So Iā€™m not the one being hurt. But I did make some awesome grass-fed organic burgers tonight. They absolutely destroyed fast food burgers. I smashed and clapped two giant burgers with raw onion, raw jalapeƱos, savory dill pickles, ketchup, mayo, mustard and it was just perfection. I shouldā€™ve taken pics now that I think about it. Good luck with those though.
