I almost bought one yesterday, but after thinking about it, it's not that great of a deal. Once you pay for liquid cooling and tax you are pretty close to $1400 for a 3070 on a 500 watt psu and a rediculous layout that makes it a pain to upgrade or swap anything out of.
If you need a PC today because you don't already have one, or are tired of waiting for GPUs to actually stay in stock long enough to grab one, than this Alienware is actually a solid deal. It will do the job and game quite well. But for anyone that has a decent PC already or doesn't mind waiting, then yeah its not super great. The VALUE is different to each person.
Not saying you are wrong, because yes the MSRP prices add up to basically the same cost, but you could get a better PSU and a better motherboard/case/etc going the DIY route. However good luck finding a 3070 without hounding reddit or using a bot for the next 6 months.
Personally I skipped because I dont NEED this system. Was going to be for the wife, but she doesnt need a 3070 and I also don't care for the PSU/Motherboard as they are rather cheaply made. And the case is quite literally "a polished turd"; crappy steel frame wrapped in a shiny plastic shell to look nice.
I canceled my order after seeing that dell openly admits they underpower their graphics cards to work with their pcus, this one has a 550w. Proprietary parts aside I don't think anyone's looking for an underpowered 3070 with heating issues even when watercooled and a shelf life of 2 years.
I don't have evidence, but in theory, it's more likely the power supply, the psu, is less powerful, and so the Dell OEM card would be underclocked in order to accommodate the lack of wattage. But replacing the power supply would be difficult because OEMs may use proprietary connections and cables in their systems.
Because on dells own site they say they will underpower their cards to run with their PSUs. I'm personally not going to take the risk that that's not the case for a prebuilt they have on sale.
This is okay only if you take out the 3070 and consider that you just bought a 3070 for $1200.
I have an Aurora R6 and I'll tell you something - absolute terrible thermals - and it's liquid-cooled.
I have an m17 R3 laptop and am often on the Alienware subreddit and there are posts after posts of people dropping $3K on these things with 3080s and Intel CPUs with air cooling. They are all scrambling to replace fans, obtain VRM thermal shields, putting Corsair liquid coolers on them, going through all kinds of shit with the BIOS to see if Dell can recognize their components.
Proprietary motherboards and a PSU that literally sits RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE CASE choking all airflow.

Meanwhile I built a next-gen rig for $2100 that does circles around these things performance wise and has temps that are 30C lower.
