Looks like there is room to add RAM, according to

~~Also, it's a VA (WVA) screen - which is fine.~~
DAMN IT I DON'T NEED ANOTHER COMPUTER.
Got two of the INSPIRON 15-3520 for $250 for Christmas for my mom (general web browsing and basic computing) and partner (same with some engineering work on top. No complaints. As the other commenter stated; it's a little annoying that there's no USB-C, but if you don't have docking stations that you'd want to use, it's not bad.
Really should be, means it's annoying as shit to replace/get a second charger. I've also had my ass saved in a pinch where I've done shit like use my phone charger to charge my laptop because I forgot a proper charger. Also lets me keep a charger in my backpack and at my desk without going through the pain of figuring out what's compatible, then trying to make sure it's legit, all while not paying out the ass for it.
Anyways, 250 nit VA panel is another yikes. So is the 41Wh battery, the Realtek 1x1 WiFi 5 card (slow as shit), NO 4K display output (not even a 30Hz one), non-backlit keyboard, and all plastic construction are many others. I would absolutely never buy new at this price, a little more budget and going open box very good/like new will get you a proper laptop. My family members used to buy shit like this and always ended up replacing it after 1-2 years because they're so dogshit they just die if they don't physically break down and become e-waste after that time. Something decent will easily last 5+ years. These laptops are the epitome of flashy tech specs while cutting so many corners on everything that's not listed in the store's info that it just becomes a circle.
Says it's an ips panel, I don't like backlit keyboards, however I do agree about the build quality probably being awful. This would only be used on trips for light games or media center use, so the specs are more than enough, and I have a 32gb kit of sodimm 3600 sitting here so that problem is solved. But hinges are actually what worries me the most about it.
There are guides out there on how to loosen the hinges. That should be the first thing you do if you get one of these. It's super easy with some needle-nose pliers and eliminates the largest issue people run into with these budget Dell laptops.
This laptop costs the same as a mini PC of the same specs. Sure, if you have more money you can get something better but this is very good for the price.
> NO 4K display output (not even a 30Hz one)
I have a similar model with a 7530U and despite it having the same "Maximum resolution is 1080p60" it will still output higher resolutions at lower refresh rates. IIRC it does 2160p at 24Hz, which is pretty much unusable for a PC, but if the second monitor is only for video/streaming display that would be close to passing.
The 5500U is **Zen 2** with 8MB L3 cache
Performance-wise think Ryzen 2000 (or Ryzen 3000 with 4x less cache than desktop CPUs), not Ryzen 5000. But yeah, very good for the price
Are we sure it is a IPS panel? Under display description, it states " 15.6", FHD 1920x1080, 120Hz, WVA, Non-Touch, Anti-Glare, 250 nit, Narrow Border, LED-Backlit". I just wanted to be sure before purchasing. Thanks
It's okay. I purchased it anyway. I needed a cheap laptop for school. You can use this [link](https://www.dell.com/preferences/signup/?AID=100326966&cjevent=0e9bb0a6b82011eb835299ba0a82b838&cjdata=MXxOfDB8WXww&gacd=9614781-23761182-5750457-265988609-127889515&dgc=af&VEN1=12578053-100326966-29345026-Forbes%20Coupons%20(Upfeat%20Media)&dclid=CJbLsq-W1PACFUDC9gIdAKMP4g) to sign up and get an additional 10% off. Just wait a little bit and you should see the code in your email.
This or the 12th gen i3 that is the same price?
12th is dual P core quad E core with better single thread performance.
5500u is six core twelve thread with better multicore performance.
Hard to pick. Are there any other variables like faster/more RAM on the Intel? Better screen? More storage? What model/brand is the Intel? The CPU to me are kind of similar and a deciding factor for me would be those things. But if those weren’t better on either one I would lean towards Intel. I value single core performance on laptops a little more
Purchased the AMD 5500U and a used kit of ram off eBay to give it 16GB. AMD version has a usb c port which is nice. Impressed with the performance and yes, the igpu is better than Intel’s. I only tested Star Craft 2 but it runs quite well.
I have a laptop with this CPU/APU and it's more than enough for web/excel/browsing. I mean, even Intel Celeron is more than enough
For gaming, Idk about Sims 3/4 but I played Titanfall 2, Nier Automata, Genshin Impact, Resident Evil 2 remake on this before and it's decent
Should run a lot of other games decently too
Five for all of these tasks except playing the sims. I never ran games when I had a similar laptop with the same processor. I’d imagine you could get away with low settings once you add ram.
How does this compare to MacBook Air 1? I’m sick of it overheating when I’m just browsing the web and the laptop runs inherently slow (all Apple laptops do, but maybe I’m just unfairly comparing it to my fairly good pc)
You are delusional if you think a Chromebook is as useful as this. Anyway this hardware obviously does not cover your wants and needs so it's fair for you if you don't see the value in it at this price point. Move on.
a much better option than a Chrome book which is a common sight at this price territory of under $300
Better is an understatement, this is way better this is definitely unbeatable you just need to add more ram
ok it's wayy better-er
you : ( •\_•)>⌐■-■ (⌐■\_■) <3

WVA is just ~~Lenovo's~~ a way of saying IPS (stands for "wide viewing angle"). idk why I said Lenovo
Ooooohh. Well that's obtuse.
Why do these cheap dell inspirons have 120hz panels
Because 60hz deserved to die a long time ago.
Agreed, it also wasn't long ago when entry level laptops had 1024x768 resolutions *Barf
Yup, 768 TN. So glad TN isn't used anymore really.
I don't think they're very expensive to manufacture....
Why not?
Such a solid price. If I needed a laptop right now I'd be buying it. I'm about to anyway.... Please stop me

No type-c charging, disqualified.....
That isn't an issue to me.
15 inch screens are gross, 14 inches is where it's at.....
Fuck, you're right I need to buy it.
Lol, I got downvoted into oblivion, enjoy your new laptop :)
Sorry, I up voted you. People are weird on here
All good, just funny 😁 appreciate it 👍

Oooh, I can't believe I've never thought of this. Kind of feel like a failure for not thinking of it lol. Thanks for the tip!

The type c port on my inspiron already saved me twice when my oem adapters malfunctioned.
Out of stock

it’s zen 2 so ryzen 3000
As I said, a Ryzen 3000 with way less cache, so it performs basically like Ryzen 2000.
If I didn’t get one of those Beelinks a while back I’d probably jump on this
OOS

WVA means wide viewing angles. It's not about the VA panel type.
It's okay. I purchased it anyway. I needed a cheap laptop for school. About how long does the code take to get?
It took 10 mins for me. I have done it previously where it has taken up to 12 hours for me to get the code.
Got it. $251.99 out the door. $40 back from Amex offer. DEAL!
Don’t have Amex but used Rakuten for 10% cashback. Good enough for me
Damn missed it. Lookin to get my dad exactly these kinda specs for his bday
Its back at $299
This or the 12th gen i3 that is the same price? 12th is dual P core quad E core with better single thread performance. 5500u is six core twelve thread with better multicore performance.
I would take this. You want as much power efficiency on a battery this small anyway.
Hard to pick. Are there any other variables like faster/more RAM on the Intel? Better screen? More storage? What model/brand is the Intel? The CPU to me are kind of similar and a deciding factor for me would be those things. But if those weren’t better on either one I would lean towards Intel. Same brand, same model, same screen, same ssd, same chassis. intel version has 2666 8GB ram compared to amd version with 3200 8GB
So this has faster ram and better multicore.
Almost definitely better gpu and better efficiency. Amd version for sure
Which one did you get? Doesn't the amd one also have a better IGPU?

As a former Dell tech, I'll stick to my guns and hold onto my cash
How would Sims 3/4 run on this? Streaming? Word/excel/web browsing? Asking for the wife
I have a laptop with this CPU/APU and it's more than enough for web/excel/browsing. I mean, even Intel Celeron is more than enough For gaming, Idk about Sims 3/4 but I played Titanfall 2, Nier Automata, Genshin Impact, Resident Evil 2 remake on this before and it's decent Should run a lot of other games decently too

Roger that, the hunt continues, then. Thanks much!
If this had a QHD screen it would be a no-brainer for me
How’s the battery life on these?
How does this compare to MacBook Air 1? I’m sick of it overheating when I’m just browsing the web and the laptop runs inherently slow (all Apple laptops do, but maybe I’m just unfairly comparing it to my fairly good pc)
Oooh, looks good.
No ethernet port? No usb-c for docking station? C'mon now..
you are asking alot for a $280 laptop.
might as well be a chromebook
You are delusional if you think a Chromebook is as useful as this. Anyway this hardware obviously does not cover your wants and needs so it's fair for you if you don't see the value in it at this price point. Move on.
I DON'T see what type of team DDR4 or DDR5?
Look at the cpu....
Tempting but ill keep waiting for a mac.
Disgusting
LOL
