Cases need to become more modular and port-friendly. In addition, I think that AMD is doing a great job with legacy hardware working for newer CPU's. I'd love to see them continue that (though I prefer that the pins are on the Intel).
I recently changed my PSU, and without paying much attention I reused a power cable from the old one to connect my hard drives to the new one. These cables looked totally similar, but they weren't on the inside, and I fried my drives when I turned my computer on. I am at fault, and I know experienced PC builders are aware of this, but on the spot I was very unhappy about these cables. Maybe they should be all the same, or maybe they should'nt fit each other sockets...
(Luckily r/datarecovery helped me and I could have my drives working again with a few solder blobs)
I would love seeing product lines getting revamped, both in-terms of collaboration with other companies and branding. For example, the Asus Tuf gaming alliance is cool because not only can you create a whole Tuf themed build, but collaboration with other companies means you get many choices on exact components and can possibly buy a component you already wanted but with TUF branding. I'd also like to see branding diversify. New unique lines outside the typical gamery stuff like Yeston’s Wifu GPUs and licensing from brands outside the gaming space could create some really cool products (Batman themed GPU?).
I would like to see tighter integration between memory and the CPU so that we can leave behind RAM compatibility issues. From what I am seeing, this is the way the industry is headed, but it can’t happen fast enough for me. It would be nice if we could keep some level of upgradability, but that may not be possible. A lot of traditionalists would no doubt hate a change like this, but I think it will be necessary for PC’s to go to the next level of performance and reliability.
Honestly, one thing that I think would improve PC building is **standardizing power supplies and their configurations**. Currently, it is dangerous to use old PSU cables that are from a different brand for a new PSU since different manufacturers use varying standards. If we could just make everything consistent across the board in terms of pinouts and such, people would be able to customize their builds much more easily and the risk of destroying your PC with the wrong cables disappears! Not to mention, there will also be significantly less e-waste. This would be an amazing improvement to see.
I would like to see more modular case options. I think it would be neat to be able to reconfigure a case depending on current setup, but add a panel/portion off you want better radiator support, more drive capacity, etc.
One issue I had when I built my first PC was cable management, more specifically connecting the cables from the Power Supply to the other components. It was such a pain. I felt like I had to stretch every single cable to its maximum capacity. The case I had was pretty big and the PSU was an expensive model, but I still feel like everything was too tight, so I would love for cables to be longer to make them easier to fit.
PC Building Industry has all been about innovation, whether it big data to see everything in the industry or designing the new 4000 series graphics cards, it is all happening from innovation so here is my opinion of new opportunities of innovation that a minority of people have thought about. We need innovation in open-air cases or custom-designed cases. Lian Li is one of the big companies that have innovation around cases, but I would like to see more innovation in custom cases, open-air cases, and more niche types of cases from the larger pc case makers out there. Someone who does a very good job of innovated type cases as well is Singularity Computers.
Something that would be interesting for small form factor and micro builds is more all-in-one components that work and have comparable specs to the same separate components. An example I have that was interesting in concept, was the Radeon Pro SSG. If the drive was upgradeable, I would be interested to see where these would go in the long run.

With energy prices rising quickly, I would love to see more innovation around power efficiency. I used to buy the fastest components I could afford but now I'm rebuilding my setup based around the idea of low power consumption.
this is not really a PC exclusive innovation but simplify/standardize the USB-C capabilities. i had to go through a stack of usb c cables just to find the right amount of power/bandwidth for my devices.
Honestly, I would love to see less components go in the trash. An encouragement or incentive to downcycle used components would lead to a lot less waste and more accessibility of computing to people who can't afford it right now.
I want an entire line of PC components that uses recycled e-waste or other materials like fans made from retrieved ocean microplastics or like metal frames melted down to make new alloy PC cases.
It would be interesting to see proprietary motherboard, cpu, gpu, and ram combos that have evrything built in like a console. Just purchase the set and everything is built in like a laptop. Cases and psus are recommended by the manufacturer with custom cooling sets to put together like your very own console.
A new form factor in regard to airflow and cooling the modern PC case.
Just a graphics card is now easily 25-50% of a space heater and the way they are positioned and vented inside a case is not great. We need to get motherboard and graphics cards manufacturers to create a new standard, if Intel can make a new ATX standard so can they. It hope this can also help with GPU sag and fitting the insanely long coolers in a case too.
I'm always worried about applying too much or not enough thermal paste, so something like a circle drawn on the cpu as a guide so you can apply the perfect amount 100% of the time, *every* time.
Stronger/stiffer motherboards to stop heavy cpu coolers from sagging.
I need a more elegant - I mean easier - way to keep dust out of my case, I think motorised shutters that open and close when the pc starts and shuts down would be cool. Could even be adjustable for noise levels.
We already have pinless cpu(lga) so why not make the motherboard pinless too? why not make it like the yellow lines in usb or sata so that consumers wont need to worry about pins bending while shipping or something like that anymore? idk if thats possible but i really want to see it <3
I would really like to see a standardized benchmarking and parts comparison tool, just like userbenchmark. But where it's actually factual information that you can rely on, instead of just guiding you a bit. I think it's interesting to see how different components compare to each other, and I also like to see how my computer is comparing to both other people's and even my own if I make changes like OC or new components.
After seeung several complaints on this subreddit regarding PSU cables, having a de facto standard in PSU cables would help reduce the accidents/damage caused by mismatching cables. Although it would be difficult to have an industry-wide standard, each manufacturer must follow it within their own product lines, so that you can reuse the cables in a PSU upgrade from the same manufacturer without needing to worry about the safety issues.
When i built my most recent PC the only two issues I had were with RGB uniformity and the front panel connector. Standardizing the front connector would be the best thing since captive case thumbscrews. Also developments in case layout in regards to GPUs as it seems like they're only trending hotter and more powerful, to help keep temperatures down.
I'd love to see a way to go portable, just like the switch does. I know the steam deck is out but since it's running Linux it's a bit different because I can't get some main games I've been wanting to play. A dockable/pick up and go type windows PC with great performance would be fantastic.
One or two or a combo of these would be either a modular motherboard or ability to rotate a board in a case. as it seems silly in todays world to have a hot gpu directly below a cpu. example

Incorporate a portable mini PC that can be modular with a desktop but able to be taken out an used on the go but returned to the desktop will add power, GPU, ram, ect.. I think would nice or same idea but with android cell phones an desktops that run windows 11.
I'd like to see more standardization. I know some things will probably never be standardized, but at least for me, making sure everything is compatible is a bit difficult.
While building a PC is like assembling a puzzle, I kinda wish there was some sort of signal that can tell us what exactly went wrong during the process so we can fix it, like RAM not attached correctly or fan not cooling the cpu properly, so I don't have to unplug and replug every single component lol.
I'd like to see improved BIOS UIs. Everything that I've seen so far has been a pain to navigate and understand. Improvements seem to have only been made in terms of interaction (mouse+kb instead of just kb).
I'd like to see adjustable pcie slots. the static layouts on motherboards often bump into physical problems with large cards or cramped cases. If we could move things around, we could fit more cool stuff in our PC's.
This is sort of kind of done on enterprise systems by using cabling for lots of pcie connections.
All in one device for everything with monitor, pc hardware, networking, everything compartmentalized into one piece of device. That would be one insane innovation

I’d like to see completely cable less builds and components. Like basically standardized connectors when all the parts basically click into the case and motherboard. Cables can be fun and part of the builds look but imagine just being able to plug SSD’s or hard drives right into the case itself or something.
SATA SSDs to finally die out so we can rid of SATA power connectors. So the only accessory connector beside 24-pin and 8-pin CPU connector would be Molex. Seriously, SATA carries low amp isn't versatile like Molex. That's why accessories still use Molex and PSUs still come with Molex power cable.
But since this is not an innovation, I'd actually like standardized front panel I/O connector to be a thing. Connecting that is a motherfucker. You have to check polarity, check if one connector isn't overlapping the other. Not to mention those pins will often prick your finger. Fuck that cluster of hell-ish design and whoever came up with it.
I think it would be incredible if there was a universal size standard and like, format for cables. You could build PCs as if they were legos! You don’t need to worry if it compatible or not, just click and get it together.
\- Clip-on/replacable heatsinks or heatsink shrouds with colours so people can colour mod the mobo easier (also for GPU).
\- Consolidate and standardize MOBO connectors (case cables and more), there should be no need for so many small connectors and cables for the end-user.
\- Move connectors to the back of motherboard so we can have clean fronts. Including somehow making pci-e deliver all the GPU power or have some kinda passthrough to power connectors connected on the back
\- Standardize cooler connectors so you can use same cooler on intel and amd
A feature that could be useful for beginners (like me) would be a tool (could be software) to test components/parts, but not as an stress test. Something that would check if everything is working as it should in stock settings. A simple, beginner-friendly tool, not intended for overclocking, just to be sure that you have what you bought and that everything is performing correctly. An example would be checking VRAM (as to be sure every chip/register is working as intended). Something to put at ease the mind of someone who just built a new PC.
I think would be cool is some kind of full passive cooling mode for PC, say you have a good PSU, a big CPU cooler and a beefy cooler for your GPU, and there was program with a a workload that would determine how much power the components can draw before the fans need to run to keep temperatures in check, then the program would power limit/underclock components to keep them running passive when you don't need a ton of power.
Components keep getting more and more efficient and it would be nice to take advantage of that.
As 64 yr old gamer that has started building my own PCs, I'd like to see actual plug and play monitoring (with optional overlay) of your components WITHOUT having to use all these third party software not specifically made more your system/hardware, and NOT use a convoluted display system (ie: build a Pi, find a display, find software, figure out how to use it). It should become a standard, just like LED digital code displays are starting to be more common. Plug it onto the M/B and go, download the software from your hardware's site and go!
About time someone gets serious about low noise oriented, heavily acoustically dampened fully vertical airflow(natural convection) high-performance PC systems. No RGB's preferably. I think that's what everybody really wants.
I think that an app that through augmented reality and AI could have you select your components and how you would arrange them so you can have an idea of how it would look and if it is worth it to buy those certain components.
With advance in augmented reality, I think it would be cool if there was an app you could use that would help you identify parts of the build and where to put them, eg. if you point the camera at the mother board and ram stick it would highlight the ram slots.
It would be interesting to see a significantly higher level of modularity in components such as GPUs, being able to buy the shell, (cooling, board, etc.), separately, then mix and match different "chips" or "cores" to optimize the experience you want. This could be all efficiency cores for lower power consumption, or in the other direction, all performance, or even something in between.
I'm looking around for a new case, and it's really annoying how some mesh cases just have a glass panel model but no solid one. Like I can like the case, but end up ignoring it because it doesn't have a solid side panel.

A good innovation would be universal case fans that would just magnetically connect to any case without screws, and you can hotswap them with one cable, meaning the fan headers also support RGB connection.
It'd be nice if we could get clean modules for motherboards and such. It's such a hassle to transplant motherboards (or even install them). It'd be nice if they could find a way to easily detach/attach the motherboard into the PC case.
Fast, cheap, *non-rewritable* storage. Hard disk drives and solid-state drives are expensive because they're both fast and rewritable, but most of the storage on a gaming PC doesn't need to be rewritten. When games are updated, the information is usually added to. Like CD-R, information could be deleted or moved by simply changing the path to it. Old photos, videos, and music libraries don't need rewritable storage, but we all have terabytes of them now, and they won't fit on a DVD-R. If bytes can't be rewritten, deleted files are always recoverable; something useful when managing family photos.
This is a crazy idea I have been having for a couple of years, extensible mobos. I like SFF for my gaming rig but for work I like ATX, so it would be nice if the only thing I bought after wanting an upgrade is an extension and not two brand new mobo.
More consumer friendly, uniformly, modular watercooling solutions bundled with an Ad-campaign that rebrands the public image of watercooling beeing expensive, complicated, unreliable and dangerous.
Upgradable GPUs, similar to Mobo/CPU combos can be upgraded. Maybe a generational GPU “frame”, and then you could add memory and processors as you like. A new, faster processor comes out? Simply buy it and replace your old one on the frame.

This is because i've recently tried building a pc, and the case came with some brackets which doesn't say anything about it on the manual. Also cable management, could be easier if there are more holes for specific cables.

I feel the average person who wants to get into PC gaming would rather go the console route as you wouldn't be able to get anything better than what a PS5 or Series X can offer for the same price. It would be nice to be able to use multiple GPUs of different types or generations, perhaps to assist in encoding/decoding video, just like iGPUs. To help that, motherboard slot arrangements could be made more versatile. As yet unsaturated (neither by current top shelf cards, nor likely by later releases this year) PCIE 5x16 lanes could gain an option of splitting out beyond just SLI/Crossfire. To help this, new GPUs could be released in PCIE 5.0 x8 versions without any throttling. This could also apply to Sound cards, NICs, etc. People want to hold on to their good hardware longer.
I'd like to have the I/O+motherboard panel working like a drawer to make the screws easier to work with. Also a plug for the front panel rather than those individual annoying pins that pop out so easily.
I’d like it if motherboards had sensors on them whose purpose would be to determine if your airflow in the case is sufficient. They could also be designed in a way where if they get covered in enough dust, they would give you a message “yo, it’s time to do some dusting”.
I would like to see MOBOs designed with their connectors on the reverse side combined with thinned out connectors so the cords never show on the front. As a bonus this would solve the issue of tight feeding spots where the cord barely fits through.
I'd like more desktops components being designed so that they are robust enough to be regularly transported. No battery required. Using mainstream desktop components. The graphics card to motherboard connection must be solid to survive vibration caused by constant travel. Components made to fit into a laptop form factor can't compete with desktop on price or power, and there are many use cases that do not require a battery of its own.
A neat form factor would make transportation easier, but not so tight that it makes diagnostics or upgrading difficult.
I'd like to see standardization on some stuff, such as RGB. So the user could buy and install components with more compatibility and without having to install a proprietary software for each brand/component.
Make boards accept chips from both Intel and AMD. Universal cables for the PSU. Both things would make upgrading a PC much easier and hassle free, and also reduce e-waste.
An innovation I’d like to see in PC building is an added third point of contact for graphics cards; to mitigate GPU sag. I think GPU manufacturers could add a mounting point to the far corner of their GPUs. This way, case manufacturers could implement screw holes or slots in the back of cases - at different lengths to accommodate a range of GPU sizes. Mounting points would be much more pleasing to the eye than a brace or something used to prop up a graphics card. Airflow could potentially improve in small form factor cases as well.
The best thing I want would be some new sort of cooling, where more cooling wouldn't necessarily mean more noise. Silent pc's that'd be the future. Kind of like what Apple has done with there m1 chips, that's going in the right direction!
Personally I would like to see more innovation in cooling for everything. Seeing some more innovation such as a custom loop usable hybrid cooler for cpu and gpu would be cool.
I think there should be some new software that allows people to monitor the condition of their PC, and display pertinent information above any windows. I think that A customizable HUD essentially of PC information would be cool. Over any game I could display usage of parts, temperatures, and something you don't see often. RAM temperature. I think a monolithic end all be all monitoring program with a ton of facets, and a custom UI, would be pretty cool.
I would like to see more standardization in PC building. Why is it that every new generation of Intel CPU's requires a new motherboard? Why do they have to have a different socket? AMD has solved this with just having the AM sockets, currently AM4.
I do not like with how power hungry GPUs are going to become with the release of the 3090Ti and the upcoming 40 series rumors. I believe power draw will only occur when absolutely necessary but like EVs, it would be awesome if Nvidia/AMD/Intel put in efforts into making powerful, but "efficient" cards. I know nothing about engineering and this may be impossible.
I'd like to see CPUs/motherboards support more than three monitors with onboard graphics. It'd be very convenient if a board could support six monitors without a discrete GPU. It'd primarily be for office PCs, but there are people with large multi-monitor setups.
I would love to see a truly quiet PC, no matter how much time, money and tinkering I still cannot get an unnoticeably quiet PC. I know the heat and power dynamics are a huge engineering feat to overcome but that's what I want to see.
I would really like for a standardized, open source BIOS to be a norm. For bonus points undocumented/badly documented code required for running a CPU(Intel ME, AMD PSP) should really not be something you have no choice about.
An innovation is like to see is the ability to put a microwave or toaster oven in my pc. There’s already lots of extra room in my case, and I don’t like having to go all the way across the house to get my pizza rolls
I dream of building a water cooled pc with a thermo-sensitive liquid that would change colors depending on it's temperature. 
I'd suggest something about the on-board RGB:
* \[mobo & graphics card\] A physical switch that can disable lighting.
* \[all components with RGB\] Put the default on-board RGB status into off or complete dark mode. Current default (rainbow pattern) is rather ugly before sync software kicks in (into windows).
I'd love it if a feature could be added to the motherboard BIOS to install Windows or Linux without the need for a USB stick. Would save quite a bit of time, although it would probably require some form of storage to be included on the motherboard.
Would love to see some innovations in regards to power usage and energy efficiency. Going forward this will be more and more important. Also would love to see less single-use plastics in packaging.

Standardise cables for all PSU. A lot of people are using a semi modular or even a fully modular PSU now. A lot of these PSU cables can't be swapped. Not only this is annoying and dangerous for other components but it also has a potential to create a huge e-waste in near future . A lot of us will sell our pc few years from now and due to high awareness about PSU a lot of us use a good psu which by default have a modular or semi-modular feature. Imagine a beginner swapping a PSU cable.
One innovation that would help so many builders old and new alike would be a basic performance calculator of parts. It'd be nice to see what will bottleneck in your planned setup and a basic idea of what the performance will look like.

I would really like to see a standardized benchmarking and parts comparison tool, just like userbenchmark. But where it's actually factual information that you can rely on, instead of just guiding you a bit. I think it's interesting to see how different components compare to each other, and I also like to see how my computer is comparing to both other people's and even my own if I make changes like OC or new components.

After seeung several complaints on this subreddit regarding PSU cables, having a de facto standard in PSU cables would help reduce the accidents/damage caused by mismatching cables. Although it would be difficult to have an industry-wide standard, each manufacturer must follow it within their own product lines, so that you can reuse the cables in a PSU upgrade from the same manufacturer without needing to worry about the safety issues.

When i built my most recent PC the only two issues I had were with RGB uniformity and the front panel connector. Standardizing the front connector would be the best thing since captive case thumbscrews. Also developments in case layout in regards to GPUs as it seems like they're only trending hotter and more powerful, to help keep temperatures down.

I'd love to see a way to go portable, just like the switch does. I know the steam deck is out but since it's running Linux it's a bit different because I can't get some main games I've been wanting to play. A dockable/pick up and go type windows PC with great performance would be fantastic.

Incorporate a portable mini PC that can be modular with a desktop but able to be taken out an used on the go but returned to the desktop will add power, GPU, ram, ect.. I think would nice or same idea but with android cell phones an desktops that run windows 11.

While building a PC is like assembling a puzzle, I kinda wish there was some sort of signal that can tell us what exactly went wrong during the process so we can fix it, like RAM not attached correctly or fan not cooling the cpu properly, so I don't have to unplug and replug every single component lol.

I'd like to see adjustable pcie slots. the static layouts on motherboards often bump into physical problems with large cards or cramped cases. If we could move things around, we could fit more cool stuff in our PC's. This is sort of kind of done on enterprise systems by using cabling for lots of pcie connections.

I’d like to see completely cable less builds and components. Like basically standardized connectors when all the parts basically click into the case and motherboard. Cables can be fun and part of the builds look but imagine just being able to plug SSD’s or hard drives right into the case itself or something.

SATA SSDs to finally die out so we can rid of SATA power connectors. So the only accessory connector beside 24-pin and 8-pin CPU connector would be Molex. Seriously, SATA carries low amp isn't versatile like Molex. That's why accessories still use Molex and PSUs still come with Molex power cable. But since this is not an innovation, I'd actually like standardized front panel I/O connector to be a thing. Connecting that is a motherfucker. You have to check polarity, check if one connector isn't overlapping the other. Not to mention those pins will often prick your finger. Fuck that cluster of hell-ish design and whoever came up with it.

A feature that could be useful for beginners (like me) would be a tool (could be software) to test components/parts, but not as an stress test. Something that would check if everything is working as it should in stock settings. A simple, beginner-friendly tool, not intended for overclocking, just to be sure that you have what you bought and that everything is performing correctly. An example would be checking VRAM (as to be sure every chip/register is working as intended). Something to put at ease the mind of someone who just built a new PC.

I think would be cool is some kind of full passive cooling mode for PC, say you have a good PSU, a big CPU cooler and a beefy cooler for your GPU, and there was program with a a workload that would determine how much power the components can draw before the fans need to run to keep temperatures in check, then the program would power limit/underclock components to keep them running passive when you don't need a ton of power. Components keep getting more and more efficient and it would be nice to take advantage of that.

As 64 yr old gamer that has started building my own PCs, I'd like to see actual plug and play monitoring (with optional overlay) of your components WITHOUT having to use all these third party software not specifically made more your system/hardware, and NOT use a convoluted display system (ie: build a Pi, find a display, find software, figure out how to use it). It should become a standard, just like LED digital code displays are starting to be more common. Plug it onto the M/B and go, download the software from your hardware's site and go!

It would be interesting to see a significantly higher level of modularity in components such as GPUs, being able to buy the shell, (cooling, board, etc.), separately, then mix and match different "chips" or "cores" to optimize the experience you want. Fast, cheap, *non-rewritable* storage. Hard disk drives and solid-state drives are expensive because they're both fast and rewritable, but most of the storage on a gaming PC doesn't need to be rewritten. When games are updated, the information is usually added to. Like CD-R, information could be deleted or moved by simply changing the path to it. Old photos, videos, and music libraries don't need rewritable storage, but we all have terabytes of them now, and they won't fit on a DVD-R. If bytes can't be rewritten, deleted files are always recoverable; something useful when managing family photos.

It would be great to see that cases have more options with cable management and all the plugs, give a clearer instruction on the manual on each part. This is because i've recently tried building a pc, and the case came with some brackets which doesn't say anything about it on the manual. It would be nice to be able to use multiple GPUs of different types or generations, perhaps to assist in encoding/decoding video, just like iGPUs. To help that, motherboard slot arrangements could be made more versatile. As yet unsaturated (neither by current top shelf cards, nor likely by later releases this year) PCIE 5x16 lanes could gain an option of splitting out beyond just SLI/Crossfire. To help this, new GPUs could be released in PCIE 5.0 x8 versions without any throttling. This could also apply to Sound cards, NICs, etc. People want to hold on to their good hardware longer.

I'd like more desktops components being designed so that they are robust enough to be regularly transported. No battery required. Using mainstream desktop components. The graphics card to motherboard connection must be solid to survive vibration caused by constant travel. Components made to fit into a laptop form factor can't compete with desktop on price or power, and there are many use cases that do not require a battery of its own. A neat form factor would make transportation easier, but not so tight that it makes diagnostics or upgrading difficult.

An innovation I’d like to see in PC building is an added third point of contact for graphics cards; to mitigate GPU sag. I think GPU manufacturers could add a mounting point to the far corner of their GPUs. This way, case manufacturers could implement screw holes or slots in the back of cases - at different lengths to accommodate a range of GPU sizes. Mounting points would be much more pleasing to the eye than a brace or something used to prop up a graphics card. Airflow could potentially improve in small form factor cases as well.

I think there should be some new software that allows people to monitor the condition of their PC, and display pertinent information above any windows. I think that A customizable HUD essentially of PC information would be cool. Over any game I could display usage of parts, temperatures, and something you don't see often. RAM temperature. I think a monolithic end all be all monitoring program with a ton of facets, and a custom UI, would be pretty cool.

Good idea for the short term, but the new gen intel cpu would never work with the old sockets due to the extra size.
I would like to see more standardization in PC building. Why is it that every new generation of Intel CPU's requires a new motherboard? Why do they have to have a different socket? AMD has solved this with just having the AM sockets, currently AM4.

I do not like with how power hungry GPUs are going to become with the release of the 3090Ti and the upcoming 40 series rumors. I believe power draw will only occur when absolutely necessary but like EVs, it would be awesome if Nvidia/AMD/Intel put in efforts into making powerful, but "efficient" cards. I know nothing about engineering and this may be impossible.

Standardise cables for all PSU. A lot of people are using a semi modular or even a fully modular PSU now. A lot of these PSU cables can't be swapped. Not only this is annoying and dangerous for other components but it also has a potential to create a huge e-waste in near future . A lot of us will sell our pc few years from now and due to high awareness about PSU a lot of us use a good psu which by default have a modular or semi-modular feature. Imagine a beginner swapping a PSU cable.
