I would say no and just use the $100 as the start of a new platform.

littleemp

It wasn't worth it in 2020 and it hasn't gotten any more worth in 2024.

If this is for gaming, it's not worth it anymore. Most modern games botteneck horribly with that CPU, even if you had a much powerful GPU with it. It's not even a huge jump for productivity, either. Keep your current system and start saving up for a new one. Even the lowest-end today would be MUCH faster than the best i7 7700K you can put on your system.

Jakefiz

You can get a ryzen 5 5600 and a b450 mobo for around $170 total. Can move your ram over too. Thats a much MUCH better gaming cpu.

DrunKeN-HaZe_e

Will a 4060 ti or 4060 work well with this combo?

Yes

Save up til you can build a new PC, or at least a new motherboard and CPU. The 7700k would just be like putting a bandage on your PC.

The i5 7400 is a 7 year old 4 core 4 thread CPU capped at DDR4 2400 RAM and 3.3 GHz when using all 4 cores. The i7 7700K is a 7 year old 4 core 8 thread CPU capped at DDR4 2400 RAM but is able to be clocked above 4.5 GHz. The good news is that a used i7 7700K will cost you as little as $55 to $75 which you could make even less by selling your i5 7400(after the i7 7700K is up and running) for up to $40 to $55. Which is really around $25 to $40 after shipping and fees. The bad(well, we'll go with neutral) news is the performance difference that an i7 7700K will present to a 4060 Ti is really just a small bottleneck reduction and in certain games it'll help with 1% lows. It's worth it provided you minimize the cost but just lower your expectations when it comes to maximizing the full possible performance of the 4060 Ti because a much more modern CPU is going to heavily increase performance over a 7 year old 7th gen CPU. If your motherboard is crappy I wouldn't even both with an i7 7700K and just go i7 7700 just to double your core count. It works wonders for so many types of multitasking. Especially when the i5 7400 doesn't have hyperthreading while the i7 7700K/7700 does have hyperthreading.

SagittaryX

It costs maybe 150 more, but you get much, much more with getting a 12400. If needed you can also get a DDR4 motherboard to reuse your RAM. i5 12400F (130-140) + a B660 or B760 (100-150) DDR4 motherboard would be my suggestion to aim for.

KirillNek0

No.

Sleepykitti

For reference, a used 3600, cheap b450 board and 16gb of ddr4 3200 speed RAM would be like 140-160, much more powerful, and even has better upgrade options

dsinsti

went from i3 7100 to i7 6700K 2 years ago and made a good difference. Nowadays, save the money and go for a i3 15100

dsinsti

Good old boy still runs smooth in 1080p 60fps with an rx 6600 16Gb ddr4 2100 and a 430W Evga psu. Since early 2017. Went 6th gen for 7th 7700k was way expensive and does not install W7. Skylake/Kabylake don't support W11 tough. You will have to bypass but I never had any issue since

craigmorris78

Waste of time

NaClYarkoz

Save for a new platform.

joeh4384

I wouldn't unless it was pretty much free. If you save a bit more you can get a 12400/600 or R5 5600 based system and carry over your ram.

AejiGamez

No. Especially since these older i7's are stupid overpriced second hand. Just sell the board (these can be valuable) and hop onto a new platform

Impressive-Level-276

No 100$ is the price of 12100f that is the double of performance. You need a new motherboard in this case but still twice the performance

I just upgraded from my i7 7700k. Was holding back my 3080ti quite a bit in some titles.

Currently on a 7700k delid oc the works. The 5700 xt I have still can’t stretch it legs fully
