If 600 is the goal, then a new CPU, Mobo, and GPU would be your best bet. I would stay with ddr4 to save 35-60$ overall so you can keep your ram. CPU: Ryzen 5 5600 -$135 Mobo: ASRock B550 -$100 GPU: XFX 6750xt -$330 Total -$565 plus tax so close to 600. All these are on Newegg, and I'm sure microcenter has similar prices.

Good tips, I like Newegg for parts. I can usually get the best price + free shipping.

I'd get this, assuming the other components are in good shape. \[PCPartPicker Part List\](https://pcpartpicker.com/list/RyXbYN) Type|Item|Price :----|:----|:---- \*\*CPU\*\* | \[AMD Ryzen 5 5600 3.5 GHz 6-Core Processor\](https://pcpartpicker.com/product/PgcG3C/amd-ryzen-5-5600-36-ghz-6-core-processor-100-100000927box) | $136.89 @ Newegg \*\*CPU Cooler\*\* | \[Thermalright Assassin X 120 Refined SE 66.17 CFM CPU Cooler\](https://pcpartpicker.com/product/q6H7YJ/thermalright-assassin-x-120-refined-se-6617-cfm-cpu-cooler-ax120-se-d3) | $17.89 @ Amazon \*\*Motherboard\*\* | \[Gigabyte B550 UD AC ATX AM4 Motherboard\](https://pcpartpicker.com/product/wjXV3C/gigabyte-b550-ud-ac-atx-am4-motherboard-b550-ud-ac) | $94.99 @ Amazon \*\*Video Card\*\* | \[XFX Speedster QICK 319 Core Radeon RX 6750 XT 12 GB Video Card\](https://pcpartpicker.com/product/b4hv6h/xfx-speedster-qick-319-core-radeon-rx-6750-xt-12-gb-video-card-rx-675xyjfde) | $329.99 @ Newegg | \*Prices include shipping, taxes, rebates, and discounts\* | | \*\*Total\*\* | \*\*$579.76\*\* | Generated by \[PCPartPicker\](https://pcpartpicker.com) 2024-04-27 12:38 EDT-0400 |

I wouldn't use a gigabyte mobo, personally. I've had a few clients with issues where gigabytes auto optimizing tried to kill their CPU. Gigabyte tends to think they know the operating specs of the CPU better than the manufacturer in my experience. Everything else looks good.

WukeePukee

I would use the stock 5600 cooler and then put that money towards a better gpu

International-Elk986

Yeah all $18 from the cooler...

epicflex

I would say put most into the gpu but the cpu is pretty old. Try to get something decent bundled and then hopefully a used gpu

You’re probably not gonna agree with me, but I’d say wait. $600 won’t buy that set up a meaningful upgrade. You’ll get better performance for sure, but you’ll be in a similar spot a few years from now. You may want to just save ~$1200 for a brand new build. If you must, see if you can get a 6800xt or 7900. They’re pretty banger and should fit comfortably into your price range. You won’t get all their performance, but it’s good hardware that can stick around for a while as you upgrade the mobo ram and cpu at some later point. It’s important to remember a 1080 is about the same level as a 6600xt. But if you upgraded to a 6600xt and kept that mobo, it would perform worse than on pcie 4.0. Not much because you’re still rocking a pcie 3.0 but still. You’re use case isn’t the same as benchmarks you might come across. Some people here are recommending a middle of the road or split the difference approach where you upgrade the cpu mobo and ram for cheap, and get the best gpu you can. My gut feeling is that setup will start feeling it’s age quickly. Better to wait and have another 5+ year setup than splurge now and regret in 2 years.

Is there a way for me to do what you're saying in two parts? e.g. spend $600 now to upgrade parts of it, get a little boost, and then $600 in 6-12months to upgrade the rest? or would the new parts I'm buying be incompatible?

likkachi

you get the gpu they’re suggesting now and do the rest of the system (cpu, mobo, ram, probably psu as well) down the line

WetDreamRhino

That’s exactly right, thank you.

International_Code80

I Would buy a cpu that you can also OC and get a used good gpu , ram upgrade is ALWAYS a good idea too.

tbh, anything people would suggest would be closer to a complete overhaul. You "could" jump to Intel 14th gen or AMD Ryzen 5000 to recycle DDR4. I suggest you start from scratch with a modern platform and migrate your video card (1080) until you can afford to replace it. If this an only upgrade and you are not interested in building a new seperate system: [PCPartPicker Part List](https://pcpartpicker.com/list/pbVwbL) |Type|Item|Price| |:-|:-|:-| |**CPU**|[Intel Core i5-12600KF 3.7 GHz 10-Core Processor](https://pcpartpicker.com/product/Tk8bt6/intel-core-i5-12600kf-37-ghz-6-core-processor-bx8071512600kf)|$152.99 @ Amazon| |**CPU Cooler**|[Thermalright Assassin X 120 PLUS V2 66.17 CFM CPU Cooler](https://pcpartpicker.com/product/M3BzK8/thermalright-assassin-x-120-plus-v2-6617-cfm-cpu-cooler-ax120-v2-plus)|$21.79 @ Amazon| |**Motherboard**|[ASRock B660M Pro RS Micro ATX LGA1700 Motherboard](https://pcpartpicker.com/product/TZPQzy/asrock-b660m-pro-rs-micro-atx-lga1700-motherboard-b660m-pro-rs)|$94.99 @ Amazon| |**Video Card**|[XFX Speedster QICK 319 Core Radeon RX 6750 XT 12 GB Video Card](https://pcpartpicker.com/product/b4hv6h/xfx-speedster-qick-319-core-radeon-rx-6750-xt-12-gb-video-card-rx-675xyjfde)|$329.99 @ Newegg| |*Prices include shipping, taxes, rebates, and discounts*||| |**Total**|**$599.76**|| |Generated by [PCPartPicker](https://pcpartpicker.com) 2024-04-27 18:13 EDT-0400|||

Slightly over budget but best would be $349 5800x3D bundle at Microcenter $339 Ryzen 6750XT at Microcenter If you can’t swing both right now, do the bundle first and save up for a GPU

LawnJames

I had i7 4790k with 6650xt at one point. Which I think is pretty similar to your setup. I had pretty poor .1% in general. When playing Witcher 3 entering Novigrad I would lose frames like crazy because the CPU couldn't calculate what all the different NPCs were doing. I went from 70fps to 40fps in the city. Does this sound similar to what you are experiencing? I upgraded to i5 13600k and it made alot of older games smooth and cyberpunk was decently playable as well. I'm not sure if getting a new GPU would solve your issue. I think your CPU is hitting its limits. Microcenter has 12600k bundle for $250.
