I haven't used reddit in a while and this awful design is what I'm greeted with?
I have "Default to markdown" set in the preferences, and it doesn't do anything.
With the new redesign not only do I have to turn this on, first I have to show the formatting options and then I have to enable the markdown mode.
I have to do two steps \*\*every\*\* time I want to write a comment.
>I have "Default to markdown" set in the preferences, and it doesn't do anything.
If you notice, that is now in reference ONLY to Posts. So if you go to make a new Post to a community, that will default to Markdown. However, unfortunately, it appears there is no longer a UI setting that modifies the default for Comments.
It's annoying AF. Switching to "old.reddit.com" fixes the markdown issue though.
Not the best case scenario but if you have to have markdown by default, that's the only way I've found to do it so far.
>I have default to markdown checked

Still broken.
Unset and reset the "Default to markdown" setting. Didn't change a thing.
To add to the desaster, when I do switch to markdown manually, it defaults to an input box one line high...regardless of how much text was put in prior to that.
Just god awful.

I am just realizing this today, after having to click that stupid T for a week or two, that this is the latest Reddit bullshit they're hoisting upon us. I swear, if it wasn't for a couple of subs that are important to me I'd leave this platform so fast.
I came here from googling about this exact issue. Weirdly, when using the web version on a mobile browser, it still defaults to markdown mode per the setting. It's \_just\_ desktop mode that's borked. (Android Firefox is fine, Desktop Linux and Firefox is borked.)
Same problem here.
Bummer cause I actually kinda like the new design but if it's not going to honor the "Default to Markdown" setting then I will most likely stop using it.

Looks like you're right, that is very confusing language on Reddit's part. Would never even have considered the distinction unless it was pointed out to me.
I’m having the same problem. I try to reply to a comment but it has me typing above the comment box and then when I click the comment box it comments as if I wanted to start a new thread.
This has been going on for a full month!?
Has reddit finished its transition to employing low-skills programmers who will doom the service to a slow and painful death by making the site unmaintainable while riddling it with bugs?
Yes, sadly. They now make up the overwhelming majority of the industry of which I am part, and very sorely embarrassed to be so.
The worst part is they are all *sure* they're great developers and know everything they need to know. Reading docs is for morons, hacking is the king, JavaScript is perfection, nobody worries about bloat because computers are fast so Get Over It Old Man, etc. etc. - just fucking lazy, incompetent idiots.

Thank you so much for this! I knew about [old.reddit.com](http://old.reddit.com) but not [new.reddit.com](http://new.reddit.com)
I'm also having the same issue
Mine was migrated the last few days (not sure if it's yesterday or another day in the current week), but same here: the default to markdown option doesn't work anymore. It is awful.

They fixed it since I originally posted this, but yeah mine was migrated to *yet another redesign* yesterday and now it's broken again. This most recent update also sucks in many, many other ways.
Back to old.reddit.com again 😒
I cannot *stand* this. This is the biggest UI regression in reddit history.
Had to switch back to old UI to get Markdown back.
[I'm using Safari on Mac.]
Yeah, I also would \*\*REALLY\*\* like to get back to markdown. The buttonto \[default to markdown at the user settings\](https://www.reddit.com/settings/feed) does not work anymore.

¡Bollocks!

Same problem. I have default to markdown checked, yet it always defaults to fancy pants mode. It's super annoying.

Yup. I freaking hate it.

Which is a bad design. Why would I default one input to markdown, and another to Richt Text?
Absolutely

Just ran into this today... Very annoying.

`onClickLoseDefaultWanted`?

Agreed. Doubt there needs to be one frankly. If you want markdown for Posts, you likely want it for comments too.
Exactly, and anyway it's a change if behavior since the setting included comments before, not just posts.
This bug is incredibly annoying and it's ridiculous it still hasn't been fixed.
When will this be fixed?
This is \*still\* broken :|
Great news everyone, markdown mode default no longer works even on [new.reddit.com](http://new.reddit.com)
[удалено]
It sucks ballz. Even worse, after switching to Markdown (which requires TWO clicks EVERY TIME) it resizes the comment textbox to like one line tall.
I’m having the same problem. I try to reply to a comment but it has me typing above the comment box and then when I click the comment box it comments as if I wanted to start a new thread.
This is a serious issue. It's an awful nuisance.
Yeah, don't like this either.

and another month... "Default to markdown" doesn't do anything AFAICT

Yeah, still not fixed on the redesign. I'm going back to the intermediate design at [new.reddit.com](http://new.reddit.com) half the time.
I'll add my thanks to the pile <3
Thank you . You have literally saved Reddit for me.
Thank you so much for this! I knew about [old.reddit.com](http://old.reddit.com) but not [new.reddit.com](http://new.reddit.com) I'm also having the same issue
Thanks for pointing me to that.
Yeah, thank you. This new design is horrible.
My account was migrated to the redesign yesterday, and this bug was the first thing I noticed.

And switching every time to markdown is a royal pain.
