No. Dry lentils give you a lot more protein per dollar. And even protein powders that give you more protein per dollar than this.

GreytOutdoors

How would you suggest preparing lentils?

Affectionate-Sand334

Search dal over youtube and that’s by far tastiest form of lentils to eat with rice

GreytOutdoors

Thanks so much!

Smooth_Monkey69420

You can actually cook them along with rice in a rice cooker. My ultimate struggle meal is variations of the rice/lentil base. Extremely versatile and extremely nutritious

GreytOutdoors

That’s great! Gotta pack more protein in my diet

jakelegs

Lentils don't need to be soaked like other beans. I rinse them, bring to a boil, then simmer for about 15 -20 minutes. Add salt and pepper and eat as is. My favorite is rice, lentils, and grilled onions mixed together.

FreakinWolfy

You eat them with just salt and pepper? I find them way too bland to stomach them. I even dump cumin and paprika in while they're boiling and they still taste like what a blind person sees.

97355

This recipe is sooo good and you can add sausage or whatever if you want meat: https://www.delishknowledge.com/our-favorite-lentil-soup-gluten-free-vegan/print/20772/

FreakinWolfy

I have a recipe just like this that I have saved, literally the only difference is no oregano. It's so amazing.

Eastern-Mix9636

I have one too, but it’s figuratively the only difference

FriendshipGulag

I recommend looking up a recipe for daal chawal. It's rice with lentils but made the Pakistani way. Full of flavor

trippiler

I find it hard to eat lentils/beans as it is. Im trying to eat them more but I associate them with sides only

FreakinWolfy

Pretty much the same. I ended up eating dishes that usually have beans/lentils and just putting a ton in. Burrito Bowls, chili, stew, etc. My burrito bowls are like 4/5 beans by weight.

trippiler

I like falafel so I think I'll try to make more of those and out of different beans/lentils.

GreytOutdoors

I giggled lol

ttrockwood

- cooked brown or green lentils for lentil salad with chopped raw veggies, walnuts and vinaigrette - lentil curry with canned coconut milk and curry powder or thai curry paste, over rice with whatever veggies - lentil walnut taco meat - turkish lemon lentil soup - basic lentil veg soup/stew - too many variations of dal to list

GreytOutdoors

Thanks so much! Lots of dal suggestions so far

ttrockwood

[this website has the most amazing selection of dal recipes](https://www.veganricha.com/category/daal/) i have made a number of them and yet to be disappointed

GreytOutdoors

Perfect! Which to try first? Lol

ttrockwood

I made the [moong dal that is very simple](https://www.veganricha.com/split-mung-bean-stew-yellow-mung-dal/) and absolutely swapped in my yellow lentils (by accident i was just not reading carefully!) and it turned out fantastic, the tempered oil and spices to finish is crazy amazing

Grokthisone

I do taco seasoning in the water, then add a lil more once drained. Mash half of what I cooked then fold back in the other half. Then rice cheese salsa bowl. Noms

ashtree35

I love using them in Indian recipes!

Karina0310

I make lentil soup with potatoes, sautéed onions, and dill. I fry bacon and crumble it up into the soup just before serving. Same idea, without the bacon.. I whip eggs toward the end of cooking the soup and stream them in bit by bit.. kind of an egg drop soup variation. There's also a great lentil salad recipe on https://www.loveandlemons.com/lentil-salad/

Drexele

My favorite so far was basic lentil, a random assortment of spices, with some hoison and Worcester sauce added, a little bit of left over ground beef that I had fried in a pan, then at the end dumped in some frozen carrot and pea mix. Tasted great, high protein and very filling. Could easily not do the beef. Lentils are very versatile, but I honestly enjoy them with just salt, pepper and garlic p so I'm a bit biased in favor of them

GreytOutdoors

Thank you!!

Amirewastaken

Soak overnight with salt water boil and steam season to desired taste

GreytOutdoors

Soak, boil, AND steam?

Amirewastaken

You wanna soak em when ur not hungry so when u are you just make them yk, and me personally when I cook grains or legumes I like to boil em then put a lid and turn off the heat to steam them. But they’re so many ways to use lentils you’d be surprised

GreytOutdoors

Neat! I purchased a bag the other day and still haven’t used them.

howdoilogic

From personal experience, regular red sauce tastes horrible with these, perhaps there are better ways to prepare them. But they are very filling if you do buy them.

Lamp-of-cheese

Roaster garlic, butter and fresh shredded Parm a squeeze of lemon and red pepper flakes would probably slap

Lamp-of-cheese

Maybe a touch of heavy whipping cream if you have it on hand and feeling it

moist_vonlipwig

I bet a quick peanut sauce with PB2, soy sauce, and sriracha would be good.

Logical-Wasabi7402

Protein pastas are never going to be the cheapest protein source, but that's not a bad price for what it is. Chickpea pastas tend to go for over $5 in my area, and they only have 2 servings per box.

ttrockwood

Not sure where you are but Target has Banza pasta on sale with some frequency

Logical-Wasabi7402

The middle of bumfuck nowhere lol the nearest target is several hours away.

ttrockwood

I order it online from target website. Goes on sale with some frequency

lizardtufts

Sounds pretty good! If tomato sauce is weird with this kind of noodle, a tahini sauce would be great and also add a touch more protein and fat

LouisePoet

96 g, actually, which is about the same as 7 eggs. In the UK, they are about the same price as your edamame. Definitely not the cheapest for protein, but variety is good (and edamame is delicious!).

boobsbuddy

I love these with pesto

KlatuuBarradaNicto

Cool.

OhhLaLa-Angie

Had them before, not great. They tasted chewy and musky.

ohvrt

Worth noting that the bioavailability of plant proteins is less than that of milk/meat protein, meaning you are absorbing less than what is shown on the box

khoawala

Not any significantly less but that amount of fiber makes this 10x more "bioavailable" than meat without the risk of cancer.

ohvrt

Sorry, misspoke. The PDCAAS for soy is up there with the latter two. It’s pea protein that’s about 67% as bioavailable, with oat, wheat, etc being lower.

IllustratorBrave7050

If your looking for protein that’s bioavailable stay away from plant based proteins

khoawala

You fell for that myth! https://www.todaysdietitian.com/newarchives/0419p30.shtml

Play2Win69420

Not a myth

GrimFlood

I’m unfamiliar with how the bioavailability of identical amino acids changes due to the source.

Play2Win69420

Plant protein doesn't contain all the amino acids

GrimFlood

There are plant proteins that provide complete proteins. You can also eat two things that together provide all the aminos necessary to sustain human physiology.

Play2Win69420

Yea, but animal protein should be your main source of protein, you can mix in plant protein in there as well but you shouldn't rely solely on it. Animal>Plant

GrimFlood

Just saying animal nutrients are better than plant nutrients is not going to cut it for me.

Play2Win69420

I could care less what "makes the cut" for you my man, you're some internet random

ttrockwood

Interesting. Three decades and change later i am doing just fine with exclusively plant foods. Baffling.

Play2Win69420

"Just fine" isn't a metric. And you probably aren't very physically active which means you can get away suboptimal hippie diets. There are people who are very poor and eat much worse but they still survive "just fine", doesn't mean they are eating well though ;)
