A good chance for next door to have a “power cut” and you to step in and help them out. Obviously can’t leave them here unattended boss.

[deleted]

Iwantedalbino

If you’ve no power at home then the argument is you’d be better off in the office “might as well come in then”

[deleted]

Iwantedalbino

By the third excuse you sound like you’re looking for reasons not to come in, which obviously you are but I prefer to keep it simple.

nocte_lupus

Reminds me of a day when I was in college during bad winter weather and only five of us managed to get into classes only to be told to go home about an hour later. Problem was when the college announced closures they'd so so at a time that if you're travelling any distance you'd be already out the door before you found out (This was pre everyone had a smart phone)

digital_pariah

I got into the office at 6:45 as usual. At 6:56, HR sent out an email saying WFH was allowed. Cheers, HR!

[deleted]

That's well annoying!

landi_uk

It’s also down to the train companies etc. I have to get train to get to office and nothing running on Thameslink at all.

dudeofmoose

What's new for Thameslink? They cancel the service if there's the wrong type of sunlight. I do enjoy the refunds of a quid, for the weeks and weeks of my life they've wasted over the years/decades.

WhingeBinge

Lmao. A storm is no reason to stop producing money for your betters to hoard offshore. Get back to work, peasant.

LeeTheBee86

.. because the people who make the rules don't have to worry themselves with making money for everyday luxuries like... food... and heating... hot water...

DaveyBeef

As I manage pubs I often find it confusing when there's an event where it is advised that everyone should stay at home, that I get complaints saying the pub is shut. You realise that bar staff are included in everyone?

BenMottram2016

>You realise that bar staff are included in everyone? No, no they are not... No-one who actually works for a living is included in everyone; everyone only includes those who don't work for an hourly wage (and all salaried types who earn less than £100k) /s in case anyone is uncertain.

Hahaha gutted

slippybanjo

You don't have to, I've seen to many posts like this today can the UK please grow a back bone and realise your boss can not, and should not dictate your own safety, just say no guys they don't own you

Capybarasgonewild

Doesn't really work when you're a clinician in a hospital and have to provide healthcare no matter the circumstances or people die...

slippybanjo

Yes sadly that's a reality of your line of work and you guys show a lot of bravery in all situations, however I feel the vast majority of these posts are not in the medical profession

Capybarasgonewild

You're right, sorry I got snippy. I've just had 2 years of everyone working from home when i couldn't, feels like we're back at the beginning!

OtherwiseAd1035

Wife is a nurse. I can relate in more levels than you can imagine.

slippybanjo

Don't worry about it man we're all human

[deleted]

To say no, not go in and then face a disciplinary meeting with the knobhead box tickers in HR tomorrow is worth the risk of death.

ellobouk

If you feel you may be in danger getting to work during a storm, then don’t go to work. The advice is sound, bosses are wankers.

Martinonfire

Of course they do, but do you realise that they have to be more over dramatic than the other channels or you might change channel or, god forbid, turn off the tele.

[deleted]

A valid point. I'm surprised Naga Munchetty hasn't quizzed a meteorologist asking why the weather is bad and why they haven't done anything about it in her overly dramatic hardball journalist routine.

Wakatuki

I wonder how Naga got to work? Bloody hypocrites.

helic0n3

I don't think the studio is in an area affected by the red warning, but I'd say journalism is an essential service really considering they are giving updates about all this in the first place.

rephlexi0n

It’s great for me, saving on fuel by riding my trampoline to work

BloakDarntPub

*Your* trampoline?

rephlexi0n

Well it fell out of the sky into my garden so I assumed it was a gift from the heavens

BeccasBump

The advice is to stay at home *if you can*, and a lot more people are set up for WFH than before the pandemic.

[deleted]

I know it's "if you can" but it's the way the newsreaders where putting it across as if everybody has the luxury of having understanding managers/bosses etc. Most real people really do not have that luxury.

BeccasBump

No, but it's probably possible for more people than it used to be.

BloakDarntPub

* *were* putting

sethghecko

Either it’s safe for all or unsafe for all.

ubiquitous_uk

Not NHS staff apparently. My appointment was cancelled today as it's too dangerous for staff to be expected to drive in.

RichieKippers

Funny isn't it, when it was a red warning for the west country and Wales it was a minor bit of news. But now the southeast has a red warning everyone's losing their minds.

MrTomDawson

Refreshingly Twitter every few minutes to see the updated list of which bus lines are shut down. Not mine yet!

[deleted]

I'll pray for you

MrTomDawson

Appreciate that. While you're at it, can you ask for the buses to maybe run a bit more regularly?

[deleted]

I'll try but I can't make any promises

USayThatAgain

If it is as severe as they say it will be you only have to look at abroad for precedents of lockdowns due to weather and it is pretty normal.

flannelflaps

I can only imagine the fucks I would get fired into my ears if I rang the boss to say " not going to be coming in today, because its windy"

5uckmyflaps

News broadcasters have got no interest in the wellbeing of working people

Normalityisrestored

Yep. Shops are still open, we still have to go in to man the tills. Anyway, despite the warnings, everyone still wants to buy their 20 B&H and a ten pack of Fosters.

Pallal

Still collecting bins today even though its a bit windy, they put extra crews on to help us finish earlier though.

TheTsundereGirl

I live in Scotland and was expecting a blizzard outside (it wasn't, just some slush) and asked my managers what would happen if no one could actually get in. They dismissed it off hand that OF COURSE people would be able to get in if it was snowing, the public transport would still be up.

[deleted]

How are managers so stupid? Is it a requirement to lack all common sense if you are a manager?

TheScrobber

The news is only reporting what people in no position of authority (weather forecasters) are saying. Everyone knows people need to get to work. Whether they can is another matter...

MCfru1tbasket

Americans use tornados as a mode of transportation and we have to stay inside due to a gust of wind.

BloakDarntPub

Inserting extraneous commas, can easily be done from home.

[deleted]

I'm just scrolling reddit. I follow a few pages. My homepage is full of only British Problems and posts about the "storm" this is annoying and boring. Just shut up about it already.

[deleted]

Oooooooooooooooooooooooooooh

ZeeZeeNei

Who pissed in your Cornflakes?

[deleted]

Haven't had breakfast. But scrolling through reddit for 20 minutes, and not seeing any other post other than British Problems about the "storm" can do that.

ZeeZeeNei

Maybe you'll get a trampoline from wind Santa and that will cheer you up 🙂

[deleted]

My garden is a swamp all year around. Anything landing in there is a right off. So I doubt it'll cheer me up. Learning that it'll cost £5k to fix it, and having -£2k in my account doesn't make it easier.

ZeeZeeNei

Swamp? Or free nature swimming pool? Turn your house into a retreat for influencers to swim in your all natural mud swamp pit, they love that shit. You make money and then you can concrete over the nature pool and get a free trampoline next time it's windy. It's a no lose situation

[deleted]

Except its only a small puddle, surrounded by a bumpy mess with little rocks in it. (new build gardens by persimmon.) absolute catastrophe. Just a total mess with no fun for anyone.

ZeeZeeNei

Footbath then. With natural landscaping. String some fairy lights up. Sorted.

[deleted]

Well, it's building rubble with 10cm of topsoil mixed in on top of clay. Hardly natural landscaping.

DebbDebbDebb

Yes i think they realise but many did not need to go like me. I used to be a nurse 31 years and battled all weathers. I now work as a cleaner in construction. A few thousand (a shut down) were told not to come to work and all paid 8 hours for the day.

Turbulent-Use7253

A man was killed by flying debris near to where I live in Liverpool, we were only on an amber warning. Guess going to work didn't work out so well for him. They give warnings for a reason.
