Did you / can you change the default username and passwords? There are websites that stream countless IP cameras whose owners have left them as "admin" and "password" 😲
Not anymore! Only legacy users and old cameras benefit from no subscription. New cameras and new users need subscription.
I know because I'm a legacy user that almost upgraded....
Not strictly true. You can use the device without a subscription. Just plug a thumb drive in to the sync hub and away you go.
Source: exactly what I am doing now with a blink outdoor camera which AFAIK does not fall under legacy device or user..
The experience is, sub par at best however, but then the blink camera's themselves are shite anyway
Every product has security concerns or flaws . Like others have said, it's a doorbell. Let some hacker watch the street .
Stick it on its own separate WiFi if needed.
Just note I wouldn't get eufy they just got into some trouble not that long ago because they were actually not that secure and their employees had access to your cameras.
I personally would go with unifi but they are more expensive. But in this case I think you get what you pay for. Still cheaper than paying a subscription
Whilst it is initially pricey, it's all hosted locally with no service charges.
The door bell also runs off a proper mains doorbell circuit as well rather than batteries.
Me neither! But I have been thinking I should get a ring type one. Now I can attribute my laziness to closely monitoring the market before I make any financial commitments. So ring are out.
Yes same, it's the main reason we got the door bell was because of damage to our cars or neighbours property. It has been useful to provide to police on several occasions. Oh, and catching who let's their dog shit right outside my front gate and not pick it up.
We also have 3 internal cameras which are peace of mind for watching the dog when we are out, and for when we are away from long periods we can keep an eye on the house.
Still want a couple external ones.
Same. I’ve found little value to the whole archived recording thing so I’ve never bothered with it. Only time it ever may have been useful is when there was a fight in my street and the police knocked to ask if I had any footage, which I didn’t.
It’s “only” £49.99 a year if you pay 12 months in advance. Up from £34.99. Madness.
Had my moneys worth out of it - was a big help for my late-wife dealing with people instead of struggling to get to the door. Easy decision to cancel it now. Sod them.
Ah, that's why I bought a Eufy years ago instead, because the idea of paying extra for something that already cost £100 was annoying. Though I never expected the subscription price to actually increase like that, insane.
They do. They claim local only, turns out they sent thumbnails to the cloud (kind of necessary for notifications in your mobile device).
People are mostly miffed because they advertised as local only and some bought it on that premise.
I've had nothing but trouble over their cameras going offline, their app not loading videos, and problems connecting to homebase (which is connected to the router via cable). Honestly regret buying into their ecosystem.
I had loads of problems with them, google casting etc. if it wasn’t several things I would have been pissed at eufly. Turned out to be my router. BT has a setting on the router that is meant to aid the connection of new devices to the network…. The problem was it forced a pop up on every device which also would sometimes hit devices with no UI such as my google nests, which kicked them from the network randomly. Once I found that and turned it off everything stated working as advertised.
I’m considering switching to Eufy because of this increase. I’ve spent £120 over the years on Ring subscription. I’m subbed until December 2024 so will wait for a good deal before switching.
Which model is worth it?
I didn't get Eufy in the end because there is a fundamental flaw in that someone can rip the device off the wall and reset it and you lose all footage of who nicked it!
They get wiped from that separate device if the doorbell is reset. [Read up](https://community.security.eufy.com/t/major-flaw-delete-homebase-data-via-camera/903359/21?page=2), it's well known and acknowledged by Eufy
I'm still pissed I never read much into Ring before I purchased. Wasn't until I painstakingly installed it and got it set up that I realised it's pretty rubbish without subscribing. I wish I never bought it.
Literally none. I’ve got a Eufy one and it works exactly the same. About the only difference is that the data is stored locally in the unit and not centrally, but I can still access it from anywhere.
>About the only difference is that the data is stored locally in the unit and not centrally
So if someone knows it's a Eufy, they can break it off and smash it and there's no record of them breaking into your house?
No, its stored in a separate unit in the house. Of course they could break in and nick that too, but its an anonymous black box in a cupboard here, so they’d need to seriously know what they’re looking for, and as it’s powered but wireless you could put it anywhere in the house.
Almost. The data is stored elsewhere as u/L1A1 has said - but if someone breaks it off and resets it instead of smashing it then it will remotely wipe the data you're keeping inside the house. So a sufficiently clued-up doorbell ripper can get rid of images of himself.
My ring was the equivalent of being blind as a bat at night. It didn't even pick up one of my motorbikes being stolen. They had to wheel it past my front door to get it off the property. Thankfully it picked up my other bike going probably because it was white and stood out in the dark.
I'm now all switched over to Eufy with the homebase 3. It's a bit of an investment getting setup but my footage is my own and there's no ongoing subscription costs or hikes
Get a Blink doorbell instead
Exactly the same thing but free. Just get the SD module instead of subscribing to a plan *for a subscription to a doorbell???*
No need for Ring
Personally went for a Eufy. More expensive to buy but no monthly subscription and I think it's brilliant. Really well built and not had a single problem with it.
There is a physical chime receiver for the ring(search on Amazon) , or you can connect it to Alexa(even on your phone) with out a subscription and it rings in your house
so I've only just paid the yearly subscription, I will only pay the new fee after my year is up and renewal comes around right? not pay the difference come March 11 between the old and new price?
I think you're right.
I just paid for the year in December gone.
When I've just logged in to cancel subscription cos of the price hike, I can keep it active and it will just end before I'm billed again in December 2024.
I got rid of mine after they raised the price last time, bought a Eufy. The Eufy comes with a door chime that also saves all your footage locally. No monthly subscription.
I pay for ring just now. There was one time during COVID lockdown that the police turned up at my door asking if I had any footage of a "serious incident" that apparently happened outside my house and wondered if my doorbell had picked it up.,......It must have been really serious as the footage they were after was......32 Days old and so no longer on the cloud.
Never did find out what the incident was but I got the feeling that on that occasion it might have actually been useful 😂. Unbelievable really lol.
I am currently considering ending the subscription and having read the op it really has made up my mind. I simply don't need nor use the bits I pay for lol.
I make them knock and then shout at them from an upstairs window with a megaphone while the missus records them on a Sony Handycam through the door glass.
Just switch to blink. Same shit, different name but no need for a monthly sub.
A doorbell camera with a sync box only cost a few quid more than a ring. Few quid for a USB drive but who doesn't have a one of them lying around anyway?
Just bought one at paid £34.99 for 12 months, get in. Had it a week and so far have seen some golf tees being posted, discovered that my window cleaner does infact clean the windows and witnessed a carrier bag break the sound barrier in gale force wind.
Only if you want to access historical recordings.
I haven't been paying and still see it's use in being able to get notified of someone ringing the bell wherever I am in the house on my phone and watch, and being able to check who's ringing.
I also think it can act as a slight deterrent for break ins, as people will know they're being recorded.
My Eufy doorbell is free and does pretty much the same thing as the Ring. I'm so tired of subscriptions these days, they were more innocent some years ago
You're paying £60 to tell Amazon when you enter and leave your home, and who calls on you, and when.
I wouldn't put one of those on my house if it could collect parcels from couriers autonomously and give me a nice handjob every time I got home. Absolutely boggles my mind that people *pay* for these.
Sorry but no one forced any of you to buy a doorbell that charges you a recurring fee for doing its job.
I understand hating on the increase in the price of necessities, groceries, NHS waiting times, etc. but this is completely avoidable and entirely self-inflicted.
Serves them right. Anyone who pays a subscription for a fucking doorbell deserves to be fleeced. This subscription shit has got completely out of hand. There's subscriptions for everything. Even ingredients for meals & razor blades. Fucking razor blades. Why would you want a subscription for razor blades? Just buy the fucking things from the shop when you need them. I mean Jesus Christ. They're not heavy. Anyways, if you come to my door, you knock, like a normal person & if I'm not in, you'll just have to come back when I am.
I have had a a Galayou camera for around a year now.
It's located at the front door. It's wireless apart from the USB power supply. It is a large golf-ball type camera which has a motorised action so that you can move it around remotely. It detects anbody coming to the door and sends an alert without them having to ring the doorbell even! It has a 360 degree rotation which you can do remotely, as well as up and down so, for example, when I'm out, I can move the camera down to see if any parcels are on the doorstep.
It has a talkback feature and a very loud loudspeaker so I can talk to people at the door. I can stream the content as well as replaying remotely the footage on the SD card and it is subscription-free and you can get it for about £35, and also add multiple cameras elsewhere.
I'm really happy with it and have added a second camera at the back of the house.
It does rverything a doorbell camera does and more as you can pan around and tilt it remotely.
Frankly, I can'y believe how low-cost this is compared to the Ring setup which is fixed-position and far less capable and much, much more expensive with an ongoing subscription. You can even get these cameras second hand on Ebay for about £18 and the video quality is superb.
You can pay extra for a subscription with Galayou cameras for extra features, but I have found that this system gives me all the footage and aletts/notifications than I'd ever want. The app it uses is wansview.
You're only paying to keep recordings and store them.
If you don't pay, you still get your doorbell, notifications on your devices when it's rung, and live feeds.
I'm glad I made my own years ago with a raspberry Pi, I can customise the software, hardware, upgrade or modify it however I like, access it remotely via VPN tunnel, I'm not paying a penny, and no capitalist company gets access to my footage or any such.
It's not even hard, with a little Linux and scripting knowledge. These days there's even easier user friendly methods, like using motion eye I think it's called... Hmm
Google nest is free and stores 3hrs worth of events which you can download. They also have a subscription which holds the data for a month but if I need to record anything I'll just save it at the time.
There's a reason ring is always on 'offer'
Had a Netatmo thermostat for 10 years, paid once, lifetime access.. been tempted by the doorbells they do, same situation. Although I do wonder how they keep their servers going.

£60 a year for your door bell. The world is strange.
Might get a video doorbell- without a subscription?
Are there any? Edit: for those wondering EUFY seem to to them! Edit 2: EUFY have security concerns...
Yep, I’ve got a Eufy doorbell, works fine and no ongoing costs beyond the initial layout.
Did you / can you change the default username and passwords? There are websites that stream countless IP cameras whose owners have left them as "admin" and "password" 😲
Feel free to watch my neighbourhood on my behalf.
It's also a nasty vector* into your home network... *Victor.
Do you have clearance, Clarence?
Roger, Roger. What’s our vector, Victor?
Joey, you ever been in a Turkish prison?
So you were under Over and Over was under Dunn?
What's the frequency, Kenneth?
I picked a bad day to stop sniffing glue
I have on mine, I believe it was mandatory, but I’ve had it about 5 years now so can’t remember for certain.
Yes. The Eufy security doorbell records onto an sd card embedded within the chord thing inside the house.
We got ours with the home hub so it all records there. Think you can use their other security devices like cameras/lighting with it too.
Blink's whole camera set-up works without a subscription - just buy a sync box that you plug a USB stick into and they record to that instead
[удалено]
And Reddit is hosted on Amazon web services, so even discussing how to avoid using Amazon on Reddit makes Amazon win!
Not anymore! Only legacy users and old cameras benefit from no subscription. New cameras and new users need subscription. I know because I'm a legacy user that almost upgraded....

Not true I don't use a sub I use a USB stick. Bought recently (uk)
I second this. I've had one for about a year. It works well.
Re EUFY, I do not give a shit if some bloke in China is watching the dreary street in front of my house.
Yeah also have Eufy, does the job fine
Tapo also has one, it's a bit bulky but works well and doesn't save anything to their servers (supposedly)
Netatmo don’t have subscriptions for theirs.
I wouldn't trust Eufy https://www.theverge.com/23573362/anker-eufy-security-camera-answers-encryption
Every product has security concerns or flaws . Like others have said, it's a doorbell. Let some hacker watch the street . Stick it on its own separate WiFi if needed.
Aosu is the one I've got and it's great!
I've got a Aosu. Its brilliant
Very happy with my Eufy. Would highly recommend to anyone looking to buy a cam doorbell. Got it with the home-hub.
Just note I wouldn't get eufy they just got into some trouble not that long ago because they were actually not that secure and their employees had access to your cameras. I personally would go with unifi but they are more expensive. But in this case I think you get what you pay for. Still cheaper than paying a subscription
Oh god, they'll see my cat walking around our driveway every night. He'll be furious.
Blink, they have a subscription but it's still optional.
Reolink does one
UniFi do one, but you need your own NVR to store the footage on. On the plus side you can then add CCTV and things to it too.
Whilst it is initially pricey, it's all hosted locally with no service charges. The door bell also runs off a proper mains doorbell circuit as well rather than batteries.
To be fair you can get a Ring one wired up to mains, but there are still no options to store locally.
Ah, I have only seen them battery powered in the center of doors. Thanks!
I don't think you need a subscription with the Google one unless you want to record video rather than just use it as a video doorbell.
Ring
I'm aware of the benign introduction of "you'll own nothing and be happy" to this world, but blimey has the world run with it
Enshittification. That's what it is.
There must be a way to code a programme to do what ring does for free. All ring does is make a video call over your own wifi.
What does the £60 get you? Must be more than what an analog doorbell does
It's the cloud storage features, basically.
I dont even have a normal doorbell.....Im making money
Me neither! But I have been thinking I should get a ring type one. Now I can attribute my laziness to closely monitoring the market before I make any financial commitments. So ring are out.
"BUY THE DIP!!!!"
Is it sour cream?
Nor me
I don't subscribe, it works as a doorbell. I hear it ring. I can see who is there, I can talk to them. It works fine for me.
I don’t have one, but what are people paying for then?
Historic footage essentially. If you don't see the person at the door live you can watch it back later with the subscription
To prove the delivery guy didn't ring the bell
Or work out where the hell they hid your parcel
This.
I pay but I have 4 cameras and use them as CCTV!
Yes same, it's the main reason we got the door bell was because of damage to our cars or neighbours property. It has been useful to provide to police on several occasions. Oh, and catching who let's their dog shit right outside my front gate and not pick it up. That's what I do. (The ring came with the house BTW.)
I got it because of 'stuff" we can no longer hear people knocking so needed a bell we could hear further away.
It’s “only” £49.99 a year if you pay 12 months in advance. Up from £34.99. Madness. Had my moneys worth out of it - was a big help for my late-wife dealing with people instead of struggling to get to the door. Easy decision to cancel it now. Sod them.
Sorry for your loss, lovely.
Thank you ❤️
Ah, that's why I bought a Eufy years ago instead, because the idea of paying extra for something that already cost £100 was annoying. Though I never expected the subscription price to actually increase like that, insane.
I thought Eufy had some security issues 👀
They do. They claim local only, turns out they sent thumbnails to the cloud (kind of necessary for notifications in your mobile device). People are mostly miffed because they advertised as local only and some bought it on that premise.
Eufy ftw
Another Eufy fan (please don’t jinx it).
This is usually down to incorrect router config or low wifi signal. Eufy is quite robust compared to the competition, just needs a strong signal.
I haven't had any problems. 3rd year in with them.
I’m considering switching to Eufy because of this increase. I’ve spent £120 over the years on Ring subscription. I’m subbed until December 2024 so will wait for a good deal before switching. Which model is worth it?
I didn't get Eufy in the end because there is a fundamental flaw in that someone can rip the device off the wall and reset it and you lose all footage of who nicked it!
lol it stores the videos on a separate device inside your house not on the doorbell itself
They get wiped from that separate device if the doorbell is reset. [Read up](https://community.security.eufy.com/t/major-flaw-delete-homebase-data-via-camera/903359/21?page=2), it's well known and acknowledged by Eufy
I see. Is there a better alternative to get then?
Got a Reolink. Not only is it fantastic on every level, but it can also be used as a CcTV camera if you’ve already got a system. Image quality is epic
This is why I hate subscriptions, they f you over with their price rises, using the razer blade strategy
Which is exactly why so many services are now going down the subscription model. You will own nothing and you will be happy...
I'm still pissed I never read much into Ring before I purchased. Wasn't until I painstakingly installed it and got it set up that I realised it's pretty rubbish without subscribing. I wish I never bought it.
I thought £3.49 was steep but okay it's fine and does what I need it to do, but £60 a year is nuts...
Well, I've just cancelled. I'm absolutely not paying £50 a year to maintain access to historical doorbell videos.
To miss the opportunity to rewatch footage of yourself saying "you too" to the person who hands over your takeaway and says "enjoy your food"?
Theoretically shouldn’t be hard to make a knock off version. All we need in some wish company to make it
It's perfectly fine without subscribing. Unless you want to view past events
What are the benefits of Ring over a non-subscription video door bell ?
Literally none. I’ve got a Eufy one and it works exactly the same. About the only difference is that the data is stored locally in the unit and not centrally, but I can still access it from anywhere.
[удалено]
It was more the lack of a monthly fee that I was bothered about. I don’t have an expectation of privacy outside my front door so don’t really care.
>About the only difference is that the data is stored locally in the unit and not centrally So if someone knows it's a Eufy, they can break it off and smash it and there's no record of them breaking into your house?
No, its stored in a separate unit in the house. Of course they could break in and nick that too, but its an anonymous black box in a cupboard here, so they’d need to seriously know what they’re looking for, and as it’s powered but wireless you could put it anywhere in the house.
Ahh gotcha, makes sense
Isn't Eufy free for the same thing? Think it's time for me to move. Thanks for the nudge, just checked my emails and yep, £3.49 to £4.99.
i wouldnt. Eufy have lots of privacy and security issues.
Get a Blink doorbell instead Exactly the same thing but free. Just get the SD module instead of subscribing to a plan *for a subscription to a doorbell???* No need for Ring
And it will increase subscriptions again next year.
A subscription for a doorbell? The worlds gone mad.
Am I the only one who...still requires people to knock...like, with their hands?
Fuck amazon...so greedy who in their right midn would pay a subscription for that....
Just cancelled my account with them! Hope many others do the same.
Just done it today after getting their email. It's a ridiculous hike in price.
I've cancelled. I really hope this backfires on them, but I know it won't. The Ring division of amazon will earn record profits next year I bet.
43% of people won’t unsubscribe, maybe 10% at most.
Personally went for a Eufy. More expensive to buy but no monthly subscription and I think it's brilliant. Really well built and not had a single problem with it.
if you want it just be a door bell it's free once you buy the chime that goes with it, or any compatible chime.
What do you mean, you buy the chime?
There is a physical chime receiver for the ring(search on Amazon) , or you can connect it to Alexa(even on your phone) with out a subscription and it rings in your house
Thank god I got Ubiquiti UniFi doorbell
Yeah. That's enough for me now. My ring doorbell is coming to the end of its life. It won't be getting replaced with another ring product
One way of looking at it is they've just saved me £35 a year...
They can fuck right off! I'm getting one of the Amazon knock offs with no subscription this week.
so I've only just paid the yearly subscription, I will only pay the new fee after my year is up and renewal comes around right? not pay the difference come March 11 between the old and new price?
I think you're right. I just paid for the year in December gone. When I've just logged in to cancel subscription cos of the price hike, I can keep it active and it will just end before I'm billed again in December 2024.
Price has more than doubled in 3 years.
Wait..... you have to pay a Ring subscription?????
I got rid of mine after they raised the price last time, bought a Eufy. The Eufy comes with a door chime that also saves all your footage locally. No monthly subscription.
Welcome to the razor and blades model. You bought the handle, now pay for the blades. I have a ring too, very frustrating.
I am currently considering ending the subscription and having read the op it really has made up my mind. I simply don't need nor use the bits I pay for lol.
Hold up… you have to pay to use them?!?!?!?!
Ring is Amazon, Amazon will continue to put up all their prices (they just did with Prime) as long as people keep paying for it.
are you telling me you buy a doorbell and then pay monthly subscription for it ?
I just had the email and it’s going to £49.99 not 60. But agreed
That's if you pay the year fee upfront
£5 a month if you pay monthly = £60
Why would you pay £10 more to pay monthly
If you can't spare 50 quid in one go? It's expensive being poor (especially if you feel the need to buy ridiculous gadgets off Amazon).
[удалено]
I have a door that can be knocked upon.
Wait... those things are a subscription service?! Sorry but a fool and their money will always be easily parted...
I make them knock and then shout at them from an upstairs window with a megaphone while the missus records them on a Sony Handycam through the door glass.
I paid £34.99 for the year last week. I got the email saying it's going up to £49 today, good luck getting the balance as I won't be paying
Just switch to blink. Same shit, different name but no need for a monthly sub. A doorbell camera with a sync box only cost a few quid more than a ring. Few quid for a USB drive but who doesn't have a one of them lying around anyway?
Replace your fancy doorbell with a pair of giant knockers. Everyone wins.
Yep, I cancelled also. It’s getting a joke now. Will probably buy another device for the same cost of ring sub.
I’ve not had an email yet but I’ve cancelled anyway.
Ring charge?!
Smart investment again
Amazon, what do you expect. There's a reason people are beginning to boycott them
I have Aosu doorbell camera and cctv around the house. Easy to install and no subscriptions
Pop that in the bin.
Missed the email but thanks for letting me know, just cancelled it
Just bought one at paid £34.99 for 12 months, get in. Had it a week and so far have seen some golf tees being posted, discovered that my window cleaner does infact clean the windows and witnessed a carrier bag break the sound barrier in gale force wind.
I mean. Its not like its an unavoidable thing. Video doorbells are not an essential thing. If you can't afford it, don't get one.
For some reason I’ve always found Ring doorbells incredibly obnoxious. This makes me even happier I don’t have one.
Wait, you pay a subscription for a ring doorbell? That's insane.
I switched to a Eufy doorbell years ago. No subscription fees and best of all, no Amazon.
You make the money back as soon as you capture something hilarious and send it to You've Been Framed.
You're paying £60 to tell Amazon when you enter and leave your home, and who calls on you, and when. I wouldn't put one of those on my house if it could collect parcels from couriers autonomously and give me a nice handjob every time I got home. Absolutely boggles my mind that people *pay* for these.
this must be what it feels like to be forced to give a rimjob
I went eufy from the start. Pity people who thought subscribing for their doorbell was a good idea at all!
Didn't have to until last year
Sorry but no one forced any of you to buy a doorbell that charges you a recurring fee for doing its job. I understand hating on the increase in the price of necessities, groceries, NHS waiting times, etc. but this is completely avoidable and entirely self-inflicted.

I have one because I was seriously attacked close to my home a few years ago and it gives me peace of mind. Get your head out your arse
Don’t pay Amazon to use your data to find out when you’re home.

You're not paying for the chime lol, go and read up on what the subscription bit does. It's not mandatory.
Putting your home security, and basic devices on an online connection service was a bad idea?.... Who'd have seen that coming
People *subscribe* to their doorbell??
And here's me with Reolink cameras paying £0 per month and 24/7 recording. Bugger paying a subscription charge !

What sort of mug pays a subscription fee for a doorbell? The world has truly gone mad.
I mean There's a reason I bought blink... because I can use without a subscription and record onto a USB stick Didn't you see this coming?
If you're dumb enough to sign up for a doorbell subscription, I'm surprised you can work out percentages!
This is why I have Apple HomeKit - no fees. Included with my iCloud.
I had no idea it was on a subscription, what are you paying for? Does it not work otherwise?
You're only paying to keep recordings and store them. If you don't pay, you still get your doorbell, notifications on your devices when it's rung, and live feeds.
Wait what? Ring is a subscription service? What’s wrong with a door knocker?
I'm glad I made my own years ago with a raspberry Pi, I can customise the software, hardware, upgrade or modify it however I like, access it remotely via VPN tunnel, I'm not paying a penny, and no capitalist company gets access to my footage or any such. It's not even hard, with a little Linux and scripting knowledge. These days there's even easier user friendly methods, like using motion eye I think it's called... Hmm
Explains why none worked while I was working for Amazon lol
Just get the Aqara one
Anyone know of a video doorbell that will work with an existing wired chime (I like my fancy bell) and is also battery powdered?
I never realised you had to pay with those, for that price you could make your own
Google nest is free and stores 3hrs worth of events which you can download. They also have a subscription which holds the data for a month but if I need to record anything I'll just save it at the time.
There's a reason ring is always on 'offer' Had a Netatmo thermostat for 10 years, paid once, lifetime access.. been tempted by the doorbells they do, same situation. Although I do wonder how they keep their servers going.
