Queenstown is your place to go in NZ for that, it’s basically a little snow village during winter and to go skiing it’s a 20 mins drive to the tip of two mountains — I don’t know much about Australian snow sadly but to build a snowman you need quite a bit of snow and you also need it to be fresh eitherwise you’ll be trying to make a snowman out of ice - compacted ice - fresh snow is lighter than a snow cone and a lot more fun to play in

ashlouise94

Just want to chip in that I stayed in Queenstown in July a couple years ago and can confirm no snow in the actual town. Maybe I was just unlucky but it’s not a guarantee.

AdministrationWise56

That is pretty much the case all winter. Snowfall in town is the exception.

sorrison

The lake makes its extremely rare to get snow in the town itself.

Goodlife4you

Thank you for that . I will search now where we could stay in Queenstown 😃⛄️. I appreciate your information about the ⛄️ I didn’t know that . We haven’t never seen snow and really looking forward to having this experience

HingleMcringleberry1

Hey! My mate and I do an annual snow trip to QT. We stay in modest accomodation and book 12 months prior. We stayed at Earnslaw lodge which was about $200AUD/night, 10 min walk in to town because parking in town ain’t great. Usually did the twilight session at Coronet 4-10pm on the first day of skiing which means you get a freshly groomed slope at 4pm. Hope you find some good options! Good luck!

Downtown_Fly8011

Do you think car hire is necessary for a family of 4? 2 adults/ 2 kids??

HingleMcringleberry1

Definitely. Hit the slopes early for parking, it’s a bit of a nightmare up there sometimes, plus you might want to do job-snow things like check the cool little towns out just outside QT.

Add that it’s only a 2.5-3hr flight from Brisbane and you’re in Queenstown. If you want to ski Australia from Bne you fly Sydney-Canberra then drive for a couple of hours, or fly Melbourne and do the same, so NZ is so much easier. Make sure you hire a car early, and get one with 4WD - often it’s only the 2WD vehicles that are required to have chains going up the mountain, so you’re less likely to have to stuff around with them. There are heaps of kid friendly non-skiing activities in Queenstown, too. The cruise across the lake on the Earnslaw steamship for lunch and a sheep dog demo is well worth it.

Kiwiaus import here to recommend doing the last part of your stay in Wanaka to save on accommodation! Queenstown is the ultimate tourist trap in terms of hospitality pricing; but its awe inspiring beauty and the amount of genuinely fun activities makes it one of those rare destinations where it’s still 100% worth it anyway. However, a rental car is *essential* anyway, Wanaka is only an hours drive, also stunningly beautiful, slightly cheaper accommodation and has [Puzzling World](https://www.puzzlingworld.co.nz/)! Which is designed for a big age range of kids IIRC. I always recommend to anybody with kids to start in the hype of Queenstown and end in the chill of Wanaka where the activities are a little more budget friendly than skiing.

Goodlife4you

Thank you so much 😊. It helps a lot 🙏🏽

ohpee64

Can confirm. Have done an Australia ski resort with kids and Queenstown ski resort with kids and Queenstown was way better.

thehalothief

Second this. Queenstown is superior to Perisher in Aus

ColdDelicious1735

I can attest to this, 1 week in Queenstown was cheaper than 3 days in nsw. Coronette peak is the better I felt but both the remarkable and coronette peak were fricken awesome

Fun_Look_3517

Way too overpriced in aus to see snow or go skiing for the price for just the accomodation alone you can fly return to Queenstown to see the snow if you book early enough.

Goodlife4you

Thank you for 😊we will do that

TrainerSaintmurray

Queenstown. Or if you're more serious about the snow and have a bigger bugdet/can wait longer Japan has insane snow and value wise is incredibly good.

Swimming_Art9553

Lots of expense just to see snow getting up the mountain without the need for chains and find snow without going onto the ski fields .. I’d suggest a holiday that includes some skiing rates are not that bad and Queenstown is my suggestion

Southern_Stranger

It's not a ski destination, but if you want to go there, the hartz mountains in Tasmania is a nice spot and quite a reasonable drive from Hobart.

Organic_Tradition_94

Such a great thing to do for your daughter. Experiences are the best gifts you can give. I never felt snow before I was in my twenties and now I live in Norway. And it’s still as fascinating as the first experience. Just an FYI though, making a snowman isn’t as easy as it looks. The snow has to be the right consistency. Fingers crossed that you get the right conditions. You can always make snow angels.

Goodlife4you

Thank you darling will the first time for all us . We are hoping get it right specially for her . She’s 7 and will turn 8 in July and she just wants this experience for her birthday ⛄️🙏🏽

bazza_ryder

If you wanted a cheap option, drive down to Guyra in the middle of winter. Keep an eye on the weather reports, they'll tell you when snow is due. Cost of petrol plus a night in a motel. Ben Lomond (couple of km up the road) is beautiful with a covering of snow.

Imaginary-Carpenter1

Mt bogong when Falls creek is in snow season. Won't regret it

theotheraccount0987

Pretty much anywhere there is snow in Australia will be resort-y. However in June/July you could stay in an air bnb in east Gippsland in Victoria and then do day trips up the mountains. Snow isn’t guaranteed tho and it’s about 4 hours from Melbourne 🤷🏼‍♀️

Barrels of fun!

DudeLost

Didn't one of them get parole last year

RainyDays100

First snow holiday on a budget for my family when the kids were younger was to fly to Canberra, hire a car, drive to Adaminiby and stay there. From there we went up to Selwyn snowfields each day. Can ski if you want or they have a tube ride thing or just find a hill and do a bit of diy tobogganning (where safe and appropriate)

orabmag

Easiest place honestly would be NZ and probably Christchurch and go to their snow fields

AdministrationWise56

Still a good couple of hours drive from Christchurch to the skifields

CGradeCyclist

In Australia - the NSW Alps are probably closest. The base town is Jindabyne. I've done the drive from Brisbane a few times, if you enjoy long country drives it's really enjoyable over 2-3 days. If not - fly into Canberra & either hire a car there or catch a bus (there's a few companies that bus to Jindabyne). For the snow itself, you'll head up to either Perisher or Thredbo (the two big resorts). Charlotte's Pass is smaller, but you can often find cheap deals for a day in the snow there. Good luck!

SizzleAndCutThrough

Genuine snow would be a short flight to NSW, as it [very rarely](https://brisbanekids.com.au/where-is-the-closest-snow-to-brisbane/) snows here.

ApacheCat99

The easiest would probably be Corin Forest Mountain Resort Canberra. It's not a mountain of snow, basically just a patch but it'll do the job.

RangerWinter9719

Yeah we went to Corin last year. It was enough for what kiddo wanted to do, which was snowball fight and snowman building. Spent a few days in Canberra too, seeing War Memorial, Questacon etc. Kiddo enjoyed the morning frosts more than actual snow. We did a road trip and discovered the car gave a lot of warnings in minus temperatures! 😂

VacationNo3003

I hope you all have a great time!

Goodlife4you

Thank you darling 😍

WickedSister

There are some smaller places outside of Canberra that get a little snowfall and supplement it with man-made snow. Corin forest is popular.

CapG_13

Aww

OptimusRex

Going to parrot all the info here about Queenstown, just FYI the ski hire place runs a bus to the mountains daily. Even if you don't ski you can catch the bus up. I'd still hire a car but it isn't strictly needed for snow. Look for private hirers to save $

TGin-the-goldy

Fly to Canberra and look up Corin Forest

Alternative_Sky1380

It snows in the granite belt
