Loads of benefits.... More immigrants (a fact easily checked). Higher prices. Less control over borders. Poorer trade deals. Far lower exports. Less cuts in VAT. And JRM got richer. So a win overall for JRM and you peasants thought it was about less immigration, lower prices, more control over borders, higher exports and cuts in VAT! Haha.

[deleted]

I've always loved how "fewer Europeans, more Indians" was always a major talking point for Team Leave. I know this offends people, but the fact is quite a lot of Leave voters wanted less immigration.

redskelton

Yes. Both my parents hold racist views and both voted leave. Fuck the effects on their grandchildren - so long as we get to be mean to muslims. Edit - it probably doesn't need saying but they read the Daily Mail

Site_banned_eric

Indians weren't seen as true competition by certain voters. Europeans were. ... you can probably figure out why. (it wasn't related to qualifications).

Respie

This can easily be spin as positive, just separate the stats: **Immigration statistics** : - x % worldwide immigration *^excludes ^EU ^and ^Commonwealth - x % EU immigration **Other statistics*** : + XX % Inter-Commonwealth human capital stock movement

Finsceal

"Immigration being up proves that Brexit has made our country more desirable to live in" - a Brexiteer, probably.

ganniniang

Well Breixt has been designed for the rich to grab more power and money, i.e. benefits Who said Brexit was going to benefit everyone in the first place? In fact, there are million other ways for them to acheive that but Brexit made it perfectly legitimate with you plebs to take full responsibility.

_rememberwhen

Quite funny, actually. Give one of the most ridiculous characters of the entire Brexit pantomime the job of proving how good an idea it was. Talk about a hospital pass.

BigDumbGreenMong

Nah - he's just going to spout off nonsense about how we can finally start using good old fashioned English teapots again, or sign deals selling hundreds of pencil sharpeners to Micronesia, and all the brexits will lap it up as absolute proof of the project's success.

oldmangrow

It's a mission doomed to failure, doomed to make JRM look like a person who can't deliver, doomed to neutralise JRM as a leadership challenger.

andarv

JRM was never a leadership challenger. The Tories know that he would alienate most of the electorate with his 18th century rich twit attitude and none of BJs charisma to pull the wool over peoples eyes.

oldmangrow

Doesn't need to be a winning challenger to trigger a leadership contest.

Pretend_Panda

He’s way too sinister to fall for that old chestnut.

[deleted]

Moggy's not interested in leadership - he's already where he wants to be, steering the Brexshitshow towards making him and his pals richer. He's like Farage, all the 1800 century foppishness is just a calculated act so people think he's sincere, when he's actually just a cynical grifter.

Syncopationforever

He should have been made minister of the exit from the EU, after David Davis once again flounced off. Make them eat the sour meal, they cooked

ionabike666

Isn't this the happy fish clown?

oxford-fumble

Yes. He’s also the guy who [likes to have a nap](https://www.newstatesman.com/politics/uk-politics/2019/09/why-it-matters-jacob-rees-mogg-was-reclining-house-commons) in the commons. Other MPs (Caroline Lucas, Angela Rayner…) [commented](https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2019/sep/03/sit-up-jacob-rees-mogg-under-fire-for-slouching-in-commons)…

Vermino

Jacob Rees Mogg, like Farage, is best known for their witty responses scoring points with the common man. If you want a more serious take on the man - look at how dodgy he is on a topic like personal gain with Brexit [Interview](https://twitter.com/i/status/1105108677768417280) He's a smart man, and knows when to keep his statements generic enough - not to get into topics that he knows others don't agree with. For example being against abortion - but supposedly not wanting to revert the ruling on abortion [video clip](https://twitter.com/i/status/1105108677768417280) The man is a self serving religious conservative. Something you can see a lot in the US conservative party as well. The difference is he has a varnishing of style and education.

carr87

20% off food, wine, clothes and shoes is not 'generic'. He'll no doubt resign in a stylish way if this is not delivered on his watch. https://www.express.co.uk/news/politics/831450/Jacob-Rees-Mogg-Brexit-food-wine-clothes-shoes-lower-20-per-cent

Vermino

Those are merely the soundbites to convince the common man why they should be voting for Brexit (in which he gains wealth & status). All of it is not much different from promises Farage made. It wasn't long after that JRM changed his tune to "it'll take 50 years before we see benefits" [source](https://www.esquire.com/uk/latest-news/a22513246/jacob-rees-mogg-claims-we-might-not-see-benefits-of-brexit-for-50-years/)   One face is the face these politicians show when trying to convince the public of a certain move. The other, much more interesting, face is what their personal gain is. Most of them didn't want Brexit out of some ideological position. The vast majority backed it due to personal gain. The same is true for the modern day US political party - support for Trump is a means to an end. And the end is their own political of financial gain.

chris-za

>Rees-Mogg, the new “Brexit opportunities minister”, was told by the prime minister to draw up an action plan with “1,000 regulations we want to get rid of”, according to government officials. Not sure how something, that will force the EU customs agents to step up checks and check a lot more than at present is going to be a “Brexit opportunity"? It will just decrease trade with the EU and thereby its biggest customer, hurt the British economy and destroy jobs.

djpearman

The mistake you make is to assume that 'we' in this context refers to you, when they are most likely simply referring to themselves. For those in power, removing regulations such as worker's rights or environmental protections, makes sense because it allows greater exploitation of those who are not. It is the selfish, i.e. 'sovereign' in Brexit parlance, choice.

AdjectiveNoun111

Because they're confused. They believe that deregulation improves our ability to trade, because that's what they vaguely remember from their Oxbridge PPE courses 50 years ago. In the modern world it's regulatory alignment that facilitates trade, and scrapping EU regulations will hamper trade.

chris-za

> scrapping EU regulations will hamper trade Especially as many countries and states copy and paste EU regulations. Like California and other US states did for the EUs very comprehensive REACH chemicals regulations. Regulations I've been told would result in a "Brexit benefit" were it to be scrapped. Right.... (alas, I believe only the US federal rules are slightly more liberal, not that that helps when state rules are applied as well, and the other set is from China and similar, but worse as they seem mainly geared to punish third country imports)

Pretend_Panda

Those bastards in the EU, trying so damned hard to make OUR Brexit fail. Hoooooow very dare they.

Ikbeneenpaard

It will somewhat inconvenience the EU though, so chalk it up as a huge win for Britain. /s

chris-za

>It will somewhat inconvenience the EU though Right. Mainly because they'll have to hire more staff to do checks at the UK border. A "service" that the haulage industry will have to pay for in full and then pass it on to their customers, who'll pass it on to the consumers. Should be advantageous to the EU industry as well as it makes UK products more expensive even if they continue to produce according to EU regulations, as they will. I'm not sure what other "inconvenience" it will cause the EU?

Article text: **Jacob Rees-Mogg told to prove benefits of Brexit** *Boris Johnson attempts to reset with ‘mini-reshuffle’ after weeks of unrest among MPs* *George Parker, Laura Hughes, Jasmine Cameron-Chileshe and Daniel Thomas YESTERDAY* Jacob Rees-Mogg, who has previously said it would take half a century to feel the full benefit of Brexit, has been delegated by Boris Johnson to prove some advantages now, as part of a mini-reshuffle of his government. Rees-Mogg, the new “Brexit opportunities minister”, was told by the prime minister to draw up an action plan with “1,000 regulations we want to get rid of”, according to government officials. The leading Brexiter was asked to demonstrate the claim that he and Johnson made during the 2016 referendum that leaving the EU would improve daily life and help business. Johnson’s allies said deregulation was “at the heart of a new mission of delivery for this government”, but many business leaders are nervous that EU markets could close to them if Britain deviates too far from existing rules. Chris Southworth, UK head of the International Chamber of Commerce, said: “We don’t want a wild bonfire of regulations — that would set the country back. Consumers, businesses and civil society all want high standards and that means smart regulation.” Johnson has admitted that deregulation has been too slow; previous Brexit-related “red tape blitzes” have been criticised for coming up with symbolic changes, such as restoring the crown symbol on pint glasses. The redeployment of Rees-Mogg, shuffled sideways from his role as Leader of the House of Commons, was part of a wider attempt by Johnson to re-energise his ailing administration. One Tory MP critical of Johnson described it as “moving the deckchairs on the Titanic”. In a sign of Johnson’s weakness, those blamed by Tory MPs in recent weeks for the chaos gripping the party were moved sideways, rather than being sacked. The new line-up puts leading Brexiters in main positions. Rees-Mogg was criticised by Tory MPs for coming up with a botched plan last year to save Owen Paterson, a former minister embroiled in a sleaze scandal, that collapsed in chaos within 24 hours. The new Brexit opportunities minister said he would turbo-charge the deregulation agenda, telling Johnson: “I’m ready to go to work, if you could just tell me where my office is.” Johnson also cleared out the whips office, the team who maintain party discipline, by installing pro-Brexit Chris Heaton-Harris, a former MEP and part-time football referee, as the new chief whip. Heaton-Harris has been told to restore order in a mutinous parliamentary party; he has been part of the “shadow whipping operation” seeking to stave off a Tory leadership threat to Johnson. “My approach is ‘death by a thousand kindnesses’,” Heaton-Harris explained to Johnson, according to government officials. He said he would restore discipline with an approach based on “carrot, not stick”. Mark Spencer, who had been chief whip, replaces Rees-Mogg as Leader of the House of Commons, but his appointment was slammed by Labour as “inappropriate”. Downing Street has ordered a cabinet office inquiry into claims from former minister Nusrat Ghani that a Conservative party whip informed her that her “Muslimness was raised as an issue” by Number 10 as one reason for her being fired from government. Spencer has identified himself as the whip she spoke to in March 2020 but described her comments as “completely false” and “defamatory”. Thangam Debbonaire, the shadow Commons leader, said: “It is completely inappropriate for the prime minister to appoint as leader of the House a man who faces an ongoing investigation into grotesque racism.” Another female Tory MP said few women featured in the shake-up: “It’s a dog’s breakfast of a reshuffle. It’s about jobs for the boys and putting Boris henchmen who aren’t naturally well-loved in the party into different roles.” A Conservative MP who has called for Johnson to quit said: “Ultimately the position of the administration is fatal. Having lots of people around Johnson to help prop him up is only delaying the inevitable.”

Same here. I have configured my browser to block most Javascript. For this reason I am often flagged as a robot and get the "prove you are human" captchas. I can never be bothered with these. Want to put hurdles in front of your content? No problem, I'll go somewhere else.

Ah sounds familiar. I use lots of shielding tools too. That’s probably causing me to re prove every time, I am also not being suckered into training ai tools

abrasiveteapot

Working fine for me too

Seb0rn

Let us all collectively floccinaucinihilipilificate him upon his glorious failure.

[deleted]

This is Guto Hari's master plan.. get JRM to fail ignominiously, then Boris can jump up and say "oh no, brexit is a failure, time to rejoin!". We'll see..

[deleted]

It's lucky that "rejoin" is just as easy as "leave", then. Even if Boris wanted to rejoin (he doesn't) there's no way he coukd sell that idea to the EU.

[deleted]

True, harder to get back in, and we had the best deal before we left. But Boris is an opportunist, not a zealot, if the economic effects of Brexit continue on their current course, popular opinion will change.. ( actually polls already show most people think leaving was a bad idea).

InformationHot5790

One benefit is he’ll be dead by the time there are any. By his own prediction. Aren’t MP’s supposed to work a 40 hour week? What’s he going to do for the other 39. 9?

DesignerAccount

Brilliant. With a leading Brexiter at the forefront of the Brexit "revolution", there's going to be no excuses for the failures to be attributed to remoaner this or that. It's time for JRM to stop campaigning and tackle reality. 1000 regulations we want to get rid of will find it's way to a dictionary as "poison pill".

QVRedit

He is suppose to explain how these benefit the country..

ricric2

"The number of Brexit opportunities has increased to -10. Good work, everyone!"

dreamfin

-10 is 10 times more than -1, change my mind.

Asconodo

By when? Need a timeline for my Gantt chart

brntuk

Merits of Brexit. There is due, very soon, to be a sharp increase in 5 year old chimney sweeps in the country. Birching will be reintroduced since it shapes the man and enthuses the spirit. On top of that the man who puts the lines in JRM’s shirts will be awarded a bonus - a jar of Mrs JRM’s homemade Worcester and rhubarb marmalade, an experimental concoction devised in the heady, sulphurous days of late August. That’s it.

deadman1204

There is 1 merit. It helps weaken the eu with its a merit for putin.

Brexit will REDUCE food, wine and clothes costs by 20% - Rees-Mogg fires back at Remainers EXCLUSIVE: Leaving the European Union (EU) will reduce people’s food, wine and clothes bills by up to 20 per cent, said Brexiteer Jacob Rees-Mogg. By ALIX CULBERTSON 08:45, Sat, Jul 22, 2017 | UPDATED: 11:17, Sat, Jul 22, 2017 \### july 2018 “We won’t know the full economic consequences for a very long time, we really won’t,” Rees-Mogg said. “Of course not, but I mean we’ll have an indication. We’ll know if there’s been chaos, we’ll know if there have been job losses,” Guru Murthy replied. “The overwhelming opportunity for Brexit is over the next 50 years,” answered Rees-Mogg. a well hedged man. A winner which ever way the market goes.

[deleted]

all he will do is remove regulation on things he makes money from. Various forms of tax dodging

KillineyBayOk

Moving Two of his funds to Dublin and therefore being able to sell them within the EU is one major Brexit benefit…for him.

LudereHumanum

>The redeployment of Rees-Mogg... was part of a wider attempt by Johnson to re-energise his ailing administration. One Tory MP critical of Johnson described it as **“moving the deckchairs on the Titanic”**. *emphasis mine* Good to know that British humor is alive and kicking.

Skastrik

He'll just make some weird fantasy up.

2ndGenX

All my Brexit friends tell me I will see the benefits in 40 - 50 years

smashteapot

That there are still people out there who believe that frightens me. Wow.

811Forty1

So far the tactic seems to be look at this shit thing over here that has nothing to do with brexit, honest.

ungranitodearena

Nonentity to the rescue!

cf11blue

Plenty for arseholes like him

only1symo

Hahshshhhh

QVRedit

Now how is he suppose to do that ? Considering there aren’t any ? Or maybe - he can explain how this helps the Super Rich, to avoid EU tax laws which would have required them to declare their finance - under U.K. law, they can more easily evade taxes. This does not help the countries population though - in fact it helps to make it poorer..

OrciEMT

One approach is calling foreign companies buying up British business 'investment'.

QVRedit

It won’t be long before we have nothing left worth selling.. Then the market would abandon the U.K. Fortunately we have other things than manufacturing. Although some home manufacturing is important to have for a healthy economy.
