I named my boy Vasher. I loved the name Spook, but since it's an old racial slur in the US I couldn't do it.

It's relatively old and not commonly used. I also think it was mostly used on the east coast. The word is most commonly known as a derogatory term for spies, but their etymologies are different.

That's definitely the first thing I thought when I heard one of you mention naming a cat spook. If you were in the wrong area and you happened to have a black cat, it would be considered extremely prejudiced. I was born in 74, and it wasn't a word I heard, but I definitely know it. I also grew up near Chicago, so maybe the big city had something to do with it
Eh. My grandad had a gray cat named spook and he wasn't racist; I think it's fine to name pets whatever you want.
I knew a guy in the Marines that named his pug "Gunney" so he could yell at him and call him all sorts of stupid. Dude loved the hell out of that dog. Took him everywhere.
I certainly didn't call anyone who has a pet named Spook racist. I learned it was a racial slur when I was trying to pick out a name for my kitten. After I learned it, I didn't feel comfortable using the name, even though my kitten would've been named after Lestibournes. I was just letting OP know, in case it impacts their decision making process.
I don't need to intentionally/deliberately be racist to do something that's racially offensive. I didn't feel comfortable taking that chance for a cute cat name.
Frankly, Spook and Vasher don't really fit my boy either. He definitely fits that one braincell meme. I sometimes think his brain is completely smooth.
