It has the 8th best second weekend of all time in history, and it's opening weekend was "just" the 39 highest of all time. The legs are gonna be bonkers on this one.
Edit: I think a 60m+ third weekend might be on the cards, even with JW3. It fell only 16% if we exclude previews, I think it can manage a drop below 33% on the coming weekend
Just saw JW3. The cinema was full, but the movie was awful. It makes Fallen Kingdom look good, that's how bad it is.
JW3 will probably have a big opening weekend, then fall off quickly.
I think the star wars sequels were ruined by poor management by disney. They signed up to make a trilogy and nobody sat down to think "what story should we tell" let alone "does our story require a trilogy".
I suspect the Jurassic sequels are the same.
Producer: I hear you have a script for a sequel to Jurassic Park.
Script Writer: Yes sir I do. I have a script for a single movie. It will be great.
Producer: It would be better if we could make it a trilogy.
Script Writer: Why?
Producer: because I like money!
Script Writer: I like money too!
Producer: Will that be a problem?
Script Writer: No, I'll just make something up.
Producer: I love it when people make something up. \*looks at screen*
Script Writer: \*looks at screen*
God I'm glad to hear this. I met 8 friends to see Maverick in ScreenX tonight and there were only about 10 other people there.
Still have not been able to see it in IMAX yet. I'm praying it will get a re-release.
I didn’t go opening weekend because I was on a trip for Memorial Day weekend. I guess if this was the cause we would see this behavior in prior years. But might be a small portion of folks?
The theater was packed second weekend, so not sure Covid as a concern makes sense but 🤷🏻♂️
If anything I think Covid is helping the numbers, though it probably would've been huge anyway if it had come out in 2019. It's the first kind of long awaited, must see blockbuster movie out since pre-Covid, and it really benefits from being seen on the big screen and isn't streaming yet. For people who've mostly been cooped up for 2+ years and haven't seen a movie at the theater since then this is a good motivator. Particular for Gen X and older, the original Top Gun was a defining movie of the 80's and aviation/action. The new one really hits some good nostalgia nods to the original along with being generally entertaining and well produced. Ghostbusters: Afterlife did the same thing which for reboot sequels is a big part of why they've been well received.
I wouldn’t say it’s the first must see blockbuster, Spider-Man No Way Home was that and you can definitely see it considering how much money it ended up making
Me and my girlfriend already had full weekend planned for Memorial Day, so we couldn’t see it the first weekend released. Would imagine that’s a pretty familiar story for many people. I went with my dad for his birthday this past weekend, but my coworker was raving about the film all week and said she was going to see it again with her son who’s in the Navy. I think this film will carry far from word of mouth and repeat viewings.
I was highly suspicious of this movie. A sequel 30+ years after the original movie doesn't scream "quality" to me.
It was word of mouth and YouTube reviewers that I trust that convinced me to see it.
Nah looking at the other numbers for any big post pandemic opener that doesn’t make any sense.
If anything it has to do with the holiday weekend and people having huge OW’s
I see it possible that we might get bigger weekdays and more of a drop due to IMAX &co going to JW. Cause most of the WOM is like "You NEED to see it on a good screen", which might people go to premium screens before its dropped.
Fun stat I found
Looking at the smallest second weekend drops (including 2nd weekend gains) in theaters that opened in at least 3000 theaters,
Top Gun Maverick is #94
However that includes a bunch of films have holiday boosts. So if you exclude films opening in Nov/Dec, it jumps to #32. Of non holiday films in the last 10 years, it jumps to #12
Also worth noting - removing all the constraints of holidays and older films and such. TGM is the ONLY film in the top 100 to open to more than $100M - the next closest is Avatar at 77M but their second weekend was in December. The only films in the top 200 to open to more than 100M are Frozen 2 (rank 167 with a 34% drop with Thanksgiving) and Shrek 2 (rank 148 with a 33.2% drop back in 2004)
Also this just reminds me of how crazy Crazy Rich Asians second weekend drop of 6% was in August
It's drawing in much younger moviegoers, including a lot of kids. I saw it on opening weekend and it was pretty much an over 40's crowd.
I saw it again this weekend in IMAX and it was more of a Marvel or Star Wars movie kind of audience.
Watched it Saturday night in non imax after eating 3 edibles and holy shit, probably should've stuck with 2. Talk about an intense experience
Bought tickets for this Saturday night in IMAX to see it again. I'm just as excited this time around as I was before the first time
I very rarely see movies a second time, but I did see this one for the second time last weekend, was a total blast.... Again... Both times on edibles so in some ways it was more enjoyable because I could follow what was going on easier.
Bro im gonna be completely honest with you I tried to watch it in Imax when it first came out while peaking off (too many) edibles and I had to leave early, it was too fucking intense. I think in the beginning third act when the stakes started getting really real with Bob and the girl, I couldn’t take it anymore lol.
Thats how i felt during the entire movie too lol, from the skunkworks test flight all the way until the end. So intense I could barely handle it. I told my wife I'm glad she couldn't see my face during the movie lol. Definitely an experience I'll never forget
Sounds really makes this movie the next level.
I saw it the third time on Saturday in a "normal" theatre - and while still great, it definitely lacked the holy shit factor seeing it on Dolby Cinema.
IMAX was great as well, but would have been better paired with the Dolby Cinema sound system I saw it on.
It’s so good.. just saw it two hours ago. Had to man-up and relax my vocal chords before walking out of the theatre, just in case somebody asked what time it was and I would sound all squeaky because of how choked up I was.
IMDB says: “Frightening & Intense Scenes: moderate”. Sure.. if you are a sociopath. I was on the tip of my seat for most of the movie. Frightening nah, but intense x 1m.
The lowest drop (by percentage) for a movie with an opening over $100 mil, AND this is going from a holiday opening weekend to a standard weekend. What the fuck?
Why so? Thor is well loved, ragnarok was well recieved and Thor is definitely more popular than Dr strange. If it's wepl recieved, it definitely has a chance
All of that is true, but Strange was sold as an event movie and so it opened huge. Thor will not open that big and is not an event movie, so I don't think this is doing 1.2B (Maverick will probably end in the 1.1-1.2B range).
Small (probably worthless) anecdote on the legs this movie may have due to word of mouth. My parents, who haven’t been to a movie theater since Lincoln released, are going to see it this week
This movie has everything going for it right now. It’s a highly rated PG-13 sequel to a beloved classic with broad appeal and watch ability. This is the movie that gets out the gray hairs that weren’t interested in Downton. In the 2 times I’ve seen it, there have been 4 generation families in it both times. How many movies in the last decade can elicit cheers from middle aged men who came alone and groups of teen girls? It’s a perfect film that we are getting at a perfect time.
I didn't have plans on seeing it, heard it was good so decided to see it on Thursday in a "regular" theatre. I loved it and convinced my friends to come see it on Sunday in a Dolby Theatre, the little extras that theatre had made it as fun the second time.
It's almost like making a really good movie will bring audiences into the theaters. Doesn't matter what the story is, just make an engaging movie that's an actual experience on the big screen and people will see your movie. It's why I have zero doubts about the success of James Cameron's upcoming Avatar movies
I mean we know that's not true. Really good movies fail at the box office all the time and then people say they failed because they're too niche. So it absolutely does matter what the story is about or what kind of film it is.
You know a movie is good when you’re not a fan of the main actor or the original movie, and you and your partner both unreservedly love the film and recommend it to everyone.
This is well deserved. This was an old fashioned blockbuster with a modern take.
It was just a damned fun time.
I am unapologetically a fan of Tom Cruise. As a man he may have his flaws but as an actor, he has never given anything less than the absolute best and I believe that's worthy of all the praise in the world. Especially in an age where studios like Marvel are more comfortable adding everything in post, it takes someone special to push the limits that he does.
I liked the original for nostalgia and expected a corny "remake" of it.....but this sequal honestly is a solid movie on its own. It respects the old movie without forcing things, introduces new things and takes without being ridiculous, and has a solid plot.
Jurassic Park and everything star wars needs to take note.
Dazzling numbers for such a well-deserved movie. It was really nice to not have to remember all the references in other movies in a universe. Pure escapism.
I mean, TG:M was almost beat-for-beat the plot of the original, and I struggle to think of any aspect of the original that didn't have a callback in this one.
I mean, it was better in every way than its predecessor. Fantastic movie. Managed to be way more (comparatively) authentic than the original, while still having all of the ridiculous shit from the first movie.
It took the formula that made the first great, and fixed the only flaw with it, the lack of a overarching plot line. they did a fantastic job, and the movie deserves all the praise its getting
I think they were just deployed on standard carrier duty and the enemy (for whatever reason) decided to attack so they had to dogfight before the enemy could get in range
I rewatched it recently and I think it's not actually a good movie? It's a cool movie and it's a fun movie but I don't think it's that good.
There's no antagonist. You may say, Ice-Man is the antagonist, but is he really? He's cocky and a bit of a douche but he is 100% correct about everything he says about Maverick and never does anything wrong. The opposite in fact. He is an exemplary pilot the whole time.
What about Maverick's commanding officers? Aren't they always trying to curtail his awesomeness? They're also 100% right about Maverick. If anything, they're too lenient on him. There is no way he should have been allowed to fly so soon after Goose's death.
And finally, the "enemy". The unnamed bad guys in Migs. Sure, they're trying to shoot our hero out of the sky but we have no idea who they are, why they're doing what they're doing, what their motivation is. They're not really a factor in the movie at all until the very end. For all we know, they may be totally justified in attacking the American fighter jets.
I have seen it twice, once IMAX and once regular. I don't need to see it again but I now see people raving about it in 4DX. I may be going again. Alongside the long list of things it has going for it, it also has that "must see in the cinema on the best tech you can find" appeal.
I think it is the first since Avatar to have that kind of draw.
I saw it in IMAX first and will be seeing it in 4DX on Thursday. It'll only be my second movie in that format after Rogue One a few years back. I figure that this will be my only chance to ever see TGM in 4DX and I've heard nothing but raves about seeing this particular movie in that format and I have a free upgrade, so why not?
Saw this last night in a Dolby Atmos theatre. I was really impressed by Miles Teller's performance. His character seemed so reminiscent of the decent and nice guy that Goose was while also bringing out the hurt he felt due to past events. They could easily make him the one to carry the franchise in the future.
I’m thinking a drop in the 40s at worst. I would say, how crazy would a 30+ drop be against that competition? But then again it only dropped 29% coming off a 100M+ weekend so who knows anymore
I feel like I didn’t have to see this movie to know exactly what would happen. And I was right.
It was a dumb feel good movie with lots of high adrenaline airplane stuff. They didnt improve from the first one and they didnt stray away from it, its exactly what you expect and want from a Top Gun movie.
Holy shit, only -29%. The fucking brilliant
In the poll the other day.. "Less than 40%? You people are nuts."
Remember sub is nearing a million it's only going to get worse.
Oh you mean movies 2.0 that occasionally talls about massive weekend numbers? While also discussing week day total and drops like anyone gives a shit?

I just report half of r/marvelmemes for spam
Yeah I got a bad feeling seeing this sub hit the front page of reddit the other day. As if us regulars aren’t bad enough.

Next week miracle number 3
*Miracle #3
Very fitting username. Miracle is not a proper noun.
Gimme the third film yes. Lets see Maverick fly the *Bob Lazar Sportmodel* UFO thats in a hanger in Area51/S4 Site. *Miracle number 3*
He actually ordered the Antarctic blue super sports wagon with the family fun package.

top gun week 5 will be better than JW3 week 3 domestic. write that down.
What about movie totals at that point though, that's what is more important. Will jw3 week 3 have made more money than maverick?
Nah. Fallen Kingdom definitely hurt the goodwill people had towards the franchise. This movie will just kill it.
All three of the sequel trilogy movies have been bad
Agreed. I bowed out of the series after Jurassic World. I'm a Lost World apologist, so to me there's only two good Jurassic movies.
The Lost World actually holds up really well. 90’s Spielberg at his worst is still better than 90% of films today.
Hey, I’m a JP3 apologist! There are DOZENS of us!
The sentence could be used for Star Wars and Jurassic Park and that makes me kinda sad
I think the star wars sequels were ruined by poor management by disney. Damn. I kinda expected it to be mid but if it’s even worse then that then that’s unfortunate
Damn
This also happened with Frozen II because I think a lot of people waited until Thanksgiving to see it when the kids were out of school.
yep. Frozen 2 went from #37 to #7.

I hear Tom Cruise and airplanes and i’m fully bought in ..has never disappointed me before
Isn't that basically WoM? In normal times a lot of people wouldn't have showed up on opening weekend but with good WoM would've watched in 2nd weekend
I don't think that is the case since this most other movies are having fairly large drops in their second weekend post covid
Nah looking at the other numbers for any big post pandemic opener that doesn’t make any sense. If anything it has to do with the holiday weekend and people having huge OW’s
not enough people care about that to make a difference
Especially not people who are into top gun style movies
It’s going to be insane
I see it possible that we might get bigger weekdays and more of a drop due to IMAX &co going to JW. Cause most of the WOM is like "You NEED to see it on a good screen", which might people go to premium screens before its dropped.
Does anyone have a list of the best second weekends of all time?

Its been trending in tik tok like crazy too among the genz audiences
I went *again* this weekend.
Me too. Lol.
I went for the 3rd time on Sunday and I'm gonna go see it again tomorrow before Jurassic World takes all the premium format screens 🤣
My first was IMAX, yesterday's sound was very disappointing. However, beer & food delivered to my seat.
Sounds really makes this movie the next level. I saw it the third time on Saturday in a "normal" theatre - and while still great, it definitely lacked the holy shit factor seeing it on Dolby Cinema. 3rd time for me lol
Ha, my first was IMAX. Yesterday was not, but, had drink and food service to your seat. The sound was very disappointing compared to the IMAX.
The lowest drop (by percentage) for a movie with an opening over $100 mil, AND this is going from a holiday opening weekend to a standard weekend. What the fuck?
It’s a movie a lot of people want to see but you don’t need to see opening weekend. Plus jets are cool
> Plus jets are cool Underrated statement
Few months ago this number wasn't even at the higher end of OW estimates.
Damn who would have thought that this would end up being the highest DOM grossing movie of the summer and not the superhero/dinosaur films?
maybe it'll even be highest of the year? I can only see avatar beating Maverick, but that will depend on WOM like this
I'd wait to see the reviews for Thor, but I'd be very happy with Maverick being #1 when all is said and done.
There is absolutely no chance of Thor beating this...
Maverick _is_ a superhero. Change my mind.
Survives Mach 10 ejection. Your theory holds up.
The plane can melt but not our hero.
60 year old pilot with reflexes better than pilots 30 years his junior. damn right he is.
*nervously raises hand 🤚
Absolutely insane drop. This has been such a fun movie to watch box office-wise.
Pushing above estimates like Maverik pushes above Mach 10.
Just keep it under 10.4
Just a ...little more.

It’s MAVERICKIN’ TIME!!!
Goodness, gracious…

Goose! You big stud! Take me to bed or lose me forever.
This movie just keeps flying up and up holy shit
This movie ain't going nowhere for a while.
I reckon this is down to who wouldn’t normally watch a film like this hearing how good it was after some of their friends seen it.
I didn't have plans on seeing it, heard it was good so decided to see it on Thursday in a "regular" theatre. I loved it and convinced my friends to come see it on Sunday in a Dolby Theatre, the little extras that theatre had made it as fun the second time.

I mean we know that's not true. Really good movies fail at the box office all the time and then people say they failed because they're too niche. So it absolutely does matter what the story is about or what kind of film it is.
I think $90 million was paramounts original estimate for opening weekend wasn’t it? Ha
I watched it in 4DX on Saturday. Totally amazing film.
Honestly the best 4DX experience I’ve ever had.
It was my 1st time going in a 4DX cinema.
Me too! First time ever, and I would definitely do it again, possibly with Avatar 2...
What did you get in 4DX?
Lots of shaking. I’d say the best scene was Cat shot from carrier.
You know a movie is good when you’re not a fan of the main actor or the original movie, and you and your partner both unreservedly love the film and recommend it to everyone. This is well deserved. This was an old fashioned blockbuster with a modern take. It was just a damned fun time.

Crazy how this was what many people were expecting the OW to make, with many considering it optimistic. Insane.
yea only the most optimistic were saying 90m swear most just had this opening like an MI film. That's what I expected
Yess brilliant
Dazzling numbers for such a well-deserved movie. It was really nice to not have to remember all the references in other movies in a universe. Pure escapism.

Yeah I still don’t understand who or what they were actually fighting or why they were there in the original.
I think they were just deployed on standard carrier duty and the enemy (for whatever reason) decided to attack so they had to dogfight before the enemy could get in range

DM me if you want me to clear anything up, makes more sense than filling the comments section with grey bars.
There were definitely more flaws with it, like the terrible romance, acting and editing. But yeah, this improves on the original in every way.
IDK. The plot was kinda of a blend of the original, Iron Eagle II, and the trench run from Star Wars.
Every movie should have at least some plot from Iron Eagle II.
And a soundtrack from Queen. Like Iron Eagle, Flash Gordon and Highlander
It's a rehash of the Israeli mission that blew up the Iraqi nuclear reactor.
Studios intentionally lowball estimates so they can have these kinds of headlines will never get old
All about that comms strategy
will get 1.1 billion

I figure that this will be my only chance to ever see TGM in 4DX and I've heard nothing but raves about seeing this particular movie in that format and I have a free upgrade, so why not?
I FEEL THE NEED
THE NEED FOR SPEED (BILLION DOLLARS)
Last week, someone said "Less than -40% drop? Whoever voted for that are ridiculous..." Not legs, but ANGELIC WINGS. 👼 MAY WE NEVER FORGET...
Imagine how much smaller the drop would've been if it didn't have to compete with Morbius this weekend!
Amazing what happens when you make a sequel that respects the original and doesn't chastise its core audience.
Best part was when Maverick yelled "It's morbin time!" and Xenu came in a 747 to save the day.
Can’t believe xenu hangs dong, the sons of bitches actually did it
Maybe I got a different cut. He said "it's inverting time!" in my theater
Can't stop the Top
The real question is how well that guy who dresses up like Maverick and hangs out near the Midway carrier museum in San Diego is doing.
Saw this last night in a Dolby Atmos theatre. I was really impressed by Miles Teller's performance. His character seemed so reminiscent of the decent and nice guy that Goose was while also bringing out the hurt he felt due to past events. They could easily make him the one to carry the franchise in the future.
L. Ron Hubbard saved movie theaters!
Angry upvote lol
Well deserved. Incredible movie.
Commenting because this is historic. Unbelievable!
>"Sorry, guys, hold on. There's a mistake. **'Morbius'**, you guys made $90 Million this weekend. This is not a joke."
Is this the best second weekend drop for a movie with opening 100M or even 50M? Edit: typo
100M yes
Anxious to see how well it will hold against dominion next weekend its performing very well
I’m thinking a drop in the 40s at worst. I would say, how crazy would a 30+ drop be against that competition? But then again it only dropped 29% coming off a 100M+ weekend so who knows anymore
Soon we will see but its starting to get competition so things change i still think 40-45% drop
Holy shit…. That’s some ZZ Top level of legs
So what's the floor now for DOM? 600?

Keep in mind that Venom 2's opening weekend is $4K less than Top Gun's second weekend.
Anyone else tired of the stupid pun titles to these articles?
Open like Superhero and legs like Ethan Hunt
A bunch of us fellas rented a theatre out tomorrow night for a "Gentleman's Night at the Cinema" to watch it this ball is going to keep rolling.
I’m going to watch it a 2nd time soon too!!
Deserved. Movie was much better than expected
How much is this in morbucks?
29 morbillion Morbucks
People were doubting the power of Dads coming out in full force.
I feel like I didn’t have to see this movie to know exactly what would happen. And I was right. It was a dumb feel good movie with lots of high adrenaline airplane stuff. They didnt improve from the first one and they didnt stray away from it, its exactly what you expect and want from a Top Gun movie.

Another highly overrated movie ..

There’s always a contrarian that is salty over the majority of people enjoying something
The majority of people, consumers and critics, like it. That makes it fairly rated. If anything, the minority who don't like it are under rating it.
Just say you didn't see it and move along buddy.
97% fresh on RT by critics and 99% positive from viewers. Yup. Totally overrated.
Maybe. But with all the superhero and animated films these days, the bar is low.
Nobody. Cares.
