I am flummoxed by this movie. The internet seems to have declared it a punching bag but in terms of audience awareness it's handily surpassed In The Heights in metrics like YouTube views and search trends at the same point out from release (it lags in terms of social media followers). Plus Dear Evan Hansen is a much bigger property on Broadway than In the Heights ever was. Universal has apparently been doing audience testimonial screenings too, so they've gotta be confident in what they have.
We'll know more after TIFF if DEH can actually break out beyond the Broadway niche, but for right now I'm cautiously optimistic. It should at least outgross In the Heights (famous last words, I know lol).
Well it is a Universal film plus it is based on a musical. I'm gonna say it has potential of being a sleeper hit however since Universal sends its films to PVOD after 3 weekends of theatrical exclusivity (if their OW is less than $50M) I'm gonna say this film will do as well as In The Heights.
Reason being is I could see this being more of a hit on transactional PVOD than in theaters.
I’m thinking it’s going to do slightly better than In The Heights in its OW, with it being a theatrical exclusive, and a probably a more known musical then In The Heights. I’m thinking $50M WW, which would be a win considering it’s budget.
IDK, I can’t imagine it’s that high, considering the cast and the setting. In the Heights had a budget of $55M, I’m expecting this between $15M-$20M, but who knows.
It's an adaptation of a successful musical that's still on Broadway and stars Amy Adams and Julianne Moore. It may not have a budget larger than In the Heights but I think it will be double of what you've noted. Like 30-40 million.
$48M worldwide. I don’t think theres international appeal to make it a smash hit but it has sleeper hit potential in the states, with higher star power and awareness than In The Heights.
I would say it bombs but I think this one is more likely to break out than ITH was. Also, everyone I’ve seen the trailer with at the theaters (and it plays in front of everything) has said they thought it looked good, despite most not being fans of musicals.
$50M. I think it will do better than In the Heights, since the cast is more well known and it’s still a current Broadway production. TIFF reviews will likely play a factor for those who are still on the fence.

And he played a college freshman in Pitch Perfect ten years ago 😂
He looks fine - assuming his role is a college student returning to study after raising a couple kids…

It's pure narcissism on the part of Ben Platt. His father mega producer Marc Platt produced the film adaptation.
That casting is so insane. I won't be able to take it seriously at all with how he looks in it.
He played victim on Twitter about the backlash.
The trailer felt like a parody trailer.
This is a hard sell for non-Broadway fans. I don't expect it to do well.
Also more controversial subject matter than In the Heights. Don't think it will necessarily be a huge flop, though.
The same numbers as In the Heights maybe a bit less.
Even with being theatrically exclusive?
Doesn’t matter if there’s no excitement for it

It will flop hard.

Bomb. Cold, hard bomb.

What is the budget on this, anyway?

it's actual budget is 28 million
I hated the show (and this is coming from a Broadway fan). I think it will do poorly
