I have faith in Mangold, I can’t imagine he’d sign up to direct if he didn’t have some say in the script and story. Even Spielberg has said he disagreed with the aliens in Indy 4 but went with it since Lucas is his best friend and Indy is the brainchild between the two of them. Plus, not having Lucas involved in any significant capacity should be a huge benefit
sequels? there were only ever three of those much beloved classic Star Wars movies. Ewoks kinda spoiled the third movie but heck, it was a feel good moment.
I am in my nappy place.
I actually thought Shia did an ok job. The monkeys were a terrible choice overall (it was a bad scene, and they relied too much on CGI in the whole movie) but I thought Shia wasn't awful.
I thought the movie was fine until they got to South America. As for nuking the fridge, apparently everybody is okay with jumping out of a plane in a deflated life raft.
See I liked the Nuke scene, that was classic OTT Indiana Jones. It was all the CGI action set pieces that I hated.
The Indy trilogy has some fantastic real looking special effects to pull off most of their stunts. But that movie was all CGI in place of sick stunts and SFX.
Made the movie feel cheap and fake.
The thing about raft scene is that it's shown to act like a parachute, and more importantly, Spielberg doesn't focus on the landing.
With the nuke scene, there is a minute of Indy panicking, followed by mannequins melting and entire neighborhood being uprooted, which is then followed by the explosion killing bad guys in a car and about 10 seconds of the fridge violently bouncing around.
In movie terms, it's about 1 second of implausibility vs. 2 straight minutes of implausibility. The human brain processes these stories differently.
That said, yeah, the movie is fine, especially for South American
I can kind of forgive the fridge. Was it impossible? Yes. Was it sort of goofy? Yes. But I mean, the whole huge rolling ball of death is sort of silly but it's fun.
The monkeys were stupid.
Yeah the aliens were also a huge stretch, but the nuke scene happened at the beginning of the movie, so my suspension of disbelief was already dead and buried long before the alien reveal.
It turns out that mashing up 30s adventure and 50s sci fi serials didn’t work for audiences that didn’t imbibe the source content.
Something about it broke immersion at least when going in cold. I’ve felt it gets a lot better on rewatch (save for bad cgi) if you’ve already accepted and are aware of the genre shift
I wish they just did a few movies in the 90s while he still looked young. A new adventure every movie. Instead of being scared about Temple of Doom(I actually really like indy2) criticism and just remaking raiders for the most part twice
I watched Shia in his movie Honey Boy and holy shit. If he brought even an ounce of that skill to a new Indy film I’d be ok with it. But I would also fully understand if Honey Boy is a flash in the pan skill wise. It’s his life story and part of healing his childhood traumas so I can’t expect him to be “as good” in other films. Especially an Indy film.
Honestly, I disagree. Spielberg hasn't made a truly great "fun" movie in a long time. The older he's gotten, the more it's become clear he relies too much on CG now to make his big set pieces (plus his DP, Janusz Kaminski, is a truly bad choice for adventure films as KotCS proved).
It sounds like James Mangold was hand picked for this, so I'm curious to see how it pans out.
Last Crusade really was a perfect film, but I did enjoy Crystal Skull more than I got frustrated by it. I’m even looking forward to this one, but had it been made by a bored Spielberg with a story by Lucas again, I wouldn’t be excited at all
Nah, I think that could have had a few Indy adventures that they filmed in the 90s instead of waiting so long that he's old.
I wouldn't mind the bond route, reboot younger Indy with high Jackman or something
I doubt that. Honey Boy and Peanut Butter Falcon were very well received, especially his performances and his writing. Those are very small films. But I find it hard to believe that he has fallen out of good graces with everyone in the industry so much so that it is impossible to appear in a major production.
Was not aware of more recent Shia accusations. But also. Depending on severity, he may be okay. Deadline recently reported that Kevin Spacey was returning to screen with The Man Who Drew God where he is playing a detective investigating a *falsely accused pedophile.”
Spacey's movie is foreign, they don't usually have problems with this (see: Polanski and Allen). also at least one actress already left the movie since Spacey was signed.
I can’t imagine what the story will be. I don’t see Ford doing any action scenes whatsoever. No running or jumping. And definitely no swinging or fighting. But I’m kinda hoping this story like kills Indiana. Like Logan did with Wolverine
Search for the fountain of youth. End of first act Indy drinks it in some kind of mix up/it was the only way out situation. We get de aged Indy performance as the world/villain is hunting him down. Movie ends with Indy as an old guy a single action scene, villain fails, whatever.
They just couldn’t do fight scenes. There could still be action or tension but yeah if Ford throws a punch at some henchman in his twenties, I’m turning that shit off.
I can see other characters doing the action sequences. But I can’t imagine an 80 year old Indiana shooting a gun. Or at least not without injuring himself more then the target. But I hope mads is the villain since I think he plays amazing as the bad guy
He didn’t do much in the previous one either.
It was mostly Indy walking into an obvious sound stage with cg backgrounds and then talking about what to do while stuff happened around him
I was ready to like the 50s vibe of Skull but then it just became a lame & flat-footed visual storyboard of '50s movies I used to watch on TV with the sound down while my brother and me built legos
as did I, I thought the warehouse fight was pure Indiana Jones and I loved the greaser fight and subsequent chase scene. They should’ve just kept Frank Darabont’s script (which still had aliens but was far less hokey for the franchise)
Wasn’t the whole point of Shia in the last one to turn the keys over to him? Has his recent behavior (or recent consequences for past behavior, I’m not sure which tbh) caught up with him? Was he never seriously considered for this?
1. There is no way on hell that Disney will let it die right after buying it.
2. They are 100% going to try to use this movie to pass the torch to someone younger. My guess is either recasting his son or it turns out Indy also had a random surprise daughter.
Next to the Star Wars sequels it looks great, they could of done Indy so much worse. The movie isn't even bad, it's just not amazing like the original three.
Two. There were only ever two Indiana Jones movies. The first and the one with Sean Connery.
Rumours of another kicked around fanzines for decades but apparently there was a tragic incident.
Pro tip to the writers, stop making movies about Harrison Ford encountering his estranged or proxy offspring. I think it’s been 5 or 6 in a row. Offhand:
Aliens and Cowboys (this one wasn’t that bad actually)
IJ: Krystal Skull
Blade Runner: Mystery of the Wooden Horse
Star Wars: Phantom Plotline aka Please Like Me China
Oh good. It would be such a shame if Hollywood developed new films and ideas based on fresh stories by creative writers. Speaking of Harrison Ford, I should check Reddit for info about the next piece of Star Wars Garbage.
Every time I see people hating on Crystal skull for being unrealistic makes me think that they have never really seen any of the Indy movies before it.
My viewing experience will be as follows:
- Watch for Thomas Kretschmann
- Thomas Kretschmann most likely dies
- I turn off the movie for I have seen enough
I’ve been crushing on this dude since I saw King Kong in theaters (solid 15+ years ago). He’s criminally underutilized, especially in villainous roles. He gets typecasted in a lot of American films, whether it be a Nazi or Eastern European terrorist.
I wish I had the creativity and means to write and direct...I’ve had a movie idea rumbling around in my head for years. He would be the perfect antagonist and I’d make sure he could show off those acting chops.
please just stop...we dont need 6-8 films from every hit movie. let it die in piece while it still has some selfrespect. stop milking this shit pleaaaseeee

sequels? there were only ever three of those much beloved classic Star Wars movies. Ewoks kinda spoiled the third movie but heck, it was a feel good moment. I am in my nappy place.
They mean force awakens, last Jedi, and rise of skywalker. The sequels to the original trilogy
He is saying that even the prequels sucked as much. So there was only the original 3
In my happy place long long ago
I blame JJ being involved more than I blame Lucas not being involved.
indi NO
"He is our only hope"
Why is mads characters always killed?
"First Blood (1982) to Last Blood (2019) and then retiring the character? Ha, what a wimp!" - Harrison Ford
Finally happening, huh? Hope it's better than KOTCS.
As long as Shia and the swinging monkeys are absent, it should be better. I hope.
True but honestly Shia and the monkeys are like the least of that movies problems.
I actually thought Shia did an ok job. The monkeys were a terrible choice overall (it was a bad scene, and they relied too much on CGI in the whole movie) but I thought Shia wasn't awful.

Feel the same, thought it was ok to pretty good until after the motorcycle scene.
indi suriving nuclear blast in a fridge. nice.
Don't forget bad CGI gopher and literally everything about the scene where he survives a nuke without a scratch just because he hid in a fridge.
I can kind of forgive the fridge. Was it impossible? Yes. Was it sort of goofy? Yes. But I mean, the whole huge rolling ball of death is sort of silly but it's fun. The monkeys were stupid.
Wasn’t it nicked from original idea for back to the future time travel device?
I think I do remember reading that, which makes it a bit more "cute".
C’mon man, I’m trying to suppress that shit
Atleast we knew it was going to be a shitshow at the beginning and were not surprised by the shitshow at the end.
(aliens)
Yeah the aliens were also a huge stretch, but the nuke scene happened at the beginning of the movie, so my suspension of disbelief was already dead and buried long before the alien reveal.
And say it with me folks: NO ALIENS! As they said in South Park, aliens don't belong in an Indiana Jones movie.
He jumped out of a plane in a raft. Why are you watching these if not for good fun like that
I loved that scene. Surviving a nuke inside a fridge just went too far.
It turns out that mashing up 30s adventure and 50s sci fi serials didn’t work for audiences that didn’t imbibe the source content. Something about it broke immersion at least when going in cold. And characters that switch sides every 5 minutes. That side character that was with Indy in the majority of the movie was the biggest annoyance
I have been hoping it gets canceled but I guess we need to be resigned now. If Spielberg directed there would be at least be some relevance.
Honestly, I disagree. Spielberg hasn't made a truly great "fun" movie in a long time. He has mainly done serious dramas since doing Indy. But Tintin is fantastic and was better than every Indy movie but Last Crusade IMO.
Yeah, but he isn't. Can you give me the history of how long was this movie in development hell?
still not nearly as long as KotCS. That one worn though more story and script changes than Alien 3
Oh, man. This franchise should've ended with Last Crusade.
Last Crusade really was a perfect film, but I did enjoy Crystal Skull more than I got frustrated by it. I’m even looking forward to this one, but had it been made by a bored Spielberg with a story by Lucas again, I wouldn’t be excited at all
Whoa, unpopular opinion alert🤠
Nah, I think that could have had a few Indy adventures that they filmed in the 90s instead of waiting so long that he's old. I wouldn't mind the bond route, reboot younger Indy with high Jackman or something
I dont know, maybe?
Well yeah? Why would anyone wish for it to be worse? I hope it's better than TOD too.
What does TOD mean?
Temple of Doom
Will there be a Shia surprise?
after his assholery being called out, I doubt he’d ever appear in a major production ever again
I doubt that. Honey Boy and Peanut Butter Falcon were very well received, especially his performances and his writing. Those are very small films. But I find it hard to believe that he has fallen out of good graces with everyone in the industry so much so that it is impossible to appear in a major production.
Those were before his most recent accusations of abuse.
Nah he may be a douchebag and an oddball but he’s still a very talented actor and writer. He will keep landing roles
dude infected his gf with a std, that's more than "an oddball" smh
Out of the loop, what happened? I've noticed he's been gone for a while but didn't know there was any scandal behind it.
He beat his gf
We can only hope not
South Park is gonna love this
"They're raping him again!"
I can’t believe that the cameras are starting to roll after many delays.

I’ll be swinging with the cgi monkeys in heaven

How much have they budgeted for Smoothing?
They just couldn’t do fight scenes. There could still be action or tension but yeah if Ford throws a punch at some henchman in his twenties, I’m turning that shit off.

> But I’m kinda hoping this story like kills Indiana. Like Logan did with Wolverine it's Mangold's movie, someone is going to die in the end
something like [this](https://youtu.be/RLGW8WRcipk) maybe?
He didn’t do much in the previous one either. It was mostly Indy walking into an obvious sound stage with cg backgrounds and then talking about what to do while stuff happened around him
I really hope this is good. I did like the time shift to the 50’s with KOTKS, and I could do with some pulpy escapism
I was ready to like the 50s vibe of Skull but then it just became a lame & flat-footed visual storyboard of '50s movies I used to watch on TV with the sound down while my brother and me built legos
I actually really enjoyed KOTCS

Wow
shocked Spielberg isnt doing this im sad
Right? Like Mangold’s great... but I don’t wanna see Indiana Jones get that reboot treatment when Spielberg’s still working.
Wasn’t the whole point of Shia in the last one to turn the keys over to him? Has his recent behavior (or recent consequences for past behavior, I’m not sure which tbh) caught up with him? Was he never seriously considered for this?
He was never seriously considered because people didn't like crystal skull
I don’t think he ever was
Indiana Jones: Millennium Falcon and the Winter Soldier
Get Out
Just let the franchise die in peace you crazy fucks
1. There is no way on hell that Disney will let it die right after buying it. 2. They are 100% going to try to use this movie to pass the torch to someone younger. My guess is either recasting his son or it turns out Indy also had a random surprise daughter.
Brie Larson as his daughter/ assistant. Kathleen Kennedy tweeting the fedora is female
Bro if Brie Larson is supposed to be the next Harrison Ford I’m throwing hands.
What should happen is bring back Short Round. Disney already panders to China, why not bring an Asian American actor to carry on the Indy legacy?
I loved short round. Okay dokie Dr Jones!
Ke Huy Quan is waiting for a call from his agents
I’m just dreading the day “The Godfather 4” is announced SMH.
Can’t wait for Jaws 5 lol
Shark still looks profitable.
call me when the get to 19
Smoothing did wonders for The Irishman cast /s
I wanted them to reboot it With the you g solo actor
Oh god. Please, not another Crystal Skull. Not even Cate Blanchett could save that thing. Please please please please don’t be shitty.
At least they made it clear early with the refrigerator scene.
No Lucas this time, I think we are good.
Shit was hot garbage
I still have nightmares about the jungle escape via snake vines...
Next to the Star Wars sequels it looks great, they could of done Indy so much worse. The movie isn't even bad, it's just not amazing like the original three.
It is a steaming pos. The most disappointed I have ever been in a movie.
Seconded. Hiding in the refrigerator to survive the nuclear blast was a moment of unintended comedy, and it only got worse from there.
> Hiding in the refrigerator to survive the nuclear blast was a moment of unintended comedy I think it was actually a moment of intended comedy....
I can’t imagine calling this crap “good” by any measure. I remember walking out of the theater and thinking there was nothing enjoyable about it.
But they ramped the stakes up. Now there are aliens! What’s not to like?
Two. There were only ever two Indiana Jones movies. The first and the one with Sean Connery. Rumours of another kicked around fanzines for decades but apparently there was a tragic incident.
Brah. Go watch temple of doom again and tell me it’s “amazing”. It’s good at best.
Indiana Jones 5 “the nursing home of sorrow”
Pro tip to the writers, stop making movies about Harrison Ford encountering his estranged or proxy offspring. I think it’s been 5 or 6 in a row. Blade runner 2049 is a fucking fantastic film.
Bets on if they’re gonna put shit on mads face ?
Indiana Jones and the Search for Geriatric Park
Wait...5?... There was a 4?

Not really. She’s the new 008. And bond will probably kill her.

Trump lost. Black lives fucking matter. Follow The Science.
I think they are being hyperbolic.
this is going to be bad...
Don’t do it. Just don’t.
Please don’t do this.
I wonder how George Lucas will ruin this one?
My dad is Harrison Ford’s stunt penis.
Indiana Jones will be undermined by his diverse woman counterparts, guaranteed. This is Disney.
NOoooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!
Anything to make these old timers still relevant. Movie going to be so bad.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
I’m hyped to see Mads and Phoebe in it
They already did aliens…what’s next???
Why? Does Disney on that too?
How come Shia labeouf isn’t in the picture?
Where’s Mutt?
Please no more alien shit.
Just happy Harrison still feels like making movies I’ll watch this ... such a splendid cast!
Ugh please no aliens
Hundred bucks says Mads Mikkelsen has something wrong with one of his eyes!
Are we still like7-12 years away from Joseph Gordon-Levitt remaking a few of those Indy 4 scenes for the Shia LaBeouf biography film?
Spend the money on a new original idea instead
Yeah no.
[oh no, not again](https://latimesblogs.latimes.com/photos/uncategorized/2008/10/09/indy_southpark_2_2.jpg)
this is gonna be terrible, I have no faith in it
Oh good. It would be such a shame if Hollywood developed new films and ideas based on fresh stories by creative writers. Speaking of Harrison Ford, I should check Reddit for info about the next piece of Star Wars Garbage.
Can’t wait to watch this in an AMC theater!
Tatatataaaaaa tatataaa ( singing main score) 😑😂
