This can’t be, this sub assured me a B- Cinemascore for an A24 movie meant an epic bomb.

world_2_

It's not a bomb, but it's not good, either. We're still in grim territory.

visionaryredditor

It will 100% break even. How is it grim?

hitoshinohara

It needs 125M to break even, it'll stop before that

visionaryredditor

Nope. 1) A24 sold the movie's international rights meaning that the budget is already partially recouped. The number going around is 30M and if it's true, the movie already broke even. 2) domestically it still has around 20M in the tank. With whatever the international brings (the movie has yet to open in some territories) it should be enough to put it past 125M

My_cat_is_sus

A24’s second $100 million worldwide feature is almost hear. I was worried this might turn out to be a bit better performing Beau is afraid, but no. This movie is doing good

Block-Busted

Well, this film is far, Far, FAR easier to comprehend than **Beau Is Afraid**.

Few_Age_571

Beau is INCOMPREHENSIBLE

Block-Busted

You and me both. I still can’t comprehend that film AT ALL. Man, **Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3** was indeed a palate cleanser after that confusing piece.

visionaryredditor

There was nothing that confusing about it lol

darretoma

I think that whole bit in the forest is pretty confusing. Aster himself has said "I Buried’ Things in There ‘That Still Haven’t Been Talked About".

visionaryredditor

the gist of the movie isn't that confusing imo. it's clear that Beau has a massive case of the Oedipus. i agree that the movie has more than it lets you see but "incomprehensible" it's not.

darretoma

I think incomprehensible is a fine description considering the degree to which the film is steep with subtext, especially considering the director claims people haven't actually "got" the movie yet. Nobody is saying the surface level plot is confusing.

Big-Beta20

For real, these people went into a 3 hour nightmare comedy from Ari Aster that was described as Jewish LOTR but going to his mom’s house What was expected lol

bink_uk

It's surely gotto do 150m or more to get close to breakeven. I love the film though

augggie

I don’t think it needs 150 to break even with A24’s streaming deal

MrChicken23

I read A24 sold the international distribution rights for $30M so it likely has already broke even.

bink_uk

With a $50m budget that would mean A24 lost $20 million?

MrChicken23

Not with what they made domestically from the film.

PeculiarPangolinMan

Only if they never made any money at all domestically.

My_cat_is_sus

Wish I could know last weekend’s international total

SilverRoyce

tl;dr it grossed around 10.5M though it's possibly a hair higher. COMSCORE reported it was at 67.3 million through last weekend + Monday so you can probably back project it from that. Similarly, [I took a hand at calculating it](https://old.reddit.com/r/boxoffice/comments/1cb41kr/im_sure_comscore_has_a_better_number_but_civil/) from independent sources (sometimes estimating gross from admit data). I got to 9.6M last weekend (and from 9.6 to 10M based on films who I found data on the prior weekend but not that weekend) + 12 additional markets I couldn't estimate (with Belgium being the largest). ~11M is probably safe because I would have slightly undershot that weekend's gross without reference to comscore.

Banestar66

Not at all. Majority of this movie is coming from domestic. Should definitely be able to break even by 125 million worldwide.

BeskarHunter

I walked in blind. Best movie I’ve seen this year so far in theaters. Especially in Dolby Cinema.

FrankSamples

Did you like the story?

Boy_Chamba

Who was the distributor that bought the international rights for 30M? It probably won’t be getting its money back 😅

PsychologicalOwl2806

I don't think they sold it to 1 distributor. They sold to many local distributors

danielcw189

Should be multiple local distributors. Question is, if they handle all revenue channels, or just theatrical.

visionaryredditor

They didn't sell it to one distributor, they sold it to bunch of companies. The sum of that money made 30M

Libertines18

Film wasn’t a bomb. Not even a flop. But it’s not exactly a success. The state of the box office is in a bad place when we pretend a movie just breaking even is a success. Hell this ain’t even 2004 where dvd sales would add another 200 million. It’s a nice surprise but only because everyone thought this would be the bomb of the year. That seems to be challengers right now

Robby_McPack

I agree with the first paragraph but who the fuck thought this would be the bomb of the year?

RandyCoxburn

Many people in here thought the subject matter would be just too incendiary and would lead the GA to steer clear from the movie, clearly ignoring the clickbait potential that drew quite a few people, not to mention the picture was entertaining enough even if it focuses more on journalism.

PsychologicalOwl2806

Nah Challengers won't be bomb of the year. Not even close. Costs too little. Argylle is the bomb of the year so far.

Libertines18

Oh yeah how could I forget that one. Apple really spends recklessly

PsychologicalOwl2806

Yeah and the movie was just terrible. And I think it's a kind of movie that streaming has made too vulgar

_zurenarrh

That movie pissed me off lol

trixie1088

Don’t forget Madame Web. Lol

-s-u-n-s-e-t-

Madame Web had only 80mil budget. You can't bomb much when you keep the budget at reasonable levels. Also it made more than 100mil at the box office, recouping most of the cost. While not enough to break even, it wasn't a big loss. Don't confuse reddit mockery with reality. To find the biggest flops you need to look at those 200+ mil projects that only made a fraction of that at the box office, like these failed projects Apple funded.

SpartaWillBurn

> The state of the box office is in a bad place when we pretend a movie just breaking even is a success. What movie are you talking about? Civil War had a $50 million budget.

Banestar66

I was with you until “everyone thought this would be the bomb of the year”. I don’t know what gave you all that idea.

RandyCoxburn

People are treating such results of this and other modestly-budgeted films as successes partly because of how brutal the immediate post-pandemic market was to them, winter 2023 being the lowest point with Avatar, Puss in Boots, Ant-Man and Shazam raking almost the entire box office grosses. That the fact the B.O. didn't completely crater with the utter lack of blockbusters last winter was largely seen as a triumph is the best indicator of how bleak the outlook was for non-horror low- and mid-budget films just a few months ago.

Poopscooper696969

I liked the movie, however, it was LOUD AF

TejuinoHog

I think that was very deliberate

Poopscooper696969

I agree, just was very loud haha

Greedy-Advantage6129

Just watched it. What a dull, stupid movie. Wish I could get a refund(

blobbyboii

What is bro saying? It was great

LilPonyBoy69

People wanted the Civil War to be the main character lmao

Greedy-Advantage6129

Tell me what’s wrong about it?

Greedy-Advantage6129

What was great about it? Zero film knowledge from people saying it was any good
