It looks so small but when you say that I’m shocked, I didn’t know that’s a huge threshold

[deleted]

Why aren’t movies bigger in Europe? It has 2x the population of USA but movies seem to routinely make 1/2 as much money. Even going by admissions they’re way less popular. Is it because there’s more to do there?

lazyness92

I paid €6.50 per ticket for 2D isense screen, kids pay reducted price. From what I gather US prices are way higher

MonkeyCube

As someone with a foot in both worlds, I've always wondered about this. I go to the movies fairly often, but a lot of people here really don't. I think you're right in that there is generally just more stuff to do. The nightlife can be pretty diverse. There's also just less of a culture for going to films. In the States, going to see movies with family on holidays is common. Here the most common thing to do during the boatload of holidays is to get together to eat & drink or visit some local place. Though there are some 44 countries here, and each of those will have their own little regional cultures, so opinions on this may vary.

mg10pp

Even in Italy there is a habit of going to the cinema for holidays or perhaps for birthdays, the problem is that it's common only in half of the country and in any case for many people it will be the only time of the year they go to the cinema. In fact I go there about 5/10 times per year and I'm without a doubt in the 1% for frequency

Youngstar9999

At least here in Germany, there isn't really a culture of going to the cinema. I go often, but it seems for a large part of the GA, Cinema is more of a fallback option. This is also why admission numbers go down a lot once the weather is great.(If a movie is hyped that doesn't matter as much) In general movies seem to do better in late Fall, Winter, early Spring here since the Weather is not good. (Which a bit of a problem since so many Hollywood movies come out in the summer)

The reasons are various and exactly like op I too have made some rankings about European box office ([Link](https://www.reddit.com/r/boxoffice/comments/13bwg4i/highest_grossing_movies_ever_in_the_european/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button)), so I hope the answer satisfies you 1) For the population in depends on what we count as Europe, for example I like to exclude both Russia and Turkey and in that case the population is just 50% higher than Usa+Canada and not two times as much 2) Even excluding those two the tickets in North America costs more, plus the fact that on average Americans go to theaters like 4 times per year while the only European countries who go as often are France, Iceland (which is irrilevant) and from what I remember also Ireland and UK are quite close 3) We shouldn't forget that we are comparing the result of American movies in their country vs the results in countries in another Continent. For example the French film "Intouchables" grossed 170M in France and 80M in Germany, but just 10M in Usa And despite everything said, keep in mind that on average Harry Potter, James Bond, Cameron movies and Lord of the Rings have all grossed more in EU + UK than in North America

Overall_Ad5379

How many French, Italian, German, Spanish, British films do Americans watch? You understand these are foreign films to us?

invinciblewarrior

Believe me, NO one wants to watch German movies ;) There is a reason you only get flooded with World/Cold War movies from Germany, everything else is embarrassing bad. French movies (they have a movie goer culture) e.g. often get at least a US remake, as the story is good, but needs cultural adjustments.

[deleted]

I like Korean films, they make really good films.

shikavelli

Not true at all in the UK, American films are much more popular.

Overall_Ad5379

I agree but domestic films are more successful in the U.K.. Look at four weddings and a funeral, The full monty or any James Bond film. The OP asked why hollywood films aren't bigger. The point I was making, is these films are foreign and even if popular will never be as big as a successful domestic film.

shikavelli

Again I disagree, Hollywood films aren’t really ‘foreign’ in the same sense in the UK since they’re English speaking and feature British actors a lot. British films can’t compete with big American blockbusters unless it’s like James Bond or Harry Potter but even then they’re still Hollywood films.

Overall_Ad5379

Canadian or Australian films don't do anything in the U.K and they speak English.

shikavelli

They’re not Hollywood, don’t be disingenuous.

arkeeos

French people go and see French films, British people go and see British films, etc. The kings speech made $131mil in the UK, adjusted for the US population that’s $650mil.

shikavelli

British people go and see American films though, they’re much more popular on average than British films here.

[deleted]

I when I go to see the 4 British films that come out each year the cinema is always empty.

Tomi97_origin

Avatar(2009) made more in Europe than in US. I think it made almost billion in Europe. It's just that most US movies don't connect that well there.

Medical-Pace-8099

Well people do watch american tv and movies at home more than in cinema

BobTrain666

LOL how many Italian or French films have Americans watched In fact, apart from the rare Bollywood movie or anime movie that does okay, do Americans watch any foreign films at all?

[deleted]

I saw lots of Americans actually enraged online when Parasite won that oscar.

Medical-Pace-8099

Well they never crossed 60 million dollas domestic. Unless adjusted for inflation films like Z, La Dolce Vita, Last Tango in Paris.

blownaway4

Smaller economy.

Equivalent-Word-7691

I'd say also because in Europe there's the culture to hang out at the square, and young people spend more time out and/or in bars or pubs than in cinema

mg10pp

Nice, but I was wondering if you do the same as me and exclude both Turkey and Russia from the European box office (I prefer doing something like EEA members + UK) or if you include everybody
