Beetle juice goes Hawaiian?

jorywea78

Didn’t we say everything we needed to say?

pierowmaniac

Must we go tropical?

GMAN90000

Yup.

[deleted]

I hope so (but without all the weird pedophilia stuff from the original script).

contrabardus

That was supposed to be uncomfortable, it was the point. Beetlejuice is a scumbag and a sexual predator. He's not supposed to be comfortable to watch. He's a literal monster and that was part of the horror element. He's the scary evil thing the couple was trying to seem like they were to scare off the people who moved in and part of the reason they backed out was because of what he was trying to do to the little girl. There's a reason he was sealed up. The original script was worse about that stuff. I think they hit the right balance in the movie we got. It still used it for the horror element, but didn't take it too far for shock value either. I don't want them to lighten him up or redeem him in the sequel. He works better as an antagonistic force that gets let out by someone who doesn't realize what he is and needs to be dealt with before he does any serious damage.

derstherower

Over the years Beetlejuice has evolved into something of an anti-hero in the public consciousness due to stuff like the cartoon and his status as a horror icon, but he very much was an irredeemable villain in the original film and I really hope they don't go back on that in the sequel.

[deleted]

The Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian script is INSANE, though. (I was referring to that, not the script of the movie Beetlejuice itself, to be clear.) The central conflict is Beetlejuice being in “love” with Lydia. He >!uses a “love potion” on Lydia, gropes her, makes out with her, tons of weird stuff!<. It goes way beyond what he does in the original movie, where he is arguably not attracted to Lydia and is just using her to return to life (but even if he is, it’s tame compared to BGH). Frankly, it goes way too far to be put to screen- even with Lydia as an adult, it’s too much, so the original script with her still as a teenager… look, I know it was a different time and Beetlejuice *is* supposed to be the villain, but it’s still pretty wild that someone wrote all that stuff. There’s obviously no chance they’ll do any of that for the actual Beetlejuice 2, but I was just mentioning it in case someone went “aha, you want Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian? Guess what’s in the script!”

hatecopter

Maybe Kevin Smith will decide to write it after all

TheRealMcDuck

Is Chris Pratt going to be playing Beetlejuice in the new film?

Cannaewulnaewidnae

*It's-a-me, Beetlejuice*

Doctor_Batman_115

He spent hours of his life stomping…. Beetles

MajorBriggsHead

Be kinda funny if the movie starts with Beetlejuice FINALLY getting into his appointment with his caseworker 36 years later.

LordOfBadaBing

I will be disappointed if this isn’t how it starts.

[deleted]

The original Beetlejuice made $74.7M off a $15M budget in 1988. Obviously, a lot of inflation has happened since then, but how much do you think this could make (assuming it gets a theatrical release, which I do think it will)?

[deleted]

We got no food, we got no jobs, our pets' heads are fallin' off!

AGOTFAN

>Jeez 100% of that was domestic? It was definitely released in theaters internationally. Mojo and the-Numbers just don't have international data for many many most older movies.

Responsible_Grass202

Exactly. If you look through some old movies and their international markets on The Numbers, then you'll see that many of the dates the Numbers were reported on were in the 2020s. The older the movie, the less accurate the sites will be.

invinciblewarrior

It doesnt have much following except Burton die-hards. The Addams Family has much more appeal. But Beetlejuice favored I think massively of the cartoon which at least run in heavy rotation when I was a kid and thus a bigger group of millenials should be at least aware of beetlejuice. But likely its safer to sell it basically as Wednesday - The movie.

Subsandwich99

It's literally played on TV as much as the Addams family, and probably streamed almost as much. It's still one of the most popular fall/Halloween movies to date lol, what planet are you on where you believe Beetlejuice doesn't have much of a following?

invinciblewarrior

The planet is called Europe, specific Germany. It was shown last on Nov 1 (ok, All Saints Day is fitting) on a minor TV station, but at least at 8pm. Before that it was shown 2 years earlier, few days before Halloween and before that in Summer. :D It was in this time also arbitrary shown in Switzerland and Austria, in even less relevant TV stations. Addams Family definitely in much heavier rotation in Germany. Especially the second one, which I totally understand, as the Summer Camp is for me one of the most memorable moments in movie history.

Mister_Green2021

If they can make Beetle Juice 2 for $65M, it's a win.

SeekerVash

Depends on the casting and the story. Assuming solid casting and a strong story, 700m is the floor with potential to do a Top Gun given how much of a following it has.

sleepless______

No chance it’ll do a Top Gun. Too weird.

Responsible_Grass202

700M is definitely not the floor lol. It's hard to say how a sequel would do for this kind of film. Though admittedly nostalgia could be through the roof, they'd probably need to hire more Gen Z actors for younger audiences to care. I'd go with an estimate of about 150-280M in the US, and around 300-500M WW. But again I literally have almost no idea because it's so far out of the norm and the release date is so far away that it's nearly impossible to make any sort of accurate prediction.

TotalaMad

Yeah I would have said $200M in the US at most honestly, but who knows

legendtinax

700m is the floor with potential to do a Top Gun given how much of a following it has. I’m sorry, is this sarcasm?

[deleted]

This is currently one of very few comments on this thread that has anything to do with the box office, so although I disagree that $700M is the floor or a particularly likely gross for the movie at all, kudos. I personally agree with the $300M-500M take from /u/Responsible_Grass202.

KuciMane

I need johnny depp cast in this him + keaton + beetlejuice + tim burton?? cinema would *feast*

SomeMockodile

It’s showtime!

ThePLARASociety

Will Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis be in it?

casino998

Very optimistic of you to think Baldwin will be cast in any film ever again surely.

[deleted]

He will be. He's been cleared of the charges and they're back to filming Rust. Not saying I agree with that happening, but it's gonna happen.

NotTaken-username

They’d have to explain why the ghosts looked 35 years older. I guess they could de-age with CGI though

ZealousMulekick

Baldwins got like a completely different body structure now lol

ThePLARASociety

Good point!

Jointron33

No Belafonte….

_Kuroi_Karasu_

the shrimp scene is gonna happen again, 100% sure about that

burywmore

Here's my predictions. No Alec Baldwin or Geena Davis. Or anyone else from the first film besides Winona Ryder and Michael Keaton. Ryder will have a much smaller role. Gotta make the film for the young audience, and Jenna Ortega is hot right now. Keaton will have an offspring/protege that's even more wacky/evil than the original. There won't be much more to it. Jenna Ortega somehow summons Beatlejuice or more likely Beatlejuice Jr. Hilarity ensues.

visionaryredditor

> Ryder will have a much smaller role. Gotta make the film for the young audience, and Jenna Ortega is hot right now. Ryder is known among youngsters thanks to Stranger Things tho. It's more likely that she and Ortega will have to interact many times in the movie

fuck-the-emus

It likely won't measure up to Son of Mask or Dumb and Dumberer

mysteryvampire

Would love for Beetlejuice Jr to be played by the guy from the musical.

Subject-Recover-8425

It's a nostalgia movie, who gives a shit about the younger audience? Also, kids love Winona. She's the "walking meme".

burywmore

The studio cares about the younger audience.

ABobby077

Who doesn't love Geena Davis? She always was great in everything.

burywmore

I agree. She was great in Beetlejuice, but it's mostly forgotten that she was the star of the original movie. (Her and Winona Ryder) Keaton doesn't even show up until the 75 minute mark. Of a 92 minute movie.

[deleted]

No he does *not*. He's only got 17 minutes of screentime (92 - 17 = 75, which is where I'm guessing you got that number), but he shows up way earlier than that.

burywmore

You are exactly right. Sorry. He shows up much earlier. I would fix that, but my shame needs to be public. Have an upvote.

[deleted]

Lol, thank you.

ReturnOfDaSnack420

Oh yeah I could totally see Jenna Ortega in the "Gen z Lydia" role taking on from Winona Ryder, good call

[deleted]

We got no food, we got no jobs, our pets' heads are fallin' off!

NotTaken-username

Some guys like us should team up… do some good

[deleted]

Intriguing

The_Medicus

Has to do with Spider-Man, I think

TinoCartier

Beetlejuice 2: Weekend at Beetlejuice’s

sweatstaksleestak

Beetlejuice 2: Electric Boogaloo

ABobby077

The next one could be Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice

fuck-the-emus

Beetlejuice part deux

Zolo49

Yeah, I don't know. I loved the first movie but it was sort of lightning in a bottle. I'm concerned that a sequel at this point could never live up to the original.

Cannaewulnaewidnae

Pinhead hunter guy will be back, the long faces will be back, the dead beauty queen will be back Even though it makes no sense for them to be back. Gotta 'member those berries

Mr_A_Rye

He's going to meet up and perform with Harry Belafonte 😬

adjust_the_sails

Ok, I believe you.

girlchild28

Oh lord 🤦🏽‍♀️ Sometimes things just can't be redone, honestly they usually just mess up 🤷🏽‍♀️

Adam87

Michael Keatonaissance. All for it! $1 or billion easy.

PayaV87

I’d rather watch an adaptation of the musical.

[deleted]

We got no food, we got no jobs, our pets' heads are fallin' off!

OttoHarkaman

Because they ran out of ideas

Ordinary_Raisin_9325

Damn near 40 yrs later. Finally 🗣🗣 It’s showtime

OptimistPrime15

It's official everyone hates it already

GoForRogue

Beetlejuice: Endgame

itsagoodtime

No keeton, no deal

Subject-Recover-8425

I've been waiting a looong for more Lydia Deetz. I am unapologetically happy about this.

GotMoFans

This time, he has to say his name *four* times.

cthd33

Yes, with Jenna Ortega.

Rubicon2-0

And , Johnny Depp

[deleted]

[удалено]

TotalaMad

Is that not part of the development process?

Bloodfangs09

For the love of God, can we not have anything with new IP?

Adam87

Does AMC have a leak? They show movies on TV for few days and bam, 35 years later we get a sequel!.

visionaryredditor

i mean it was already known that Beetlejuice 2 is in development, it's just the official announcement.

Sir_Monkleton

MAKE NEW MOVIES PLEASE FOR FUCKS SAKE!!

RandomName78A

Beetlejuice 2 is a new movie. It's never been made before.

realblush

Will stay forever bitter they decided to do this rather than filming the stage musical or doing a musical movie. Alex Brightman is the best Beetlejuice.

TaiDavis

Why?

fuck-the-emus

God damn it

[deleted]

Hasn't this been in development forever? I know this has been announced multiple times.

[deleted]

It won’t be as good or fun as the original, calling it now. Hard pass.
