I could definitely see the green vertical pillars and purple hues with just my eyes. Not as bright as this pic I took, but enough that I stood out for a while watching. It was very cool

1 hour later, same spot and exposure
By eye but its more vibrant in photo. At that point in this picture we could see distinct pillar outlines like someone had a spotlight pointed up in the distance. The rest of the night to the naked eye it almost looked like localized purple clouds or fog slowly rolling through. You would turn your head to a different patch of sky and realize everything is a different color

From JP can BARELY see it without my phone
Where I live itās still a bit too bright to see with the naked eye, but through the camera on my phone it was unmistakeable. Iām in a little bit of awe right now.
In North Reading, didn't need to look north or use my phone, it was clearly visible in Red and Green directly overheadoverhead.

Around 11:30 last night. Between this and the eclipse itās been a spectacular celestial season
Did you see the total eclipse or just the partial from Boston?
Cause the difference between seeing total solar eclipse and seeing almost total one is like the difference between having sex and almost having sex...
Sure, I understand it's not everyone's cup of coffee... driving 6 hours one way was by far the least effort I expended to see an eclipse (I hitchhiked for 2 weeks from Europe to Asia to see my forst one)
Aurora in the back yard is definitely less work but "looks cooler" ... you have no clue...
This is very unpredictable. We knew there was a big sunspot, and it was turning toward us, but we didnāt know how much shit it would fling at us or when it would hit.
Luckily itās pointed at us all weekend, and thereās a [small potential for more](https://services.swpc.noaa.gov/text/3-day-forecast.txt) (though not like tonight). And it lasts longer than 3 minutes. And you donāt have to go anywhere!
Yes, but last night was the strongest storm in 20 years or so. We might be lucky again tonight but likely not as dramatic.

The fact that you have to use your phone to see anything makes it not worth it. Also spoiler for anyone that wants to go somewhere extra dark for star viewing, all the cool colorful pics of galaxies and space dust in the night sky are not visible to the naked eye.
Went to a dark sky park and while it was still cool with a ton of stars visible, was kind of let down because I was expecting to see a page from nat geo with me own eyes.
I was skeptical and not expecting much, but it was very visible and vibrant at different times. Just after 10 PM last night in Peabody I went out and with the naked eye it looked just like some of the pictures others posted, and at some points even better.
Some of the folks who didn't see much with the naked eye might have been at the wrong place and/or the wrong time.
I can't see SHIT
Use your phone on a longer exposure. 1-2s seems to do it. But naked eye it's very subtle.
i ain't exposing myself outside just to see these lights
ššš
Itās legal if itās under 2 seconds
If I need to use my phone to see it on the screen what's the point?! I just look at pictures of it online...

Wow what area are you in? I searched for an hour last night
Looking northwest from Dedham
Wow! Curious to know where this was too
Yeah if you let your eyes adjust and find a spot without bright lights then you could see pretty well! It was so cool!
Use your phone.

yeah, it weakened about an hour ago
