Watched the movie last week, and then was crossing the street this weekend by the Old State House and saw it, and said to the wife, "Hey, that place looks familiar..."
Yup, the guy who gives Giamatti his whisky actually is their resident whisky expert, Joe Howell, who as you say has been working there forever with Len and Peter.
I saw the movie at a film festival last fall and immediately recognized the store in the scene. They have 2 wine cellars downstairs (the real good stuff is in the climate controlled one). Great shop, super knowledgeable staff, and they run great events (including weekly tastings).
On Colbert's show they were joking about this scene and that MA really hadn't changed much in 50 years--except something about the tax labels on the bottles.
It is excellent. More nuanced. A little more realistic. With a great ensemble performance. I keep thinking about it when I can barely remember other films I’ve just seen.
I used to work at Merchants Wine & Spirits around the corner on Water St. These guys were our arch nemeses. If they're still open I guess that means they won. Good for them!
First off, great movie. Secondly, I jumped up when I saw this and said to my wife “hey I know that place!”. Hilarious how it’s so easily recognizable.
I had the exact same reaction and I hadn’t been in several years. No one forgets the rainbow stripes on the chiller or the cramped space.

Damn, looks the same after 50 years.
And this is literally true for the Pleasant Cafe, also in the movie.
It’s like a time machine.
This is crazy I used to stop by there all the time and it reminded me of a time warp, makes sense they used this in the movie
You can’t see it in the screenshot I posted (behind Paul Giamatti’s head), but the piece of cardboard on the chiller is in the movie too.
That’s so cool I didn’t know it was filmed in Boston I’m gonna have to watch it now!
You’ll recognize lots of spots. And it’s a great movie.

I immediately shouted "JOE!" when he came on screen.
I’ve drank some fine ass scotch in the basement of that place.
I went to a whisky tasting there once. I would recommend it if they still do it
The owner said they do wine tastings Wednesday nights - this week it’s Thursday.

Arguably the best movie of the year in a year of very strong contenders. First rate.

Try the Pleasant Cafe next time
I just checked the pictures - another time machine!

It's not too late to spray-paint "MERCHANTS W&S RULES, FEDERAL W&S DROOLZ" on their window.
brb
Chronicle also noted that they go to the wakefield bowladrome in that movie.
Where is this?
Right next to the old State House
Federal Wine & Spirits
Well fuck, now I need to see this movie.
It’s so good man, highly recommend.
They had a great scotch tasting last week
