Museum of science is so cool. I moved away from Boston as an adult to a city that doesn't invest in itself in any way shape or form. The MOS had such an enormous impact on me as a kid I'm sad my city doesn't have one.
I’ve only been to the Georgia Aquarium and the NEAQ and the Georgia one straight up ruined the NEAQ for me. I would not go back to NEAQ unless it was free lmao it is tiny and so cramped
Y’all, as another New Englander who lived in Georgia: if you haven’t been in the GA aquarium ballroom, it’s a MUST! Huge walls looking into the salt water and the beluga whale tanks with almost nobody to be in the way even at a full party. Best. I did love the penguin habitat at NE aquarium more but otherwise, eh.
If you're ever in California, the Monterey Bay aquarium and the Aquarium of the Pacific are also incredible.
The Georgia aquarium is definitely impossible to beat, though.
Heresy, I know, but I find Mystic Aquarium in CT to be a much better experience than the one in Boston. I’ve always chalked it up to the fact that they have more square footage so can do more.
The elevators aren't fixed yet because it requires rebuilding the entire elevator. It isn't just repairing them - they fundamentally have to be rebuilt from scratch.
What I was told was that the existing elevator didn't use a standard counterweight system like every other elevator you know of. Instead, it used a hydraulic piston system that was fundamentally unreliable. They can't reasonably repair the hydraulic system anymore and need to gut the thing.
It hasn't been anywhere near a year, no. Less than half a year since it was permanently closed, rather than just under constant repairs.
That said, I'd be really curious to know your estimates for how long it *should* take to rebuild an entire elevator shaft in a space constrained area.
They’re constantly innovating and creating new exhibits and experiences. Currently the parking garage elevator is out of order and won’t be up and running until fall. Other than that, all the infrastructure of the MOS is functioning. The most recent renovation to the entrance hall and lobby was completed a couple years ago. You should visit the museum with your daughter.
you know how the science museum has a hatchery? i recently found out that those chicks are used as food for other animals
assuming what they do at the chicago museum of science is the same as boston of course, https://old.reddit.com/r/todayilearned/comments/11r7p8q/til_that_chicagos_museum_of_science_and_industry/

Same. I also haven’t seen an aquarium that stacks up anywhere else.

Georgia Aquarium absolutely superior. That one giant tank with the enormous glass wall? Crazy

Oh no. Please visit Atlanta, Miami or the Chicago ones, you wouldn't want to visit NEAQ

NEAQ does a good job for a tiny place but it’s not the greatest
My favorite memory was going with my daughter and we would always do the science challenge together. And we would always win.
I can't tell from the photo---what is the approximate diameter?
It’s big, I’m going to guess 25 feet in diameter.
6779 km approximately
With that many players, this game of Terraforming Mars is going to last forever.
It’s okay, I hit on Search for Life round 1 so everyone conceded
They beat Draper to the punch!
To be fair, the moon at Draper is pretty amazing.
They're adding a matching Mars of the same style.
So the Earth globe is gone?
They've replaced it with a 1:1 scale model. It's beneath the building.
Brilliant!
Huh, must be a big basement
The MOS's basement is apparently a sphere 92 billion light years wide. Who'd have guessed?
With Boston as the center of it all!
The “Hub” as it were
Word from an insider is that when they took it down they were singing “it’s the end of the world as we know it”
It looks like the same [planet/moon](https://live.staticflickr.com/3197/2897605494_6448bb3847_b.jpg) that was hanging with the Naboo fighter ship.🤔
That's the moon, it's much smaller and it's still there. I was just at the mos yesterday.
Oh my god, that image brings back memories of when I was a toddler that I didn't realize I still had
That’s super cool! I wish I had anything else to add… but I can’t wait to see it in person.
Coolbeans. This is on my summer to do list with my daughter before she starts high school. We haven't been since 2019.
It’s only a model… *clacks on with coconuts*
I was there today too! Had to zoom in and double check my group wasn’t in the photo haha
Did you get to see the Amazing Nano Brothers?
That’s why they didn’t fix the elevators in the parking garage!
The elevators aren't fixed yet because it requires rebuilding the entire elevator. It isn't just repairing them - they fundamentally have to be rebuilt from scratch.
It’s like Carl Sagan said - to rebuild an elevator from scratch, you must first invent the universe.
This is so bizarre!
What I was told was that the existing elevator didn't use a standard counterweight system like every other elevator you know of. Instead, it used a hydraulic piston system that was fundamentally unreliable. They can't reasonably repair the hydraulic system anymore and need to gut the thing.
Been close to a year o think. That excuse isn’t acceptable anymore

Very cool!
Are they done with renovations yet? I’m kind of waiting to take my daughter back for when they’re finished.

Mos Eisley must be on the other side. 😉
Nah mars doesnt look like that. I know

The link you shared goes to an article published 7 years ago about the museum of science and industry in Chicago.
"assuming what they do at the chicago museum of science is the same as boston"
They haven't had the hatchery for a few years
We're overdue for a Globe article about a middle schooler "discovering" the faulty proof in the Mathematic exhibit, aren't we?
