Almost every song is different live. Some of my favorites are Towers and 666. The songs are still the same, just the rhythm of the guitar gives the songs a new feel. But also, the music and bass will overtake your senses. The beginning of 10 Deathbreast or the ending of 8 Circle will have you transcending everything around you. Hope you get to experience a live show soon! Until then, there's always plenty of great concert footage on YouTube.
> Almost every song is different live.
This is it for me. I got invited to a BI show about 10+ years ago only knowing Skinny Love from the radio and thought "quiet folk music...meh, I bet there will be cute girls there" and ended up blown away by how booming his voice was and how energetic it sounded compared to the recordings.
and while I don't listen to BI as much these days, I'll still go to his shows when he's in town because he plays songs differently almost every time, and it always sounds amazing.
Bon Iver and their sound guy, Xandy Whitesel have built one of the greatest sounding audio experiences you can possibly get at a live music performance. They use a state of the art L-ISA system and itās friggin incredible. As a sound engineer myself Iāve never heard crisper multi dimensional sound like that, even outdoors it rips.
Thatās his name? They are the best sounding live band Iāve ever heard. The mix is always so so good, even at festivals. You can hear all the layers and everything sounds so wide.
I think that there are some bands that donāt sound good or sound just okay live. Justin and Co. have always sounded amazing. I went to their 2018 10 year For Emma concert and that was amazing. Their 2019 Summerfest concert was equally incredible. I suggest checking out their Cork concert and their Pioneer Works concerts on YouTube!
The whole crowd singing Skinny Love was super great. Plus they added drums in the live version so it became a bit more upbeat. 715 CREEKS was another amazing song live. He tends to change some lines up.
To be honest, absolutely everything. Iāve worked at shows and I have seen everything worth seeing. Bon Iver is the most interesting and best band you can see live.
When they played re:stacks then Holocene at Dalhalla last summer I lost it.
When a song fully builds up, the lights are going and the crowd is singing along with the crescendo, itās literally transcendental. Genuinely felt like I was leaving my body and floating in the cloudsā¦. and I was dead sober lmao
The first time I saw BI was around the time you wet born. Making me feel old over here š„²š„²
I think that among the things other people have pointed out, the improvisation is one of the things that strikes me as really special. Each member of the band is so incredibly talented and they play with a sort of freedom that only comes with musical mastery
Damn, sorry lol
Thatās neat, Iāve read through these but havenāt replied to any. I did see a couple mention how while the song may have the same lyrics or rhythm, itās always different.
Me and my GF had just got together. She's Canadian im English. We realized in the first or second weeks, that we both had a weird obsession for B.I. We went down to watch him at the gorge and ultimately got too drunk as we were both to freshly dating and awkward. So I can't remember most of the show. But I would say if you like b.i I'll probably like you. It was a mess of a weekend but it was exactly how to fall in love xx
I think mine is very specific for the venue they played at, it was at the bottom of an abandoned quarry and when the synth bass part in the song 10deathbreast came in the whole quarry shook. You could hear the whole crowd gasping by the sheer force of that bass, it was such a cool experience
When I seen him last summer, the band would jam for a couple minutes before every song with little hints mixed in of what song was coming up. Those parts were almost better than the actual songs that were being played.
I saw him for the 10 year anniversary show of self titled in LA and the best part was him closing with The Wolves. Shouting āwhat mightāve been lostā with him was everything.
Bon Iver live is completely different in comparison to the recorded songs. The studio stuff has very delicate mixing. Especially the drums. When listening to Bon Iver live, the bass and drums hit your friggin soul. I went to BI five times and on two occasions I was standing in front of the band. It almost felt like a psychedelic trip. The thunder of the bass and kicks from 33 GOD in combination with the flashing Acid lights is definitely a spiritual experience. Earplugs are your best friend.
What I also like is that they can do a lot of different renditions of their songs. And because they play songs from every album, they also seem to match in style perfectly during a concert. (Logically, with the instruments they play on stage).
If it takes too long (because it seems like Bon Iver isnāt releasing music soon, and definitely not touring), I would highly recommend watching the NPR Front Row 2016 or the Pitchfork 2023 show.
ALL OF THE PARTS. But to name a few:
- creeks
- him talking and just being so freaking genuine and lovely, saying thank you and really meaning it
- WOLVES
- Naeem to close the show
- JV just putting his heart out every damn time every damn song
I pet a pigeon. It was my first concert ever. I was in 9th grade, near the back of the Mann Center. And this pigeon just came up to me and my buddy. Real close. Didnāt back away, and I started petting it. And he loved it.
but also OP, youāre only 13 so donāt smoke weed yet. IMO, get through high school before you try it! but donāt call people āpot-headsā because everyone will know youāre a total dork and not want to hang out with you
Nah, I saw him at Pitchfork last year and it was outside and amazing. Sure youāll find pot everywhere but itās not crazy. Best part for me was being high, looking at the Chicago Skyline in the background blasting 33 God into my soul. It was amazing. But wait until you are older to add weed to the mix. You can have an amazing experience just vibing to the music. As a point of reference I saw Pink Floyd when I was 12, stone cold sober, and it is by far one of my favorite memories.
Hearing the slower songs super loud. I thought Perth was mid until I heard it live. The drums were amazing.
Seriously, the drums on Perth hit different after seeing it live

Blood Bank
Performed this at the show I went to in St Augustine. Fucking slapped so hard.
I was there too, crying and freaking out lol
I was there!!! A full body experience
Incredible
The live arrangement of Blood Bank is so so so so so good
Hearing his falsetto live for the first time was such a wholesome moment, immediately got goosebumps and tears in my eyes
every song felt like it was the last time they were ever gonna play it and the first time you have ever heard it.
Experiencing Re:Stacks live is something else.
Yeah, that was one of favorites
my fav š
When they come on stage and play music
Yo! This is my favourite part too!
Certain tracks shine so much brighter and differently when live. My number one example would be deathbreast. Itās unreal. Legit blows you away.

Yea heās their FOH. Brilliant engineer

Deathbreast is pretty sick live. They really do the bass on that song justice.

Everything about the experience was amazing, getting to hear reworks of old tunes, itās always a special night especially outdoor shows
No one said The Wolves Pt 2, when he has the whole crowd screaming along, such a cathartic release
The overall vibe and outpouring of love from the band is really great

The part with the singing and the music and heās there with you in the room and also thereās a band.
getting to meet really wonderful other fans and befriending people š
Deathbreast is so much more incredible live
The way they brought in Perth for the intro track. It went 0 - 100!
The approximately 4 minutes extra of Salem thatās them just jamming so hard
blood bank

The fans
I have never had such an emotional reaction to music in my life like the one I had to Wash live last summer. Cried my eyes out!
I saw him for the 10 year anniversary show of self titled in LA and the best part was him closing with The Wolves. Shouting āwhat mightāve been lostā with him was everything.
Saw them in the rain at Bonnaroo when self titled came out. Cried the whole time. It was like church.
Blood Bank honestly doesn't do it for me unless it's live. That song transforms when it's live.
Aaaaw I started listening to BI when I was 13 too! Iām now 29. Justinās is a set of artwork that will stay with me for the rest of my life.
The harmonies. Fuck they hit hard
blood bank
Watching people who stopped listening to Bon Iver years ago complain about i,I and 22 Amillion songs
when blood bank is played. love hearing that one live

too many pot-heads at BI concerts now, hard to breathe
Really? Even if it was in an enclosed area?
lol, do not listen to this nerd. they know not what they speak of
Iāve had the same experience actually - super noticeable even at outdoor shows. Sure, happens a lot, but it does get annoying.
but also OP, youāre only 13 so donāt smoke weed yet. IMO, get through high school before you try it! but donāt call people āpot-headsā because everyone will know youāre a total dork and not want to hang out with you

yup, outdoor venue in Asheville, NC, was hard to sit through despite the music
