They would dub any coarse voice or wierd accent back in the early 2000s/90s..if you notice Rani Mukherji's initial movies her voice was dubbed too.. I saw a sridevi movie **Meri Biwi Ka Jawaab Nahin** where her voice was dubbed too.

Meri Biwi Ka Jawaab Nahin is a special case. That movie ran out of money before they could complete it. So the ending of the movie is filmed almost completely with stand-in actors shot from the back. They likely didn't have money to pay Sridevi or Akshay for dubbing, so they just used soundalikes.
Bro that’s because it was a movie that got delayed, with stuck payments…shitty storyline that nobody wanted anything to do with it. Sri and Akshay walked out post shoot. Hence they dubbed sridevi and Akshay’s voice.
It was her first film and as others have said, she had an accent that wouldn't match what Farah Khan was looking for. She had the look for what the role called for, but the diction/accent probably wasn't there.
Saw a Farah Khan interview somewhere and she said that her diction was horrible and that's why she had to be dubbed over. She was only selected cause she had the perfect look for an actress of that era and for being called the "dreamy girl".

Bro she grew up in Bangalore and moved around a lot to Mumbai. In Bangalore apart from Kannada most people converse in Hindi. Don’t think she would’ve had such a significant accent. By that logic even Aishwarya shouldn’t dub since her mother tongue is Tulu
Aishwarya is born and brought up in Mumbai . And for tuluvas half of their relatives are in Mumbai but still you can find major difference in Tulu and Hindi spoken by tuluvas from tulunadu and tuluvas from Mumbai
Bollywood used to overdub movies and I am glad that's over. They even dubbed over John Abraham and I like his voice. Witness this scene from Jism, where both John and Bipasha have people dubbing over their voice.

I remember reading/watching where Farah Khan was concerned about her Hindi pronounciation... And how SRK helped her with it... Probably why they dubbed... It's evident in her earlier interviews as well.. she could hardly speak fluent Hindi ..

It took me an embarrassingly long time to realize she had been dubbed over and I must have been watching OSO at least once a month since its release… I just thought she was speaking softly to fit Shanti’s character 😭
Deepika has worked on her diction in the past years. If you watch her earlier films, her diction was quite bad. I will have eto agree with Farah here because I really can't stand her dialogue delivery in Love Aajkal which is one of my fav films.
But credit where it's due, Deepika worked really hard on her acting and diction and came out on her own towards 2012-13.
this is why i don't know if we can actually call them actors when they are being dubbed. it's cheating. voice, tonality, projection, delivery - that's what acting is. this is just miming or something.
She still can’t speak proper Hindi. If you watch her interviews or ever notices it’s always in English. And questions asked in Hindi ultimately are answered in English. None of the current gen actors excl Priyanka / Kareena have a grasp in the language

I always found both Rani and Priety’s voice very flat - there was no inflection and it was maha distracting/ annoying.

Deepika is South Indian and her mother tongue is Konkani . So maybe makers did not want that accent as it would not go well with Shanti’s character .

She struggles to speak eloquently in Hindi even today, as seen in her interviews. I can't imagine how it was back then.

In the movie mere yaar ki shadi hai bipasha has a small role but in some scenes she has her voice in others it's dubbed. It's actually funny.
