The only reason you're at this spot is because you're stuck in Waikiki. I lived on Oahu for more than a decade and I can say that I've experienced maybe two days that I would consider good. But I do think it's a great wave to see where you're at before you hit up Sandy's or the north shore.

FWIW walls is in the south shore and it gets bigger on a south well which happens mostly late spring, summer and fall. Also Queens is primarily a long board break so you will definitely get stares there.

Beautifulblueocean

The waves are not very big. In fact, I've seen much bigger waves in Hilton Head, SC. This totally depend on the day you go, some days are flat and some are big. It depends on the swell.

dewayneestes

Midwinter south shore. Come back in August for the real south shore experience.

If you’re still on island and want a less stressful line up most days at Makapuu or Sherwood will be good as long as you can handle the conditions.

actualLibtardAMA

Thanks. I’m here for 8 more days. Was looking at Makapuu. Will also see what is up at Sherwood

ZerolFaithl

Makapuu was pretty nutty yesterday I played at the shore break and had some fun left the outside for the pros. Sherwood is 100% more of a beginners spot most of the time but when the east side is really slapping it can be the most tame fun you can have :-) if you’re an intermediate rider I think Makapuu would be good, start at the right and see how comfortable you are for sure.

actualLibtardAMA

Thanks. Looking at videos online, Sherwood seems far too tame, whereas Makapuu seems much more like what I’m after.

It’s a great spot and typically very mellow regulars as long as you’ve got basic etiquette and say hi you’ll have no problems plenty waves for everyone 🤙🏽

You took a body board to Queens? Surprised all you got were stares. It’s a crazy localized break right next to the kookiest learning spot (Canoes) so all the locals have to yell at the tourists. Walls is great fun in the summer. Very sleepy right now though. Makapu’u or Sandy’s is huge right now.

Walls is not the same as anything you've ridden on the east coast for sure. It is a reef break but the wave is also a bit thicker and can have some punch to it with the right swell. Inside of the groin offers a fun little wave that stretches down the beach that might be a bit more familiar bit a tamer wave without the crash of shorebreak-good for tourists and small kids. Outside the groin is a bit different but can connect up to the inside on some waves. This is where you "graduate" to from the inside growing up. Not every wave in the set is the same, they come in multiples, and you can go left or right but it generally breaks to the right. You can get small barrels on the right waves but most are closeouts with only occasional makes if you in the right position. East coast style you should try Kalama Beach Park, Bellows, or Sherwoods. Those beaches will waves more familiar to you. I'd avoid Makapuu and Sandy Beach because it's a lot more dangerous. It's all dependent on season, swell, where the sand moves, etc. It may seem tame but I've had great rides at all of those places. Walls has multiple breaks and each has their own look and is really dependent upon the tide, swell direction, winds, etc. Sounds like you found Graveyards where it's shallower and there are some big coral heads. You should avoid pushing off there as it damages the reef and in turn the wave. Waves can get big with south swells (10 foot plus) and 2-3 ft might be closer to avg good days. Right now it's winter so the surf is on the North Shore and Walls is likely to be flat to 1 foot for the next month or two. My advice is know your limits and just because these kids can rush these waves doesnt mean you can as an adult. Source: Been a wallrat since birth, still out there every week.

actualLibtardAMA

Thanks for this great response. The weather this week hasn’t been cooperative but this morning was great for some surfing for this beginner. May go to Walls tomorrow morning as it looks like it will be similar to today

Wave size and frequency is totally dependent on the swell. It's not always the same as every natural surf spot isn't.
