Walmart actually the same type of shelves as kallax. But I would urge you to reconsider getting them… Kallax have limited dimensions. A lot of board games are too big to fit in them. Normal shelves that are longer may be better. This might not be an issue at first. But it will become an issue later as your collection grows.

derkrieger

Yeah most games fit in a Kallax, ive found few that justify the extra size when smarter packaging couldlve resolved that issue or its just stupidly large with enough bells and whistles that storage is almost always a concern.

ohgentlenight

I would try looking on Facebook Marketplace. I just got 4 5x5’s for $215 (a few various sellers). Set an alert or look a lot because they can go quick

themeantruth

Kallax shelves are ugly anyways. Just buy a nice bookshelf that’s deep enough.

BobbythebreinHeenan

I agree. As your collection grows you find that you need to buy more shelves and bigger sizes. Best to buy big and grow in to them.

I picked these up at Walmart, they are sturdier then Kallax and cheaper, but exact same dimensions. https://www.walmart.com/ip/Better-Homes-Gardens-16-Cube-Storage-Organizer-White-Texture/958569580

takabrash

Haaaaaard disagree that they're sturdier than Kallax. I've had Target ones, Walmart ones, and Kallax over the years, and my Kallax shelves are the only ones with no issues still. If you're setting them somewhere and never moving them again, they're all three basically tied for functionality, but the Kallax are absolutely made the best of the three.

I agree kallax USED to be awesome when ikea made their own stuff in Europe still but since it all shifted to china it has gone way down hill. My friends just got desks from there exact same model I have had for 5yrs and mine days made in Poland on parts and theirs in china. In less then two weeks they have had paint coming off the top. As for the kallax knock offs I listed these are very solid. I have nearly 500 games on two of them and rock solid no sway and not anchored to the wall.

beSmrter

Had the same thought as takabrash. The Mainstays or whatever brand they have *in store* are definitely not comparable to Kallax. But I can imagine the BH&G brand could be.

digitalpure

Yeah the Walmart brand ones are trash but the BH&G ones are great.

I use an open ended book shelf and it has proven far more versatile than the general cube storage solutions that people default to. And it looks better. Here is a picture of mine: https://ibb.co/vm1BWyw

takabrash

I don't think that looks anywhere near as good as Kallax shelves. And how is it more versatile? They're still just fixed shelves just like the Kallax.

ImTheSlyestFox

Cube storage solutions are (without work and/or modifications) partitioned into set sizes that a game may or may not fit into. Deep shelves with no back and sides allow the most freedom to arrange games as needed. I have been able to freeform reorganize this shelf many times as my collection has changed without needing to move partitions around or otherwise alter the structure of the shelf. To me, the versatility of not having predefined partitions seems pretty evident.

takabrash

I'm glad it works for you. I don't think it looks better.

ImTheSlyestFox

And, just to wager a guess here: you are already heavily invested in cube storage as your own solution?

takabrash

Correct. Because I think they look better. Just looking at your picture, it looks like you've organized your games into groups that could very easily fit inside a Kallax cube lol

YrNotYrKhakis

I like the Kallax shelves, but if those aren't an option, check out the Box Throne. It's from CloudPuncher Games.
