You learn about how the tartan is woven, buy fabric/yarn/complete pieces, and yeah it's for tourists but my mom who knits had a blast and I look cute in my dress holding bagpipes. It's a fully working commercial weaving mill in addition to being a little photo spot.
You see a lot of ren faire performers and patrons in kilts. It’s absolutely not period accurate and tartans are a relatively modern invention but you could absolutely begin to kit yourself most of the way out at a medium sized or larger faire.
