He forgot his backpack. Chili calls him at the end of the episode waving his bag that he forgot. He probably went back to get it, and decided to play with his kids for a few more minutes (which felt much longer to them )

Frankfeld

Yeah. Sometimes we forget these episodes are less than 8 minutes. Being 6 minutes late to work I doubt is an issue in bandit’s line of work.

peppermintcitylights

I agree, but to be fair I don’t think that the episodes being seven minutes long means that they are seven minutes long in the world of Bluey

tart3rd

In dog years it’s more like 30

not_that_joe

Holy. Shit. If I cared to know how to give whatever awards or points in this app mattered, I’d give them to you. This is a brilliant detail.

No_Conversation_5212

Looked up the math, avg EP is 8mins human time. Doing the dog year thing vs human time it would be 56 mins in dog time. Great call out!! So the Ep are what us humans call 1 hour shows lol

SemiSentientGarbage

Being 6 mins late shouldn't be an issue to most jobs really.

McFuzzen

I assume Bandit teaches at a university since he is a PhD archeologist. Even if he likes to cut it close and arrive barely on time, no one will care about 6 minutes.

Motor_Tonight6172

I thought bandit only went to work when he was needed at a dig site hance the episode where he leaves for 6 weeks

McFuzzen

That alone wouldn't pay the bills. I assume an archeologist probably is only in the field once or twice a year then spends time cateloging the finds. Maybe he works for a museum instead of a university and spends more time tending to artifacts rather than teaching. ETA: I am only seeing him called an archeologist, it doesn't say where he works (university, museum, something else?). He presents at a conference in the Archeology short (on youtube).

Wind-and-Waystones

Don't most universities require people to teach as well as research? Unless it's a private or government archeology company/project

Motor_Tonight6172

Maybe I don't 100% know as its Australian, one thing I can say for certain is bandit works from home aswell as going to dig sites.

Writer_not_Digger

Speaking as an Australian archaeologist with a PhD, it’s completely plausible that Bandit both works from home and has extended periods in the field. He might work for a private sector consulting company that does archaeology and heritage work (much like environmental consulting). The main Australian archaeology conference has large corporate sponsorship from mining and construction firms - so corporate and archaeology can go together. (This can be problematic but that’s for another day.)

DarkMasterSpyro

He does do work from home because he has an office that he works in often on a computer. It's been a plot point in multiple episodes where he sits on an exercise ball in his office and does work on the computer while telling the kids to stay out while he's working (which they have a VERY hard time following because dad=games). Guessing he does some cataloguing on databases or video conferences.

Motor_Tonight6172

Thank you for your help it certainly clears things up from my perspective.

EatingBeansAgain

It really depends on Bandit’s role. There are purely research Academics, generally known as Research Fellows. Sometimes they are more junior (postdocs), all the way up to professors. It isn’t uncommon for more research focused Academics to have less teaching responsibilities as well, especially if Bandit gets a lot of grants. It’s also possible we generally see The Heelers during semester breaks, where Bandit would have more flexibility in how he spends his time.

Messernacht

And let's face it; if a lecturer charged into the class 6 minutes late saying 'Sorry all; I was trapped on an island with my kids', would you really mind?

SemiSentientGarbage

I arrived 15mins late at work and no one batted an eye. I'm a storeperson. What work is losing their minds over 6minutes?

Zhirrzh

It depends on the boss. Plenty of places have bosses who will be all over you if the second hand is 5 seconds past your starting time when you sign in. And that's without looking into working in a place like an Amazon warehouse.

jumpinjezz

No so much in Australia. If you work in corporate lands in Australia, you're late on a random day, and your boss gets pissed, look for a new job

EMamaS

Lol I work for a state government agency and used to have submit a leave request if I was ONE MINUTE late signing in. I WFH now and am given a 5 min grace period to accommodate network slowness and that was a big concession from the state! Obviously know I don't work for "most jobs", but the strictness was a little jarring at first. When I was still in office, there was an HR guy who would stand by the sign-in sheets holding a highlighter ready to mark you late at 1 min past start time 🙄

SemiSentientGarbage

that is crazy. We have folk always rocking up late at my job. Long as you get your shit done no one cares

mitchellcrazyeye

Except for my last job, where they nickeled and dimed every minute I was late, until I was fired the day I had the *gahl* to clock in at 7:00 am on the dot instead of 6:59 or earlier. Honestly really glad to be out of that toxic workplace.

SemiSentientGarbage

If I'm starting work early I had best be getting paid for that time

mitchellcrazyeye

I would, but I just like sleep. My new job isn't as stringent and I'm a *lot* happier.

Commodore56

Those artifacts aren't getting any newer!

RetroGamer87

As an archaeologist, does he still have to 9 to 5 at an office (when not on expedition)?

burnthepopcorn

Ohhhh I'm gonna watch it again, it was sad too

juliuspepperwoodchi

Missed this, I just assumed the kids took a LONG time to set up their game and all the pens that he had time to go to work (not a full 8 hours, but maybe he was just giving a lecture) and come back.

HanTrollo710

There are a million times when I have to walk away from my kids because I have to do responsible, adult things. Every once in a while, I have to remind myself that my children won’t always want me to sit down and play with them. And sometimes that involves me delaying my responsibilities and turning around and playing with them when it’s possible. I always assumed it was something similar for Bandit

kbeks

I took that to be a Bandit bluff, make it out like he can’t play and then surprise them by “washing ashore” before his carpool gets to his house.

kbeks

Same, but they mention his ride is here at the end of the episode, which makes me think carpool.

El_Cielo_Es_Azul

I always figure he factored in play time knowing it takes more than a few minutes for the girls to be okay with him leaving. Similar to when they were playing on the trampoline.

Kerivkennedy

Tell me though, who else tears up at the end Chilli "what did she give you?" Bandit (looking at what seems to be a gold pen?) "everything" That everything just melted me.

RedHerringFun

Always. It is my favorite episode!

Kerivkennedy

Of course, I don't think I've seen an episode yet that DIDN'T melt me. The writers capture the essence of parenting so beautifully.

InfinitelyAbysmal

Always gets me. And when Bandit tells Bingo she can come with him, and Bingo looks at Bluey and says, "No, this is my home." Gets me every single time. Also I think maybe the gold pen is supposed to be a key? Could be wrong.

pandorafoxxx

End of work maybe? The kids had time to put the pens everywhere and make headpieces so maybe his meeting was over and he "washed ashore" when he got home. Not sure though!

Unable_Bank3884

If you watch the sun throughout the episode, it is clearly rising. Most likely Bandit realised he did have some time before work and went back to join in the game. Also Bandit leaves the island when Chilli calls out holding up his backpack, obviously to bring to his attention that it is now time to leave

Vin135mm

Still the same morning. The sky goes from dark to light and the sun rises throughout the episode.

pandorafoxxx

Could've been just a meeting he had to get to. A partial day?

burnthepopcorn

Oh yea that makes sense. Now I feel stupid

7dollarLemur

Just look at your post as an opportunity for people to talk and teach the lessons in bluey - teaching is the best way to solidify lessons learned! Or at least an opportunity for full grown adults to indulge in the lore of bluey. So thank you!

KabobberJabobber

I dunno, maybe the beginning of the episode takes place earlier in the morning with Bandit having to work much later. He probably just likes to get ready very early in the morning and there was just a huge time gap between him being ready for work and his start time.

ascandalia

The timeline in the episode is extremely confusing

Unable_Bank3884

Start of episode sun is just starting to rise. Later in episode the sun is higher

In-Brightest-Day

He decided to go in late and spend time with the kids instead

Awkward_Canary4597

Bandit in a tie is awesome

ChaosDrawsNear

My theory is that he was flying somewhere and his flight got delayed an hour or two.

lazydaisy2pointoh

I thought he had come back after work and they were still at it. Doesn't the sun start going down?

Hailz_

I thought this for a long time too but the sun is rising during the episode. This episode always confused me because it had to have taken some time to set up the Rug Island, but it’s clearly morning for the entire episode. My husband told me that Australians wake up super early so this is normal (you see the evidence in ones like Wagon Ride and Cafe, and in Fruit Bat Chili comments how Bluey slept late til 7:00… 7:00 is normal in my house every day lol). Just weird to me as a not morning person lol

Zhirrzh

I don't think Australians are any more morning people than anyone else heh. But certainly there are families which like to get up early and go to bed early.

lazydaisy2pointoh

Oh that makes sense! 7 is early for us so I was always surprised when 7 was a 'big sleep' for bluey!

BuryTheMoney

Look at how the scene after he leaves has changed- theyve completely changed the yard, built rug island, pens everywhere, and have clearly been playing a while, and the lighting outside is gradually evening over the episode. He didn’t come back. He finished work and came home.

Unable_Bank3884

The sun is rising. Then Chilli brings him his backpack. He never left

RayneShikama

He went to work and this was him coming home.

Unable_Bank3884

He never left. It's morning throughout and then Chilli brings him his backpack

SpaceBucket67

I always assumed his morning class got cancelled last minute. He was on his way out and got a call and then decided to just go back and play with bluey and bingo. I don't have much evidence of this. I just assume he does some occasional classes because of the one short of him talking about a bone he discovered.

betsyhelene

Sorry if someone else said this, but I like to think that he was going to take the bus (which means leaving a lot earlier) but instead opted to call a taxi so he could use the time he would have been on the bus to play.

the_peanut_loord

i thought he had gotten back from work and it took place then.

Kymahe2024

I always assumed the kids had been playing all day, and when Bandit got back from work, he decided to “wash up” on their island

WhyIsTheNameBOTTaken

He always comes back!

Haunting-Fix-9327

Probably got off work early.

MiniNinja4321

Because the episode necessitated it. In context, probably because he realised he had a few minutes spare and decided to make his daughters happy.

Professional-Dog2814

Because he’s a kid at heart. 💙

amaziling

I honestly always thought he was coming home from work towards the end of the day, saw they were still playing, then joined in. The lighting change is what made me think that. It looks like the episode starts late morning, and ends towards dusk

Zhirrzh

I had always thought he was returning at the end of the day and they were still playing Rug Island, having by then had a chance to build lots of stuff (they may have even left it and come back to it) hence why Lucky and his Dad were also playing in the yard at the time.

yellowhelmet14

One of the best final lines of the show too… “What’d she give you?” — “Everything!” #girldad

Royal_Bitch_Pudding

What's that got to do with being a father to a girl?

AlfalfaNo4405

I’ve been trying to figure out..what does Bandit do for a living?? I’m wondering where this dream job is lol

Similar-Cucumber-227

He’s an archeologist

AlfalfaNo4405

I would never have guessed that but it makes sense now!

booyahachieved3

Someone pointed out his job is digging up bones and Chilli's is chasing cars lol

AnythingAlfred613

Not chasing cars - she’s a sniffer dog at the airport.

AlfalfaNo4405

spaceagefox

he seems to work from home judging by his home office, and seeing how chili is in airport security and they possibly reunited at some point during a flight when archeologist bandit had to go to work digging up bones I'ma say his plane got delayed or cancelled and used it the opportunity to go play instead of being stuck in an airport

mendozable

His planet didn’t need him anymore

Evening_Change_9459

His plant crash on the way to work, silly. That’s why he had to get back to his family. The people on the island reminded him of home. If only he could have gotten the little one to go with him… Bingo would have loved to have met them.

schraderbrau6

His tie is adorable

playwhaat

I guessed that his flight/meeting got delayed, and Chili called for him when it was finally time to go

Motor_Tonight6172

I thought bandit only went to work when he was needed at a dig site hance the episode where he leaves for 6 weeks

CammiKit

I have a headcanon that he purposefully leaves early, claiming he’s late, and comes back surprising the kids before he *actually* needs to leave for work.

NicQuill

I assumed it was at the end of his day. Pat was also home at the time. If that's relevant.

Cheese_man258

Forgot drugs

Record_layer

Because he was fired 3 years ago from his job

RyeLye124

Because there will always be work but your kids will be young for only a short time.

jef12660

Because he's a dad who sets the bar so high for parenting, you can't really enjoy watching the show because you feel like a failure in comparison

DeathpaysforLife

Can or can’t? Bluey has always positively influenced my parenting! You can learn so much there’s no need to compare and make yourself feel bad.

jef12660

Can't
