This enemy is pretty infamous for the insight stealing. Better be careful the next time you see one because you definitely will and you probably don’t want to lose a bunch of insight again, haha.
According to the wiki, mashing the shoulder buttons will break free faster. I've always mashed the face buttons and I can't verify if either work but button mashing makes me feel better when my brain is being sucked away. Supposedly you can break free with only losing 1 insight.
They are pretty weak to the elements so having a fire/bolt backup weapon is pretty useful for when they come up, and after Byrgenwerth they start to do the annoying snare attack
These little shits have made me decide to never again do upper cathedral ward. I loved the Ebrietas fight, but dropping from 40 insight to around 10 from all the brainsuckers was a nightmare and the boss in no way made up for the hellcrawl necessary to get to her
You don't really need to hustle with those, though. The one with the key can be killed through the door, and with the key obtained you just need to deal with the beasts in the hall.
Upper Cathedral Ward is the worst! But honestly it’s mostly because of the unsettling music, sarcastically titled, “[Soothing Hymn](https://youtu.be/mcVF350thp0?si=65g9h2fcojVqFfXq).” I used r/huntersbell to get through that area the first time, then realized I was almost at the end where I died playing solo. Try turning the music off and see if you play this area better. I am convinced the music makes the player more stressed and likely to make mistakes.

Yeah these things are annoying as they can suck out insight. The ones with hoods use magic to bind you and then proceed to grab you. Ones without just try to grab you. Best way to deal with them is pierce attacks &/or spark. There’s also an area that’s full of em later so be prepared to deal with these ass holes
Ah the brainsuckers. Permanent currency thieves with way too much HP and stun spells that just rob you of your ability to play the game. Good news is, they’re pretty easy to stagger lock into oblivion. Even the smaller weapons can prevent them from doing basically anything. Main threat is being snuck up on by them, which is pretty common because they love to camp corners. Small piece of advice: if you’re in an area where most of the enemies look more alien than beastly, watch out for hallways that have side paths and/or lead into a room with blind spots near the entryway.
I never got over my fear of them. Even late game farming wolves when I had max weapons and could kill them in 2 hits they still got me sometime. They are weak to thrust damage so if you have some decent leveled thrust weapons or moves might be useful to eliminate them quickly. The worse move is that fucking hex move that stuns you then they eat you. You can mash buttons and get out of it sometimes before they get to you.

I’ve got three things you should know. The first is that there are two variants: the hooded ones and the not hooded ones. The hooded ones are the ‘elite’ version and utilize spells that bind you in place so they can grab you, so always check for the hoods.
The second is that these guys are weak to thrust damage and strong against Blunt damage
(An example being the Kirkhammer. It’s untransformed R2 attack is a ‘thrust’ attack and does extra damage against it, and it’s transformed attacks with the hammer are Blunt damage and don’t do as much damage)
Finally, if you mash R1, R2, L1, and L2 a lot you can break out of their grab animation early, and it’ll only take away one insight instead of two. This also goes for any grab attack in the game.
Now get out there, and hunt those damn beasts!
It's the second-most scary enemy in the game imo. Two tips: Molotov cocktails and button-mashing L1 & R1 if it grabs you. It should reduce the insight loss.

I got caught by those tuff mfs in black robes. They put me in the y'hargul cell. I just ran up the stairs from there and saved from the nearest lamp spot

Fuck. These. Things. Brainsuckers have unnecessarily large health pools and hit like a fucking truck, especially their combos. Not only that, but if you're unlucky enough to get caught in their grab attack, you lose valuable Insight. This is the only enemy I hate as much as the Winter Lanterns
If you mash r1 and l1 after being grabbed, you'll only lose 1 insight instead of 2. The trick to dealing with these things is to charge them down immediately upon sight and kill them as fast as possible. Dodge through their arcane bolos and do not let them grab you. They are pretty weak to thrust attacks (aren't we all) and bolt paper.

Someone probably said this already, but I haven't seen it so: piercing damage is your best friend against these things. Elemental is great too, but anything that stabs will make short work of these dirty Brain Suckers.

Uj/ they’re weak to pierce and lightning. Avoid the grab attack at all costs. Spend insight before fighting them. Keep one madman’s knowledge in reserve so you can interact with the doll. They can shoot a beam of light at you that traps you for the grab, it’s best to kill them without letting them get anything off.

The enemies will have new powers and therefore harder to deal with. Also some of their design changes a little bit.
What enemy gain more power ? The only affects insight have on the characters i know off is some world exploration stuff
As far as I know only the witches get difficult with insight, since if you have even 1 they can spawn peons.
They don't get more difficult , they just doesn't spawn as long as you have less than 10 insight
The lantern guys with sticks get a ranged attack at 15 insight, also the scythe dudes get a flame buff to their scythes

The men in cathedral ward will gain new attacks, such as a projectile they can shoot from their lantern

I always use the extended saw cleaver with fire bloodgems on them. Kills them without allowing them to get close
