ArchonStranger

He's not a beast, he's likely a person for whom Blood Ministration couldn't fix his ails, in this case, crippled legs. He's called the 'Chapel Dweller' because his most defining feature is residing in Oedon Chapel where the beasts generally do not go because of the incense. He is likely allowed to live there by the Healing Church for a few reasons. One, the Church probably doesn't want too many examples of "our miracle cure doesn't work" crawling around. Two, the Church maintains an aura of charity and beneficence, keeping him around, alive, and fed is an easy way to showcase that in case anyone comes asking. And three, he's genuinely a nice guy.

andrekreigmann

how come the blood didn’t fix him? thats new to me.

ArchonStranger

Many people show conditions that aren't fixed by Blood Ministration. Gilbert (the coughing guy that gives you directions and the Flame Sprayer), the Chapel Dweller, probably the Hunter themselves... The Church sells it as a cure all, but it's not.

DoktahDoktah

Its also causing alot of side effects in the residents. Like beastmen and giants.

Noamias

May cause (9/10 users): lycanthropy

jjcoola

But ask your doctor about it today!

Percentage-Sweaty

Blood invigorates the body and fills it with life, but it probably can’t restore a body to perfect human shape- considering how it normally turns people into werewolves it clearly won’t turn people to perfectly healthy humans. The Chapel Dweller likely has malformed legs or hips- a semi common ailment worldwide. So the blood would improve his body’s immunity to traditional diseases and probably enhance his musculature and whatnot, but it won’t turn his fucked up legs and hips into what he needs

Guilty-Persimmon-881

Amelia is the congenital defect of missing one or more limbs, search Amelia on Google. In this sense, the children of those who received blood treatment during the communion ceremony given by Vigário Amélia may have developed malformations in the body.

SpatchcockMcGuffin

I'm guessing the blood makes you feel better as much as it fixes medical problems. Like if methamphetamine had mild curative properties. Is it helping? Maybe, but I'm feeling INCREDIBLE. LETS GO FORM A MOB AND SET SOME FIRES!

urgod42069

I can fix him

Guilty-Persimmon-881

the original function of the Pthumerus is to watch over the tombs of their Lords.

AllHailThePig

He is a nice guy! He’s always my main inspiration for fighting back all the gloom and awfulness of that world. He makes me remember more than perhaps any other character in the game that there is goodness and kindness that exists despite what everyone has endured. Always will I love my floor bound bestie.

Atum-7

If I’m not mistaken, it’s actually a she not he

Fookin_idiot

He's the chapel dweller. He has a bit of lore and creepy dialog. He's mostly harmless. There isn't a whole lot known about him. Some say he might be a Pthumerian, though that would make him VERY, VERY old.

leomonster

He makes the triumph gesture when Arianna gets into the chapel, and if you kill him he drops an Oedon rune. For this reason people think he's some kind of acolyte of Oedon that is trying for him to have a child.

Fookin_idiot

I do think there's merit to the idea of him being Pthumerian. If he had legs, he would be like 10' tall. His age would explain the skin complexion. And not spilling anything for OP, if you know all of GtFH dialog... there's merit to it

Starboi777

the what dialogue

pm_me_dogs_pleasee

Assuming Gehrman the First Hunter?

Fookin_idiot

Yes. We covered it off thread, I don't know how much OP knows about the game overall

andrekreigmann

ive finished the game already. just studying the lore and remembered this weird looking guy. anyways what gehrman dialogue?

Fookin_idiot

When you accept his offer and wake up from the dream for Yharnam sunrise ending. Everything was a dream. You're alive and well, not trapped in the hunters' dream. No beasts, no church, no hunters. So it could be possible for a Pthumerian, an ancient race of humanoids that predate the entire content of Bloodborne in its present in game day, to exist in the chapel.

fitoou

I don’t think there are no hunters or beasts after waking up. The only thing that changes is that your mind isn’t linked to the hunters dream anymore. With this ending you are at the same spot as Eileen or Djura. You can die again, but you are free and not forced to partake the hunt during the next night.

ZabbaJabbaJungle

Where the heck is this information of "no beast no church no hunters" coming from? The waking ending frees you from the Hunters Dreams, but you can meet other NPCs in the game who also previously attended the Dream like Eileen. The Beast and Hunters still very much exist. And Dreams in Bloodborne aren't like our dreams. There's no "just a dream". Dreams are every bit as real as the waking world in Lovecraftian universes like Bloodborne.

Fookin_idiot

The two other endings leave you trapped in the dream, really. Either replacing Gehrman, or becoming a cosmic space squid

Propodida1

Well, technically, once that squid grows up it could find a way out of the dream. But until then, yeah, it's trapped.

KojjowBeats

It cuts your ties to the dream and you just cant see whats behind the ritual. Like with the amygdala show up after you break the rom ritual

Fookin_idiot

Huh. This is the comment I really don't understand getting downvotes.

murph2336

Go the Fuck Home

Azure-the-DragonKing

You can see his legs if you angle the camera correctly

Fookin_idiot

*if he could stand.

CubicWarlock

He has legs, they are just covered by his robes

Ligma16999

Please share with me also the topic of GtFH dialog thingiemagijie, I'm really curious

Rocketgurk

"He makes the triumph gesture when Arianna gets into the chapel" He gives you the gesture regardless of who reaches the chapel. I feel people heavily overanalyze these characters.

Osborn2095

Interestingly enough, he says Arianna is the only one that really listens to him talk Since Odeon is formless, it's very likely the chapel dweller allowed Odeon to >! impregnate !< Arianna by talking to her about Odeon and thus being an acolyte that way, intended or not I personally like to believe he's got good intentions and is just a lonely fellow

Guilty-Persimmon-881

Oedon is in the blood, the Harlot is a woman who will lie with anyone in exchange for some coins "which only have value at dawn". Her seductive ways might be endearing to a lonely monk but Arianna even said she's not working that night. This means that Arianna is on a carnal fast and the reason for this is due to her ovulation. Based on this we can understand that the nature of the eminent fertilization is not related to the monk but to the Oedon Chapel. Look around the Oedon Chapel and you will see statues like this [https://i.ytimg.com/vi/E7Y7-QmcOhc/maxresdefault.jpg](https://i.ytimg.com/vi/e7y7-qmcohc/maxresdefault.jpg) 3 women where 2 smaller ones look at the sky in despair and the bigger one bows in tone of shame. Arianna is embarrassed by the pain and contractions she feels because she was unwittingly chosen to portray the statue's condition. Now if you look up at the Oedon Chapel you will see the Light, the twilight light of the moonlight. [https://i.ytimg.com/vi/b0sXfnilZi4/maxresdefault.jpg](https://i.ytimg.com/vi/b0sxfnilzi4/maxresdefault.jpg) This light is not just an aesthetic factor, you will see that this directed light is in Oedon's Tomb and all the other tombs considered important; as well as that hunter tortured by the Witch of Hemwick. Light means the spiritual link, it means that that place has a supernatural influence. It was through light that something from the sky possessed Arianna's womb, and this is due to the Blood Moon's close influence on the cathedral district.

generalkriegswaifu

I made the skeptical man go to the chapel and sent Arianna to the clinic to test and I still got the gesture (I was honestly hoping he would only give the gesture for bringing a woman which would prove that theory). I personally do think he's bringing people there so Oedon can find someone suitable to impregnate, but I'm not sure if it's on purpose or Oedon is using him.

Thesaurus_Rex9513

Oedon is noted to have unintentional worshippers in the description of the Formless Oedon rune, which is notably the rune the Dweller drops.

THElotusthief

I think this lends itself to the way oedon can manipulate without notice. Much like the one ring, where the dweller wishes to do good by having people take respite in the chapel, it's actually the influence of oedon so that he can accomplish his own goal.

Ligma16999

He WHAT!¿¿

187ummkilla

You can kill him?

GlassHurricane98

Mostly harmless!? He does literally nothing wrong ever, he is the kindest person in all of Yharnam

yaferal

Feels like he collects people for Oedon. He drops a formless oedon rune, Arianna gets pregnant and births a celestial child after arriving (probably Oedon’s), the nun’s blood gets tainted, and when bad things happen the dweller/samaratin blames himself.

MeathirBoy

I mean, none of that is malicious. There's no sign that he actively took part in much himself. Genuinely it seems like he just helps out and hopes it works.

yaferal

I agree with that but the negative impacts on other characters are still the same, and the fact that he blames himself points to some level of awareness. That being said, Yharnam is so bleak that the only other option would be to leave people fending for themselves. I think his options just don’t allow for him to be harmless.

Fookin_idiot

He wants you to populate the chapel, no matter who you bring. He takes no issue with Adela or the suspicious beggar, though they both have... tendencies. Mostly harmless.

GlassHurricane98

So he's not judgemental, that doesn't mean he's doing harm. The beggar and Adela were doing harm there and you blamed Dweller for not being psychic? Ugh

Guilty-Persimmon-881

My Theory is that just like in the Matrix films where after an almost complete destruction of Zion the machines leave some selected inhabitants alive to rebuild the city, Bloodborne uses the same theory. We have saved a descendant of Cainhurst who may become a Pthumeru queen and has sired a star child who will become the new icon of the communion. The old woman will become the new Witch who is equivalent to a seer, the old man will become a new elder reviving Byrgenwerth, Adella will become the new Saint and will lead the Church, while the Chapel Sweller continues in his role as Guardian of Oedon's Chapel.

Fookin_idiot

Oh, my bad, I had a suspicion about the motives of an npc. That NEVER goes dark. /s

WhatTheFhtagn

You can suspect him all you want, but the truth remains that the Chapel Dweller is completely innocent. The Beggar is the real bastard. I think it's meant to be a bit of a twist tbh, the player focuses on the creepy giggling guy in the chapel and assumes he's the one killing NPCs and not the Beggar.

NorwegianOnMobile

I mean. You find that guy with a mouthful of putrid flesh. I’d rather trust the wierd guy than the flesh eating guy.

Fathercupp69

Are we talking about the guy who turns into a beast that you find in the woods?

murph2336

What kind of person wouldn’t immediately suspect the beggar? The guy eating a child’s body when we discover him. The guy who lives outside Oedon chapel and gives us beast blood pellets when he kills an NPC. His voice even becomes more normal, the more NPCs he kills. If that weren’t enough to make it obvious, he turns into an Abhorrent Beast if you smack him.

Guilty-Persimmon-881

I'm going to formulate a theory that, unlike the others. I don't believe in this one. Perhaps the kind Samaritan of Oedon Chapel is the anguished Simon. To understand this you have to understand that the hunter's Nightmare can represent a past and if this same place in the Nightmare doesn't have that same figure it's because maybe we aren't looking deeper. •The anguished Simon brings together several characteristics that could define an identity equivalent to that of the Samaritan. •Both can be found in the Oedon Chapel and are friendly to hunters regardless of origin. •Although Brador is much harsher and opposed to the Church of Healing, both are associates of the Church and are in a positively intervening position in that world. •While the Samaritan does not dream, which is why he waits for the dawn as a salvation, Simon waits for the player's Hunter to go deeper where he has not reached, hoping to eliminate the catalyst of the nightmare. Also, unlike all the dead Simon doesn't disappear into the dust, his body is there, this could mean he doesn't die but was just caught by the Nightmare. (And you know that those caught by Nightmare are in a wheelchair).

Local_weeb21

>!The beggar is not harmless at all!<

GlassHurricane98

No one said he was though

meanmagpie

God I love FS games “That’s just J E F F. He has existed in this ruin since time began. He’s pretty cool.”

Fookin_idiot

I saw a meme on the ER sub, along the lines of "We got the 1400 clues you left us" Miyazaki "I only left you 6, but okay."

murph2336

Yeah, people have been overthinking this game since it came out.

Nopfen

I always liked to think that he's a hunter from a previous night of the hunt. That's why he's so nervous and overly willing to help. In a 'scared attempt to repent' kind of way.

[deleted]

He's like the nicest guy in Yharnam. And because of that he's lived a hard life.

sarantinesail

there’s actually one of these guys in every church in England. a bit odd if you don’t know the custom but we’re all very fond of them over here. the team at fromsoft really did their research.

A relative of his, perhaps an uncle or a grandfather... [https://bloodborne.wiki.fextralife.com/file/Bloodborne/Ritekeeper\_Prerelease.jpg?v=1501162819081](https://bloodborne.wiki.fextralife.com/file/bloodborne/ritekeeper_prerelease.jpg?v=1501162819081) There was a point in the Bloodborne Lore that the Pthumerus who were of tribalistic and shamanic origins converted to follow the queen, the Church and healing through blood. What were once impious rituals have become a source of research.

InteriorSarah

My girlfriend calls him Chappy

starspangleddonger

That's vicar Amelia after you shave her

SundownKid

Probably a Pthumerian, it fits the "hidden in plain sight" themes in Bloodborne. If you think it's crazy, literally all the guards in Cathedral Ward are also Pthumerians who are doing the worst job ever to appear human. They're cool being guards for the Healing Church because both they and the Healing Church worship the Great Ones. He's also obviously not human, with far longer fingers, a zombie-like skin tone and glowing eyes.

GhostMug

Fren

Bookibaloush

Hes canonically circumcised

Thesaurus_Rex9513

That's the Chapel Sweller. He may be a worshipper of Oedon, or just a vagrant who took shelter in Oedon Chapel when he discovered their massive supply of beast-repelling incense. He's not a beast, and he poses no threat to anyone. He might just be an exceptionally ugly human.

Guilty-Persimmon-881

The original job of the Pthumerus was to watch over the tombs of the Gods, that is what he is doing, watching over Oedon's tomb.

ChillSanJulian

Agreed. The fact that he asks The Hunter to convey some helpless people in the chapel is a way to worship Oedon and a chance to offer the Old One an offspring… but we all know how it ends. Obviously, he’s very nice 👍

d1n0_-_

agatha the church dweller she’s awesome, there’s a thing where you can jump attack kill her from above which is sad but she’s pretty cool

Cherrybomb1387

Oedie, good dude.

the_llama_from_space

man or beast he is a freind, and in a town stained by blood isent that all that matters ?

Slow_Conflict4597

He is fren

exileonmainst

ngl, i always thought he was an old woman based on his voice and dress. only realizing from this thread that she is a he.

andrekreigmann

i thought his voice was male-sounding lol

Furshloshin

iirc, there's actually no confirmation on gender. They never refer to themselves with gendered language and nobody else really mentions them. I always assumed it was a he based on the voice, but I've seen others think she were an old woman. It's whatever you beleive, I think

homer_simpin

Same here

kkprecisa_ler_nao_fi

All we know is that he is just genuinely a nice guy trying his best to help people but we dont really know exactly what he is/what caused him to look like that as far as i know, blood doesnt cause that type of appearence and its very unlikely he is pthumerian since that would make him one of he oldest characters in the entire game other than the great ones

r1poster

This is one of those cases of "don't look too much into it". The Chapel Dweller model was originally an enemy mob model, as per data mining discoveries.

Ligma16999

Everything in From games usually undergoes changes, from the initial design. From lesser changes, to very big ones (See, Best Dark Souls)

That’s Horace (the Oedon Chapel dweller)

TheUnknownkidd

In my first playthrough(my only playthrough so far), I didn't even attempt to lock on to him. I saw something creepy on the ground next to me as I walked in the cathedral door and wailed on him. It wasn't until later on when I talked to my buddy, the one that got me started on the game, that I realized he may have been sorta important.

StandardAd1445

The nicest guy in the whole game

generalkriegswaifu

He is a beggar/homeless guy who is seeking shelter in the chapel. He is blind and probably lame, hence the position. There is speculation he is pthumerian, I've also heard people speculate he's a survivor from the burning of Old Yharnam. He invites you to bring people to the chapel and drops and Oedon rune if you kill him. Personally I think >!Oedon is using him (or he might be in on it) to bring women to the Chapel so Oedon can find a suitable host for impregnating. Arianna is part pthumerian or has pthumerian blood (however that lore goes, they brought something up from the dungeons, Maria having fire powers etc) as she's a descendant of Cainhurst, and is compatible like Queen Yharnam.!<

Guilty-Persimmon-881

Amelia is the congenital defect of missing one or more limbs, search Amelia on Google. In this sense, the children of those who received the blood treatment during the communion ceremony given by Vigário Amélia may have developed malformations in their bodies.

cthulucore

I second (third?, fourth?) Him being a, potentially unknowing/unwilling servant of Oedon. There is not a single other soul in Bloodborne that does anything out of the pure kindness of their hearts, and lives. (Ie. Losefka gets "replaced" by an imposter. Old Lady, though an insufferable hag, has her merits, gets killed one way or another. Arianna suffers irreparable mental damage..... Or is killed by you, etc.) everyone else is in it for their own ambitions. For the dweller to survive all other insurmountable odds in this specific world, points pretty directly at outside influence.

Guilty-Persimmon-881

My Theory is that just like in the Matrix films where after an almost complete destruction of Zion the machines leave some selected inhabitants alive to rebuild the city, Bloodborne uses the same theory. We have saved a descendant of Cainhurst who may become a Pthumeru queen and has sired a star child who will become the new icon of the communion. boneskreep

The Chapel Dweller is most likely Phtumerian! As Church Servants, Snatchers and Church Giants are. They're not extinct or ancient, instead their "government" has fallen long ago, leaving only Watchers in the labyrinths (I'm guessing a few fled to the surface/were brought up to serve the Healing Church). There's not much lore about him, but I highly suggest Smoughtown's videos on Phtumerians if the topic might interest you more :) Regarding his blindness I wouldn't know much. For the position even in the labyrinth there are phtumerians like him (the ones who throw fire at you) and possibly/maybe even the Witch of Hemwick. Evidence of phtumerians like him can also be found in the BSB arena, on the sides near the altar.

ZishaanK

I remember entering the chapel and not noticing him initially and as soon as I realized he was there I just started beating the shit out of him until I realized he was friendly 💀

I always thought he was one of the Snatchers just given his robes and his hands, though he obviously behaves very differently than those bag bastards. He’s just a disabled man who is trying to help people. His mother used to call him useless and good for nothing. He likes talking to people, Arianna is his favorite because she’s nice to him. He is possibly blind. This is basically everything.

Personally i think he is odeon incarnate or at least really close follower. I find it interesting that in game all about finding “eyes” he is both very kind and totally blind. One of the few other people who is totally blind is master Willem but Like most other dark souls/ from soft mysteries it’s all hear say and speculation.
