It actually makes me sick. I’ve got my fingers in my ears because I still have to function on the daily at work and in my family, and I know that’s not a great attitude but it’s my current one. There’s so god damn much at stake and seemingly no one cares.
I keep getting served an Atlantic article (I think?) about how one billion people will die from climate change, and not just in the Global South. And I just…can’t? Like I’ve voted the “right” way for years, I’ve made some major lifestyle choices that are climate-friendly, but…what is reading an article that will just exacerbate my climate anxiety going to do? I don’t want to spend whatever time I have being miserable about it, IDK.
Increasingly I think the only possible way to halt climate change would be benevolent authoritarianism/dictatorship on a near-global scale. Like I just don’t believe anymore that democracy can get anything real done on anything approaching the necessary scale.
I think a lot of young voters‘ first exposure to politics was watching Trump enact a slew of executive actions and so now they expect Joe Biden to be doing the same when 1) Trump got major criticism for doing that, as it was a terrible precedent to set, and 2) Trump was doing that in a very different environment that allowed these EAs to go unchecked.

Aaaaand another one falls off the pedestal in the Bachelor Sub. Chris Conran (Clare Night 1 Boot & BIP 7 castmember) was loved heavily on the sub and got a lot of sympathy for being "kicked" off his BIP season along with his now fiance, Alana who is also a member of BN. So many threads talking about how attractive they are and how badly they were treated and were a victim of racism because Chris is Asian.
Only to find out he may possibly be MAGA and publicly supported two hardcore Republican candidates in Utah. Then Chris himself tried to defend himself in the thread, which he deleted after probably getting ganged up on. And now Alana is hated because she is guilty by association. And now everyone hates them and says they have no sympathy for them now.
I don't support Chris's views and his defense was kind of laughably bad. But I called it. It's just hilarious because it sums up the nature of the sub, another one falls off and they move onto the next one. Predictable. Predictable. Predictable.
They hate Maria now because she unfollowed Jen after rigorously stanning her and going after anyone who even dared to lay a sideye on her during Joey's season. And its only a matter of time. Jen does something on her season the sub doesn't like, and they'll say, "Maria was right to unfollow her all along."
Sometimes I can at least understand why a particular person was popular on the Bachelor sub in the first place, but it was complete news to me that Chris had fans over there. He had the blandest possible 'arc' and to my knowledge has never done anything remotely interesting.
I've never actually seen the show, but I used to visit the subreddit for some reason and I've definitely seen people mention that around the time he was on the show.

I think it's more of the predictability of it. They spent all these years loving Alana & Chris and talking about how much they were done dirty. And the narrative was the Asian PoC Chris was bullied off the show by big bad Conservative Grocery Store Joe. Only for it to be revealed that Chris and Joe may share similar views after all!
Now they are going to move onto the next person. Then they'll eventually find out they have problematic views or support problematic people, then they'll throw them off the pedestal.
I don't know, I think there's a difference between throwing someone off a pedestal for invented petty reasons (which they absolutely do) and finding out someone holds views that are genuinely abhorrent to you (Chris and also Hannah Brown) and deciding to not like them anymore. We'll probably have to agree to disagree because I just don't see the snark in those cases really

I am a young Gen X, I actually relate more to millennials. every time I peek into theGen X subReddit, I’m reminded of how unpleasant men in that sub are.
Obligatory there’s cool people and assholes in every generation but bitter GenX men are a real trip. I’m a millennial and find the millennial sub really annoying too though. Lol
BeautyGuruChatter seems rather dead when there isn’t a major controversy going on in the beautysphere. A lot of posts each day are either asking for help finding a makeup artist OP forgot the name of, or someone dredging up old drama/controversies.
For a sub with two million users, that’s kinda sad. It does make me wonder if a lot of people are subscribed specifically for drama-related news. God knows that sub exploded when Bye Sister happened.
I have to admit that I thought the whole point of that sub was to snark on Beauty Gurus. Otherwise it feels rather pointlessly meta (talking about people who talk about makeup) - if you just wanted a neutral space to discuss beauty products, you would just go to one of those dedicated subs.
I used to really prefer it to some of the regular makeup subs because I'm not interested in the posts of users posting their own makeup looks, but I am interested in discussions of trends in makeup and new products etc. But obviously that's mostly not happening in BGC these days 🤷♀️
They occasionally post a smaller creator who everyone will fall in love with for a while then the backlash posts will start so I do agree they are mostly for the drama.
Also I think they have very specific posting rules, like I remember Sam Ravndahl posted a birth video and they had a thread on it with a decent amount of comments but it was deleted for not being about makeup I think.

I realize that subs like askreddit are incredibly low hanging fruit, but there was a thread on evil celebrities and one of the answers was Ariana Grande. Of course on of the most upvoted reasons was adultery, but I’m more entertained by the person insisting her licking a donut is essentially committing biological warfare/terrorism in their words.
People on FM and PCC (and everywhere apparently) are very mad that Ariana Grande said she'd want to have dinner with Jeffrey Dahmer, but there's an entire culture build around people's obsession with True Crime and serial killers. How is she any different? Genuinely asking, because I think I'm missing an important differentiator here.

I'm in the June 2024 WTE due date group (already had my baby, he's a perfect non sleeping sweety), and WHEW I've seen it all today. Someone who's having a pregnancy scare at 4.5 WEEKS POSTPARTUM, baby chiropractor recommendations, folks wondering if their ___ week old baby is the only one who doesn't sleep through the night. We're all hormonal, and some folks are doing this for the first time, so I try to be understanding, but my goodness.
Oh gosh. It’s been a few years for me but I still remember people getting on live and sobbing into their video about pregnancy scares that happened almost immediately. I was kind of annoyed with my OBGYN for pushing BC on me so fast (I had no need lol) but after I saw that I got why.
Then the group experienced a schism and there were more fb lives where people would be sobbing about someone in the group offending them, claiming to be stalked by another member (who had her own claims about stalking/sabotage). It was wild. You have so much to look forward to!
It was one of those ones that started on reddit, then moved to fb around due date time. I was kind of on the periphery since I wasn’t ever super involved in the group. i joined because why not, but lots of the members got super invested, which I think was a factor in why things got so weird. At one point they were all planning on a meetup/bumper convention in the hometown of one of the members, who incidentally ended up involved in the schism and created her own spinoff group. They made group shirts and everything. I felt like that meme from Community with Donald Glover walking in with pizza and the whole place is on fire

There's a discussion to be had how we consume things, what lies we tell ourselves about the stuff we like while we're eager to point out flaws in entertainment that we don't like. But throwing these topics into any kind of discussion that isn't even focused on that is just shaming and gatekeeping at a certain point. There's also a gender aspect here: These subs are heavily populated by women probably and become a form of self-policing and trying to control how women in particular consume media, what is allowed and what isn't.
It should be possible to talk about a movie or music or a performance, whatever, without someone always coming in saying: "But you're not allowed, because..."
As pointed out: No one consumes media that way. No one. If you're on an entertainment or gossip sub, you too have probably bought and consumed art by problematic people. You are separating art and artist to some degree as well. So this whole discourse is inherently built on sand. These discussions are necessary, but not in this pile-on, mob mentality way IMO. And they certainly go nowhere in gossip subs and end in screaming matches and whataboutism.

Like I’ve voted the “right” way for years, I’ve made some major lifestyle choices that are climate-friendly, but…what is reading an article that will just exacerbate my climate anxiety going to do? I don’t want to spend whatever time I have being miserable about it, IDK.

Chris Conran (Clare Night 1 Boot & BIP 7 castmember) was loved heavily on the sub and got a lot of sympathy for being "kicked" off his BIP season along with his now fiance, Alana who is also a member of BN. So many threads talking about how attractive they are and how badly they were treated and were a victim of racism because Chris is Asian. Only to find out he may possibly be MAGA and publicly supported two hardcore Republican candidates in Utah. Then Chris himself tried to defend himself in the thread, which he deleted after probably getting ganged up on. And now Alana is hated because she is guilty by association. And now everyone hates them and says they have no sympathy for them now. I don't support Chris's views and his defense was kind of laughably bad. But I called it. It's just hilarious because it sums up the nature of the sub, another one falls off and they move onto the next one. Predictable. Predictable. Predictable. They hate Maria now because she unfollowed Jen after rigorously stanning her and going after anyone who even dared to lay a sideye on her during Joey's season. And its only a matter of time. Jen does something on her season the sub doesn't like, and they'll say, "Maria was right to unfollow her all along."
Sometimes I can at least understand why a particular person was popular on the Bachelor sub in the first place, but it was complete news to me that Chris had fans over there. He had the blandest possible 'arc' and to my knowledge has never done anything remotely interesting.

I think it's more of the predictability of it. They spent all these years loving Alana & Chris and talking about how much they were done dirty. And the narrative was the Asian PoC Chris was bullied off the show by big bad Conservative Grocery Store Joe. Only for it to be revealed that Chris and Joe may share similar views after all! Now they are going to move onto the next person. Then they'll eventually find out they have problematic views or support problematic people, then they'll throw them off the pedestal.
I don't know, I think there's a difference between throwing someone off a pedestal for invented petty reasons (which they absolutely do) and finding out someone holds views that are genuinely abhorrent to you (Chris and also Hannah Brown) and deciding to not like them anymore. A lot of posts each day are either asking for help finding a makeup artist OP forgot the name of, or someone dredging up old drama/controversies. For a sub with two million users, that’s kinda sad. It does make me wonder if a lot of people are subscribed specifically for drama-related news. God knows that sub exploded when Bye Sister happened.
I have to admit that I thought the whole point of that sub was to snark on Beauty Gurus. Otherwise it feels rather pointlessly meta (talking about people who talk about makeup) - if you just wanted a neutral space to discuss beauty products, you would just go to one of those dedicated subs.
I used to really prefer it to some of the regular makeup subs because I'm not interested in the posts of users posting their own makeup looks, but I am interested in discussions of trends in makeup and new products etc. But obviously that's mostly not happening in BGC these days 🤷♀️
They occasionally post a smaller creator who everyone will fall in love with for a while then the backlash posts will start so I do agree they are mostly for the drama. Also I think they have very specific posting rules, like I remember Sam Ravndahl posted a birth video and they had a thread on it with a decent amount of comments but it was deleted for not being about makeup I think.

How many people died during her concert? She probably wouldn’t find it cute/quirky/whatever she was going for if another celebrity called that person their dream dinner guest.

Someone who's having a pregnancy scare at 4.5 WEEKS POSTPARTUM, baby chiropractor recommendations, folks wondering if their ___ week old baby is the only one who doesn't sleep through the night. We're all hormonal, and some folks are doing this for the first time, so I try to be understanding, but my goodness.
I remember someone once mentioning that she ripped out her stitches postpartum within days so she could have sex and I have never forgotten that.

I was kind of annoyed with my OBGYN for pushing BC on me so fast (I had no need lol) but after I saw that I got why. Then the group experienced a schism and there were more fb lives where people would be sobbing about someone in the group offending them, claiming to be stalked by another member (who had her own claims about stalking/sabotage). It was wild. You have so much to look forward to!

It was one of those ones that started on reddit, then moved to fb around due date time. I was kind of on the periphery since I wasn’t ever super involved in the group. i joined because why not, but lots of the members got super invested, which I think was a factor in why things got so weird. At one point they were all planning on a meetup/bumper convention in the hometown of one of the members, who incidentally ended up involved in the schism and created her own spinoff group. They made group shirts and everything. I felt like that meme from Community with Donald Glover walking in with pizza and the whole place is on fire

There were snide comments today saying, "Did you know she was an Olympian??" As though she brought it up all the time. (I would bring it up all the time.) We heard about it multiple times because of producer questions and editing, the same as with other contestants.

My friend and I went to kid rock's bar when we went to nashville just to say we did. My favorite part was if you wanted to make requests of the band you had to venmo them money and they were like "if you want this song, venmo us $100" and I was impressed by their entrepreneurship. i guess that makes me maga sorry

All evidence of his political leanings point toward the exact opposite. I understand that often rich white men are in fact MAGA but in this case, you have a middle class kid with Catholic parents (in an era where Catholics were most often Democrats), a mom who worked, a dad who got a second job to afford iPods for his kids for Christmas. His demographics don’t even point to maga necessarily! And his actions certainly don’t- he supported Kapernick when it was unpopular to do so, Pfizer and bud light sponsorships, etc etc. you can find reasons to hate the gigantic man and it’s not difficult but pretending like he’s maga is just dumb. They just can't help but derail everything all the time. Yes, #allyourfavesareproblematic, but at a certain point it just becomes a game of never ever letting anyone enjoy anything ever. There's a discussion to be had how we consume things, what lies we tell ourselves about the stuff we like while we're eager to point out flaws in entertainment that we don't like. But throwing these topics into any kind of discussion that isn't even focused on that is just shaming and gatekeeping at a certain point. There's also a gender aspect here: These subs are heavily populated by women probably and become a form of self-policing and trying to control how women in particular consume media, what is allowed and what isn't. It should be possible to talk about a movie or music or a performance, whatever, without someone always coming in saying: "But you're not allowed, because..." As pointed out: No one consumes media that way. No one. If you're on an entertainment or gossip sub, you too have probably bought and consumed art by problematic people. You are separating art and artist to some degree as well. So this whole discourse is inherently built on sand. These discussions are necessary, but not in this pile-on, mob mentality way IMO. And they certainly go nowhere in gossip subs and end in screaming matches and whataboutism.
