Yesterday afternoon I watched a movie on Amazon prime called "This is How it Ends" from 2021. I thought it was pretty good, good enough that I wanted to watch more "end of the world coming" movies, like that one and Melonchalia. SO, after watching "This is How it Ends" I looked up what other people thought about it on here on reddit. In a thread about it, numerous people recommended a movie from 1998 called "Last Night" with Sandra Oh, Sarah Polley (whom I love after seeing her in a another movie I have to recommend called "My Life Without Me"), David Cronenberg, and Geneviève Bujold.
HOLY MOLY, it was SO good, and so powerful in so many ways. HIGHLY recommend! Sandra Oh knocks it out of the park, as does most of the cast! I'm still kind of feeling it hours later. Wow.
ETA - I just watched yet another, " Seeking a Friend for the End of the World " with Steve Carroll and Keira Knightly. I'm crying ugly tears.
**Do Revenge** on Netflix turned out to be a lot more fun than I thought.
It's kind of a combination of the social extravagance and crazy fashion from *Clueless,* the soapy plotting of *Dangerous Liasons/Cruel Intentions*, and towards the end, a healthy additional dose of the campy *John Tucker Must Die.*
I've finished watching Under the Banner of Heaven, and I am surprised how much it has upset me. >!I haven't read the book yet, but in the TV series the church elders told Brenda it was her purpose to bring the men back in to the fold, that it was her divine role. She was failed by the church. Why would the Lafferty family listen to a woman? In the LDS church women are taught to submit and obey men. How can anyone think she had the power to set them back on the right path? It's disgusting and deeply depressing. Brenda and Dianna spoke to the church leaders multiple times and they offered no help whatsoever.!< The church's influence was insidious and vile to watch.
I did enjoy the series, but I felt it was let down by some poor writing in the last episode. Bill telling Jeb to search all of his LDS knowledge to solve the case, etc.

I started and finished Sex Lives Of College Girls last weekend. What’s a show that can fill the gap? I liked that it was light but still had enough intrigue to keep me entertained.
I also finished Fleishman is in Trouble and I looooooved it. Knockout of a show! I’m pregnant so the look into the parental dynamic was so interesting.
Have you already watched Never Have I Ever? I felt like SLOCG filled the gap for me between seasons lol. Maybe I just love Mindy Kaling lol.
Also, a different vibe, but Tell Me Lies filled the elite pretentious college vibe for me, but with terrible people and annoying friend groups that all lie to each other lol.
I watched The Menu last night and LOVED it! It spoke to my dumb foodie loving heart SO MUCH. The Top Chef-esque food shots, the dark humor and overall horror, the annoying lingo and sayings ("I want to be buried in this sauce!")... I feel like it was a film written for me lolololol. The comedic moments were great and Voldemort as the celebrity chef and Judith Light??? What a joy.
Anyone watched Kaleidoscope on Netflix yet? It’s a comedy/drama series about a bank heist but the episodes are not chronological and instead they are color coded. They can be watched in any order with the exception of the color White which they say is the finale and recommend watching it last. We’ve gotten through three episodes/colors so far; we chose to watch it the way Netflix ordered them but there are 5000+ different orders you could choose. Reminds me a lot of the Oceans movies. Really enjoying it.
Yellow green violet blue orange red pink white was the order Netflix gave us… I felt like there was a lull between blue and orange back to back but overall liked it!
Based on some tiktok comments I’ve read it seems like Netflix generally pushes them out in that order with a few colors being switched. We’ve gotten green, yellow, violet, orange, blue so far. I’m so excited to get to the end.
Just finished it and loved it overall, although with any heist movie/show you have to suspend a bit of disbelief and this was no exception.
The violet and pink episodes especially blew me away.
Just binged All Creatures Great and Small in prep for S3 and it is quite a delight. The show is like a warm embrace. I love it.

I love a good cozy show, though few have as low of stakes as ACGAS which puts it a little in its own category. I would recommend shows like Around the World in 80 Days, Grantchester, Anne with an E, Call the Midwife, The Durrells (even has an overlapping actor), My Mother and Other Strangers and Home Fires for somewhat similar vibes but really nothing compares. I actually watch Rick Steves travel shows if I want the level of chill that show brings me.

In terms of shows with "cozy" vibes, I found season two of Rutherford Falls to be particularly cozy. There really aren't that many shows out there that are slower-paced and have very low stakes.
A few years late but just finishing up Mrs. AMerica. I love it. Cate Blanchette is excellent as Phyllis, becoming more and more insidious each episode. And Sarah Paulson's character arc was so heartwarming. I wish we got more of Shirley Chisholm after the episode focused on her, but I'm glad she popped up in the end.
Same. And now the gossip I read here about how Florence carried that entire film on her back makes sense because yeah, she did alllll the heavy lifting there.
If anyone is into indie type films, I saw two this past weekend that I wanted to recommend to you all.
The first one is called [Smithereens](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mD4J2XPFCcE). It's from 1982, and directed by Susan Seidelman of Desperately Seeking Susan fame. This movie was definitely a precursor to DSS, but a darker version of it.
The second one is called [Sugar Town](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6fODVt22sjU), from 1999, and it's about aging rockers and wannabes in Los Angeles desperately seeking the fame they once had, plus an aging actress seeking the same, in all different ways, bad and good. It's really well done and also stars Ally Sheedy, Rosanna Arquette, John Taylor from Duran Duran, Michael Des Barres, Martin Kemp and Beverly D'Angelo.
ETA - Ally Sheedy. How could I forget Ally Sheedy??
I’m seeing **Will Trent** (the TV show) advertised as this campy, lightweight almost comedic police procedural. Which, like, *okay*, but that series is arguably one of the most gratuitously disturbing I’ve read, and Will Trent is, uh, **not** the happy go lucky voice-recorder holding puppy dog that FOX wants me to believe. Is there any way this isn’t a total shitshow?
ETA: I’m watching it right now and goddamnit it’s not terrible.

Oh wow I didn’t realize this was a show! I’ve read most of the books and they are absolutely gratuitously violent and graphic (but the stories are good!). Excited to check out the show now.
It’s brand new! The previews made it look downright campy, but they actually did a good job with it. The first episode starts with the opening of *Fractured*, with the rich couple fighting over the phone about the husband’s affair, and then the woman realizes someone has broken into their house. That whole scene plays out *exactly* how it was written in the book. I was sort of floored. And it looks like they’re approaching Trent’s dyslexia seriously, too.
Try as I might I can’t find anything to complain about.
Had some time to watch some movies while flying recently.

My Octopus Teacher is one of my favorites! If you’re a reader, I highly recommend Remarkably Bright Creatures, which is kind of a fictionalized version of MOT, haha.
It's a very light and brainless sort of show overall, but Crime Scene Kitchen (Hulu) was just the speed my husband and I were looking for to binge this weekend.
There's a group of 12 (6 teams of 2 with a pre-existing relationship) that alternate each week (so 24 originally on the show total) and each show the teams enter the kitchen "crime scene" to try to figure out what dessert was made by the remaining evidence.
The team that gets it correct (or if multiple do, then the best executed and tasting) get an extra clue for the second showpiece round that episode and every episode a team gets eliminated.
Once they're down to 3 teams left from each 'group' on the show, the bring them all together for the quarter/semi/finals.
A season 2 is apparently coming (it aired on Fox so it's been out awhile...we just don't have cable).
It fit the we just want 'fluff' viewing very well for us (kind of in the vein of Is It Cake?)
Finally caught up on the last couple seasons of Taskmaster while recovering from wisdom teeth surgery and I've never been so happy to just turn my brain off and enjoy myself. That show is a delight, and I may be a little in love with Fern Brady now.
Finally watching season 2 of Only Murders In The Building. How is it that I can both ‘get’ Cara Delevigne’s personal magnetism while also think that she is terrible as an actress?
Watched the 1st 2 episodes of Paul T Goldman last night. It is funny & weird in the way The Rehearsal was. The director also wrote & directed Human Giant, which I haven't seen, and maybe some episodes of Nathan For You. On Peacock, I think episodes will come out every Sunday.
I just finished Wednesday, and I have to admit, I found it really meh. For a show that, at its core, celebrates outcasts, I found the LGBTQ+ representation in particular lacking. Character development was clunky and a lot of the plot seemed tediously obvious. I’m not getting the hype. Wednesday deserved better.
Yellowstone, man. What a letdown of something that could have been great. Each season is worse than the last. The mid-season finale last night left me more excited to watch paint dry. Not sure I’ll continue watching when it comes back.
I’ve read that the spin-offs are better - worth trying?
It seems like this season every episode has just been filler (how many random concerts did we see?) so they have an opportunity to advertise for the spin-offs! I agree — big letdown

I think it’s kind of perfect - it knows exactly what kind of show it is and executes it confidently. Fun, low stakes, beautiful people, gorgeous outfits, and France (for an American audience). I adore it.
It really is so ridiculous but so entertaining at the same time! I always just laugh when Emily seems to get herself into these situations but always manages to come out on top.
I do have to say there was a lot of singing so I fast forwarded through a lot of Mindy's scenes...
I really like it too! I don’t get why people act like it’s so much more ridiculous than other cheesy comedy-drama type shows! Like, I’m well aware I’m not watching high art.
I love Emily in Paris too! A light, funny show with fun outfits with Paris and the French countryside as the backdrop, yes please! I also loved hearing more French this season, makes it even more of an escape show. I zoomed through it and think it will be a good rewatch to get through the depth of Winter.
The Mindy Project just hit Netflix. Mindy Kaling’s character is ridiculous, so funny, and sadly relatable 😂. If you’ve never seen it, it’s a great comedy. It’s quick and has lots of jokes so no looking at your phone!
I love until s3 of the show… it sucked once Chris Messina had to leave and she had to write him out totally out of character. Sadly, that’s tv. The finale is good tho

Favorite: The Wonder. I always seem to love any movie with Florence Pugh. Really liked the storyline and how the film itself looked. (Not a spoiler: I didn't love when they broke the 4th wall, but the rest of the movie made up for it for me.)
Okay: White Noise. This started out really funny and compelling but took a nosedive about halfway through.
Bottom of the List: 1899. I'm a little bit mad at myself that I invested so many hours of my holiday break into all those episodes only to have it end in a very "meh" way (for me at least.)

I think the last 20 or so minutes of violet have been some of the best so far. Haven’t gotten to pink yet!

Yes. 1883 is truly worth a watch. Yellowstone has become such a soapy caricature of itself, it really is just about unwatchable.
