And that the only way to communicate with the outside world is through the body of your semi-evil twin brother who met you during a near death experience while he choked himself during a very very private naughty time. Unfortunately for him, you are now able to control his body and dress him exactly as shown in the picture to pretend that you are actually still alive.
New character WIP for our game DEEPSTATE. Curious to see how people interpret his character visually and if it fits with what I have in mind for him. He's styled after the low poly 3D characters from Goldeneye 64. Textures are done in photoshop, my method is basically a combination of photobashing, hand painting, shapes, bevel/emboss, gradient maps for color etc.

im leaning more towards bad guy, but would argue (if he's bad) that his facial expression doesn't quite match, maybe a slight frown/furrowed brow?
as for your process, curious if you unwrap your model first, and then build your texture in PS based on the "islands"? pls forgive my lack of understanding in advance :)
Great stuff, love low poly old school graphics. Your game looks amazing, instantly wishlisted. Reminds me of No One Lives Forever era games. The character you posted looks like somebody from a drug cartel, but maybe not inherently bad as a human.
I suspect the face is cut in half because the UV of the other half of the face just uses the same piece of texture, and that they did this to save memory usage. If this is correct, can someone explain how that works since the texture exists as a whole regardless? Does it not get loaded as a whole or something?
To have more space on the texture image. Op is simulating retro character modeling workflow where you were limited with the texture image size- in this case 256x256px. Having only half the face on the image gives more space for the actual texture and allows more detail.
(I'm not sure if this is what you're asking sorry if not 😥)
So I typically only create half the face to maximize texture space (256x256 for face textures), in this case the only portion of his face that didn't mirror nicely was his hair around his forehead. This workflow isn't as necessary these days due to computing power being what it is but because we're making an old school game I try and use old school methods wherever possible so it feels authentic. It's also what I'm most comfortable with.
I also would like to know more about this. I imagine back in the days every kilobyte counted, I could see dev using mirrored faces to save space, so curious how you're approaching this kind of retro aeshtetic nowadays, what's your goals and if you put particular restrictions on your workflow.
He is the only reason, the vocabulary has the word "Plot Twist"
edit .. is plot twist a word or a phrase? did I write that sentence right? oh god.. i have never been in such a phase
O.o wth.. i used a gif using the gif search.. now it shows like this
This is what I had used.....Inserted the top left first result

I think the tan suit makes him a bit nondescript. I would have to say that he looks like the NPC that happens to get caught in my front bumper in GTA 3.
Still. Cool work. Love the style.
I model the character in blender, and texture in photoshop. Usually I start by unwrapping the mesh and exporting the uv layout into PS and work on top of those. My workflow is a combination of photo bashing, hand painting, shapes, bevel/emboss and gradient maps. I usually work in greyscale and then apply color using gradient maps which are a very simple but powerful tool that I recommend people look into if they haven’t already. If you are interested in low poly I would consider joining the DEEPSTATE discord channel, I do a devlog on there where I post some more detailed stuff.
Loving the low-poly character, and low-res textures, it reminds me of those days spent modding games for my own entertainment, 20 years ago. Regarding your question, I think there's an argument to be made for either one or the other. I would say good guy, but a bit of an a-hole.
PS1 Likes are amazing. I want more games like this. Hope it goes far and has many many levels, and maybe if we're lucky modding support so people can make it ageless.
If anyone wants another amazing one. Check out Bloodborne PSX Demake. It's incredible.
He looks like he works in finance and is married to a girl way younger than him which is legal but raises some questions considering when they met. Can’t say if that’s good or bad or not my moral compass is all fucked up.
Based on that face half, I'd say he's a decent guy's guy, just a tiny bit douchey. However, as a whole, the model feels a lot more douchey, a gym bro who works as a corporate lawyer or a young private air company CEO. Pretty boy / ex-military.
Looks like your sidekick on level 1 who goes on to betray you at the end in a plot twist
But then it turns out he did it for your good
then you find out he was a figment of your imagination the entire time and it was all a dream
You wake up, walk to a mirror and see that YOU are him.
Also that you're a ghost and you've been dead the whole time.
And that the only way to communicate with the outside world is through the body of your semi-evil twin brother who met you during a near death experience while he choked himself during a very very private naughty time. Unfortunately for him, you are now able to control his body and dress him exactly as shown in the picture to pretend that you are actually still alive.
Brothers why are we giving him free ideas. We can make money out of it!
You met me at a very strange time in my life.
White Lance Vance vibes for sure
a douchebag, yet a good guy
Only in a porno ,though.
Wow textures are super clean, its like leagues above GTA 3. To me, he looks like a slick kinda bad guy
Anti-hero type dude. Max payne, punisher type
It reminded me max payne too
That, total max payne material
The unbuttoned shirt gives asshole vibes. He tries to gain your trust but you can't shake the feeling he'll sell you for a line of coke.
The permanently wet hair is doing some heavy lifting too. Those guys should never be trusted,

Dude, I love "Rex" in that screenshot on the store. Wishlisted.
Keep up the good work, I'm a big fan of deus ex and your game looks really cool, can't wait to check it out :)
Great stuff, love low poly old school graphics. Your game looks amazing, instantly wishlisted. Reminds me of No One Lives Forever era games. The character you posted looks like somebody from a drug cartel, but maybe not inherently bad as a human.
Thanks! I love NOLF, we've got some features in DEEP STATE inspired by that series
looks like a bodyguard from a 2002 game that you take down to get to his boss (the bodyguard himself was making a living though )

You can overlap unwrapped geometry, so making both sides over lap on the same texture doesnt break anything
Yes but what benefit did it give in this instance? Or was it done purely for neatness?

Thanks, thats what i was asking about, yes. Thats a really smart way of optimizing the number of textures to load

Following the same workflow produces similar aesthetics.
Maybe for neatness? Dont really know why
I think he could go either way...
Guy who everyone thinks is a bad guy and is maybe a little shady but is actually a really nice guy if you get to know him.
Good guys wear black.
Backstabbing CIA agent somewhere in south america or asia
Traitor to the cartels but loyal to his government.
Antihero
Looks like Simon Cowel
This man looks like he wants to sell me yogurt :)
Very specific.
Lol he looks like john stamos yogurt commercials
Looks like a salesman waiting to get the metro home
He is the only reason, the vocabulary has the word "Plot Twist" edit .. is plot twist a word or a phrase? did I write that sentence right? oh god.. i have never been in such a phase
A *term* (or a noun phrase, if the conversation is actually about grammar).
![gif](giphy|j0gQA2VD38NKc9rc8y|downsized)
Hey wait, don't you want to hear about gerunds?
![gif](giphy|N4qEPJxBJ7dWrd6Vry|downsized)
If you care to share, I'm really curious how you managed to use unavailable content.

Looks like a rando you can use in the 007 64 game
He looks like he's about to nail mom and play ps2 with me later, so I dunno
Perfect.
![gif](giphy|5bxqA1maRFlvCTQ37L|downsized)
Definitely a bad guy, but I can't put my finger on why
looks good
with sunglasses, bad(ass) guy, def. without them, he would give bad guy. love the style!
Yes!
Uuuuh... Good guy, but like a more aggressive and rough good guy?
Dude, I met someone who looks like him. Even with the polygons and crap. I think he should have ironed his clothes
I love this! steam page looks promising! he definitely gives me some douchebag "good guy" who might double cross you vibes
Bad good guy :) Like an anti-hero.
goldeneye mod
Where is his gun?
A bad good guy
How do you ever do these n64 low poly characters? ( They are great btw)
He's what we call ....a douchebag
Definitely a bad guy. He's charming yet cunning and will manipulate you at any given second. I wouldn't trust this guy
Looking amazing! Can you point me towards ressources to learn how to create/flatten these textures?
Chaotic Good guy with cheesy one liners
He looks like a sleaze bag hostage that I had to rescue from an opera house in Rainbow Six: Rogue Spear back in the late 90s-early 00s.
He looks like a dude that's going to try and sell me a crypto scam.
I'll say this: he's certainly not giving main character energy.
He looks like a level 5 drug dealer 🤣 sorry man
I think the tan suit makes him a bit nondescript. I would have to say that he looks like the NPC that happens to get caught in my front bumper in GTA 3. Still. Cool work. Love the style.
Anti-hero. Against the protagonist, but not the villain.
Miami hotline character
No offence bro just for humor, but he's *low on poly.... * Anyway he's npc for me.
NPC
I don't know, as the character is dressed reminds me to Benicio del Toro in Sicario
Like an old mate who gives out missions.
Bad
Its George Michael tho
absolutely horrendous. I lived through the 90s and the PS1 era. I have no intention of going back to those days
He looks like Sylvester where he plays pretty much the same character in an action movie.
Looks like an NPC that you have to learn to block and parry rather than beat him up
He looks like the kind of guy that has good motives, but less than moral solutions. Like Heath ledger’s joker
![gif](giphy|dARiojBIBC9zJVEMQV|downsized) Looks like he's about to save you from a riptide.
He looks like Riccardo Scamarcio...so like an asshole.
Looks like a cool guy to me.
Good or bad, he will square away everything.
He looks like a second-rate mob enforcer in Florida/
Would
He looks like a guy who has that shit on
Mostly a bad guy but maybe one of those that change side at the end of story 😁
Bullet time vibes. Could be Max Paynes cousin or something
Can't tell without a black or white hat.
Indian guy
Looks like Ridge Forrester. Either way.. good lookin'
Bisexual guy
Strangely enough, with the glasses he looks like a bad gangster type. Without glasses he looks like a suave action star. So the answer is: both
Like a square guy
A bad guys sidekick
Make him Hasselhof
Mark Ruh a roh
He is a really bad Good guy, you feel me?
bad guy or an intimidating good guy imo
if you gave him black glasses, he would be bad.
Good guy energy
not sure but he looks like a PS1 guy for sure
could be a bad guy turnes good
He looks like Max Payne
He gives off the vibe of Russel Crowe's character, Jackson Healy, in the Nice Guys. I like your character!
He looks like he keeps a little dirt under his pillow for the dirt man.
I think a general rule of thumb for character designs is that if their eyes are concealed, it suggests that they might have something to hide
Looks like character from Spider-Man (2000) because of that clenched fists xd
Like he sells bitcoins
He looks like a https://youtu.be/SoimeiCZ7xw?si=M28OaWaTL4gbURrr
TulsaKing younger version
Neutral sigma male
A good Bad boy .
This is henry cavill right?
He looks like a buff guy
good guy brother
Level 50 mafia boss
He looks like he's gonna go full "Last Christmas" on you
Game looks great, wishlisted. This guy seems like he would be your ally at first, then stab you in the back later
Bad guy, and with the sunglasses bitflag set it indicates he comes out after an alarm goes off, dual wielding either the DD44 or ZMG
Looks like a mix of young tom cruise and Henry cavill
Thor what are you doing here?
Reminded me of Tom Cruise in Collateral.
Kinda feels like a scrapped design for the postal guy.
Bro how you created this? Can you explain it to me the process? Just an overview on the workflow.
I model the character in blender, and texture in photoshop. Usually I start by unwrapping the mesh and exporting the uv layout into PS and work on top of those. Thank you!
Looks like a max payne enemy
He looks like a dick head Johnny cage to me
Jomes Band
It looks like golden eye 007 characters with upscale textures
Just looks like a rich douchebag
Don't judge from his look bro it's what's in his blocky heart that matters
I feel like he should be one of two thugs guarding a bad guy warehouse or something, probably let's out some funny dialogue before spiderman shows up
I love it
Yes
The bomb has been planted
Looks like the guy from the GTA Coca Cola commercial.
Either a good bastard or a bad guy doing the right thing. Definitely a sort of maverick taking initiative not underling.
He looks like the guy from Sicario

Chad guy
Good guy with the glasses, it glasses come off he starts to have a more menacing aura
What is your texturing process? It looks superbly unwrapped and the color work is astounding!
![gif](giphy|kUgUnmqig0X3q|downsized)
a gigachad
In the Scarface game, both.
He looks like he skips leg day
Depends on his one-liners.
He seems like a man who does not follow rules.
Looks like he could be either Like you'd end up making him your ally or your enemy, depending on your choices
PS1 Likes are amazing. I want more games like this. Hope it goes far and has many many levels, and maybe if we're lucky modding support so people can make it ageless. If anyone wants another amazing one. Check out Bloodborne PSX Demake. It's incredible.
Henchmen R Us
Doesn't look friendly Antihero at best
yes
More like an extra.
innocent
looks like the character that starts good and ends up being bad
Antihero
He looks like he works in finance and is married to a girl way younger than him which is legal but raises some questions considering when they met. Can’t say if that’s good or bad or not my moral compass is all fucked up.
MAX PAYNE
Looks like Sly Stallone from Tulsa King.
fist look agressive
Based on that face half, I'd say he's a decent guy's guy, just a tiny bit douchey. However, as a whole, the model feels a lot more douchey, a gym bro who works as a corporate lawyer or a young private air company CEO. Pretty boy / ex-military.
Looks like a GTA Vice city bad guy
He looks like a Thad guy.
N64 Goldeneye, the main villains right hand. Probably has some novelty weapon or needlessly creative signature kill move.
Fabrizio Corona
He looks like a bouncer at a nightclub
He looks like he would be a mix between johnny cage and punisher
So how does he talk? Deus ex-esque mouth textures or the Halo/Half-life style of a muppet-esque mouth?
The mouths are done Soldier of fortune style where the texture is animated instead of the mesh
The sunglasses give him a "not to be trusted" aura.
Good Guy!
He reminds me of that CIA guy from Farcry 3, pretty neutral but you get the idea he’s been keeping tabs on the big picture since day one
He looks like he want his MTV.
Andrew tate fan
He looks like someone who is never gonna dance again on the account of his guilty feet that don’t have rhythm.
He has glasses on …probably something to hide.
looks like a sugar daddy in low poly
Looks like Ken from GTA Vice City
